Moving slowly through the shimmering waves of heat, each rider led another horse across the sandy soil. One figure stopped his mount and reached for one of the two canteens tied to his saddle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI still don\u2019t see why we have to ride these horses home,\u201d complained Joe Cartwright, sitting atop the stopped horse. He took a drink from the canteen, then wiped the sweat from his forehead with his shirt sleeve. \u201cIt would have been easier to hire someone to bring these horses to the Ponderosa, and take the stage home from Sand Springs like we planned.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joe\u2019s father pulled his own horse to a halt. \u201cLike I told you, these horses are too valuable to trust to a couple of hired hands,\u201d Ben Cartwright answered patiently. \u201cI hadn\u2019t planned to buy them but I couldn\u2019t pass up a chance to add stallions of this quality to our stock. Besides, I sent a telegram to Fort Hitchcock, telling Adam and Hoss to wait there for us after delivering the remounts. They\u2019ll help us get these horses back.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYeah, well, they don\u2019t have to ride across this desert,\u201d Joe grumbled.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019ll be at the Fort by night,\u201d observed Ben. \u201cYou can take a bath and have a nice dinner then. Now let\u2019s get moving.\u201d He chucked his horse forward.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sighing, Joe lightly kicked his mount, urging the animal on. He\u2019d rather be riding the stage than crossing this seemingly endless land of rocks and sand. But Joe knew his father. Once Ben Cartwright made up his mind, he was as immovable as the Sierra Mountains at home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After riding silently for another mile or so, the two men approached a tall mound of boulders. Ben was about to suggest they stop for a rest when a shot rang out. The bullet hit the ground a few feet in front of Ben\u2019s horse, and was quickly followed by another bullet which crossed in from of Joe\u2019s mount. All the horses whinnied and shied, dancing nervously away from the gunfire. As Joe and Ben struggled to control the animals, a gang of men rode out from behind the rocks and surrounded the two riders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Ben and Joe finally got the horses calmed, the two Cartwrights looked around. Men with guns drawn had formed a semi-circle around the two riders. Joe counted ten pistols aimed at him and his father. He slowly raised his hands, and Ben did the same.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A man about forty, with dark hair and a half-moon scar under his right eye, rode forward. \u201cI\u2019ve been waiting for someone to buy these horses,\u201d declared the man, giving the Cartwrights a nasty grin. \u201cI was beginning to think I would have to ride into Sand Springs and get them myself. Now, you fellows be smart and get down real slow.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joe looked at Ben, who nodded at his son. As both men dismounted, two of the bandits rode forward and grabbed the reins of the horses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDrop those gun belts,\u201d the man with the scar ordered. Joe and Ben obeyed, unbuckling the belts around their hips and letting them fall to the ground. Another of the bandits dismounted and walked forward. He picked up the gunbelts from the ground, then snatched the hats from both Ben\u2019s and Joe\u2019s heads. The Cartwright looked at the man in surprise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNow start walking,\u201d ordered the apparent leader of the band, gesturing with his gun toward the open expanse of sand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou can\u2019t expect us to cross this desert on foot without water!\u201d Ben cried in a frantic voice. \u201cWe\u2019ll never make it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf you say so,\u201d answered the outlaw, shrugging indifferently. \u201cI could shoot you here, but I don\u2019t want to upset these stallions. You have ten seconds to start walking. If you don\u2019t, I\u2019ll take the risk and finish you off right here.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swallowing hard, Joe glanced at his father. Either choice seemed to mean certain death.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cJust give us a canteen,\u201d pleaded Ben. \u201cGive us a chance!\u201d Looking around, Ben sought some sign of compassion from at least one of the men, but found none. His plea fell on deaf ears as the outlaws stared back coldly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGet moving,\u201d the man with the scar ordered again. \u201cYou have about five seconds left before we start shooting.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With a grim look on his face, Ben took a few steps forward, then stopped. He turned back toward the bandits. \u201cYou\u2019ll pay for this,\u201d he promised.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYeah, right,\u201d scoffed the outlaw. \u201cC\u2019mon boys, let\u2019s go.\u201d The men turned their horses and rode off.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Walking up to his father, Joe asked, \u201cWhat do we do now?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe start walking,\u201d Ben answered grimly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHow far is it to Fort Hitchcock?\u201d Joe questioned, a trace of fear in his voice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ben shook his head. \u201cI don\u2019t know\u2026twenty miles at least.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDo you think we can make it?\u201d pressed Joe, the fear in his voice more apparent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019ll make it,\u201d Ben assured his son with a confidence he didn\u2019t feel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">**********<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sun beat down mercilessly on the two men as they walked across the empty land. Neither spoke as they trod mechanically through the sandy dirt. Ben thought about their situation. Joe at 22 was young, healthy, and strong. Even though much older, Ben had been hardened by years of work on the Ponderosa. Their chances were better than most, but the odds were still against them reaching the fort.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Looking at the endless wasteland as they walked, Joe wondered if his father would be able to make it to Fort Hitchcock. Like most young men, he had no doubt about his own strength and abilities, but he was concerned for his father. Joe hoped Ben would have the strength to make the trek.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As they walked, Joe and Ben looked for shade but found none. Ben searched the landscape for any sign of water, any plant that could give them moisture, but that search also was in vain. The two men continued plodding across the dirt as the blazing sun shone brightly above them. Sweat beaded their faces; their lips began to dry and crack. As time passed, their pace slowed. Finally, Ben stopped.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLet\u2019s rest a bit,\u201d suggested Ben, sitting down. Joe sank to the ground next to his father.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHow far do you think we\u2019ve come?\u201d asked Joe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA couple of miles, maybe,\u201d answered Ben wearily.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joe closed his eyes. Twenty miles to Fort Hitchcock and they\u2019d covered two or three. He couldn\u2019t bear to think of the distanced they still had to travel in this heat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The two men sat quietly for a few minutes, then Ben stood and looked down at his son. \u201cCome on, Joe,\u201d he urged. \u201cWe have to keep moving.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nodding, Joe brushed his right hand against a small pile of rocks as he began to stand. Suddenly, he felt a sharp stab in his arm. As he yelled in pain, Joe looked down at the rocks and caught a glimpse of a scorpion scurrying into a crevice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cJoe, what\u2019s wrong?\u201d asked Ben anxiously.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cScorpion. He got me right above the wrist,\u201d Joe replied, holding his right arm against his chest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kneeling next to his son, Ben pulled Joe\u2019s arm toward him. He shoved the shirt sleeve up and looked at the puncture mark which was already turning red. Quickly untying the bandanna from around his neck, Ben looped the cloth around Joe\u2019s arm as tightly as possible, and then knotted it. He hoped the make-shift tourniquet would cut off the circulation and stop the poison from spreading.