{"id":15489,"date":"2017-12-25T00:18:46","date_gmt":"2017-12-25T05:18:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bonanzabrand.info\/library\/?p=15489"},"modified":"2025-09-25T15:40:35","modified_gmt":"2025-09-25T19:40:35","slug":"christmas-wishes-by-bluewindfarm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bonanzabrand.info\/library\/?p=15489","title":{"rendered":"Christmas Wishes (by BluewindFarm)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18.6667px;\">This story was written for the 2017 Advent Calendar &#8211; Day 2<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Summary:\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Ben and Little Joe enjoy an evening during what might be one of the last winters Joe enjoys snuggling on his Pa&#8217;s lap.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Rating:\u00a0 G\u00a0 \u00a0815 words<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Christmas Wishes Series:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bonanzabrand.info\/library\/?p=15489\">Of Winters Past&#8230;<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bonanzabrand.info\/library\/?p=15489&amp;page=2\">Our Little Piece of Snow-Covered Heaven<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>\u201cthat\u00a0<strong>all the world<\/strong>\u00a0should be registered.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Of Winters Past&#8230;<br \/>\n~by BluewindFarm<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sitting on the raised porch, Ben Cartwright repositioned the blanket-wrapped bundle nestled snug on his lap as he looked out over the scenery of the night.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you warm enough son?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah Pa, I\u2019m warm,\u201d though his body gave a slight shiver.\u00a0 \u201cIt sure is pretty, all the snow falling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat it is, son.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is just like you and Mama.\u00a0 Do you still miss her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Taken aback by the unexpected question; it had been five years since his beloved Marie\u2019s tragic death. \u00a0\u201cYes, yes I do.\u00a0 I miss your mother as much as I miss Adam\u2019s and Hoss\u2019 mothers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Huddling closer and holding tight to keep the blankets closed, \u201cI remember when you and Mama would sit out here\u2026 she was wrapped in blankets and sitting on your lap, she\u2019d giggle a lot.\u201d Joe sniffled with puddling tears shining in his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Remembering their too few years together and Marie\u2019s insistence on being outside during the first snowfall of the season.\u00a0 \u201cIs that why you wanted to come out here tonight?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSort of\u2026\u00a0 I couldn\u2019t sleep, and Hop Sing always keeps some cocoa on the stove\u2026 and it\u2019s so close to Christmas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re missing her too.\u201d\u00a0 Looking to the sky and the fluttering flakes; he felt his son nodding his head.\u00a0 Earlier he\u2019d sensed a disquiet in his youngest son long before the boys headed upstairs to bed.\u00a0 It didn\u2019t take much to realize something was on the boy\u2019s mind when he didn\u2019t want to play a second round of checkers with Hoss.\u00a0 So, it was no surprise to him when two hours later Joe traipsed down the staircase, blankets trailing behind, cascading down the staircase like a waterfall. \u00a0\u201cYour mother loved to watch the snow falling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEspecially on Christmas Eve,\u201d Joe whispered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, especially on Christmas Eve.\u201d\u00a0 Hugging his son tighter, \u201cIt was something she never experienced before, having lived all her life in New Orleans. There was always something about a Christmas snow that transformed her, changed her to where she acted more like a little girl.\u201d\u00a0 Ben\u2019s eyes softened, \u201cI remember a snowball fight between your mother and Adam that first winter.\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMama surprised Adam didn\u2019t she.\u201d\u00a0 Joe took over the narrative he\u2019d heard told times before, recounting how his two brothers had an all-out battle against their father before Ben finally yielded to their superior forces.\u00a0 \u201cAdam stood from behind the water trough and Mama got him, dead center.\u201d\u00a0 Working an arm out of the blanket, Joe mimicked the throw, \u201cSPLOT!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Smiling at the memory.\u00a0 \u201cYes, though the temperature began dropping, they continued to toss their projectiles back and forth until neither could move, they were so sore from laughing so hard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you think it\u2019s snowing in Boston?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt might be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Working his arm back inside the warmth of the blankets, \u201cDo you think Adam remembers that snowball fight with Mama?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sure he does.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An angelic face looked up, \u201cPa, do you think me and Hoss could have a snowball fight with you tomorrow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ben mulled over the thought of the stacks of paperwork on his desk which needed attention.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSt. Nicholas wouldn\u2019t hold it against us this close to Christmas?\u00a0 He won\u2019t think we\u2019re bad boys, would he?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, I\u2019m sure he wouldn\u2019t.\u00a0 He\u2019ll still leave presents for you boys, if you two make sure all your chores are done; and it looks like it\u2019s going to snow enough.\u00a0 Sure, we can have a snowball fight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Little Joe\u2019s excitement passed and once again he quieted.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s peaceful out here.\u00a0 I know my Christmas wish\u2026.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Knowing this might be the last year this son would want to snuggle as they watched winter cover the yard, \u201cWhat do you wish, son?