Looking to his father, he sat forward in the blue chair to the right of the fireplace, elbows on knees, fingers interlaced.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cI\u2019m not so sure,\u201d Ben answered. Worriedly, he tapped the pipe in his left hand on the edge of the lamp table. With right ankle crossed over his left knee he sat in the leather chair opposite from Adam.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cPa, he\u2019s done listened and obeyed everythin\u2019 Adam or Rudy told him. Ya know he\u2019s a natural.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Looking to his middle son, Hoss\u2019 legs mirrored his father\u2019s as he leaned back on the settee, left arm stretched across the back.\u00a0\u00a0 Ben allowed himself a distraction as he thought about the furniture on which they sat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The settee and the leather chair had been purchased at the same time. Marie commenting on several occasions how she could envision all three sons sitting on the settee. She\u2019d told Ben of her dream, Adam\u2019s and Hoss\u2019 long legs stretched out on the low table, while Joe tried his best to imitate his brothers, practically laying on the settee he could only manage to stretch his feet barely to the edge. All the while, Ben maintained that furniture was not for feet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Marie had set to giggles, fizzling her husband\u2019s bluster the first time he absentmindedly set a booted foot to where he forbade his sons&#8217;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The flames within the massive fireplace danced across the logs resting in the grate; illuminating the family members who had yet to retire for the night.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Earlier in the evening Ben\u2019s sons had readily bantered while playing several games of checkers, talking of the events to come the following day at the horse corrals; the crux of the current discussion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cI know he has. It\u2019s one thing for him to ride a horse that\u2019s already been broke.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cBut Pa, Rudy\u2019s been workin\u2019 with him on them green broke ones, and they\u2019s still a long way from bein\u2019 saddle broke. Ya always said once he was sixteen; he\u2019s that an\u2019 more. He\u2019ll be seventeen in a little over five months.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cYou seem to forget I also indicated that his body had to be mature enough to handle the strain.\u201d Ben pointed the mouthpiece of his pipe towards his middle son.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cSo, is that the reason you\u2019re going to use to tell him no?\u201d Adam cocked his head while attempting to hide the mirth from his voice. \u201cPa, if you were going to say no, you shouldn\u2019t have allowed him to work with us for the past month. It\u2019s all he\u2019s talked about for the last week; you saw him at supper and before he went to bed. He\u2019s as eager as they come.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cHe\u2019s too eager. He\u2019s going to make a mistake and could\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cPa,\u201d Adam interrupted, \u201cHoss and I\u2019ll be close by. I\u2019ll personally select the horses that I feel would give him the best chance for success and still give him a ride. You know I won\u2019t put him on a rank horse.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cIt\u2019s too dangerous.\u201d Ben\u2019s head slowly shook back and forth, an indication of his own internal battle \u2013 did he help fulfill his son\u2019s dream or did he do his damnedest to protect his son from possible harm?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cSo, we\u2019re back to where we were almost two years ago.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The comparison startled Hoss; surprised that Adam would go back to that point in their lives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Looking between his two sons, Ben remembered back to that summer, and how he had wished for anything to be able to see his son sitting on his first wild horse. And now that time was at hand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cWorse than a mama grizzly?\u201d Ben settled his pipe in the tray on the table next to his chair.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cNot quite that bad, Pa.\u201d A grin spread across Adam\u2019s face.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cAt least ya weren\u2019t roarin\u2019.\u201d Hoss smiled broadly, his eyes sparkled.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Venturing to stand in front of the fire, Ben held his hands out for warmth. \u201cIt didn\u2019t seem this difficult when you two first started to break the horses.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cYou didn\u2019t exactly have a choice back then; it was something we had to do.\u201d Adam stood and walked to stand beside his father, placing a comforting hand on his shoulder. \u201cWith Joe it\u2019s different. We have other options.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cYeah,\u201d Hoss walked around the low table to stand the other side of Ben. \u201cBut this is somethin&#8217; he wants ta do, and he\u2019s gonna be good at it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cPromise me you\u2019ll watch out for him.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cI always do.\u201d Adam read more into his father\u2019s statement, \u201cYou\u2019re not coming?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Ben shook his head no.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cHe\u2019ll be okay,\u201d Adam stated one last time before bidding his father good night.