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cJoe, I\u2019ve got to find something to cut open that wound,\u201d Ben said, trying to keep the panic out of his voice. Joe gritted his teeth and nodded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ben\u2019s head swiveled around as he tried to find something that was sharp enough to cut Joe\u2019s arm. Spotting some rocks a few feet away, he ran to the pile of rubble and began sorting through it. He picked up a small, thin stone with an uneven edge and ran his finger lightly over it, testing its sharpness. It wasn\u2019t honed to a fine edge like a knife, but the serrated stone seemed sharp enough to slice some skin. Deciding this was the best tool he could find quickly, Ben carried the rock back to Joe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Returning to his son, Ben could see Joe was cradling his right arm. The limb was beginning to swell and Joe\u2019s narrowed eyes showed the pain the wound was causing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gently pulling Joe\u2019s arm toward him, Ben untied and removed the bandanna. He pressed the rock into the injured limb, just above the puncture marks. The edge of the stone bit into the skin, causing a small tickle of blood. Ben pressed harder and sawed the rock a bit, slicing the skin even more. As Joe\u2019s arm started to bleed more heavily, Ben dropped the rock and put his hands on either side of the wound. He pressed hard on Joe\u2019s arm, causing the jagged cut to open up. He prayed that the poison was flowing out of the wound with the blood.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After letting the cut bleed for about a minute, Ben removed his hands. He wrapped the bandanna around Joe\u2019s arm again, tying it tightly over both the sliced skin and the puncture mark. Finally, Ben sat back on his heels and looked at Joe. His son\u2019s face was pale and Joe\u2019s eyes reflected the pain he was feeling. \u201cJoe, there\u2019s nothing more I can do,\u201d Ben told his son. \u201cDo you think you can walk?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m not saying here,\u201d Joe answered in a tight voice. \u201cGive me a hand.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After helping Joe to his feet, Ben grabbed his son\u2019s left arm when Joe staggered a bit. He urged his son forward, and the two men started walking again. Joe cradled his injured arm against his chest, holding his right elbow with his left hand. Ben walked close to his son, ready to offer help if Joe needed it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The two men had walked only a few hundred yards when Joe suddenly stopped. He shuddered, and a look of intense pain crossed his face. Joe clutched his arm tightly to his chest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cJoe, what\u2019s wrong?\u201d asked Ben in an alarmed voice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Holding his arm tightly, Joe glanced at his father. His arm felt like it was on fire and his stomach was churning. His head was throbbing and his heart was racing. But Joe knew there was nothing Ben could do to help him. \u201cI\u2019m all right, Pa,\u201d Joe assured his father in a weak voice. Then he shuddered again, and his knees began to buckle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grabbing his son\u2019s left arm, Ben threw it over his shoulders. \u201cI\u2019ll help you, Joe,\u201d Ben stated. \u201cWe\u2019ve got to keep walking. Just lean on me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For a moment, Joe closed his eyes, then he nodded and started forward. Trying not to put too much weight on his father\u2019s shoulders, Joe staggered ahead for a step or two. Ben steadied his son, placing his hand on Joe\u2019s back. The two men began walking again across the sand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Cartwrights spent the next two hours slowly trudging through the desert, with Joe leaning more and more on his father as they walked. Ben kept urging his son on, pointing out small bushes or outcropping of rocks ahead of them, and then announcing their arrival at the landmark to Joe when the pair reached it. He wanted these small victories to give Joe some hope that they were making progress. But Joe didn\u2019t seem to care. His head hung down, and his eyes were barely open.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, Ben became too tired to talk. He simply walked, half-carrying Joe through the sand. Joe\u2019s gait became more of a stagger, and Ben gripped his son even tighter. The two were nearing a flat piece of ground when Joe sank to his knees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019ve got to rest,\u201d Joe gasped, \u201cI\u2019ve got to rest.\u201d He fell to the ground on his side and closed his eyes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sitting down next to his son, Ben couldn\u2019t remember ever being so tired, hot and thirsty. He glanced at Joe, knowing his son must feel even worse. Joe\u2019s arm was swollen, and the younger Cartwright was grimacing with pain. Ben wondered what he would do when Joe could no longer walk. He knew he couldn\u2019t carry his son very far. Taking a deep breath, Ben forced himself to think of nothing but getting across the desert, nothing but getting help for Joe. He refused to consider the alternative to reaching Fort Hitchcock.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cC\u2019mon, Joe,\u201d Ben declared in a tired voice, \u201cwe have to keep moving. We can\u2019t stay here.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With what seemed a herculean effort, Joe opened his eyes, then tried to sit up. He barely raised his head before collapsing back on to the ground. Joe stared off in the distance, trying to muster the strength to stand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suddenly, Joe raised his body from the ground and started crawling. \u201cWater!\u201d Joe cried through cracked and dried lips. \u201cI see water up ahead.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Looking over the shimmering sand, Ben saw waves of heat and seemingly endless miles of rocky dirt, but no water. Nevertheless, Joe was struggling to move forward, clawing his way across the ground. \u201cWater,\u201d Joe repeated in a soft voice. \u201cI see water.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once more, Ben gazed out at the desert in front of him. He stared hard, trying to see what his son had seen. All Ben saw was simmering waves of heat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With a look of anguish on his face, Ben took a step to where Joe was crawling. He grabbed his son by the shoulders and pulled the young man gently to him. \u201cNo, Joe,\u201d said Ben in a voice tinged with both sadness and exhaustion. \u201cThere\u2019s no water. It\u2019s just a mirage.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Struggling, Joe tried to free himself from his father\u2019s grasp. \u201cI see it, Pa,\u201d insisted Joe. \u201cI can see the water.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ben tightened his hold on Joe. \u201cNo, Joe, no,\u201d Ben stated again. \u201cThere\u2019s no water. He shook Joe hard, then turned his son\u2019s face toward him. \u201cListen to me, Joe,\u201d Ben urged his son. \u201cJoe, it\u2019s a mirage. There is no water.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Twisting his body, Joe continued to struggle until he seemed to run out of strength. Breathing hard, Joe stared at the sand in front of him. \u201cWater,\u201d he murmured in a low voice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gently turning Joe\u2019s face back to him, Ben one more tried to get Joe to listen to him. \u201cJoe, there\u2019s no water. There\u2019s just rocks and sand. Do you understand me? It\u2019s a mirage. There\u2019s no water.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Staring at his father, Joe repeated weakly, \u201cNo water?\u201d Ben shook his head. Joe slumped against his father, the last of his strength seeming to drain away.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ben stroked Joe\u2019s head gently, letting his son rest for a few minutes. Joe was in worse shape than he thought, Ben decided. He sat in the desert heat, holding his son until he realized he could sit there no longer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cJoe, we\u2019ve got to keep going,\u201d Ben told his son. \u201cIf we stay here, we\u2019ll die.\u201d Joe simply laid on the sand, making no attempt to move. After taking a deep breath, Ben lifted Joe, forcing him to stand, and then put his son\u2019s left arm over his shoulder. Joe leaned heavily on his father as Ben struggled to take a few steps. The weight of his son and his own failing strength made it difficult for Ben to walk. The pair moved forward about 30 yards, with Ben literally dragging Joe. Suddenly, Joe slipped from his father\u2019s grasp and fell to the ground.