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy wish would be for <strong>all the world<\/strong> to know the love that I feel right now.\u00a0 The love of family, whether they\u2019re near like you and Hoss or far away like Adam, or up in Heaven like our mamas.\u00a0 Or even those we\u2019ve adopted as family, like Hop Sing\u2026. there\u2019s nothing like the love of family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Smiling at Little Joe\u2019s wish, \u201cI wish you the love of family forever and ever.\u00a0 Now come on, let\u2019s get you inside and in bed; if you and Hoss are to stand any chance of beating me\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jumping from his father\u2019s lap, \u201cHoss and me are an unbeatable team!\u201d\u00a0 A hand snaked from the blankets to take hold of his father\u2019s gloved hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sure you will be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope Hop Sing will have plenty of hot cocoa and Christmas cookies for afterwards.\u00a0 And we need to make sure Hoss leaves some for Santa.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>~The End<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">May all your Christmases bring you fond memories &#8212; Day 18<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Summary:\u00a0 Ben searches for a missing <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">son, amid memories of a certain winter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Rating:\u00a0 G\u00a0 1,450 words<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Christmas Wishes Series:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bonanzabrand.info\/library\/?p=15489\">Of Winters Past&#8230;<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bonanzabrand.info\/library\/?p=15489&amp;page=2\">Our Little Piece of Snow-Covered Heaven<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>\u201cGlory to God in the highest, and <strong>peace<\/strong> <strong>on earth<\/strong>,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>and goodwill toward men!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Our Little Piece of Snow-Covered Heaven<br \/>\n~~by Bluewindfarm<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Opening the door, Ben Cartwright heaved a sigh at seeing the snow of the night before had covered the ground thicker than he\u2019d anticipated.\u00a0 He\u2019d thought the snow was stopping by the time he\u2019d finally seen Little Joe tucked under the covers.\u00a0 He\u2019d enjoyed the time the two had spent talking of days long before his youngest was born.\u00a0 He, and Joe&#8217;s brothers, tried their best to keep Marie\u2019s memory alive for her child.\u00a0 So, a little bit of lost sleep was a small price to pay for the smile that lit Joe\u2019s face as they reminisced about his mother.<\/p>\n<p>Shaking his head, Ben stood there of two thoughts; one, it was going to be easy following his son because of the snow and two, it wasn\u2019t going to be easy following his son because of the snow.<\/p>\n<p>Entering the barn after tramping across the yard, Ben made quick work of saddling Buck.\u00a0 As his youngest son was more apt to do, he offered a brief apology to the gelding while leading him into the yard before mounting.\u00a0 Turning rein to direct his horse, the two followed the deep hoof prints left earlier in the morning.<\/p>\n<p>A ride that would normally have taken thirty minutes, or possibly twenty \u2013 depending on the rider and horse, ended up taking a little over three quarters of an hour.\u00a0 Unsure why he felt so pressed to follow, only that rational thought escaped him when he found the boy\u2019s covers tossed to the foot of the bed, the room empty, and him nowhere in the house.<\/p>\n<p>*****<\/p>\n<p>Stepping from his saddle, he tethered the reins and quickly checked his son\u2019s horse before following the footprints into the pines.<\/p>\n<p>The morning sun had already crested the eastern range before Ben pushed aside the last low-hanging branch that barred his way.\u00a0 Walking into the clearing he spied Hoss sitting on a large boulder.\u00a0 The recently turned sixteen-year old painted a picture of serenity with his legs crossed, his hands clutched to keep the blanket closed, and a smile of contentment on his face.\u00a0 The last time he\u2019d followed his son to this location had been the first snowfall after Adam had left for college.<\/p>\n<p>This morning, as he had back then, Ben left a waking Little Joe in the capable care of Hop Sing before taking the same trek, only with considerable more snow to struggle through than so long ago.<\/p>\n<p>With the snow crunching beneath his boots, Ben crossed the short distance to his middle son.<\/p>\n<p>Slowly, Hoss raised an index finger to his lips; indicating for his father to be quiet with one hand while pointing across the field with his other.\u00a0 There, Ben spied a small herd of deer, some pawing to reach the hidden grass while others were already nibbling.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHoss,\u201d Ben quietly called as he climbed the boulder.<\/p>\n<p>Whispering, \u201cLook up there Pa.\u201d\u00a0 Hoss pointed to a group of squirrels jumping from one branch to another, playing in the trees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long have you been out here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLong enough to see the sun rise, and watch all the critters.\u201d\u00a0 Shifting over, Hoss patted the heavy blanket on which he sat.\u00a0 \u201cLook there Pa; that eagle flying high.\u00a0 Don\u2019t he look so majestic?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The condensation of his breath rose in the cold air as he spoke, \u201cThat he does son.\u201d\u00a0 Taking a seat, Ben slipped his hands into the pockets of his jacket. \u00a0\u201cI was worried when I couldn\u2019t find you in the house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSorry Pa, but Hop Sing was still asleep and I didn\u2019t want to wake him.\u201d\u00a0 Startling and pointing once more, \u201cThere Pa!\u201d\u00a0 The smile spread wider across his face, his eyes brighter.<\/p>\n<p>Ben saw nothing, but then the snow shifted; forcing him to look harder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSnow fox, gotta be.\u201d\u00a0 Shivering, \u201cDon\u2019t that beat all.\u201d\u00a0 Pulling his hand back into the warmth of the blanket.