{"id":21199,"date":"2019-04-14T22:38:04","date_gmt":"2019-04-15T02:38:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bonanzabrand.info\/library\/?p=21199"},"modified":"2025-09-25T15:39:42","modified_gmt":"2025-09-25T19:39:42","slug":"target-practice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bonanzabrand.info\/library\/?p=21199","title":{"rendered":"Target Practice (by McFair_58)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Summary<\/strong>:\u00a0 It was just another ordinary day for Adam Cartwright, with the ordinary prospect that he would have to step in and keep his little brother out of trouble.\u00a0 Or was it?<\/p>\n<p>Word count: 2507<\/p>\n<p>Rated: G<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Target Practice<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hey, Adam, I&#8217;m heading out.\u00a0 You want to come along?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Adam Cartwright looked over the edge of his Boston newspaper at his eager-as-a-puppy younger brother.\u00a0 Joe had his gray corduroy jacket on and his black hat anchored on his curly head and was ready to roll.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Er\u2026.\u00a0 No thank you, Joe.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Oh, come on, older brother.\u00a0 There&#8217;s a new day dawning.\u00a0 Who knows what it holds?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Adam folded his paper with a sigh.\u00a0 &#8220;I&#8217;m quite content with the day I have, younger brother.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Adam, come on.\u00a0 I\u2026well\u2026I feel like company.\u00a0 Pa told me to mend the north fence.&#8221;\u00a0 Joe&#8217;s puppy-dog-eyes-look was next. \u00a0&#8220;It&#8217;ll go a lot faster if there are two of us.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I take it there&#8217;s a reason for your haste?\u00a0 Perhaps you have a planned assignation with some diaphanous nymph?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Joe&#8217;s brows popped.\u00a0 &#8220;An ass-ey what with a who?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;An assign\u2026.\u00a0 Oh, never mind.\u00a0 A date with a girl.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>His brother beamed.\u00a0 &#8220;Well, why didn&#8217;t you say so in the first place? \u00a0As a matter of fact I do.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Adam ticked off the list in his head.\u00a0 It had been about two weeks and there were at least five candidates.\u00a0 Cally, Sally, Susie, Mindy and Delores. \u00a0The first two were blondes. The third, a wide-eyed beauty with saddle-brown hair.\u00a0 The last two were brunettes, which his little brother favored.\u00a0 Delores was of mixed Spanish and white blood.<\/p>\n<p>She was a feisty little filly.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Delores?&#8221; he asked.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Now, how&#8217;d you guess, older brother?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It wasn&#8217;t hard. \u00a0Just pick the girl\u00a0 &#8211; or situation &#8211; where Little Joe could get into the most trouble and more than likely you&#8217;d hit the mark.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I thought her brothers warned you to keep your distance.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Joe was looking at his reflected image in the highly polished surface of a silver pitcher sitting on the round side table and straightening his hat.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Nah.\u00a0 They didn&#8217;t warn me. \u00a0They just kind of\u2026suggested it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Strongly?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Joe managed to tear his eyes away from the pitcher &#8211; and himself &#8211; to roll them his way.<\/p>\n<p>Now, he loved his youngest brother.\u00a0 He had since the boy entered this life screaming out his defiance\u00a0 and Marie had placed the red-faced little bundle of\u2026joy\u2026into his hands and Joe had spit up all over him &#8211; and then grinned, like he was grinning now.\u00a0 Joe had a unique talent of making every day new.<\/p>\n<p>So he could take advantage of people over and over again.<\/p>\n<p>No, that wasn\u2019t fair.\u00a0 There wasn&#8217;t a malicious bone in his brother&#8217; body.<\/p>\n<p>There weren&#8217;t too many that were intact either.\u00a0 Joe had broken most of them, or had most of them broken by the &#8216;non-threatening&#8217; likes of the Del Rio brothers &#8211; all four of them.<\/p>\n<p>He supposed this was the end of his quiet morning.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;All right,&#8221; Adam said as he rose to his feet.\u00a0 &#8220;I&#8217;ll go with you on one condition.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Joe looked wary &#8211; and he had every right to.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What condition?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That I escort you into town and make sure you arrive at your destination\u2026undamaged.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hey!\u00a0 What&#8217;s Delores gonna think when she sees me escorted into town by my older brother like some snot-nosed kid?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Probably that you <em>are<\/em> a snot-nosed kid, Adam thought.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Joe, you&#8217;re only seventeen.