When she is going to their ranch one day she finds something that isn\u2019t all that pleasant, especially for Little Joe. What she doesn\u2019t realize is that that will set off a chain of events that might lead to the death of a Cartwright or maybe even herself. Will they all survive? (This is in a non-cannon character\u2019s POV)<\/p>\n<p>Rated- K+\u00a0 Word Count- 3,095<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>More than a Mountain Lion<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m out on Clementine early in the morning, around seven, going to the Ponderosa Ranch, when I hear a gunshot, not a mile, or so, from where I am. Being me, the curious one, I go and investigate. Right when I get over there, Clementine starts to get nervous. \u201cCalm down girl. It\u2019s okay,\u201d I say to the distressed mare.<\/p>\n<p>Once, I get over to the scene of the crime I hear Little Joe Cartwright yell.\u201cHey! Who is that!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I jump off Clementine\u2019s back and run over to Joe, and at that same moment he passes out from the pain. He has long cuts down his arms that look as if they could have been made by knives. Mud stains his pants and shirt that show that he was rolling on the ground with something on top of him. To me these are tell-tale signs of being attacked by a mountain lion.<\/p>\n<p>*****<\/p>\n<p>Five hours later, at the Ponderosa Ranch House, the doctor comes down the stairs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs he alright, Doc?\u201d asks Hoss.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s gonna be fine Hoss, he\u2019s a strong boy you know,\u201d claims the doctor. \u201cBen, come here a second.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes doctor,\u201d says Ben as they walk into the study.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBen, it\u2019s Joe,\u201d says the doctor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about Joe, you said he was going to be alright,\u201d gasps Ben.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, I know I did, but if that boy doesn\u2019t get some decent doctoring he\u2019s gonna die,\u201d the doctor explains.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you mean \u2018he\u2019s gonna die\u2019? I mean, he\u2019s a strong boy,\u201d says Ben.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBen, that lion broke off one of his ribs, and now I fear the rib &#8211; if not treated properly &#8211; will puncture his left lung,\u201d says the doctor warily.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan\u2019t you help him?\u201d asks the father.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSorry to say it, but no,\u201d answers the doctor, \u201cYou\u2019ll have to wire a surgeon in San Francisco and see if he can spare the time for a surgery here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>*****<\/p>\n<p>That night as I\u2019m keeping a silent vigil, I drift off and I dream of the day Little Joe Cartwright and I met all those years ago.<\/p>\n<p>*****<\/p>\n<p><i>It\u2019s my very first day of school in Virginia City and I made sure that my mother ironed my Sunday dress the day before, so I could wear it today. My dress is blue and has little white flowers all over it; there is a white-collar with lace around the edge. The sleeves aren\u2019t long, and are puffy. I have my thick brown hair down, with a little bit tied back with a blue ribbon.\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>It might not seem that big of a deal going to a new school, but there is a certain boy I want to impress. Little Joe Cartwright. I have never met him in person, but I\u2019ve hung around in the shadows enough to know that he\u2019s the best boy in the world. He isn\u2019t just handsome; his laugh is so infectious, his smile so bright. The way he holds the door for older women is so charming. I love the way he jokes around with his friends.\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Walking into the school yard I suddenly feel all alone. Where do I go? I decide to go straight into the school-house to tell the teacher of my arrival.\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>I walk in to see three boys standing with their backs to me. Who are they? They are in here, but there is no teacher in sight.\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cUm&#8230;hello? Where\u2019s the teacher?\u201d I ask making my presence known to them.\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>The boys turn around and I quickly recognize them as Mitch Devlin, Seth Pruitt, and the very own Joe Cartwright! Their faces looked battered. They have dirt all over them. Mitch and Joe quickly take my arms and seat me in the front seat.\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cWe haven\u2019t seen you around. Where do you live? My name\u2019s Little Joe and this is Mitch. Over there is Seth. What\u2019s your name?\u201d\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cWell&#8230;My pa just bought a ranch and I haven\u2019t had much time to get into town. My name\u2019s Elizabeth Steward, but everyone calls me Lizzy. Nice to meet you three. But I really need to see the teacher. Where is she?\u201d\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cWell&#8230;Lizzy&#8230;I guess it was kinda a coincidence that all our pa\u2019s were in town at the same time; After Joe here got into a fight and we had to help him, Miss Jones was all \u2018Well I\u2019m so glad all the fathers are in town\u2019!\u201d said Seth.\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cOh you poor dears! Look your lips are busted and bleeding! Now you three sit here and let me clean you three up.\u201d\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cNow that don\u2019t have to happen, we\u2019re fine. We\u2019ve been in fights before,\u201d said Mitch.\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cThat\u2019s not that bad of an idea Mitch. Maybe if our pa\u2019s see us not lookin\u2019 so bad we\u2019ll be let off easier. Come on Lizzy I\u2019ll show you where the pump is,\u201d says Joe.