\u00a0 Remembering his father setting beside him, \u201cGuess I shoulda left ya a note.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ben nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut when I saw all the snow, I knew ya\u2019d have no problem followin\u2019 me, if ya had a mind, and I figured ya\u2019d know where I went.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Acknowledging his understanding, \u201cIt\u2019s been a while since you\u2019ve come here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah, too much to do around the ranch to be able to come out here.\u201d\u00a0 Relishing the time alone with his father, but seeing the arched eyebrow that questioned his motive.\u00a0 \u201cGuess I got ta missin\u2019 Adam.\u00a0 I know I shouldn\u2019t feel this way, what with havin\u2019 got his letter an all.\u00a0 Tellin\u2019 us all he\u2019s plannin\u2019 on doin\u2019 over the holidays and how Grandpa Stoddard has the house all fancied up for Christmas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes those same letters can make times like these more difficult.\u00a0 The letter is proof that our loved one is far away, that they\u2019re not going to walk through the door, bearing gifts, and wish us \u2018Merry Christmas\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought\u2026.\u201d\u00a0 Bowing his head, \u201cDon\u2019t rightly know what I thought.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Placing an arm across his son\u2019s shoulders, \u201cYou thought if you came here you\u2019d feel closer to Adam.\u00a0 I remember before he left for college he\u2019d bring you up here, the two of you spent a lot of time together out here.\u00a0 Most of the time, though, the two of you would come during the Spring and Summer.\u00a0 When it was warmer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYa think he\u2019ll want to come back here once he graduates?\u201d\u00a0 Hoss wondered if his father understood the intent of his question.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wrote of his intentions to return to the Ponderosa.\u00a0 He should be home sometime late Summer, and you can ask him.\u201d\u00a0 Smiling, Ben nodded, he\u2019d understood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre ya mad at me Pa?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d pulling Hoss closer.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m not mad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hoss relished the embrace.\u00a0 \u201cPa, when we was travelin\u2019, did you ever see anythin\u2019 as beautiful as all this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Removing his arm from his son\u2019s shoulders, he took a moment to run a hand over his jawline; his eyes took in all that he could see, the open valley, the pines reaching towards the sky, the mountain range in the distance.\u00a0 When the land was green and blooming in Spring, or lush with thick grasses of Summer, it was a site to behold, but in the quiet of winter shrouded in a pristine snowfall, \u201cNo, I don\u2019t think I\u2019ve seen a place more beautiful than what we have right here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExcept Heaven?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve not seen Heaven,\u201d Ben playfully gruffed and gently shouldered into his son.<\/p>\n<p>Blushing, \u201cAnd I hope you don\u2019t, not for a long time.\u201d\u00a0 Slowly shaking his head, \u201cPa, I know my Christmas wish.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGo on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeein\u2019 God\u2019s beauty out there\u2026.\u201d Hoss jutted his chin forward, \u201cI wish everyone felt the way I do right now, I wish everyone could find <strong>peace on earth<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s a pretty big wish.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust my size, don\u2019t ya think, Pa?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, just your size.\u201d Rising to his feet and stepping down from the boulder, \u201cWhat say we head on home.\u00a0 We\u2019ve got a few chores to work on before we have a Cartwright snowball fight later today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSnowball fight?\u00a0 Like old times, huh?\u201d \u00a0Climbing to his feet and grabbing the blankets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHoss, your little brother has memories of his mother and a certain snowball fight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarie\u2019s first Christmas with us?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ben nodded, &#8220;I think it\u2019s time we gave him some memories of his own&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Blowing out a quick huff, \u201cMakes me wish Adam were here all the more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rubbing his gloved-hands together, \u201cIf he were, he\u2019d be on my team.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour team?\u201d Hoss queried.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSure, Little Joe said the two of you were unbeatable, so I need someone on my side to help even the score.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The two retraced their paths to where the horses stood.\u00a0 After securing the blankets behind his saddle, Hoss mounted Chub and gave a full-bellied laugh.<\/p>\n<p>Turning Buck for home, \u201cWhat\u2019s so funny?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Adam were here, can you imagine Joe pretendin\u2019 ta be hurt and Adam worryin\u2019 to see what\u2019s wrong?\u00a0 Then Joe\u2019d jump up and throw the snowball he\u2019d kept hidden.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd hit Adam dead center.\u00a0 SPLOT!\u201d \u00a0Ben smiled, \u201cJust like Marie did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust like Ma.\u00a0 They\u2019re two of a kind, aren\u2019t they Pa.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, son.\u00a0 Just like you and your mother.\u00a0 The two of you&#8230;. you&#8230;. you remind me a lot of your mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYa miss her Pa?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery day.\u00a0 Just like I miss Adam\u2019s mother and Joe\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Merry Christmas!\u00a0 Wishing everyone Peace on Earth!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Link to the 2017 Advent Calendar &#8211;
