The Night Before Christmas<\/strong><\/p>\n

Twas the night before Christmas and all through the Washoe,<\/p>\n

Not a cowboy was stirring, not there near Lake Tahoe.<\/p>\n

The garland was hung ’round the ranch house with care,<\/p>\n

Across all the rafters, and adorning the stairs.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The brothers were nestled all snug in their beds<\/p>\n

With sweet Christmas visions alive in their heads.<\/p>\n

But Ben tossed and turned; he just couldn’t nap,<\/p>\n

So he started downstairs for a tiny nightcap,<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

When out in the kitchen arose such a clatter,<\/p>\n

He raced ‘cross the house to see what was the matter.<\/p>\n

Through the back door someone flew in a flash.<\/p>\n

Ben followed behind and then heard a great crash!<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Hoss hollered, “Dadburnit!” and slipped in the snow,<\/p>\n

As he chased after Adam, who chased after Joe.<\/p>\n

“What is all this nonsense?” Ben called to all three;<\/p>\n

And Hop Sing, awakened, stepped closer to see.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

But none gave an answer. Each laughed without shame,<\/p>\n

Until Ben in his anger called to each by name.<\/p>\n

“Come, Joseph! Come, Adam! Come, Hoss, and explain!<\/p>\n

The root of these antics, the cause of this playing!”<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

“Come on, Pa!” Joe shouted. “It’s Christmas Eve night!”<\/p>\n

He whooped and he laughed and he dashed out of sight,<\/p>\n

With Adam behind him and Hoss closing in,<\/p>\n

Each armed with a snowball; each aiming to win.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

But someone threw widely and hit Ben instead,<\/p>\n

Hop Sing started\u00a0laughing at Ben’s face, glowing red.<\/p>\n

“Now who threw that snowball?” Ben shouted in rage.<\/p>\n

“You’re acting like children! Start acting your age!”<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

When his eyes found his youngest, Joe pointed to Hoss,<\/p>\n

Who pointed to Adam, who shrugged, at a loss.<\/p>\n

“We just got nostalgic,” he started to say.<\/p>\n

“We came down for cookies, and got carried away.”<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

“Cookies?” cried Hop Sing. “Those for tomorrow!”<\/p>\n

The rest came in Chinese, to everyone’s sorrow,<\/p>\n

Until a stray snowball caught him in the nose.<\/p>\n

It silenced his tirade, then everyone froze.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

“I get you for that!” Hop Sing shouted in fury.<\/p>\n

He reached for some snow and he started to scurry.<\/p>\n

Moving\u00a0quick as can be, like some warrior ghost,<\/p>\n

He caught every Cartwright\u2014yes, even his host.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The great Mr. Cartwright, the head of the house,<\/p>\n

Just couldn’t help laughing, despite how he’d groused.<\/p>\n

It soon became legend, that great snowball fight<\/p>\n