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cJoe, get up,\u201d Ben ordered in an exhausted voice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shaking his head almost imperceptibly, Joe whispered, \u201cI cant.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kneeling next to his son, Ben tried his sternest voice. \u201cJoseph, get to your feet. Do you hear me? Get up! Now!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI can\u2019t,\u201d Joe murmured. \u201cI can\u2019t\u2026go on. Leave me here. No sense both of us\u2026\u201d Joe\u2019s voice trailed off as he sunk into unconsciousness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cradling his son in his arms, Ben shook Joe. \u201cJoe, please,\u201d he begged, \u201cplease get up.\u201d But there was no response from the limp figure in his arms. Ben held his son tightly and looked around, desperate for help and praying for a miracle. He almost didn\u2019t believe his eyes when he spotted the figure on a horse in the distance. Ben shook his head and rubbed his eyes. The figure was still there, watching silently.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Laying Joe gently on the ground, Ben got up and started running toward his only hope for help. He ran for a couple of yards, then tripped and fell. Ben picked himself up and looked around. The horse and its rider were gone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shoulders slumped in despair, Ben turned to walk slowly back to where Joe lay on the ground. He sank to his knees when he reached his son. If he and Joe were going to die, at least they would be together, Ben thought. He gently stroked Joe\u2019s head. Suddenly, a wave of dizziness washed over Ben. The heat and exertion of the run were too much for him. An almost welcome blackness overwhelmed Ben as he fell to the ground by his son.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">**********<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sound of taps accompanied the darkening sky at Fort Hitchcock. Hoss Cartwright sat on the porch outside the post commissary, staring anxiously at the gate of the fort. \u201cWhere do you think they are, Adam?\u201d Hoss asked. \u201cShouldn\u2019t they be here by now?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cStop worrying,\u201d replied Adam Cartwright as he stretched out next to his brother. \u201cThere are a hundred things that could have delayed them. Pa\u2019s telegram said he\u2019d try to be here by tonight but he wasn\u2019t sure.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYeah, but Adam, that\u2019s a lot of desert they had to cross. It\u2019s full of Indians, bandits, and who knows what else,\u201d insisted Hoss<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou\u2019re turning into a real worrywart, you know that?\u201d Adam observed. \u201cJust because Pa and Joe are a little late, you\u2019re starting to imagine all kinds of things. Pa can take care of himself and Joe can too. Just relax, will you?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI don\u2019t know, Adam,\u201d Hoss said in a doubtful tone. \u201cI just have this bad feeling. I think we ought to go look for them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLook for them?\u201d repeated Adam in an astonished voice. \u201cHead out into the desert in the middle of the night? Are you crazy?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWell, we can go as soon as it\u2019s light,\u201d Hoss maintained stubbornly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adam shook his head. \u201cLook, you\u2019re getting all upset over nothing. Pa and Joe will be here with those horses sometime tomorrow. You\u2019re going to feel pretty foolish when they ride in here.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYeah but what if they don\u2019t?\u201d Hoss persisted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf they don\u2019t show up tomorrow, I\u2019ll get the colonel to send out a patrol and we\u2019ll go looking for them,\u201d promised Adam. \u201cBut I don\u2019t think it\u2019s going to be necessary.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once more, Hoss turned his gaze to the gate at the front of the fort. \u201cI wish we could go now,\u201d he said softly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adam clapped his brother on the shoulder. \u201cJust relax, will you? Look, let\u2019s go over to the cook house. I\u2019ll be the cook has some of that pie left. That\u2019ll make you feel better. Then we\u2019ll get some sleep. Everything will seem better in the morning.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI guess so,\u201d Hoss agreed with a sigh. Then his face brightened. \u201cThat was pretty good pie, wasn\u2019t it. Maybe another piece or two will make me feel better.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now it was Adam\u2019s turn to sigh. \u201cSomehow, I thought it might.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">**********<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> His eyes felt gritty and tired as Ben slowly opened them. He looked around, surprised to find himself lying on a bed in a dim room with stone walls. A damp cloth was on his forehead and an ointment of some sort had been smeared on his sunburned face. Someone had removed his boots and opened his shirt before covering Ben with a light blanket.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suddenly, the memory of what had happened flooded into Ben\u2019s mind. \u201cJoe?\u201d he called as he abruptly sat up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Looking to his left, Ben saw another bed. Joe was lying on the bed, covered with a blanket and with a cloth on his forehead also. Someone had removed Joe\u2019s shirt as well; his bare shoulders and chest were visible above the blanket. Joe\u2019s forearm was heavily bandaged from hand to elbow. Ben could hear his son\u2019s breathing \u2013 rapid and labored. He also could see the beads of sweat that covered Joe\u2019s body.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quickly, Ben climbed out of the bed and crossed the room to his son. \u201cJoe?\u201d he repeated as he lightly touched his son\u2019s shoulder. Joe\u2019s skin felt hot to the touch. Ben laid the back of his hand gently against Joe\u2019s cheek and was alarmed at the heat he felt. Joe was burning with fever. Shaking his son gently, Ben tried again. \u201cJoe? Can you hear me?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou shouldn\u2019t be out of bed!\u201d cried a voice from behind Ben.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spinning around, Ben saw a priest in a long brown robe entering the room. The cleric was carrying a tray with a coffee pot and two cops. \u201cMy son\u2026\u201d Ben started.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIs a very sick boy,\u201d finished the priest as he put the tray down on a small table at the foot of Joe\u2019s bed. \u201cScorpion bite, is it not?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYes,\u201d answered Ben. \u201cI tried to get the poison out but I didn\u2019t have a knife to open the wound.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn one so young and strong, a scorpion\u2019s sting usually is not serious. But for a man already weak from heat and lack of water, such a sting can be dangerous,\u201d acknowledged the priest. \u201cThe fact that the arm also is infected just complicates things.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ben looked at his son with growing concern.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m Father Sebastian,\u201d said the priest as he approached Ben.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBen Cartwright,\u201d responded Ben. \u201cThis is my son, Joseph.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat were you doing walking in the desert without any water?\u201d asked Father Sebastian curiously.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe were bringing some horses home when a gang of outlaws stopped us,\u201d explained Ben. \u201cThey took the horses and then left us to die in the desert.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWas the leader a big man with a half-moon scar under his eye?\u201d asked the priest almost pensively.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYes,\u201d Ben replied, a bit surprised. \u201cHow did you know?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThat was Quantro Jones. He\u2019s well-known in this part of the country. His mother was an Apache; his father, a white man. He\u2019s a vicious outlaw. Even the Apache are wary of him,\u201d Father Sebastian answered.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHow did we get here?\u201d asked Ben.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSome of my Apaches found you and brought you in,\u201d replied Father Sebastian.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYour Apaches?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Father Sebastian smiled. \u201cI\u2019ve been preaching the gospel in this region for about seven years. I\u2019ve made some converts. I suppose I think of those who have joined my faith as MY Apaches.