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The clock struck midnight before Ben banked the fire and headed to his own bedroom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">*****<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Outside his window, Joe viewed the first hint of morning as he watched the black\/grey of night give way to a pale pink sky. Startled from his reverie, Joe jumped at hearing the pounding on his bedroom door. Turning, he acknowledged Hoss standing in the middle of the doorway.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cYa comin\u2019 down? Hop Sing almost has breakfast ready.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cYeah, be down in a minute.\u201d Joe\u2019s voice broke in pitch.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cHey, Shortshanks. You alright?\u201d Hoss stepped farther into the room.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cI\u2019m fine.\u201d Joe walked to the chair by his desk and sat down to pull on his boots.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cYa don\u2019t seem as excited as ya did last night.\u201d Hoss sat on his brother\u2019s bed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Moments passed before Joe spoke. \u201cHoss, what if I let them down?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cWho? Pa and Adam?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Joe nodded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cYa won\u2019t let them down. Ya done everythin\u2019 just the way ya shoulda this week. Why do ya think you\u2019ll let \u2018em down?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cWhat if I get bucked off?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cThen you show \u2018em what yer made of. Ya get up, dust yer britches, and get right back in the saddle.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cWhat if Pa changes his mind?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cHe won\u2019t. Oh, he\u2019ll want to. He always does.\u201d Hoss continued, seeing his brother\u2019s curious expression. \u201cYou ain\u2019t watched him when Adam\u2019s in the saddle. His expressions show how worried he gets. Don\u2019t matter if it\u2019s the first time or the hundredth.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cDo you think I\u2019m really ready for this?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cThe question is, do you think you&#8217;re ready for this?\u201d Hoss asked in reply.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cYeah, I\u2019m ready.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cThen come on. I\u2019m hungry.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cWhen aren\u2019t you?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Together the brothers made their way to the dining room, joining their father and brother just as Hop Sing set a platter stacked with hotcakes on the table.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">*****<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">After arriving at the corrals, Hoss proceeded to organize the men and the equipment, as well as checked to make sure the loading chutes were secure enough for the day\u2019s work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Adam and Joe walked to the corral that held the herd of wild horses. Together with Rudy, they evaluated each animal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cWhich horse would you like to be your first ride, Joe?\u201d Adam asked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cI\u2019m not sure. Which horse do you think?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cNope, I want to see which horse you\u2019d choose.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Joe exhaled deeply. It surprised him when Adam made the offer, he\u2019d figured Rudy and Adam had already decided the order of rotation. Looking the herd over one more time, Joe answered, \u201cThat little bay mare, with the large star sitting off center.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cWhy?\u201d Rudy inquired. \u201cWhat makes you choose her?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cHer eye is softer, she\u2019s a little timid looking. She doesn\u2019t look as wild as the others. For my first ride, I think she might be the one.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cGood job, buddy. That\u2019s exactly who Rudy and I thought to offer up first.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">*****<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Between Adam and Rudy, three horses had been broken during the first hour. When not mounted, the two would stand beside Joe offering their observations and asking Joe questions on each ride he watched. Finally, Adam signaled for the bay mare to be brought over to the corral and saddled.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Ten minutes later, Joe climbed the railing to settle himself in the saddle. Rudy stood on a lower rail on the outside, giving Joe final advice. Adam and Hoss were in charge, but both knew that Rudy was top wrangler and allowed him to have the final words with their brother. Positioned on the inside of the corral and in control of the gate, they waited for their brother to give the signal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Joe took a deep breath and looked around. Adam saw the change overcome his brother; relaxed and prepared to ride, Joe nodded. Hoss pulled open the gate. Adam jumped aside to avoid flailing heels as the mare launched herself high and kicked back.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">With breaths held, the brothers watched and judged where to move to best assist Joe. All around them, ranch hands hooted and hollered, yelling encouragement to the newest bronc rider on the Ponderosa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Ten seconds into the ride, the inevitable happened; Joe was launched from the saddle. As gravity took over, he tucked and curled, rolling and landing safe from any danger. Others were immediately inside the corral, keeping the animal away from the downed rider.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Hoss was first to his brother, with Adam only a step behind. \u201cJoe?!