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>His brother pulled himself up to his less-than-considerable height.\u00a0 &#8220;I was man enough for Julia Bullette!&#8221; he declared.<\/p>\n<p>And they hadn&#8217;t lived <em>that <\/em>one down yet.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Joe,&#8221; he began, avoiding the usual, ever-present and detested &#8216;little&#8217; that sent his baby brother&#8217;s hackles flying.\u00a0 &#8220;Look, Pa left me in charge.\u00a0 If anything should happen to you\u2026.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Joe was in the middle of adjusting his hat &#8211; again &#8211; so that it sat on his curly head at just the right jaunty angle.\u00a0 He threw a look his way that was all innocence.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Oh, come on, now, Adam.\u00a0 We&#8217;re just riding fence. \u00a0What could possibly happen?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>With another sigh, Adam headed for the door and his own coat.<\/p>\n<p>What did they say?<\/p>\n<p>Out of the mouths of babes?<\/p>\n<p>**********<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;See, older brother?\u00a0 All safe and sound.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Adam used the sleeve of his wine-colored shirt to wipe the sweat from his forehead before turning to look.\u00a0 Joe was striding toward him with the post driver anchored on his shoulder.\u00a0 He&#8217;d gone to the wagon to get the tool and, if the truth be told, he&#8217;d been holding his breath ever since waiting for him to come back with a black eye or a bloody nose, or maybe even both.<\/p>\n<p>But he was whole and hale.<\/p>\n<p>Placing the head of the driver on the ground, Joe used it as a prop to whirl in a circle.\u00a0 &#8220;Not a scratch on me as you can see!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>After rolling his shirt sleeves down and buttoning them, Adam walked over to stand before his brother.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;No irate older brothers waiting by the wagon?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Nary a one.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;No highway robber popped out of the brush to bushwhack you?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Nope.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;How about a party of Indians?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Joe held his arms out.\u00a0 &#8220;You see any arrows?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>No, he didn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p>But then he hadn&#8217;t looked at the back of him yet.<\/p>\n<p>The kid was sharp.\u00a0 His little brother snorted and turned his backside toward him and waved his fanny in a salute.<\/p>\n<p>The smug smile Joe flashed as he turned back almost earned him a swat on it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Okay, Joe.\u00a0 I have to admit I was wrong.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Those mobile brows of his brother&#8217;s popped toward the curls spilling onto his forehead.\u00a0 &#8220;Whoo-ee!\u00a0 Adam Cartwright admitting he was wrong.&#8221;\u00a0 Joe placed a hand to his ear and cupped it.\u00a0 &#8220;Wait.\u00a0 Do you hear it?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hear what?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Why, the sound of hell freezing over, older brother!&#8221; he smirked.\u00a0 &#8220;Admit it, Adam.\u00a0 You thought I couldn&#8217;t make it through a day without someone taking a swing at me.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Adam squinted and wiped away a little more sweat.\u00a0 &#8220;The day&#8217;s not over yet, baby brother.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>What was that he&#8217;d said before?<\/p>\n<p>Out of the mouths of\u2026.<\/p>\n<p>**********<\/p>\n<p>Ben Cartwright was waiting anxiously for his youngest and oldest son to return from town.\u00a0 Hoss had come home earlier and told him that he saw the pair headed toward the dress shop where Delores Del Rio worked.\u00a0 &#8216;Delicious Delores&#8217;, as she was known, had caught his youngest son&#8217;s eye a few weeks back. She was a year or two older than Joseph and had four well-muscled, tall, and <em>very<\/em> protective older brothers.\u00a0 He&#8217;d had a word with their father and the older man had nothing against Little Joe, but he did warn him that his boys took great exception to any man who came courting their sister &#8211; and especially if he was not of the\u2026er\u2026Spanish persuasion.\u00a0 With his rich brown curls and his mother&#8217;s green eyes and porcelain skin &#8211; especially now after being inside all winter and out of the sun &#8211; Joseph definitely bore no resemblance to a conquistador.\u00a0 He&#8217;d left that morning leaving Adam with <em>specific<\/em> instructions to keep his brother out of town and away from the girl if at all possible.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently it hadn&#8217;t been possible and so Adam had gone along.<\/p>\n<p>As Ben pulled at his chin wishing &#8211; and not for the first time &#8211; that he had whiskers, he heard the sound of horses&#8217; hooves pounding into the yard.\u00a0 It was accompanied by a high-pitched whoop, which was followed by a rising crescendo of girly giggles.<\/p>\n<p>His sons were home.