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suddenly, Ben became light-headed and started to reel a bit. Father Sebastian gripped his arm and led Ben back to his bed. \u201cSit down,\u201d the priest suggested. \u201cI\u2019ll get you some coffee.\u201d The cleric helped Ben to sit on the bed and then walked back to the table near Joe\u2019s bed. Pouring a cup of coffee from the pot, the priest brought it over to Ben. \u201cNow drink this,\u201d Father Sebastian ordered. \u201cIt has lots of sugar in it. The coffee and sugar will make you feel better.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAre you a doctor?\u201d asked Ben as he slowly sipped the coffee. It was warm, not hot.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNo,\u201d admitted Father Sebastian. \u201cBut I\u2019ve had some medical training. My order believes if you can heal the body, you can reach the soul. I\u2019ve also picked up some interesting things from some Apache medicine men along the way. The poultice I put on your son\u2019s arm is an old Apache remedy for a scorpion sting. I\u2019ve seen it work.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Continuing to sip the coffee, Ben tried to clear his head. He watched as Father Sebastian crossed the room to the table with the coffee and poured a second cup. The priest went to Joe\u2019s bed and gently lifted the young man\u2019s head from the pillow. Father Sebastian put the cup to Joe\u2019s lips and forced a small amount of liquid into Joe\u2019s mouth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIs my son going to be all right?\u201d asked Ben anxiously.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI don\u2019t know,\u201d Father Sebastian answered as he continued to force Joe to drink. \u201cIt\u2019s in God\u2019s hands.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ben finished his coffee. He felt so tired; his eyelids were starting to droop as he placed the cup on the floor. Father Sebastian glanced toward Ben as he gently laid Joe\u2019s head back on his pillow. \u201cWhy don\u2019t you get some rest?\u201d suggested the priest. \u201cYou can use it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNo,\u201d replied Ben, shaking his head. \u201cI\u2019ve got to look after Joe.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019ll look after him,\u201d Father Sebastian assured Ben. \u201cYou won\u2019t do your son any good if you fall asleep at his beside.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou\u2019re right about that,\u201d admitted Ben reluctantly. He took a deep breath. \u201cYou\u2019ll wake me if\u2026if there\u2019s any change?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019ll wake you,\u201d promised the priest. \u201cNow get some rest.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stretching out on the bed, Ben wanted to stay awake but he knew he couldn\u2019t. Fatigue overwhelmed him as he closed his eyes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Ben woke again, he realized it was still night. The room was dark except for the light from a small lamp on the wall. Ben turned to look at Joe. His son lay on the other bed in the same position as Ben had seen him earlier. He also could see Father Sebastian sitting in a chair next to Joe\u2019s bed. The priest was fingering his rosary beds, his lips moving in silent prayer. Ben tried to get up, but he couldn\u2019t find the strength. He sank back in the bed and sleep overwhelmed him once more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">**********<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A hand gently shook Ben awake. As he opened his eyes to the light of morning, Ben realized Father Sebastian was shaking him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMr. Cartwright,\u201d said the priest. \u201cMr. Cartwright, your son is asking for you.\u201d Springing from the bed, Ben rushed to Joe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the bed on the far side of the room, Joe watched his father approach. \u201cPa, are you all right?\u201d he asked is a soft voice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m fine,\u201d Ben assured his son in a soothing tone. \u201cHow are you feeling?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA little rocky,\u201d Joe admitted, his voice barely louder than a whisper. \u201cMy arm\u2019s pretty sore.\u201d He studied his father for a moment. \u201cAre you sure you\u2019re all right?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDon\u2019t worry about me,\u201d replied Ben. \u201cI\u2019m just fine.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sighing with relief, Joe closed his eyes for a moment, then slowly opened them. \u201cWhere are we?\u201d he asked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou\u2019re at my mission,\u201d answered Father Sebastian, approaching the bed from behind Ben.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis is Father Sebastian,\u201d Ben explained. \u201cHe\u2019s been taking care of us.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHow did we get here?\u201d Joe asked, his voice sounding weaker. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath. His body seemed to sag and his eyes struggled to open again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHe should rest,\u201d Father Sebastian advised quietly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nodding, Ben turned to Joe. \u201cI\u2019ll tell you all about it later, Joe. Right now, you need some rest. Go to sleep.\u201d Ben watched as Joe closed his eyes fully and drifted off to sleep. He placed his hand on Joe\u2019s forehead for a minute, and then glanced back at the priest. \u201cHis fever is down.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYes, and his pulse is steadier,\u201d acknowledge Father Sebastian.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIs he going to be all right?\u201d asked Ben.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smiling, the priest shrugged a bit. \u201cWell, it will take a few days to be sure, but I think his chances are very good.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Turning back to Joe, Ben stroked his son\u2019s head a few times, then looked at the priest. \u201cThank you,\u201d he said softly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m glad I could help,\u201d replied Father Sebastian. \u201cNow, I must say Mass and you must get some more rest. I\u2019ll be back in a little while with some broth for both you and your son.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m feeling much better,\u201d Ben insisted as he lowered himself into the chair next to Joe\u2019s bed. \u201cI\u2019ll sit here awhile.\u201d The priest frowned at Ben for a moment, then nodded and turned to leave. \u201cFather,\u201d Ben called after the priest, \u201cwhen you say Mass, say thank you for me, will you?\u201d Smiling, Father Sebastian nodded and left the room.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">**********<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joe\u2019s condition improved slowly but steadily over the next few days, although his fever hung on stubbornly. Ben stayed with Joe, leaving his son\u2019s side only to eat and get a little sleep. Father Sebastian checked regularly on his patient, changing the bandage and dosing Joe with medicine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the priest walked into the room on the third afternoon, Ben was sitting by Joe\u2019s bed as usual, watching his son sleep.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHow is our patient doing?\u201d asked Father Sebastian softly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHe seems to be resting easy,\u201d Ben replied. \u201cBut he seems so weak. All he wants to do is sleep.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s the fever,\u201d explained the cleric. \u201cThe fever is a sign that his body is fighting off the last of the poison and infection, but it also saps the strength. It should be gone by tomorrow or the next day. Then he\u2019ll start getting stronger. He\u2019s young and healthy; it won\u2019t take long for him to get back on his feet.\u201d The priest peered at Ben. \u201cAnd how are you?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Waving his hand in dismissal, Ben answered, \u201cI\u2019m fine.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI don\u2019t believe that,\u201d declared Father Sebastian. \u201cI\u2019ve seen happier men than you seem to be.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWell, if you want to know the truth, I\u2019m worried,\u201d Ben admitted, smiling wryly. \u201cI\u2019m worried about my sons \u2013 ALL my sons.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBut why?\u201d asked Father Sebastian with a puzzled expression. \u201cJoe is improving and out of danger. And you said your older sons would be at Fort Hitchcock. They\u2019ll be perfectly safe at an army post.