It was very disconcerting talking to two of the same people and getting two echoing responses. His dizziness had retreated as well, and only remnants of a headache reared its head off and on throughout the day. He was on the mend. And none too soon. Tomorrow the trial would start and, he hoped, Red would be off to jail or the hangman\u2019s noose. Everything had returned to normal . . . everything that is except Hoss.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHoss?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothin\u2019,\u201d came his answer, the same answer he always gave and it was beginning to drive Adam crazy.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Fingers quickly found the healing depression on the side of his head and Adam\u2019s thoughts traveled back to what happened the day a bullet nearly ended his life, about what had gone through his mind the moment he\u2019d found himself facing down Red\u2019s gun and all that could\u2019ve been lost.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYer thinkin\u2019 on it again, ain\u2019t ya?\u201d Hoss asked, the words taking a moment to seep into Adam\u2019s brain and pull him back to the present.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYer thinkin\u2019 on it\u2026on what happened with Red.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Adam narrowed his eyes. \u201cHow did you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2019Cause ya always run yer finger over yer scar and get that faraway look in them eyes of your\u2019n.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Quickly pulling his hand from his head like he\u2019d been caught sneaking cookies, Adam closed the book in his lap and sat up a bit straighter in his chair.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYa was, wasn\u2019t ya?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Adam met his brother\u2019s look with a raised brow. \u201cIt\u2019s only been three weeks, Hoss, and you know how I am. I dwell on everything.\u201d He\u2019d hoped to put something like a smile on his brother\u2019s face and wasn\u2019t disappointed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, that\u2019s fer true. I ain\u2019t seen no one think a problem ta death like you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Adam answered with a smirk and a nod of the head. \u201cTrue, very true.\u201d Knowing he would have to pull any information from Hoss, he decided now was the best time. \u201cIf you\u2019re going to make me guess what the problem is, let\u2019s start with the obvious. Red\u2019s trial starts tomorrow and you\u2019re worried he\u2019s going to get off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Hoss shook his head. \u201cNaw. Miss Mary\u2019s testimony should take care \u2018o that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay\u2026 how about you\u2019re worried your shoulder isn\u2019t going to be sound enough for you to head up the cattle drive next month?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Hoss\u2019 brows flew up. \u201cDang! I hadn\u2019t thought on that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Oh crap! Shouldn\u2019t\u2019ve said anything.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019ll be fine so don\u2019t worry,\u201d Adam hastily added. \u201cAh, how about Pa\u2019s birthday present? You ordered that new saddle two months ago and it hasn\u2019t arrived yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDamn! I forgot about that, too!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I did it again!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, then I\u2019ve run out of ideas!\u201d Adam said, exasperation filling his voice. Tossing his book onto the coffee table, he clasped his hands together and drilled his brother with a glare. \u201cThere\u2019s something wrong, Hoss, and I want to help because I think I might be the problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou ain\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI catch you staring at me and you look away. That means I\u2019ve done something, so out with it! And if you say there\u2019s nothing wrong, I\u2019m gonna come over there and beat it outta you!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Hoss stood then and Adam quickly followed suit, consciously leaning towards the front door. He was pretty sure he could make it to the safety of the yard before Hoss since he was still recovering but he wasn\u2019t going to leave it to chance. He knew how fast his brother could move when he wanted too.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But Hoss stayed put, stuffing his right hand in his pocket and turning toward the darkened fireplace, heaving a heavy sigh. Deciding he wouldn\u2019t have to hightail it out of the house after all, Adam relaxed and sat on the table, planting his feet on the hearth, and waited. He didn\u2019t have to wait long.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry,\u201d came his brother\u2019s voice barely above a whisper.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Inwardly Adam groaned, recalling a similar statement from his father some days before. Well, at least he knew Hoss was suffering from the same thing his family was \u2013 a case of the guilts. He might as well ask the question. \u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d Hoss repeated looking upon his brother perched on the table. \u201cFor bringin\u2019 all this down on ya,\u201d he answered pointing at his brother\u2019s head. \u201cFor almost gettin\u2019 ya killed that\u2019s what.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Adam couldn\u2019t take it anymore. \u201cOh, for pete\u2019s sake!\u201d he said shooting to his feet. \u201cDoes everyone in this family think <em><u>they<\/u><\/em> pulled the trigger?!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Hoss\u2019 eyes grew wide. \u201cAdam, I\u2026\u201d he fumbled.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI suppose Hop Sing thinks he shot me, too, huh?!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, Mister Adam,\u201d came Hop Sing\u2019s answer as he placed a tray of cookies and milk on the table behind him. \u201cMe no have anything to do with that. Eat cookies.\u201d Quickly, he scurried from the room as the brothers looked after him.