It is located in an area of the city inhabited almost entirely by the Irish.\u00a0 The room is sparsely furnished, and the bed is hard, but it\u2019s not any worse than sleeping on the ground under the stars with a saddle for a pillow.\u00a0 The proprietress, Mrs. O\u2019Connell, keeps a very clean house and cooks dinner for the residents each night.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s not ideal, especially for you, my darling, but for now, it will do.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Michael has asked me to become a partner in his firm, and I have enthusiastically accepted his offer.\u00a0 There are several factories in the city that have fallen into disrepair, and I am currently tasked with redesigning and renovating these old buildings. \u00a0It is rewarding to finally use my education in a profession to which I am devoted.\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Although I am busy, I think of you often, my love, especially in the morning.\u00a0 I miss waking up with you next to me, feeling your warmth and smelling your sweet perfume.\u00a0 I hope to find a place for us to live immediately so you can join me as soon as possible.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>You have my address now, so please write as soon as you can. especially the library, which I hear is exceptional.\u00a0 Unfortunately, reading is a luxury now, as most of my time is spent at the office.\u00a0 I barely have time for a meal and a good night\u2019s sleep.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>Please take good care of yourself, my love.\u00a0 You are a strong woman, and I know you will suffer this separation bravely.\u00a0 We will be reunited before long, my darling wife. \u00a0Thank you for your undying love and support.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>I await your next letter. \u00a0Merry Christmas, my darling. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>Your Devoted Husband,<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>Adam Cartwright<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>January 10th, 1870<\/p>\n<p>Ponderosa Ranch, Nevada<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>My Dear Husband,<\/p>\n<p>It is a beautiful winter night here at our house.\u00a0 It is early evening, and the sun is beginning to set.\u00a0 The pine trees are making the whispering sound they make when the breeze blows through the needles \u2013 do you remember the sound, my love?<\/p>\n<p>I am becoming accustomed to being alone, and it has provided me with new found independence.\u00a0 Having to fend for myself has made me appreciate you even more.<\/p>\n<p>Life on our ranch goes on without you, regardless of my misery.\u00a0 I planted pumpkin seeds at the end of summer and grew a few whoppers.\u00a0 Joe and Alice came by with little Benji, and he picked his favorite one to carve for Halloween.\u00a0 I also planted rows and rows of sunflowers, and our field is now a sea of yellow and orange.<\/p>\n<p>Thanksgiving dinner was a success \u2013 Hop Sing prepared his rosemary turkey with apple and raisin stuffing, and Alice made sweet potatoes.\u00a0 We had green beans from my garden \u2013 at least what I could rescue from a storm of ants!\u00a0 Poor Hoss, he suffered so while the aroma of the food cooking flooded the house. \u00a0\u00a0When Pa gave the blessing, he remembered you especially and asked God to bless you and watch over you in Boston.\u00a0 I saw he had tears in his eyes while he prayed.\u00a0 He misses you terribly, as we all do.<\/p>\n<p>The Christmas tree this year was more beautiful than any I could remember since coming to the Ponderosa.\u00a0 We gathered around and sang carols, and your father read the Christmas story from the Bible.\u00a0 I tried to put on a brave face, but I think the family could tell how much I was missing you.\u00a0 I have never been any good at hiding my feelings.<\/p>\n<p>It has been 7 months since you left, my love.\u00a0 I am trying to be patient, but I am so lonely without you.\u00a0 I read how busy you are, and I now realize the decision to leave me behind so that you could concentrate on your work was indeed a judicious one.<\/p>\n<p>Do you have any idea of when I can join you?\u00a0 I would be most happy to share your simple room just to be with you again.\u00a0 I don\u2019t need anything fancy, just your arms around me.\u00a0 Please, my love, when next you write, please send me some encouragement.<\/p>\n<p>Your Loving Wife,<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor Cartwright<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><em>March 8th, 1870<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Boston, Massachusetts<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>My Dear Wife,<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>I have also grown impatient for our reunion.\u00a0 After your last letter, I made it my priority to find us a home,\u00a0 and \u00a0I\u2019m overjoyed to have found a wonderful house in the best neighborhood in town. \u00a0It is not the type of house like you are familiar with.\u00a0 It is called a row house.\u00a0 Image a long, cobblestone street lined with 3 story brick buildings on both sides, one after another, all of which are connected to each other.\u00a0 Our new home will require extensive renovation, so it would be better if no one lives there during construction.\u00a0 I will be able to do most of the work myself, and, if needed, I can hire men from my neighborhood.\u00a0 I estimate it should be 6 months before it will be inhabitable. \u00a0Not as soon as I wished, my love, but at least there is now an end in sight to our separation. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>Michael has recently become engaged and has asked me to be the best man at his wedding.\u00a0 His fiance is the daughter of a prominent retired judge here in Boston.\u00a0 Because of Judge Dolan\u2019s introductions to the influential businessmen of this city, \u00a0our work assignments have doubled in the last few weeks.\u00a0 These men do business and socialize on a grand scale.\u00a0 Michael and I have been attending parties and balls, and we even share a box at the music hall.\u00a0 It seems we have a function to attend nearly every weekend.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>I could not be happier with my success here in Boston. I managed to kill two of those varmints, but I\u2019m sure the others will be back.\u00a0\u00a0 I am a dreadful shot, so I\u2019ve asked Joe to come by and show me how to handle a gun for my own wish you could have been here to see it \u2013 the men in their formal suits and the women in their finest clothes and jewelry.\u00a0\u00a0 I imaged what you would look like in one of the extravagant ball gowns, with your hair finely styled and diamonds around your neck.\u00a0 I surely would have been the envy of every man in attendance.\u00a0 The orchestra played waltz after waltz, and I danced until my feet were sore.\u00a0 A never-ending supply of champagne and expensive cigars rounded out the party.\u00a0 Hard to believe that 10 months ago I was a cowboy, and now I am a member of the Boston elite.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Everything seems to be coming together for me, Ellie.\u00a0 I am so happy to be here, working with Michael, and enjoying the finer things in life.\u00a0 I know that over, and after a day or two, he seemed to be back to normal.\u00a0 It was a worry, though.\u00a0 You know your Pa \u2013 he would never admit he needed help.<\/p>\n<p>Cochise came up lame a while ago, so Joe took Sport on round-up to keep him in shape.\u00a0 I have ridden him a few times, but he really needs a strong hand and a vigorous workout.\u00a0 I\u2019m afraid I have been spoiling him with a carrot here and there, and now he whinnies for a carrot every time I come out of the house.<\/p>\n<p>These months you have been away are passing so slowly.\u00a0 Some days my heart is drowning I guess I needed a few weeks to adjust to the news that my arrival in Boston will once again be delayed.\u00a0 I hope the weather improves and you are able to get back to work soon.<\/p>\n<p>Our holidays were quiet.\u00a0 Snow prevented us from attending church on Christmas morning, but Pa lit a roaring fire and we gathered around the tree for hot chocolate and some of Hop Sing\u2019s sugar doughnuts.\u00a0 Festive though it may have been, it felt empty here without you.\u00a0 Your father has been of great comfort to me during these months apart from you, and Alice and I have grown