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m a father and worrying is one of the things that fathers do best,\u201d explained Ben. \u201cI\u2019m worried that Joe will take a turn for the worse. And I\u2019m worried about Adam and Hoss. We\u2019re two days overdue at the Fort. They must be frantic by now. There\u2019s no telling what they\u2019ll do. I wish there was a way to send a message to them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Father Sebastian shook his head with regret. \u201cI have only a mule to ride, and while he would get you to the Fort, it would take you at least two days to get there. I know you don\u2019t want to leave Joe for that length of time and I can\u2019t leave the mission for that long. We can hardly ask one of my Apaches to take a message to an army post.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI know, I know,\u201d acknowledge Ben, nodding slowly. \u201cI just hate the thought of what Adam and Hoss must be going through, what they must be thinking.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019ll pray for guidance,\u201d offered the priest. \u201cAnd I\u2019ll pray for all your sons. Maybe the Good Lord will bring us an answer.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThank you,\u201d Ben responded. \u201cYou\u2019ve done so much for Joe and me. I don\u2019t know how I can ever repay you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m a priest and helping people is one of the things priests do best,\u201d said Father Sebastian with a grin. \u201cI\u2019m just doing my job.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAnd you\u2019re very good at it,\u201d Ben declared with a smile.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Looking embarrassed, Father Sebastian tried to change the subject. \u201cWhen Joe wakes up, you give another dose of that medicine. I\u2019ll be back in a little while with some more broth for him.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the cleric left the room, Ben turned back to watch his sleeping son. He decided a few prayers of his own wouldn\u2019t hurt. Silently, Ben asked God to protect all his sons, and while he was at it, he added a thank you for sending Father Sebastian to help. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">**********<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On their fourth day at the mission, Joe finally woke without a fever and soon started complaining about having to stay in bed. Ben smiled as his son\u2019s complains, knowing it was the surest sign that Joe was feeling better. When Father Sebastian checked on Joe later in the morning, he also smiled at the young man\u2019s grumbling. The priest promised Joe that he could get out of bed for dinner if he rested the remainder of the day. Joe protested the restriction but everyone in the room knew it was just talk. Joe\u2019s pale face and tired eyes belied his protests. As the two older me left the room, Joe was already curled up under the blanker on his bed and beginning to doze off.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sitting at a small table in a room that was a combination of kitchen and dining room, Ben and Father Sebastian were discussing what to do next. Their conversation was interrupted by the sound of horses and men\u2019s voices from outside the building. Ben and the priest hurried to the door and looked out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A troop of cavalry was approaching the mission. In the lead was a big man, not in uniform but wearing a familiar tall white hat. Close behind the large man was another rider dressed in black. Ben smiled at the sight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the trooped stopped in front of the mission, the big man leapt from his horse, shouting, \u201cPa!\u201d The second man just sat on his horse and grinned. Ben started to raise his hand in greeting, but found his arms pinned as Hoss\u2019 massive hands grasped his shoulders. \u201cPa!\u201d Hoss cried again, his eyes studying his father. \u201cAre you all right? Where\u2019s Joe? What happened to you?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Laughing, Ben patted Hoss on the arm. \u201cSlow down, slow down,\u201d he told his middle son. \u201cI\u2019m fine. Joe and I were robbed by a band of outlaws a couple of miles from here. Some of Father Sebastian\u2019s Apaches found us and brought us here.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dismounting, Adam walked up to his father and slapped Ben lightly on the back. \u201cI told Hoss that you could take care of yourself,\u201d Adam declared.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThank you for your confidence,\u201d Ben replied with a smile. \u201cIt\u2019s good to see both of you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat about Joe?\u201d Hoss asked. \u201cWhere is he?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Immediately Ben\u2019s face sobered. \u201cHe was a pretty sick boy for awhile. He was stung by a scorpion and the wound got infected. Luckily, Father Sebastian was able to pull him through. He\u2019s still not a hundred percent, but he\u2019s going to be all right,\u201d Ben explained. He tilted his head a bit and looked at his sons. \u201cHow did you two manage to find us?\u201d he asked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen you and Joe didn\u2019t show up at the fort, we got worried,\u201d answered Hoss. \u201cWe finally persuaded the colonel to send out a patrol to look for you. Lieutenant Johnson and his men here have been riding with us for the past few days.\u201d He nodded toward the young officer sitting on a nearby horse. \u201cWhen we couldn\u2019t find any sign of you and Joe, the lieutenant suggested we try the mission,\u201d Hoss continued. \u201cHe thought the priest here might know something.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m sorry you were worried,\u201d Ben stated with genuine regret. \u201cI couldn\u2019t leave Joe and there was no way to send word to you.\u201d He looked over at the lieutenant and added, \u201cI\u2019m sorry you and your men had to make such a long ride. Thank you for your efforts.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou\u2019re welcome,\u201d the officer answered with a smile. \u201cBut there\u2019s no need to apologize. We were going to patrol this area anyway.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m Father Sebastian,\u201d announced the priest, stepping forward. \u201cWelcome to my mission.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFather, I\u2019m please to meet you,\u201d responded the young officer. \u201cWe\u2019ve heard of your good work here.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLieutenant, you and your men are welcome to stay here for awhile,\u201d offered Father Sebastian. \u201cWe have plenty of water. I\u2019m afraid the food is a little limited, but I\u2019ll be happy to share what I have.\u201d Seeing Johnson hesitate, the priest added, \u201cThe Apaches won\u2019t bother you here. They know all are welcome at my mission.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThank you,\u201d Johnson replied. \u201cWe appreciate the offer. We have plenty of rations but could use the water and the rest.\u201d He gave an order to his men to dismount.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPa, where\u2019s Joe?\u201d demanded Hoss. \u201cI\u2019d like to see him.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cInside,\u201d answered Ben. \u201cHe\u2019s sleeping,\u201d Turning, Ben walked into the mission with Adam and Hoss following close behind. He led his older sons through the large room to a door on far wall, and then quietly opened the door.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asleep on the bed, Joe looked less than well. His arm was still heavily bandaged and his face appeared thin and pale.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frowning, Hoss looked at his father. \u201cAre you sure he\u2019s going to be all right?\u201d the big man asked with concern. Adam\u2019s face reflected Hoss\u2019 worry as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before Ben could answer, Joe stirred and the bed and opened his eyes. He looked up in surprise at the men standing in the doorway. \u201cAdam! Hoss! What are you doing here?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLooking for you, little brother,\u201d Hoss answered with a smile. \u201cYou and Pa seemed to have gotten lost on the way to the fort. How are you feeling?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m fine,\u201d said Joe, sitting up. He winced a bit and closed his eyes for a minute as if trying to gather his strength. \u201cI\u2019m fine,\u201d he repeated firmly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCan\u2019t you every just make a trip straight home?\u201d joked Adam, trying to hide the concern he felt. \u201cDo you always have to stop and see the sights?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s such a lovely country,\u201d answered Joe, grinning. \u201cFull of outlaws, scorpions and Apaches. I just couldn\u2019t help myself.