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">A familiar cackle echoed as the lithe body unwound, stood up, and dusted off his britches. \u201cCan I give her another go? Can I?\u201d Eagerness gleamed in his eyes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cYa didn\u2019t get hurt, did ya?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cJust my pride.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cYou can\u2019t expect to be perfect your first day.\u201d Adam surveyed his brother with a critical eye.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cI know Adam, but I felt something and I want to see if it works.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cWhat\u2019s that?\u201d Hoss asked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cI can\u2019t explain it, it was a few moments before she launched me. I just got distracted and lost my concentration. Please?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cOne or two more attempts, and that\u2019s all. You\u2019re going to be wanting a long, hot soaking bath as it is.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">With the mare loaded into the chute and Joe settled on her back, once more he nodded. Again, the mare launched herself out, this time the rider\u2019s posture was different. Gone was most of the awkwardness and the tenacity to hold on for dear life. By the third jump, Joe was in sync with the mare, a number of strides he rode as if he anticipated her movements. A moment later, the mare changed tactics, leaving Joe hanging precariously from the saddle before he righted himself. Thirty seconds into the ride, a winded Joe lost hold and was tossed to the dirt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Gulping for air, he climbed to his feet, not bothering to dust himself off. A smile beamed across his face at hearing his brothers\u2019 encouraging words.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cOne more go?\u201d Joe pleaded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cOne more, and that\u2019s it,\u201d Adam answered, head inclined that meant only one more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Joe petted the mare on the neck before he sat deep in the saddle, feet in the stirrups. With the opening of the gate, the little bay mare didn\u2019t have nearly as much fight. Twenty seconds into the ride she began trotting around. Joe had picked the perfect horse for his introduction to being a bronc rider.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Hoss held the lead to the halter as Adam offered a steadying hand down.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Joe didn\u2019t fight the supporting hand under his arm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cAny loose teeth, little brother?\u201d Hoss asked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cNot this ride,\u201d Joe giggled. \u201cWouldn\u2019t put it past that black, though.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Adam escorted Joe to the main gate of the corral. \u201cGood job, Joe. Why don\u2019t you head on over to the chuck wagon and get something to drink.\u201d Seeing their middle brother hand off the mare, he called, \u201cHoss, go with him.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cThanks Adam.\u201d With stiff legs, Joe walked away.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">*****<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Ben spoke once Adam walked to where he hid behind a corner of the equipment building. \u201cIt\u2019s a lot less painful than I thought.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cQuoting Mohegan, Pa?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cNot really.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cYou need to take lessons on hiding, he saw you.\u201d\u00a0 Merriment shown in Adam&#8217;s eyes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cI didn\u2019t want him to know. I didn\u2019t want to make him nervous.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cBetween you and me, he was scared, until he knew you were here.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cI can\u2019t imagine Joe being scared. This is all he\u2019s talked about this week, need I remind you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cWhen Hoss and I were saddling the horses back in the barn, he told me about their conversation this morning. \u00a0He was worried about disappointing us. You saw him look around before he nodded to open the chute. When he refocused, he was different. I think your being here gave him the courage to believe.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cBelieve what?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cThat you trust all of us enough to let him grow up.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Ben understood, and canted his head towards where his two youngest stood, \u201cWhat do you think they\u2019re talking about?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The brothers leaned against the chuck wagon; Hoss handing his sibling a cup of coffee.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cProbably telling him, don\u2019t squat with your spurs on.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cJoe doesn\u2019t wear spurs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cIt\u2019s just Hoss\u2019 way of getting his point across. I\u2019ve heard him say the same thing to a few other wranglers after their first ride on a bronc.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Ben arched his eyebrows.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cThey\u2019re all a little weak in the knees after the first ride, and he uses squat instead of faint. Remember Harry Crum?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Ben nodded at the old memory, following the man\u2019s first ride he fainted; knees buckled and straight down he went. The points of his rowels impaled themselves into his posterior.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cHoss is just wanting to make sure Joe sits down before he falls down.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cYou did a good job of teaching him.
