Ben closed the book he was reading, and Joe\u2019s head popped up, turning his attention from the gun he was cleaning to his eldest brother.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s wrong, Adam?\u201d Ben scrutinized his son; recognizing the flames of indignation burning in his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis,\u201d Adam said as he shook the paper in the air, expecting the others to know what he was alluding to.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUh, and what might this be, Big Brother?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Staring at Joe as if he were daft, Adam suddenly realized he was the only one who could understand what he was ranting about.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s an article in here about how immigrants are still coming over from Europe and other countries as <strong>indentured<\/strong> servants. It even goes on to say that some of the women, the better looking ones, are sold off to be a rich man\u2019s <strong>consort<\/strong>.\u201d Shaking his head in disgust he threw the paper onto the large, square table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t get it, Adam, the north is always going on about the south and slavery, yet that\u2019s happening right in their own backyard. How is it any different?\u201d Joe looked Adam straight in the eye, waiting for an explanation.<\/p>\n<p>Unable to maintain eye contact, Adam looked away and sighed. \u201cIt\u2019s not Joe. They should both be abolished. The problem is, the immigrants come over thinking they only have to work for a specific amount of time, then their contract has been fulfilled and they\u2019re free to do as they please. What they don\u2019t realize is that their <em>kind<\/em> benefactors keep adding time for things that they need. They both need to be-\u201c<\/p>\n<p>Adam was interrupted when the front door almost flew off its hinges and Hoss came charging into the room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPA! Pa, you won\u2019t believe it. Not in a million years,\u201d Hoss yelled as he skidded to a thundering stop behind the settee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHoss, what in tarnation do you think you\u2019re doing?\u201d Ben bellowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPa, you just gotta listen to me.\u201d Hoss hurried around to stand in front of the fireplace in order to see each family member.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJoe, Adam, it was amazin\u2019. I never would of thought something like this was real.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s real? You ain\u2019t makin\u2019 any sense,\u201d said Joe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy don\u2019t you slow down and start from the beginning,\u201d Adam suggested.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe <strong>fairies<\/strong>! I saw a whole parcel of \u2018em down in Pine Hallow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFairies?\u201d Joe repeated, his voice going up an octave or two at the unbelievable announcement his brother had just made.<\/p>\n<p>Adam could only pinch the bridge of his nose and shake his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0You saw <em>what?\u201d<\/em> Ben tried his best to keep a straight face, but the snorts he could hear coming from Joe as he tried to contain his giggles threatened his composure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFairies, Pa,\u201d Joe choked out and lost complete control; his high pitched cackle filled the room.<\/p>\n<p>Unable to stand it any longer, Adam\u2019s velvet-toned laughter joined in with his little brother\u2019s. Seconds later Ben\u2019s deep baritone was added to the mix.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDadburn it! I\u2019m being serious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSure you are, Hoss. The next thing you\u2019re going to tell us is that there are leprechauns running around the Ponderosa with a pot of gold,\u201d snickered Joe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHoss, were there\u2014\u201d Adam had to pause to catch his breath. \u201cWere there <strong>furies <\/strong>too?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHuh?\u201d asked Hoss with a scowl on his face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFuries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are furies, Adam?\u201d Joe asked as he wiped tears of mirth from his face.<\/p>\n<p>Knowing how his family would react to his explanation, Adam cleared his throat and began. \u201cFuries are <strong>beastly<\/strong> things. They first came about in Greek and Roman mythology. They are usually described as three women who represent rage and anger; they\u2019re determined to avenge unpunished criminals\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSounds like the mama\u2019s, of all them Virginia City gals that Little Joe tinkers with,\u201d joked Hoss.<\/p>\n<p>Joe quickly glanced out of the corner of his eye to see his father\u2019s reaction; the smile that was there made him relax a bit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh ha\u2014ha, very funny, Hoss.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat? It\u2019s true,\u201d protested Hoss.<\/p>\n<p>Joe started to rise from the settee, \u201cLook here, Big Brother\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ben cleared his throat and caught the attention of his younger sons, who immediately simmered down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you will, Adam, please continue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Adam\u2019s family didn\u2019t disappoint him. He knew that the furies would lead to some comment about Joe\u2019s romantic habits. \u201cSure, Pa. They became the epitome of the concepts of vindictiveness and retribution, and represented the mental torments associated with a guilty conscience.\u201d Adam paused, raised an eyebrow and smirked at his youngest brother.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s got you there, Son,\u201d joked Ben as he reached out and patted Joe on the knee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo were there?\u201d Joe asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWere there what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat he just said.\u201d He tipped his head towards their older brother to indicate who he was talking about.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHuh?\u201d Hoss had completely lost track of the conversation. \u201cWhat angry mamas?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, furies! Did you see furies and leprechauns in Pine Hollow along with your fairies?\u201d Joe asked, biting his lip to try and stop the laughter from bubbling out again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDadburn your ornery hide! One of these days, Joseph, I\u2019m gonna pound you a good one!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell\u2014\u201d Adam paused for the dramatic effect. \u201cDid you see them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ben saw the flush of anger start at his middle son\u2019s neck and quickly crept all the way up to his hairline. He knew he needed to put a stop to the tom-foolery coming from his oldest and youngest sons.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAdam, Joe, enough. Stop making fun of your brother. If he thinks he saw\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0Saw, um, leper\u2014I mean fairies then that\u2019s\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He just couldn\u2019t do it. The whole idea was so preposterous, it was actually hysterical. Failing to keep his composure, Ben wrapped his arm around his mid-section as he bent over laughing.<\/p>\n<p>Joe was laughing so hard he actually fell off the settee, hitting his head on the square table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOw\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0Fairies!\u201d And he just laughed harder, drawing a mental picture of fairies flying around the hollow.<\/p>\n<p>Adam\u2019s whole persona fell away; he couldn&#8217;t help but add his deep belly laugh to that of his father and Joe\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>Hoss glared at his family before turning around and stomping out the door. A loud, resounding crash resounded through the room as the door was slammed into its frame.<\/p>\n<p>From the barn he could still hear the hyenas that were in the house.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDadburn them!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Chapter End Notes:<\/p>\n<p>Adam&#8217;s explanation of furies comes for wikipedia.