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Walking over to the bed, Ben put his hand on Joe\u2019s shoulder. \u201cYou need to rest,\u201d Ben insisted in a stern voice. \u201cRemember what Father Sebastian said. You have to rest for the remainder of the day. If you feel well enough later, you can join us for dinner.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joe frowned but didn\u2019t protest. The truth was he still felt very weak and a few more hours of sleep sounded pretty good. He slid back under the covers as his father and brothers left the room.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">**********<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sun was beginning to set as Father Sebastian starting laying plates on the table for dinner. He looked up when he heard the door open, and smiled as Hoss, Adam and Lt. Johnson entered the room.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWelcome, gentlemen!\u201d the priest greeted his guests heartily. The three men smiled a greeting in return. \u201cDinner will be ready shortly,\u201d continued Father Sebastian. \u201cBen is helping Joe get dressed. Please, sit down.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAre you sure Joe\u2019s going to be all right?\u201d asked Hoss with concern as head seated himself at the table.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOh yes,\u201d replied Father Sebastian. \u201cHe\u2019ll need to rest for a week or so, but he will be good as new shortly.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hoss grinned in relief and started to say something when he heard a door open behind him. He turned to see Joe and Ben emerge from the bedroom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fully dressed, with his bandaged arm in a sling, Joe walked slowly toward the table. Ben followed close behind, his hand only a few inches from Joe\u2019s elbow, ready to catch Joe\u2019s arm if his son stumbled.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWell, you\u2019re looking better, Joe,\u201d Adam said a little too enthusiastically. In truth, he was still concerned about how pale and shaky his younger brother looked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m feeling just great,\u201d declared Joe in a voice that trembled a bit. As he neared the table, Joe grabbed the back of an empty chair and hung on for a few seconds, as if to steady his balance. Then he lowered himself slowly into the chair. Ben watched anxiously as son settled himself, then moved to an empty chair and sat down.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carrying a large pot, Father Sebastian walked to the table. \u201cFresh rabbit stew,\u201d he announced with pride, \u201ccooked with fresh vegetables and seasoned with my own blend of spices. Enjoy, gentlemen!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the priest dished out the stew, Ben introduced Joe to Lt. Johnson. He also watched from the corner of his eye as the plate of steaming food was set in front of his youngest son. But Joe began eating steadily, and the rest of the men followed suit. Talk was limited as each one was intent on filling themselves with the delicious food.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Father Sebastian began to clear the table after the dinner, Lt. Johnson turned to Ben. \u201cI didn\u2019t want to bring this up while we were eating, but I would like to hear more details about what happened to you and your son.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nodding, Ben began telling the story of the journey across the desert. Hoss\u2019 face grew dark, his anger at the outlaws growing by the minute. Adam\u2019s face took on a grim look also. Lt. Johnson merely listened.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Ben was finished, the young officer sat thinking for a minute. \u201cWe have heard stories about this outlaw Quantro Jones for a long time,\u201d Johnson admitted, \u201cbut this is the first time we have concrete evidence against him. Most of the time, his victims were found dead.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOr they were Apaches, which means they wouldn\u2019t be listened to in court,\u201d added Father Sebastian as he returned to the table. The lieutenant nodded in agreement, reddening a bit at the priest\u2019s implied rebuke.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf I could figure out where his camp is, I could lead the patrol on a raid,\u201d observed Johnson. \u201cWe could rid this territory of at least one menace.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI could get directions to the camp for you,\u201d Father Sebastian offered in a quiet voice. When the officer looked at him in surprise, the priest continued. \u201cThe Apaches dislike Quantro Jones also. I\u2019m sure they know where his camp is. They would tell me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFather, you really are amazing,\u201d Johnson said smiling. \u201cPlease, get directions or a map or something. I\u2019ll lead the patrol out as soon as we have a definite location.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLieutenant, I\u2019m going with you,\u201d Ben announced in a firm voice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSo am I,\u201d added Hoss.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAnd me,\u201d chimed in Adam.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNo,\u201d the officer replied, shaking his head. \u201cThis is an Army action. I can\u2019t be responsible for any civilians.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLieutenant, you have ten men, the same as we saw with Jones,\u201d Ben countered. \u201cEven with the element of surprise, you need all the help you can get.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBut\u2026\u201d Johnson started to protest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLieutenant, we\u2019re going with you,\u201d interrupted Ben in a voice that implied further arguments would be useless.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWell, I guess a few extra guns wouldn\u2019t hurt,\u201d admitted the lieutenant reluctantly. \u201cWe brought along some extra horses, and you can use one of those, Mr. Cartwright. And thanks. I\u2019m happy to have you and your sons with us.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSave one of those horses for me,\u201d declared Joe. \u201cI\u2019m going too.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Father Sebastian looked at Joe with surprise, then turned toward Ben. The priest shook his head.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cJoe,\u201d Ben said in a quiet voice, \u201cyou aren\u2019t in any shape to ride and you won\u2019t be for awhile. You stay here and take care of yourself until we get back.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNo, I\u2019m going,\u201d insisted Joe stubbornly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cJoe, you know you\u2019re not well enough to make a hard ride like we\u2019re going to have to make,\u201d replied Ben. \u201cYou\u2019ll slow us down and maybe get someone hurt. You aren\u2019t going. You WILL stay here.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Joe started to protest, Ben raised his hand. \u201cNo argument,\u201d he stated firmly. \u201cYou\u2019re staying here.\u201d Joe sat back in his chair, grunting softly in disgust.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019ll try to manage without you, Joe,\u201d commented Hoss with a grin. \u201cI think maybe we can take those outlaws without your help.\u201d The rest of the men at the table laughed as Joe snorted in disbelief.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">**********<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The next morning found the mission a hive of activity. Lt. Johnson was organizing his patrol as Adam filled canteens. Hoss was checking the saddle girth on his horse as well as on Adam\u2019s and Ben\u2019s, while Father Sebastian reviewed a map with Ben. The priest\u2019s early morning visit to the Apache camp had produced a clear map to Quantro Jones\u2019 hide-out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the commotion swirled around in the yard, Joe stood in the doorway of the mission, watching with a dour expression. His heavily bandaged arm rested in a sling, and dark circles rimmed his eyes. Despite the obvious evidence that he was still recovering, Joe itched to ride with the patrol.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When their assigned tasks were completed, Adam and Hoss walked over to the doorway. \u201cYou take care of yourself, Joe,\u201d Hoss advised, clapping his younger brother gently on the shoulder.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDon\u2019t worry about me,\u201d answered Joe. \u201cYou just remember to duck when the shooting starts, since I won\u2019t be there to take care of you.