One Special Night\u2026<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Said the night wind to the little Hoss,
\nDo you see what I see?
\nWay up in the sky, little Hoss,
\nDo you see what I see
\nA star, a star, dancing in the night
\nWith a tail as big as a kite
\nWith a tail as big as a kite<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAdam?\u00a0 How much longer?\u201d Hoss asked as he looked out the window behind the dining room table.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know, Hoss.\u00a0 The good news is the doctor\u2019s here,\u201d answered Adam.<\/span><\/p>\n

Staring out into the increasingly darkening sky, Hoss stilled when he finally saw the object of his search.\u00a0 \u201cHey Adam?\u00a0 Does that star shine when all babies are born?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat star?\u201d Adam asked as he came to stand behind his younger brother, placing his hands upon the boy’s shoulders.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThat star, like in the bible.\u201d\u00a0 Hoss pointed to the star that shone brighter than any other star in the night time sky.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNo, that star only shone once,\u201d Adam replied.\u00a0 \u201cThat star is the North Star, it\u2019s always bright.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBut it just seems so much brighter, almost like it\u2019s got a tail.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe storms earlier today cleared the skies, that\u2019s why it looks so much brighter.\u00a0 Besides, you\u2019re never up this late at night to see it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHow much longer?\u201d Hoss again inquired as he looked from the window to the staircase.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Said the little Hoss to his brother dear,<\/em>
\nDo you hear what I hear?
\nRinging through the sky, uh, Adam,
\nDo you hear what I hear?
\nA song, a song, high above the trees
\nWith a voice as big as the sea
\nWith a voice as big as the sea<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s here!\u201d exclaimed Hoss as he raced for the staircase.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhoa there, buddy.\u00a0 Pa told us we have to wait down here,\u201d advised Adam as he reached to stop his brother from running through the house and up the stairs.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBut only \u2018til the baby came.\u00a0 He\u2019s here, cain\u2019t ya hear \u2018im?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWho could miss hearing that cry,\u201d Adam stated.\u00a0 \u201cAnd, to correct you, you don\u2019t know that the baby\u2019s a \u2018he\u2019,\u00a0 we could have a baby sister.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNow why would we have a sister?\u00a0 So far we\u2019re jest brothers.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBecause Marie is his mother.\u00a0 She could have given birth to a baby girl.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019ll we do with a sister?\u00a0 Is she gonna cry like that all the time while she\u2019s grownin\u2019 up?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOnly when she needs fed or her diaper changed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cUgh.\u00a0 I ain\u2019t gonna change her,\u201d Hoss announced as he pinched his nose closed.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhy, I changed your diaper when you were a baby.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThat was only \u2018cause my ma died,\u201d Hoss sorrowfully stated.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThat wasn\u2019t the only reason.\u00a0 I did it because I loved you Hoss.\u00a0 And you\u2019ll love our sister.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Said the oldest son to his rancher pa,
\nDo you know what I know?
\nIn your homestead warm, full of love,
\nDo you know what I know?
\nA child, a child lying in her arms,
\nIs Marie fine, and the baby too?
\nIs Marie fine, and the baby too?<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Quietly the two brothers made it to the top of the staircase and waited for someone to come out from their parents\u2019 bedroom.\u00a0 Adam grew more pensive at the baby\u2019s insistent crying and that no adult had yet stepped from the room.\u00a0 Adam remembered what his father had told him about his own birth and how his mother had died a few hours afterwards.\u00a0 It should have been a day of celebration, but instead, the day of his birth had turned into a day of mourning.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cPa?\u201d Adam quietly spoke as the door opened. \u00a0\u2018Oh, God, please let them be okay.\u2019 <\/em>Adam prayed.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBoys?\u201d Ben startled, not knowing his two sons had made their way upstairs.\u00a0 \u201cWhat\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe heard the baby cryin\u2019, Pa,\u201d Hoss stated as he looked up to his father.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ben stood between his two sons, placing a hand on each of his son\u2019s shoulders.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cPa, Marie?\u00a0 The baby?\u201d inquired Adam.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDo we have a sister?\u201d Hoss hesitantly asked.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDo you want a sister?\u201d Ben answered, he hadn\u2019t really addressed the issue with his sons.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNot really, but Adam said with Ma bein\u2019 the baby\u2019s ma, she might have a girl.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSo you want a brother?\u201d Ben asked with a knowing smile.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYeah,\u201d answered Hoss with excitement.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAnd what about you, Adam?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI want Marie and the baby to be healthy.\u00a0 I want to love them Pa,\u201d Adam answered with sincerity, he knew it had been a long time coming, but he was growing to love Marie as a mother figure.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re both fine,\u201d Ben breathed out, he was finally accepting the fact that Paul Martin stated they both were healthy.\u00a0 \u201cMarie and your brother are both fine.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYEEHAW!\u00a0 We got a brother!\u201d Hoss declared as he jumped up and down.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cPa, they\u2019re really going to be okay?\u201d asked Adam as his fears began to evaporate.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYes, Paul said the baby was about a month early, but as you can hear, he has a set of lungs on him,\u201d laughed Ben.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Said the Pa in his quiet prayer of thanks,
\nListen to what I say!
\nPray for peace or should I pray for patience?
\nListen to what I say!
\nA child, my child, sleeping in the night<\/em><\/span>
\n He will bring me gray hair and grief.
\nYet I will love him and guide him in life.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Ben Cartwright had shown his two sons into the bedroom once Paul Martin said it was okay.\u00a0 Adam and Hoss had held their new brother in awe, with Adam giving Marie a kiss on the cheek before accepting the precious bundle into his arms.<\/span><\/p>\n

With the lateness of the hour, Ben escorted his sons to their bedrooms and tucked them in.\u00a0 He wondered what his newest son would bring; how would the newest Cartwright compliment the intelligence of Adam and the nature loving boy in Hoss?<\/span><\/p>\n

Ben sat in front of the fire, the sleeping child bundled in a blanket in his arms, he wondered about the life that was before them.\u00a0 He smiled at this miracle of life and remembered his father warning him that one day, he hoped that Ben would have a son who was just as curious and rambunctious as Ben had been in his younger days.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cRegardless of what you bring to this family, silver and gold or goodness and light or gray hair and grief\u2026 Joseph Francis Cartwright, I will love you for the rest of my life.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

I was already writing this story as a second submission for Rider’s 2013 Christmas Challenge before I saw Joanie Paiute’s Weekly Seedlings Challenge for December 16th and was able to complete both challenges within one story.\u00a0 Though my story was inspired by a Christmas song, it is not Christmas related.<\/span><\/p>\n

Originally this story was posted under the Seedlings Challenge, but JoaniePaiute suggested I post this story in the library as well.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Christmas Challenge was to write a Bonanza story using a Christmas song title or the premise of the song as the basis for the story.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Weekly Seedlings Challenge was to incorporate the words Silver and\/or Gold into a Bonanza story.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

I chose to base my story on the Christmas Song, “Do You Hear What I Hear?”<\/span><\/p>\n

This is just exquisite, Bluewind! I love your revised rendition of the carol, and the way it blends into the scenes of your story. Your Hoss and Adam are wonderful little boys, and I love Adam’s mature hope that both mother and child are safe.