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The burst of frustration leaving him in a flash, Adam plopped back down on the table. \u201cWell, at least <em><u>he<\/u><\/em> doesn\u2019t think he shot me,\u201d he said with a sigh. Hoss settled next to his brother, catching the heartfelt gaze Adam cast upon him. \u201cAnd neither did you or Joe or Pa,\u201d he finished. \u201cRed Twilight shot me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut if\u2019n I hadn\u2019t ki\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou-didn\u2019t-kill-Willie,\u201d Adam interrupted, enunciating each word. \u201cGet that out of your head. It was an accident. You shoving him had nothing to do with his death.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut he\u2019s still dead, Adam.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe so but <em><u>you<\/u><\/em> didn\u2019t do it. You heard Mary. He had a bad heart, he\u2019d taken up drinking and picking fights. He had a death wish. Unfortunately, you happened to be there when he died. But, Hoss, it wasn\u2019t <em><u>your<\/u><\/em> fault. You can\u2019t go on blaming yourself for something <em><u>you<\/u><\/em> <em><u>didn\u2019t<\/u><\/em> <em><u>do<\/u><\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt ain\u2019t that easy, Adam. It was my hands that shoved him. I know that just an itty bitty shove from me can send <em><u>you<\/u><\/em> across the room. Willie was half Joe\u2019s size.\u201d Hoss held up his hands. \u201cHe popped his head against the column then dropped ta the ground. These hands did that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Adam quickly grabbed them. \u201cThese are the hands of a gentle man. Big as they are, they can hold a newborn kitten as carefully as mine; they bring love and life to those less fortunate; and they belong to my brother who I know would never intentionally hurt a living creature, human or otherwise. <em><u>You<\/u><\/em> are a tender soul, Hoss. I know that because of the guilt you feel for something that wasn\u2019t even your fault.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Hoss slowly pulled his hands from his brother\u2019s and stared down at the floor. \u201cThat may be . . . but Willie still died.\u201d Adam laid a hand on Hoss\u2019 shoulder and squeezed. \u201cAnd, because \u2018o that Red came gunnin\u2019 fer me. That I don\u2019t mind \u2018cause I cain\u2019t say I wouldn\u2019t\u2019ve done the same. But he went after you and that ain\u2019t right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s a murderer, Hoss. He shot down Tandy<sup>1<\/sup> without a second thought.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd besides . . . it was my fault I was shot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Hoss turned a perplexed look toward his brother. \u201cHow can gettin\u2019 shot in yer own home be yer fault?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was my own stupidity that put me in that situation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHuh?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThink about it, Hoss,\u201d Adam began. \u201cThe latch on the front door makes a noise. That\u2019s what tipped off Red. He had the drop on me from the get-go. I just got lucky he didn\u2019t kill me. I might <em><u>not<\/u><\/em> be so lucky next time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe next time ya\u2019ll come through the kitchen,\u201d Hoss gave him as Adam nodded.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s hope there isn\u2019t a next time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Hoss looked at his brother then, saw something in those dark eyes and wondered if he felt a little of that guilt the whole family was passing around.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYa told me ya looked down Red\u2019s barrel and knew yer number was up,\u201d Hoss started as Adam nodded.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHad me dead to rights,\u201d he admitted.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did ya think about right at that moment when ya thought ya was a goner?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Adam gave him a small smile. \u201cYou\u2019ll think I\u2019m crazy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShoot, Adam, I already do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>They both chuckled at the comment, then Adam quickly sobered as fields of wild lavender and blue bonnets and marigolds filled his head.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought of you and me and Pa crossing the plains on our way to Nevada, thought of all the flowers and fish and flocks of birds we\u2019d seen, all the people we\u2019d met and left behind, and how sad I was to be leaving you and Joe and Pa. It\u2019s amazing what comes to mind, how disjointed and unimportant they seem at the time but when you look back, they mean everything.\u201d He paused a moment, the smile slowly leaving his face, his voice becoming quiet. \u201cAnd the hardest memory to face was your mama.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMama?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Adam barely nodded resting his chin on his hand. \u201cI thought about\u2026about how I\u2019d failed her, failed to protect her son like I\u2019d promised.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh, Adam\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat moment hurt the most.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Hoss watched his brother, watched the pain flicker across his face.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew she couldn\u2019t hear me when I whispered my vow in her ear right before they buried her, but <em><u>I<\/u><\/em> could and I took it to heart. It was the last thing I could do for her.\u201d He turned toward Hoss. \u201cYou were my responsibility from the minute you took your first breath until I took my last. I was so hoping Joe would do what I couldn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe did,\u201d Hoss said with a toothy grin. \u201cHe beat the tar outta Red.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes he did,\u201d Adam smiled back. \u201cAnd he almost did something else, too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know and that worried me somethin\u2019 awful,\u201d Hoss agreed. \u201cI tried ta tell Pa but the words just wasn\u2019t there. I couldn\u2019t let that boy ruin his life but I could hardly move. I didn\u2019t even know you was in the house so all\u2019s I could think about was Joe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s all right, Hoss.