\u201d Chuckling, Hoss slapped Joe lightly on the shoulder again, and then turn to walk back to his horse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTry to stay out of trouble while we\u2019re gone, Joe,\u201d Adam suggested wryly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019ve got one arm in a sling and I\u2019m staying at a mission,\u201d replied Joe. \u201cI hardly think there\u2019s much opportunity to get into trouble.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYes, but if there\u2019s any chance at all, you\u2019ll find it,\u201d Adam noted, grinning. He patted Joe lightly on the back and then left to find his horse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Watching the exchange between his sons, Ben smiled. He knew the seemingly light-hearted conversation was the way his boys expressed their concern for one another. Turning to Father Sebastian, Ben stuck out his hand. \u201cThank you again for your help, Father. Keep an eye on Joe for me.\u201d The priest smiled and nodded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Ben turned to walk away, Father Sebastian suddenly grabbed the older man\u2019s arm. \u201cBen,\u201d the priest said in a serious voice, \u201cplease remember your mission is to bring some outlaws to justice. There\u2019s a big difference between vengeance and justice. \u2018The Lord sayth vengeance is mine\u2019.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI know, Father,\u201d Ben replied. \u201cAnd I\u2019ll remember. Thanks.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ben walked over to the doorway where Joe was standing. His youngest son looked up hopefully. \u201cDid you change your mind? Can I go?\u201d asked Joe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNo,\u201d answered Ben, shaking his head. \u201cThe only place you\u2019re going is back to bed.\u201d As Joe sighed, Ben patted him lightly on the shoulder. \u201cYou take care of yourself. We\u2019ll see you in about a week.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With an anxious expression on his face, Joe watched as his father walked to a horse and mounted. Lt. Johnson barked an order and the patrol started to ride off, with Ben, Adam, and Hoss trailing the soldiers. Ben turned to wave at Joe as he rode forward, and Joe waved back.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Standing in the doorway, Joe watched the figures ride away. He stood watching even as the men disappeared into the distance. His eyes ached as he stared at the rapidly dwindling cloud of dust that was the only evidence of the patrol\u2019s passage. Joe was only dimly aware of someone standing next to him. He felt a hand on his shoulder and turned to see Father Sebastian was looking at him with an understanding expression.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCome, it\u2019s time to change your bandage,\u201d the priest advised gently. Joe swallowed hard and nodded. He turned back to take one last look at the now empty horizon, then entered the mission.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">**********<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The days passed slowly for Joe as he waited anxiously for the return of the patrol. He spent hours sitting on a chair in front of the mission, staring into the hills. He listened for gunfire that he knew wouldn\u2019t be able to hear, and searched the horizon for tiny specks of returning riders. Joe watched until his tired eyes betrayed him and closed in sleep. Father Sebastian kept watch also, only he watched the young man so full of worry and concern. He let Joe sleep in the sun until the day grew too warm. Then he would hustle Joe into the coolness of the mission, and try to distract the young man with games of checkers or long discussions over meals. Joe appreciated the priest\u2019s efforts and tried to participate in the game or talk, but his attention was never fully on the matter at hand. Always, his ears were straining for the sound of hoofbeats.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Almost a week passed and Joe was growing more anxious with each day. Sitting at the table in the mission during one afternoon, Joe flexed his hand as he stared at the checkerboard in front of him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAh, you\u2019re getting some muscle tone back in your hand,\u201d declared Father Sebastian with a smile as he noticed Joe\u2019s movement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYeah,\u201d agreed Joe. \u201cI figure I can get rid of the sling in a day or two.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPerhaps,\u201d replied the priest in a non-committal tone. \u201cIt\u2019s your move.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suddenly, Joe stood, almost knocking over the table with his abrupt action. The sound he had been waiting for drifted faintly into the mission \u2013 the sound of a horse. But Joe frowned as he listened. He had expected to hear several horses riding slowly. This was the sound of one horse and the animal was running hard. Joe walked quickly to the door and pulled it open.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Joe started out of the mission, he almost ran into a man \u2013 a big man with a half-moon scar under his eye. Quantro Jones was dirty, sweaty, and had a wild look his eyes. More importantly, the outlaw had a pistol and it was pointed at Joe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGet inside,\u201d Jones ordered with a snarl. He gestured with the gun, and Joe had no doubt the man would use the weapon. Moving slowly, Joe backed into the mission.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cJoe, what is it?\u201d asked Father Sebastian as he saw the young man moving backwards into the room. Before Joe could answer, Jones pushed the young Cartwright to the floor and walked in.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI need supplies, water, and a fresh horse,\u201d Jones announced without preamble. \u201cAnd I need them now. There\u2019s an army patrol on my heels.\u201d The outlaw glanced down at Joe, still sprawled on the floor, and quickly dismissed the unarmed man with his arm in a sling as no threat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou\u2019re welcome to any food and water we have,\u201d replied Father Sebastian calmly. \u201cBut I\u2019m afraid all I have is a mule. I don\u2019t have any horses.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frowning, Jones pointed his gun at the priest. \u201cDon\u2019t mess with me,\u201d he growled. \u201cI\u2019m not above shooting a priest.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI assure you I\u2019m telling the truth,\u201d insisted Father Sebastian, still showing no trace of fear. \u201cYou\u2019re welcome to anything we have, but I can\u2019t give you what we don\u2019t have.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chewing on his lip, Jones\u2019 attention was focused on the robed figure in front of him. He didn\u2019t notice Joe slipping his arm from his sling, or see the young man edging closer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019ll take whatever you have,\u201d Jones decided, still ignoring Joe. Then a crafty expression came over the outlaw\u2019s face. \u201cI\u2019ll bet you have some nice pieces here, some gold crosses and things. I\u2019ll just help myself to them also.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m afraid you\u2019ll be disappointed on that account also,\u201d replied Father Sebastian. \u201cPlease, take all the food and water you wish, and the mule if you want it. Take anything you want. Just leave us in peace.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou\u2019re awfully accommodating,\u201d Jones observed, looking at the priest with suspicion. \u201cMaybe you\u2019ve got some reason to keep me here for awhile, like maybe some Apache braves coming to help you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI assure you, you are perfectly safe here at the mission,\u201d Father Sebastian informed the outlaw. \u201cNo one will harm you here.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf I\u2019m safe here, then I really don\u2019t need you, do I?\u201d snarled Jones, aiming his gun at the priest\u2019s chest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Launching himself across the small space that separated him from Jones, Joe knocked the outlaw to the floor. The gun dropped from Jones\u2019 hand as his body slammed into the wooden floor. Joe threw a punch at the outlaw\u2019s jaw, but the blow glanced off the side of Jones\u2019 face. The bandit threw a punch back, hitting Joe in the chest and knocking the young Cartwright onto his back. Joe scrambled to his feet and jabbed at Jones\u2019 mid-section, a blow that forced the outlaw to retreat a step.