<\/p>\n<p>Ben closed his eyes.\u00a0 Joseph was in high spirits.\u00a0 Most often that meant his youngest had been in one hell-of-a-hell-raising fight.\u00a0 That boy loved to test his mettle as much as Hop Sing loved to cook. \u00a0Steeling himself, the older man walked to the front door and opened it.<\/p>\n<p>If there had been flies, they would have had no trouble making their way into his mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Adam stood before him.\u00a0 His eldest&#8217;s left eye was black.\u00a0 His lip was split.\u00a0 His nose bent a little toward the south and was crusted with dried blood.\u00a0 There were holes in his jacket and he was walking with a limp.<\/p>\n<p>He was also glowering at his younger brother who trailed behind him looking fresh as a rose.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You,&#8221; Adam snarled, &#8220;will come nowhere near me for the rest of the night &#8211; maybe for the rest of your life!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Joe affected a hurt look &#8211; and yes, it was affected.\u00a0 &#8220;Who me?\u00a0 What&#8217;d I do?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You were born!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As Adam limped over to the blue velvet chair by the fire and fell into it, Ben turned to Joe.\u00a0 &#8220;What did you do?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This time the hurt look was <em>not <\/em>affected.\u00a0\u00a0 &#8220;What&#8217;d I <em>do?<\/em>\u00a0 What did<em> I<\/em> do?\u00a0 Why don&#8217;t you ask old Yankee granite head there what <em>he<\/em> did?\u00a0 Wasn\u2019t me took on four mountains of muscle with only my fists.\u00a0 Oh, no!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ben blinked.\u00a0 He swung toward his oldest son.\u00a0 &#8220;Adam?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The boy blinked back.\u00a0 &#8220;I don&#8217;t want to talk about it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Okay\u2026.&#8221;\u00a0 The older man turned back to his youngest son.\u00a0 &#8220;Do <em>you<\/em> want to talk about it?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Pa\u2026.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Adam, hush!&#8221;\u00a0 He crossed his arms.\u00a0 &#8220;Well, Joseph?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You see, it was like this, Pa,&#8221; Joe said as he moved across the room, grabbed an apple from the bowl on the sofa table, and polished it on the thigh of his pristine pants.\u00a0 &#8220;I was minding my own business, talking to Delores\u2026&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>Kissing<\/em> Delores,&#8221; Adam corrected.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We might of smooched a bit.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Try a <em>lot<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Joe scowled.\u00a0 &#8220;Hey, Adam!\u00a0 Are you tellin&#8217; this story or me?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Adam smirked.\u00a0 &#8220;Be my guest.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll be excited to hear it for the first time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>If he hadn&#8217;t wanted to avoid being called a little boy, Ben was sure Joseph would have plunged his fingers in his ears and stuck out his tongue.\u00a0 Instead he drew himself up to his full seventeen-year-old dignity.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Delores and I were\u2026talking. \u00a0Her brothers came up and told me to leave her alone.\u00a0 When I said Delores should be able to make up her own mind, they said they weren&#8217;t gonna let their sister be seen with any gringo cowboy with a bigamous braggart for a father.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ben&#8217;s eyebrows imitated his son&#8217;s in action.\u00a0 &#8220;So<em> that<\/em> was when you lost your temper and tried to take them on, and your brother stepped in to stop you.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Joe shook his head.\u00a0 &#8220;I&#8217;m afraid you got that backwards, Pa.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>His oldest leaned back and lifted his feet.\u00a0 Adam moaned as he planted them on the ottoman.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So sue me,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Adam?&#8221;\u00a0 Ben asked.\u00a0 &#8220;<em>Adam<\/em> started the fight?\u00a0 Not <em>you?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Me, Pa?&#8221; Joe asked all innocence. \u00a0&#8220;Heck, no.\u00a0 I made a promise to you this morning that I wouldn&#8217;t get into trouble and I meant to keep it.\u00a0 I figured we could take a few insults.\u00a0 We&#8217;re Cartwrights, after all.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>His head was reeling.\u00a0 &#8220;Was that all they said?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Just about.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Eh-hem.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ben pivoted toward his oldest son.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Your son, Joseph,&#8221; he began, &#8220;showed <em>surprising <\/em>restraint, Pa, even when the Del Rio brothers went on to say that the name of Cartwright shouldn&#8217;t be dragged through the mud, but through the <em>dung<\/em> because that&#8217;s where low-life cattle-huggers like us belonged.