See you later on.” Joe called as he ran from the house towards the barn with break neck speed.

“JOSEPH! Walk don’t run,” chastised Ben. When he saw that his request had fallen on deaf ear he through his hands up in defeat. “I may as well talk to myself.”

“Was that Joe racing through here?” Hoss asked and scratched his head. “Cain’t recall a time when I’ve ever seen him move so dadburn fast.”

“That was our little brother,” affirmed Adam. He held his fork laden with food in mid air as he spoke. “I don’t think he even tasted his breakfast this morning. Inhaled would best describe how he ate.” When he finished speaking he saw the look that his father was giving him and cocked his head to one side. It was then that he realised that his fork had been blissfully discarding food as his hands had moved in his animated discussion. “Sorry, Pa.” Adam said as he cleared his throat in embarrassment.

“C’mon Cochise we have to move.” Joe urged and gently pressed his heels into his horse. At the familiar mention of his name Cochise’s ears pricked forward and he responded willingly to his rider’s request.

“I’m sorry I’m late,” Joe apologised as he reined Cochise to a halt and dismounted. He stood for a moment his eyes fixed on the woman he loved so dearly. Her beauty was beyond compare. Her eyes danced as she let the warm Spring breeze play with her hair as it glistened in the sun. “Have you been waiting long, Karen?”

“No, not long at all,” Karen replied, her voice like a nightingale and sweet as a mountain spring. She flicked an annoying piece of hair away from her eyes and beckoned Joe to follow her. “Did you have any problems getting away from your family this morning?”

“I didn’t come here to talk about my family, I came to be with you. Now would you indulge me.” There was a hint of mischief in his voice as he smiled and pulled Karen close to him. “Much better.” He added while he caressed her soft skin and ran his index finger over her blood red lips.

As their lips met it was as if they were one, time stood still and the world was theirs to do with what they wanted. Their hearts were filled with love – longing and yearning for each other. Exhilarated by the passion that they had shared, Karen reached forward and brushed one of Joe’s wayward curls aside.

“I’ve loved you from the first time I saw you,” she began and paused as she gathered the strength to tell him what was in her heart. “With the wind blowing softly through your hair, I wanted you mine from that very first moment.” She pressed two of her fingers to his pursed lips silently asking to him to be quiet. “You’re my lover, my companion and a dear friend our future’s together just me and you. I can’t face each day without you. The way you look at me with your eyes of emerald green, the way they sparkle like the mountain dew. When you first smiled at me my doubts and fears miraculously disappeared. It was then that I knew you wanted the same as I did.”

Joe gently removed her fingers from his mouth and delicately kissed them. “Karen, from the moment I saw you I felt the same. My heart is yours forever.”

For the second time they melted into each other’s arms – softly, shyly their lips met. Tenderly at first, then filled with the passion that neither could contain they were once more lost in a lovers’ embrace.

“Do you think we should tell your family about us?” Karen tentatively asked when finally, they pulled apart.

“I think they already know. Well at least I’m sure Pa does.”

“Oh?” She asked, a hint of intrigue in her voice.

Joe grinned and laughed as he ran his fingers through her hair. “Last time when Pa called me in to see him it was just after I returned from seeing you. I didn’t think about it at first when he started to sniff and asked where I had been. I’d forgotten to change my shirt before going to see him and the scent of your perfume was still with me.”

“Did he mind?”

“No. Well at least he didn’t seem to – all he did was nod his head and smile. I guess he was pleased that one of his sons had finally thought about settling down.” Joe paused and took Karen’s hand in his. “Would you like to come with me and meet my family?”

“Joe, I’ve watched your family from afar and have loved each one of them in their own special way. I’m happy to have our rendezvous and keep things the way they are. I hope that you don’t think ill of me, but I’ve seen what happens to any woman who gets to close to a Cartwright male.”

Joe ran his hand across his face and looked perplexed. He thought back at all the seemingly doom fated relationships that his brothers and father had endured. All had ended in tragedy with their loves lost to another man or to the grim hand of death. “Are you saying that my family is cursed when it comes to women?” he finally asked not sure if he wanted to hear the answer.

“In short, my love – yes.” She leaned forward and shared one last tender kiss, before she turned and as silently as she had arrived, she disappeared.

Karen reached with her arms outstretched in supplication to the silver moon that lit the evening sky. The stars danced in the heavens like a myriad of tiny diamonds on display. “I looked at the moon up in the sky, and fell in love with you, my heart and I, you took my hand, you breathed my name and now I know my life will never be the same. I’ll see you next time in my dreams, Little Joe Cartwright.”

I found you a thousand times I guess you done the same
But then we lose each other; It’s like children’s game
As I find you here again, A thought runs through my mind
Our love is like a circle, Let’s go ’round one more time.

THE END

Synopsis: Written for a friend who took up the challenge that she was issued and found that she could weave wonderful stories.
Rating: G
Word Count: 1,150

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false
_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[23

post-27833","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-drama","wpcat-23-id
https://i0.wp.com/bonanzabrand.info/library/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/young-Joe.jpg?fit=160%2C119&ssl=1
["GET
