Happy Birthday Big Brother<\/strong><\/p>\n

Hey big brother!<\/p>\n

As usual when a holiday or someone\u2019s special day rolls around, I\u2019m out of town on business. Working the lumber camps might not be \u2018real\u2019 business but it sure is work. I suppose I was set up for this\u2026again\u2026being as how we had to draw straws and the shortest straw got stuck doing the dirty work. Somehow I think that you and Hoss planned it that way. You\u2019re always grumbling about how I never pull my weight when it comes to doing the chores or the really hard work\u2026hahaha\u2026you know me pretty well, don\u2019t you Adam?<\/p>\n

It\u2019s nice here, up in the mountains. There\u2019s still a little snow showing, which is nice during the day. Everything\u2019s turning green and I\u2019ve even seen some of the wildflowers starting to peek through where the snow is thinning out. But I didn\u2019t send you this note to talk about flowers\u2026that\u2019s girl stuff\u2026<\/p>\n

I just wanted to wish you happy birthday and to tell you I think you\u2019re about the best big brother a kid\u2026as you call me\u2026could ever have. There have been plenty of times that I\u2019ve gotten myself in some sort of fix and deeper than I should and somehow you\u2019ve always been there to bail my butt out of trouble. I don\u2019t know how you find out about these things, but I\u2019m grateful you do. Someday, Adam, you\u2019ll make a great father\u2026what with all the training you\u2019ve had looking after me and Hoss\u2026well\u2026me mostly. Oh, don\u2019t forget about that girl I invited to your party. Her name is Lulu\u2026I told her to be sure to introduce herself to you. Be nice to her, big brother\u2026she\u2019s just your type!<\/p>\n

Save me some cake, will you? You know chocolate is my favorite\u2026hey\u2026and dance a dance with my girl for me alright? Tell her I\u2019m sorry I missed the party, and tell her too, that I promise to make it up to her\u2026<\/p>\n

I hope you like what I got you. It isn\u2019t much, but I had to send all the way to San Francisco to get it for you. I looked in your bookcase to be sure you didn\u2019t already have a copy of that title and you didn\u2019t, so you won\u2019t have to worry about having a duplicate. I started to read the book first, but golly dang, Adam\u2026I couldn\u2019t pronounce half those words and what words I could say\u2026I didn\u2019t know what they meant and none of it made any sense to me. I guess that\u2019s where your education comes in handy\u2026I\u2019ll just stick to busting broncos!<\/p>\n

Pa and Hoss have a special surprise for you too\u2026I can\u2019t tell you what it is, but I have no doubt that you\u2019ll like it and if you don\u2019t, I\u2019ll take it\u2026cause he sure is a \u2018beauty.\u2019<\/p>\n

The men are starting to come back to camp now, so I guess I\u2019d better close and give this to a messenger. I have a fellow who said he\u2019d deliver if for me just for the price of a piece of your birthday cake, so be sure he gets one, will you?<\/p>\n

Again, Adam\u2026happy birthday\u2026and thanks for being my brother. I know I can be thorn in your side most of the time, but honestly big guy\u2026most of the time I don\u2019t mean too. I think you\u2019re the very best and I just wanted you to know. Have a great night\u2026I wish I could be there with you to celebrate your special day. I can\u2019t, but I\u2019ll be thinking about you\u2026You\u2019re what now\u202630\u2026or is it 31? Another year or so and you\u2019ll be an old man\u2026hahhaa..<\/p>\n

Adam chuckled softly to himself and folded the note up and tucked into his breast pocket, close to his heart. For all the kid\u2019s faults, he love his little brother\u2026 \u201cThanks kid,\u201d Adam muttered. \u201cI wish you were here too\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWho are you talking too?\u201d Ben said as he stood behind his eldest son.<\/p>\n

Adam spun around, embarrassed to be caught talking to himself.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell?\u201d insisted Ben.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou won\u2019t laugh?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course not, son\u2026at least not on your birthday\u2026\u201d smiled Ben.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was talking to\u2026Little Joe.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ben\u2019s eyes widened. \u201cLittle Joe?\u201d<\/p>\n

Adam tapped his breast where the note was hidden away in his pocket.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe sent a messenger down from the mountains with a note for me,\u201d Adam explained.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh\u2026what did the note say?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe wanted to wish me happy birthday and to tell that he\u2026that he\u2026\u201d Adam swallowed hard. It wasn\u2019t often that he got choked up, but the sentimental remembrance made by his little brother had touched him more than he had realized until right at the moment.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe wanted to tell you that he loved you\u2026didn\u2019t he?\u201d smiled Ben.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah\u2026but how did you know?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHow did I know? I\u2019ve always known, son\u2026that your brother\u2026brothers, loved you. Oh, they might not show it often, especially Little Joe\u2026but they do. I know you and boy aren\u2019t always able to see eye to eye on things, but he\u2019s loyal to you\u2026just as you are to him. And no matter what problem arises between you two\u2026you both seem to always be able to work it out. You\u2019re a good role model for the boy, Adam. You\u2019ll make a great father someday\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Adam chuckled softly.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s so funny, son?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cJoe said the same thing\u2026about being a good father someday. I was just wondering if you and he are plotting together on something I should be aware of?\u201d<\/p>\n

Ben faked a surprise, but he grinned broadly.<\/p>\n

\u201cUs? What makes you think we\u2019d do that?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, maybe not you, Pa\u2026but definitely my little brother. Something tells me he\u2019d like to see me get married and move out\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAdam!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, he\u2019s said more than once that he\u2019d love to have a bedroom as big as mine\u2026sooo\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Ben laughed again as he slipped his arm about his son\u2019s shoulders.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have a notion that even from a distance, Joe has made you somewhat nervous about this party tonight\u2026am I right?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cProbably\u2026he did say that there was a girl coming that he wanted me to meet\u2026when he said, \u2018Adam, she will knock your socks off\u2019, I got to thinking\u2026I\u2019d best make sure the kid draws the shortest match\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou didn\u2019t!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI did!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShame on you\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know\u2026something tells me I\u2019m gonna regret it\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHEY ADAM! LOOKY HERE\u2026THIS HERE IS LULU BELL SOCKSOFFT\u2019 Hoss said none too quietly. \u201cJoe wanted you to meet her!\u2019<\/p>\n

Adam turned around to see Hoss heading straight towards him. Hoss\u2019 arm was slipped over the arm of a young woman\u2026all the guests had turned to stare in awe at the voluptuous woman with the low cut dress. He suffered himself not to look below the woman\u2019s neckline, but there was no way to avoid seeing her\u2026virtues.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh for Pete\u2019s sake,\u201d Adam muttered under his breath as he quickly assessed the woman. \u201cI\u2019ll kill him for this\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Behind him, he heard his father snicker.<\/p>\n

\u201cBe nice son\u2026remember your manners\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOh\u2026don\u2019t worry, Pa\u2026I won\u2019t forget a thing\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n