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ben pivoted back.\u00a0 For a moment he wondered if this was <em>really<\/em> his youngest son standing before him.<\/p>\n<p>Joe looked sheepish.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Delores is <em>really<\/em> pretty, Pa.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Oh, yes.<\/p>\n<p>The girl.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So, even though the Del Rio brothers insulted your father <em>and <\/em>your family name, <em>you<\/em> were able to keep your temper when your older cool-headed brother was not?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Yeah, Pa!\u00a0 Aren&#8217;t you proud of me?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ben pinned him with a stare.\u00a0 &#8220;<em>Should<\/em> I be?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>His boots suddenly became very interesting to his youngest.<\/p>\n<p>After a moment, the rancher said &#8211; calmly, &#8220;Joseph, would you care to tell me about the <em>holes<\/em> in your brother&#8217;s jacket.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Little Joe shifted those boots before looking up.\u00a0 &#8220;Well, you see, Pa, when Adam went full tilt for the Del Rio brothers, I told him he was bein&#8217; stupid and was gonna end up with a black eye or worse.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Touch\u00e9!&#8221; Adam declared pointing a finger at his eye.<\/p>\n<p>Joe made a face.\u00a0 &#8220;I pulled him out of the middle of it and shoved him toward Sport and told him we should get the heck out of there before we got ourselves killed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ben looked at Adam and Adam &#8211; reluctantly &#8211; nodded.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I sort of pulled his jacket off while we were running.\u00a0 That&#8217;s when Adam fell and hurt his leg.\u00a0 And then when the shooting started -&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The shooting? \u00a0The Del Rio brothers were <em>shooting<\/em> at you?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>Not<\/em>\u2026the brothers,&#8221; his eldest chimed in.<\/p>\n<p>Ben was incredulous.\u00a0 He looked at Joe.\u00a0 &#8220;Delores?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Joe scratched his head. \u00a0&#8220;I guess she was kind of mad that I didn&#8217;t stand up for the honor of the family,&#8221; he admitted.\u00a0 &#8220;Or fight for her.\u00a0 Seems in Mexico dyin&#8217; to prove you love a girl is considered a noble thing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ben felt like scratching his own head.<\/p>\n<p>Because it hurt.<\/p>\n<p>He was sure he didn&#8217;t want to know, but he asked anyway.\u00a0 &#8220;So that&#8217;s how your brother got the holes in his jacket?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Joseph nodded.\u00a0 &#8220;Delores was firin&#8217; into the dirt.\u00a0 The bullets hit it when I tossed it back to him.\u00a0 Good thing he put it on too &#8217;cause it deflected the arrows.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Arrows?&#8221;\u00a0 Ben shot a look at his eldest son&#8217;s jacket where it hung over one arm of the blue chair.\u00a0 &#8220;You mean there are <em>arrow<\/em> holes too?!\u00a0 Don\u2019t tell me one of the Del Rio brothers is an expert archer?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>That<\/em> would have been Chief Winnemucca,&#8221; Adam sighed.<\/p>\n<p>Joe sighed as well.\u00a0 &#8220;Sarah&#8217;s mighty pretty too, Pa.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>Always <\/em>a girl.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So, let me get this straight.\u00a0 The two of you mended the fence without incident and went into town &#8211; against my wishes &#8211; with the express purpose of seeing a girl I told you not to see, which angered her brothers and drew you into a fight with them &#8211; and Chief Winnemucca &#8211; that ended with both bullets and arrows flying?!!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Little Joe was shaking his head.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>I<\/em> didn\u2019t get into any fight.\u00a0 I kept my cool.&#8221;\u00a0 Joe took a bite from the apple.\u00a0 &#8220;It was old Adam there who stirred up the trouble.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Both of them turned toward Adam.\u00a0 Ben was awaiting the explosion.<\/p>\n<p>It never came.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, Adam lifted his hands in surrender.\u00a0 &#8220;Guilty as sin!&#8221; he cried.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;See, Pa?\u00a0 I told you it would have been better if you&#8217;d left me in charge,&#8221; Little Joe remarked as he headed toward the kitchen, tossing the apple in the air.\u00a0 &#8220;Next time you&#8217;ll know better.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Silence followed him &#8211; a<em> long<\/em> silence.<\/p>\n<p>Finally Adam said, &#8220;Pa.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ben was rubbing his forehead.\u00a0 &#8220;Yes, son.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I have something I&#8217;d like to ask you.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What is it?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Adam looked toward the kitchen and sighed.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Never mind,&#8221;
