Please, Hoss,\u201d begged ten-year-old Little Joe. \u201cIt\u2019ll be fun, lots of fun.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know, Joe. It\u2019s a big undertaking.\u201d Adam looked to his younger brother for support and realized none would be coming from that corner.<\/p>\n<p>Hoss glanced at Joe who was looking at him with his already patented puppy-dog look. \u201cYa know Big Brother, it could be a like Little Joe says. After all you could put that new college education to some use. What with that artic\u2014artox.\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0You know <strong>imagination.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Closing his eyes, Adam shook his head. \u201cI think the word you\u2019re looking for is <strong>artistic.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey even have a <strong>racetrack<\/strong> down C Street. There\u2019s\u00a0 votin\u2019 on diff\u2019rent types. Ya know, like the prettiest, funniest, and <strong>ugliest. <\/strong>You can draw up how it looks, I\u2019ll put all the stuff on it and ride in it too, while Hoss pushes it. Can\u2019t you hear it now? The Cartwright brothers win the first annual <strong>outhouse <\/strong>race. We\u2019ll make history!\u201d The youngest Cartwright pulled out all the stops and used every ounce of charm he had on his oldest brother. He knew he had already won Hoss over when he first mentioned the races. \u201cPlease.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Looking between his two brothers, Adam could do nothing but sigh and give in. \u201cAlright, alright I give up. I\u2019ll start drafting it right after dinner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll go get everything we need.\u201d Joe jumped from the settee and ran out the door before anyone could say \u2018boo!\u2019<\/p>\n<p>They might have stopped him if they knew the precise meaning of his words.<\/p>\n<p>~~~~<\/p>\n<p>Joe finished tying the rope to his saddle horn, making sure the knot was secured. \u201cOkay boy, pull.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Taking hold of the reins, he guided his horse forward until the rope pulled taut. He was so caught up with encouraging his horse that he failed to hear the pounding and shouts that echoed through the air.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCome on, Copper, you can do it. Just a little bit more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A resounding screech of nails being wrenched from wood split the air seconds before an almighty yell resonated from behind him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJOSEPH!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ben Cartwright stood on the wood foundation where their outhouse once stood, his face beet red, eyes blazing, and if it were possible steam would have been blowing out his ears.<\/p>\n<p>Swallowing hard, Joe glanced sheepishly at his father.\u00a0 \u201cUm, hi Pa. Whatcha doin\u2019 in there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat am I doing in here? What the devil do you think I\u2019m doing!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When he saw his father take a step forward, he mounted his horse, his fingers worked urgently to remove the knot before riding away at a gallop.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYOU GET BACK HERE RIGHT NOW, JOSEPH FRANCIS CARTWRIGHT!\u201d bellowed Ben.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSorry Pa, got chores to do.\u201d Joe knew self-preservation was his highest priority. He was certain a tanning was in store for him when he saw his father next, but it wouldn\u2019t be even close to what he would get at the moment if he hung around. \u201cOh boy, I shoulda checked to make sure no one was in there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Chapter End Notes:<\/p>\n<p>As always a huge thank you to Cheaux for being a wonderfui and forgiving beta.