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seeing the bandage on Joe\u2019s arm, Jones chopped the side of his hand onto Joe\u2019s injured limb, a hard smash that caused Joe to yell in pain and grab at his arm. Before Joe could recover, Jones hit him again in the jaw, knocking Joe once more to the floor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Looking around quickly, Jones spotted his pistol near his feet. He snatched it up from the floor, aimed the gun at Joe, and cocked it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lying on the ground, cradling his arm, Joe stared at the gun. He was sure that pistol and Quantro Joes were going to be the last thing he saw on this earth. He swallowed hard and braced himself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But a brown-robed figure suddenly appeared behind Jones, and Joe watched in astonishment as Father Sebastian lifted his arms high into the air. A loud twang echoed around the room as the priest smashed a frying pan onto the top of Quantro Jones\u2019 head. The outlaw crumpled instantly, the gun falling from his slack hand before Jones could pull the trigger. Joe let out a sigh of relief and allowed his body to sag.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cJoe, are you all right?\u201d Father Sebastian asked anxiously as stepped over the fallen outlaw.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI am now,\u201d admitted Joe, giving the priest a shaky grin. \u201cBut for a minute there, I thought I was going to join those angels in heaven you\u2019re always talking about.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou shouldn\u2019t have jumped him like that,\u201d the priest chided with a frown. \u201cI was sure I could talk him out of any violence.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAnd I was sure he was going to shoot you,\u201d countered Joe. \u201cOne of us was wrong. I didn\u2019t want it to be you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Giving Joe a small smile, Father Sebastian nodded. \u201cPerhaps you\u2019re right.\u201d The priest looked around. \u201cLet\u2019s find some rope to tie him up, and then I\u2019ll take a look at your arm.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">**********<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At dusk, the sound that Joe was awaiting finally wafted through the desert air. The creaking of saddles mixed with the slow hoofbeats of numerous horses greeted Joe as he emerged from the mission. Joe counted carefully, noting that there eighteen riders, along with a number of extra horses. Several of the riders were not in uniform.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joe\u2019s eyes strained against the failing light as he studies the riders in civilian clothes. His face broke into a smile when he saw the three faces he was desperately searching for.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPa! Adam! Hoss!\u201d Joe shouted, waving as he rushed into the yard in front of the mission. Three riders broke away from the patrol and rode quickly toward him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cJoe,\u201d said Ben as he halted his horse and dismounted. \u201cGood to see you, boy. How are you feeling?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m fine,\u201d Joe answered, his eyes raking his father\u2019s form. \u201cHow are you?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAll in one piece,\u201d announced Adam as he dismounted and walked toward Joe. \u201cNot even a scratch.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYeah, we took them by surprise,\u201d added Hoss, hurrying over to join the rest of his family. \u201cA couple of them put up a fight, but most of them just gave up when they saw we had them surrounded.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cQuantro Jones managed to get away, though,\u201d Ben admitted, shaking his head in regret. \u201cHe pushed two of his men into our line of fire and ran. By the time we had the rest of them rounded up, Jones was long gone.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDon\u2019t worry about that,\u201d declared Joe with a wide grin on his face. \u201cJones is tied up inside the mission.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cInside the mission!\u201d exclaimed Ben in an astonished voice. \u201cHow did that happen?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWell, let\u2019s just say Father Sebastian wields a mean frying pan,\u201d Joe answered. \u201cAnd I don\u2019t mean on the stove.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">**********<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the sun rose the next morning, the patrol was mounted in a circle around a group of sullen prisoners sitting on horses. Quantro Jones was in the middle, hands tied tightly to his saddle horn. The soldiers pointed rifles and guns at the outlaws, and their faces showed they would not hesitate to shoot if any of the bandits made a threatening move.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFather, we\u2019re heading out,\u201d announced Lt. Johnson, standing next to his horse and offering his hand to Father Sebastian. \u201cThank you for all your help.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m pleased I could be of some small service,\u201d replied the priest modestly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m pretty sure there\u2019s some kind of reward to Jones and his men,\u201d added the lieutenant. \u201cWe\u2019ve all agreed that you should get the money.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMoney has little use out here,\u201d Father Sebastian said. \u201cBlankets, food, and medicine would be of more help. And perhaps a horse.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThen that\u2019s what you\u2019ll get,\u201d agreed Johnson. \u201cI\u2019ll deliver them myself.\u201d He turned to Ben and his sons, who were standing nearby. \u201cMr. Cartwright, I appreciate your help. If you and your sons ever want to enlist, I\u2019ll be glad to give you a recommendation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThank you, Lieutenant,\u201d replied Ben. \u201cBut the only patrolling we\u2019ll be doing is on the south range of our ranch.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smiling, Lt. Johnson gave a small salute and then mounted his horse. He shouted an order and watched as his men started moving the prisoners cross the sandy soil. Johnson turned and gave a brief wave to the men behind him, then rode up to join his men.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019ll be leaving too, Father,\u201d Ben told the priest. \u201cWe have our stallions back, and with the food and water you\u2019ve given us, we have ample supplies to get home.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI will miss you,\u201d admitted Father Sebastian a bit sadly. \u201cThe mission will seem unusually empty for awhile.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI don\u2019t know the words to say thank you enough,\u201d Ben continued. \u201cYou save my life, and saved Joe twice.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs I said, it\u2019s all part of the job,\u201d replied the priest with a shrug.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSaving our little brother can be a full-time job,\u201d commented Adam dryly. \u201cWe\u2019d better leave so you have some time to do your other work.\u201d Joe scowled at Adam as the other men laughed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThank you,\u201d reiterated Ben as he shook the priest\u2019s hands. His words, though simple, were said with a volume of emotion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Father Sebastian shook hands with Adam and Hoss, then stopped in front of Joe. \u201cRemember what I said,\u201d the priest instructed the youngest Cartwright. \u201cChange that bandage every day and don\u2019t overdo things. You still need to take it easy for awhile.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019ll remember,\u201d Joe assured the cleric. His eyes misted a bit. \u201cI\u2019ll remember everything. Thank you for watching out for me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think perhaps God was the one who was watching,\u201d Father Sebastian said with a smile. \u201cThey say God watches over children and fools.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAnd which category do I fall into?\u201d asked Joe, grinning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA little of both perhaps,\u201d answered the priest. \u201cBut mostly, into the category of a good man with a brave heart.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThank you,\u201d Joe murmured, his voice choked with emotion. He gave Father Sebastian a quick hug, then turned to mount a horse. Joe hoped his father and brothers didn\u2019t see him wiping the tear from his eye.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWell, little brother, let\u2019s get you home before you cause any more trouble,\u201d declared Hoss as he watched Joe climb up onto the horse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMe?\u201d Joe protested. \u201cI wasn\u2019t the one who wanted to buy those horses and head out across the desert. And all I was doing was playing checkers when Jones showed up.