\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>And at that we went out side.\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>*****\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m brought back from my reverie by hearing Joe shout.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo! Get off of me! Stop!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLittle Joe!\u201d I yell, \u201cIt\u2019s gonna be all right, the lion\u2019s gone.\u201d But he keeps on. \u201cHoss! Adam! Come quick!\u201d I scream, while Mr. Cartwright is, also, busy trying to comfort his nineteen-year-old son.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is it Miss Lizzy?\u201d Hoss bellows as he burst through the door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s Joe, he woke up, but he won\u2019t stay still!\u201d I wail. \u201cCome here and hold him down,\u201d I direct, but by then he and Adam were already holding his arms down. \u201cJoe, sweetie it\u2019s all right nothing\u2019s going to hurt you anymore; will you look at me dear?\u201d I say as calmly as I can manage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLizzy, is that you?\u201d cautions Little Joe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, it\u2019s me,\u201d I reassure.<\/p>\n<p>*****<\/p>\n<p>When it was just Mr. Cartwright in the room with me I decided that I should tell him the truth.\u201cMr. Cartwright. Can I tell you something?\u201d I ask.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes Lizzy?\u201d he answers as he looked up from his injured son.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUh, nothing,\u201d I sniff, \u201cIt\u2019s not important.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElizabeth what\u2019s wrong?\u201d he asks as he lifted my slumped head. That\u2019s when I couldn\u2019t hold it back anymore.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh, Mr. Cartwright! He told me not to tell you,\u201d I confess.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho told you not to tell me what?\u201d He wondered all the while perplexed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJoe woke up right after Doc Martin left,\u201d I spilled, \u201cBut he told me not to tell you!\u201d By then I had already woken up Joe and he is fretting over why I am crying and Mr. Cartwright, I could tell is getting a little upset himself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLizzy, what\u2019s wrong?\u201d asks Joe not having a clue what had happened while he was asleep. \u201cOh Little Joe, it\u2019s okay, go back to sleep now. I\u2019m sorry I woke you up,\u201d I comfort.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow Lizzy if I\u2019m not mistaken you\u2019re not the one to cry unless you\u2019re hurt or\u2014\u201d he doesn&#8217;t finish his sentence, because he drifts into a deep sleep once again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLizzy, what did he say when he woke up?\u201d Mr. Cartwright worries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPa, not now. Miss Lizzy how \u2018bout you go and sleep in the guest room down stairs, you look tuckered out,\u201d said Hoss, who had materialized at the door.<\/p>\n<p>I yawn. \u201cFine.\u201d I say.<\/p>\n<p>*****<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLizzy\u2014Lizzy?\u201d coaxes Adam while tapping my shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d I ask.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s time to wake up sleepy head!\u201d Adam jokes.<\/p>\n<p>Suddenly I realize it isn\u2019t day any more. \u201cWhy didn\u2019t you wake me up?\u201d I demand of the tall man beside me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow Pa was the one who wouldn\u2019t let me!\u201d said Adam, defending himself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, let\u2019s go see him, but before we do anything, can I tell you something in private?\u201d I ask tentatively.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSure, what about?\u201d he asks as he seats himself in an armchair across from the bed. \u201cWell, I don\u2019t want you telling Hoss or your father; okay?\u201d I caution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay, anything for you,\u201d agrees the oldest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, it\u2019s\u2014\u201d I am cut off by a rap at the door. \u201cLizzy? Adam? Are you two in there?\u201d asks Mr. Cartwright through the door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah Pa, we\u2019re in here,\u201d says Adam. He is obviously discouraged that he doesn\u2019t get to hear what I have to say.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCome in,\u201d I say as I shoot Adam a dirty look for not inviting his father in himself. The door opens and Mr. Cartwright steps in, sits down beside me, and wraps his arm around my shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJoe wants to see you Lizzy,\u201d says the father. \u201cHe does?\u201d I say as I go to the door. \u201cLet\u2019s go before he goes back to sleep!\u201d I say.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s all I remember since; I start up the stairs in a hurry, then I hear a gunshot and see an inky stain seeping through the maroon dress I have on. The first thing I thought was, \u2018<i>Oh no! My new dress will be ruined!\u2019 <\/i>Then everything goes dark and all I can hear are voices for a while. \u201cAdam! (shots fired) Get her to the (more shots fired) back into the room!\u201d yells Mr. Cartwright.<\/p>\n<p>*****<\/p>\n<p>Then, I am really cold and in a field and on the other side was my horse, Clementine,\u00a0 with a handsome man on her back. I want to go towards him, but he is shaking his head no. Why not? I want to go with you. It looks so peaceful and warm over there. If only I could get there and away from the pain.