Hiding in Fear<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The brothers huddled close together; contritely, fearing somehow that their transgression would be discovered.<\/span><\/p>\n

*****<\/span><\/p>\n

With a bowed head, \u201cI shoulda done what Pa said.\u201d His words barely heard.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhy didn\u2019t you?\u201d hissed Adam, his eyes rapidly moving left and right, searching around to make sure they were still hidden from view and that no one had heard them.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI tried, but Joe\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t blame it on Joe,\u201d Adam ordered as his eyes settled on his sibling; not amused at finding themselves in such a situation.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

Hoss crouched close to his eldest brother while Little Joe laid unaware and so helplessly between them.<\/span><\/p>\n

Looking so forlornly, \u201cI\u2019m sorry, Adam.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Placing a hand to his brother’s shoulder, \u201cThat\u2019s okay Hoss. I should have paid more attention myself. I didn\u2019t mean to yell at you. It’s just that… well, today just hasn\u2019t been my day.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

*****<\/span><\/p>\n

The day hadn\u2019t started well for Adam Cartwright; he\u2019d come down to breakfast to find his father placing papers into his saddle bags and already wearing his heavy jacket.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAdam, I\u2019m sorry son, but I need to head over to Carson City and deliver these papers to our attorney. Somehow I lost a day and today is the deadline to bid on that additional one hundred acres. Now, I expect you to be able to handle anything that comes up on the ranch today, as well as handling your brothers\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBut\u2026 Pa\u2026\u201d Adam interrupted.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Buckling the saddlebag fasteners, \u201cAdam, I depending on you, but I really need to get going. Charlie is getting Buck saddled for me. I\u2019ll be back late. You know what to do in my absence.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYes sir,\u201d Adam answered; feeling disappointed that his plans for the day had been changed at the last minute, yet again.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

*****<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIs Little Joe… is he gonna be okay?\u201d Seeing his brother lying so still between them caused Hoss’ voice to tremble.<\/span><\/p>\n

Looking down at his youngest brother’s glassy eyes, \u201cWhat did you give him?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cJust some of JimBob\u2019s berry punch.\u00a0 JimBob said it always calms his stomach.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYOU WHAT?!!”\u00a0 Popping his head up to make sure his startled proclaim didn’t alert anyone to their location, “Where\u2019d you get it from?\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

As the eldest brother, as well as their father’s earlier statement, Adam knew and seriously took his responsibilities to look out for his siblings; he didn’t want to disappoint their father.\u00a0 Yet, how was he to explain how they end up in such a predicament?\u00a0 Would Ben ever allow Adam to manage the ranch in his absence?<\/span><\/p>\n

Realizing he hadn’t been paying attention, “What did you say?”<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAdam, I said, JimBob gave me some a his berry punch the other day, when I weren\u2019t feelin\u2019 no good.\u00a0 Told me not to drink it all in one gulp; just a little now and then when my tummy hurt. I only took a couple a sips and a few minutes later I felt better\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Adam felt his stomach drop.\u00a0 \u201cBut to give it to Joe?!\u201d His eyes grew wide; JimBob’s berry punch wasn’t really punch, but alcohol.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBut Adam, Shortshanks was alookin\u2019 as pukey as I done felt\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Shaking his head, Adam realized it did nothing to reduce his mounting headache, \u201cHoss, babies spit up all the time when they\u2019re teething!\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHow was I supposed ta know?\u201d Awkwardly Hoss continued.<\/span><\/p>\n

“You could have asked.”<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI shore didn\u2019t expect it to come outa both ends\u2026\u201d he pinched closed his nose and looked away as the smells began to waft in his direction.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNevermind\u2026 I\u2019ll finish getting the table and the rug cleaned up and you get Little Joe changed over there.\u201d Adam pointed to the alcove area, where Ben had recently set up as his office area. \u201cDo what Pa said, place a changing cloth underneath him in case he has another accident and a diaper over him so he don\u2019t go shooting all over the place and make more work for me to clean up!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Adam looked up as he heard his name called from the kitchen and he wished he could disappear into the wilderness<\/strong> as he turned to answer, \u201cYes, Marie?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