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, no it ain\u2019t, Adam. Ya cain\u2019t always be the one that no one worries about. I don\u2019t care that yer the oldest. Shouldn\u2019t matter,\u201d Hoss quickly added when he saw Adam open his mouth to protest then quickly shut it when he found himself on the receiving end of a Hoss glare. \u201cWhen I came out ta the barn, I saw ya, I spoke ta ya but I was just so darned relieved Joe hadn\u2019t killed Red, I weren\u2019t worried about you. Yer always thinkin\u2019 straight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot always.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLike when?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s see&#8230;\u201d Adam began rubbing his hands together. \u201cHow about Regina Darien<sup>2<\/sup> or Frederick Kyle<sup>3 <\/sup>\u2026or Sam Bryant<sup>4<\/sup>,\u201d he said looking into the fireplace as Hoss shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCain\u2019t include Sam Bryant in that group. You was one of the few that kept yer head that night. Them others, well, no one can think straight when their heart\u2019s all a flutter and their dander\u2019s up. It\u2019s just that yer always keepin\u2019 things together, keepin\u2019 all \u2018o us goin\u2019 whether we want too or not. Ya kept us together when Joe\u2019s mama died and Pa just wasn\u2019t hisself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut this time I nearly got myself killed\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoin\u2019 what\u2019cha do \u2013 takin\u2019 care \u2018o us. And we didn\u2019t take care \u2018o you, plain and simple.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHoss\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYa might be able ta change my mind about Willie,\u201d Hoss began, heat entering his words, \u201cbut yer never gonna change my mind about not seein\u2019 yer bloody face or not knowin\u2019 you was hurt \u2018til ya hit the floor. We all share in that bit \u2018o guilt, Adam. Ya ain\u2019t no stranger. Yer our brother and son and we love ya. And I want ta apologize so just let me!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Adam watched his brother\u2019s face burn with anger and knew he didn\u2019t have a choice. In the long run, it didn\u2019t really matter if <em><u>he<\/u><\/em> thought no one should have guilt, they did and if he was the only way out for that guilt\u2026then so be it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGo ahead,\u201d he said, seeing that anger melt away.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll right then,\u201d Hoss nodded then peered into his brother\u2019s face. \u201cI\u2019m sorry that my\u2026accident with Willie brought Red down upon ya and I\u2019m sorry that I didn\u2019t see ya was hurt at the barn. Won\u2019t never happen again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNever?\u201d Adam grinned.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNever, big brother,\u201d Hoss answered with a smile as he slapped his brother on the leg. \u201cI\u2019ll be askin\u2019 if\u2019n ya feel alright when ya gotta hangnail.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh, please don\u2019t,\u201d Adam laughed as Hoss joined in.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will and ya know it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do,\u201d Adam answered with a nod, his eyes never leaving his brother\u2019s face, so happy he was still around to worry about his brothers. \u201cI accept your apology, little brother,\u201d he gave him, a seriousness shading his face. \u201cDon\u2019t <em><u>ever<\/u><\/em> let it happen again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYessir,\u201d Hoss answered, pulling Adam into a one handed hug that was returned gratefully. Hoss released his brother and they both peered into the fireplace, comfortable in the silence.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Adam so hoped this was the last of the guilt talks because he just didn\u2019t have the energy for anymore and, since Hop Sing wasn\u2019t playing \u2013 <em>thank goodness &#8211;<\/em> he was pretty sure he was off that play-list at last. It\u2019s not that he didn\u2019t appreciate the love his family had for him; it was just that enough was enough!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Grandfather clock chimed off the hour as Adam spied Hop Sing closing the dining room shutters for the evening, surprised at the hour.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know,\u201d he began drawing Hoss\u2019 attention. \u201cI\u2019m thinking you better be getting yourself off to bed, little brother. We\u2019ve got to get up early for court tomorrow and you know Pa\u2019s due home right about\u2026 now.\u201d As if on cue, hoofbeats arose from the yard and Hoss moved hastily to his feet.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe did say I was supposed ta be restin\u2019, didn\u2019t he?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn bed, if I remember correctly,\u201d Adam added with a half smile, reaching for his book lying on the table. \u201cHurry. I\u2019ll cover.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThanks, Adam.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGo on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Quickly retaking his seat in the blue chair, Adam cast a glance at his brother moving hurriedly up the stairs, hearing his door close just as the front door opened onto his father and younger brother.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHey, Pa, Joe,\u201d Adam called, innocence shining from his face as he opened his book. \u201cHop Sing left some dinner for you on the stove,\u201d he finished absently.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Joe\u2019s eyes moved from Adam, whose long legs stretched out on the table, to the cookies and milk at the other end and shook his head. \u201cWould you look at this, Pa,\u201d he began as he sauntered over to the table. \u201cWe\u2019ve been out working hard and this one\u2019s sitting here eating all the cookies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh, geez,\u201d Adam said as he shut his book and jumped to his feet, whipping the plate out from under Joe\u2019s reaching hand. \u201cI was supposed to take those up to Hoss.