<\/p>\n<p>I hear someone yelling at me and it strangely sounds like Adam. \u201cAdam, where are you?\u201d I yell.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m right here, you just hold on, you\u2019ll be all right,\u201d replied Adam. Then, Clementine and the man are gone, my vision goes blurry, and then&#8230;.. total darkness.<\/p>\n<p>*****<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLizzy!?\u201d screams Joe from upstairs, but there is no answer. \u201cLizzy! Come on I know you couldn\u2019t have gotten hurt!\u201d Little Joe pleads.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJoseph!\u201d Mr. Cartwright yells up the stairs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell me how she is and I won\u2019t be so loud, otherwise I\u2019m gonna keep on yell\u2019n!\u201d hisses Joe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s fine,\u201d his father assures, then whispers to himself. \u201cHow could I\u2019ve let this happen. First, my son gets mauled by a mountain lion! Then, Elizabeth gets shot!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>*****<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAdam, Come \u2018ere a minute,\u201d whispers Hoss so their father wouldn&#8217;t hear. \u201cDid Miss Lizzy tell you what Joe said?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, but even if she did I wouldn\u2019t tell you, because she told me not to,\u201d replies Adam coldly. \u201cWhen did she say that?\u201d asks the middle brother.<br \/>\n\u201cWhen I went to wake her up,\u201d answers Adam.<br \/>\n*****<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUh\u2014\u201d I groan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLizzy! Stay awake,\u201d urges Hoss.\u201cPa! Lizzy\u2019s awake!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLizzy, darling, here have some water,\u201d insists Mr. Cartwright while pouring a glass of water, and holding it up to my lips.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUh! Why does my shoulder hurt?\u201d I gasp.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome guys were tryin\u2019 to rob us, I guess, and when you came out, and they shot you thinking you were a man tryin\u2019 to get \u2018em,\u201d explains Hoss.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWait, but you weren\u2019t there. Were you?\u201d I question.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo I wasn\u2019t, I was meetin\u2019 the surgeon, but Adam told me what had happened,\u201d says the big man.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLizzy, are you okay?\u201d worries the eldest brother.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh. I don\u2019t feel\u2014\u201d I\u2019m interrupted by a fiery pain that felt like someone is sticking me with a hot branding iron. \u201cAhh,\u201d I moan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHang in there Lizzy,\u201d Mr. Cartwright whispers into my ear as I start to faint. \u201cOkay\u2014\u201d I say as darkness soon closes in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoctor! We need to get that bullet out!\u201d bellows Ben Cartwright.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Cartwright, we can\u2019t probe in her weak condition; the bullets just, too close to her rib cage,\u201d explains the doctor.<\/p>\n<p>*****<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Cartwright stands outside the guest room door while Adam and Hoss wait with Little Joe upstairs. \u201cWhat\u2019s wrong big brother?\u201d asks the youngest of the three.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn\u2019t those guys have any bags?\u201d answers Hoss.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, I\u2019ve been thinkin&#8217; about that myself; I just don\u2019t know,\u201d says Joe.<\/p>\n<p>*****<\/p>\n<p>Hoss walks down stairs and over to his Pa, who is sitting in his red\u00a0chair, and asks, \u201cPa? Will she be alright?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope so son,\u201d answered Ben as he put a sympathetic hand on his middle son\u2019s shoulder. \u201cI sure hope so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>*****<\/p>\n<p>Slowly everything comes back to me. \u201cWhere am I?\u201d I ask barely conscious.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re at the Ponderosa Ranch,\u201d says Ben Cartwright while putting a hand on my forehead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy am I so hot?\u201d I wonder aloud.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have a fever from the gunshot wound you have,\u201d he answers in a melancholy tone of voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m thirsty,\u201d I complain, which is perfectly fine for a woman in my condition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHere,\u201d comes the answer from Adam. \u201cLift her up Hoss.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Soon, I am being lifted from my lying down position to a partially sitting one, and a glass of water is put to my lips.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow, don\u2019t drink too much,\u201d instructs Mr. Cartwright.<\/p>\n<p>*****<\/p>\n<p>After a week or two I am able to move around without too much help, but it will take Joe a couple more weeks to recover from his surgery. The doctor says I have to stay at the ranch for \u2018observation\u2019, so I pass the time playing checkers with Hoss.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHey Miss Lizzy, why don\u2019t you rest for a while, you\u2019re looking a lil\u2019 tired,\u201d says Hoss.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, I guess you\u2019re right. I am a bit\u2014\u201d I don\u2019t finish, because the room starts to spin around me. Then I faint.<\/p>\n<p>*****<\/p>\n<p>When I wake up, I see the doctor beside me talking to Mr. Cartwright, showing him a bottle of gross looking liquid, and Hoss is on my other side holding my hand with his other hand holding the newspaper. \u201cHoss, shh, don\u2019t tell anybody,\u201d I whisper loud enough for only him to hear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah?\u201d the gentle man whispers back while squeezing my hand a little tighter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen Little Joe woke up those many weeks ago he told me he was bushwhacked by the person he beat playing poker at the silver dollar, and that\u2019s who sent the people to shoot me!\u201d I confide with the large man.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut, what does that have to do with you getin&#8217; shot?\u201d asks Hoss.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told me it was Andrew Gravest and I guess he thought I was going tell, and Hoss, he has men everywhere, and now he\u2019s going try to kill you!\u201d I quaver, \u201cYou need to go hide out somewhere!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNope, I\u2019m stayin&#8217; here with you and Little Joe \u2019til you two are as fine as frog hair,\u201d he answers with an inexpressive tone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut Hoss they\u2019re going kill you!\u201d I say. And Mr. Cartwright notices that I am awake.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLizzy, how do you feel; why are you crying?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, sir, when Little Joe woke up after Doc Martin left he told me he had been bushwhacked by Andrew Gravest, and I guess he thought I was going tell, so he shot me with the intention of killing me! And now they\u2019re going kill you, too!\u201d I wail in response. There was a silence in the room that sent a shiver up my spine. \u2018<i>Was I that loud?\u2019 <\/i>I think. Then I see him.<\/p>\n<p>*****<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s right ya know Cartwright,\u201d agreed Andrew Gravest with a gun pointed at my head. I see Little Joe at the top of stairs, because the door is open, but Andrew sees him too.\u201cJoe, don\u2019t move or else Miss Elizabeth Steward meets her late relatives!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLittle Joe, it\u2019s fine! Don\u2019t do anything\u201d I scream. But, instead of listening, he\u2019s waiting for our captor to look away. \u201cPlease don\u2019t shoot me,\u201d I say.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShut up!\u201d He snarls, all the while not taking his eyes of Joe long enough for him to pull his hidden arm out from behind the wall to shoot.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease, don\u2019t shoot me,\u201d I repeat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShut up!\u201d He yells.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease, don\u2019t shoot me,\u201d I repeat again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow, if you don\u2019t shut up, I\u2019ma gonna shoot you!\u201d He warns, while he stares at me for a long time with hate filled eyes.<\/p>\n<p>*****<\/p>\n<p>Then there\u2019s gunshots; one goes through my leg and the other goes through Andrew Gravest\u2019s chest. As quick as I had awoken from the state of being unconscious, I slip back into the feeling of being freezing cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLizzy!\u201d screams Joe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJoseph, she can\u2019t hear you,\u201d states the father.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs she&#8230;\u201d stutters the nineteen-year-old boy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, she\u2019s just unconscious,\u201d says Ben.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s all my fault,\u201d murmurs Joe. \u201cIf I hadn\u2019t gone to town, Andrew would\u2019ve never wanted to kill me!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTrue Shortshanks, but you sure didn\u2019t do it on purpose,\u201d consoles Hoss. \u201cYeah, I guess you\u2019re right,\u201d says Joe looking up at his older brother.<\/p>\n<p>*****<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you all for this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAww. No problem Lizzy. You and your family would have done the same for us,\u201d says Hoss.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah Lizzy.\u201d Joe replies as he reaches up to kiss me. I kiss him back and, with a clucking noise, my father drives me back home.<\/p>\n<p>*****<\/p>\n<p>Still there standing in the yard Joe is talking with his pa. \u201cDo you think she\u2019s the one Joe?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah Pa. She\u2019s the one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen are you going to ask?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>*****<\/p>\n<p>The next day, I\u2019m sitting on the porch swing when Joe arrives. \u201cWhy Joe! Just what are you doing here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had to ask you something important.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow what could that be?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell,\u201d he says sitting on the swing next to me. \u201cI was thinking that, we\u2019ve known each other for long time. Am I right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes Joe, of course you\u2019re right. Since we were fourteen.\u201d I responded not having a clue what he was getting at.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, and I\u2019ve been courting you since we were sixteen.\u201d Joe says in a nervous way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJoe come on. Get to the point.\u201d I say getting anxious.<br \/>\n\u201cWell, I think I know what I feel, and what you feel. So Lizzy, will you marry me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes Joe! Yes!\u201d I say as I start crying out of pure joy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you sure? I mean we can make it a long engagement if you don\u2019t feel you\u2019re ready for it yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJoe I\u2019ve never been more sure about one thing in my whole life!\u201d I assure him.
