She didn\u2019t want Papa to know that she was practicing anything. After all, she could barely sit in the saddle a week after one very hard spanking that she gotten after last week\u2019s fiasco at the ice cream parlor. She still couldn\u2019t quite figure out why\u2019d she gotten a spanking. From her perspective, that boy sure needed a punch in the nose. Papa said that the spanking had nothing to do with the fact that she had punched that boy in the nose and had everything to do with deliberate deception. She was still pondering that one. She wasn\u2019t sure\u2026\u2026.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">She caught Joe in the hallway, \u201cJoe, Joe,\u201d she whispered, \u201ccome in here\u2026\u201d she motioned him to come in her room.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Joe eyed her warily. It seemed that every time she started whispering about something, he was getting a sore behind. He came to her door, \u201cWhat?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cJoe, come in here a minute. I need to you to help me with something.\u201d Ellie said stepping back from the door so Joe could step in.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Joe eyed her suspiciously. \u201cWhatever it is, I ain\u2019t doing it.\u201d Said Joe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Ellie pouted, \u201cBut Joe, you don\u2019t even know what I want.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cListen Sissy, every time you ask me to do something lately, I end up with a sore butt. I still can barely sit Cochise after last weekend.\u201d Joe said rubbing his behind for effect.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cJoe Cartwright, you know good and well that if you hadn\u2019t pulled that gun, Papa wouldn\u2019t have known you were gone for so long from the ice cream parlor. Besides, you got a tanning more because of the gun than leaving me at the ice cream parlor.\u201d Ellie huffed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cSissy, I got a whipping for both and I wouldn\u2019t have gotten one if you hadn\u2019t talked me into taking you in the first place.\u201d Joe countered.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cCome on Joe\u2026\u201d Ellie started.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Before Ellie could finish her sentence, there was a knock on the door that was pushed open. Clay stood in the door way. \u201cPa says to get down for breakfast before he comes up and starts swatting..\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Both of the younger Cartwrights sighed and huffed, \u201cShut up Clay!\u201d they said in unison.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Clay looked startled and figured those two were up to something. They marched past him out the door. As each one marched their way by, he gave them a swat. \u201cHeh,\u201d they both yelled, \u201cStop that!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">He just grinned at his baby brother and sister, \u201cYou talk back to me and I\u2019m gonna be doing the swatting.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Both of the children rolled their eyes. Ellie turned around and stuck her tongue out at Clay. Clay saddled up to her and swatted her again, this time a little harder. \u201cCut it out Clay!\u201d she stormed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cMind your manners missy.\u201d He said grinning. Ellie just rolled her eyes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Ellie made her way to the breakfast table. \u201cMorning Papa,\u201d she said giving her father a kiss. She walked around to Adam to give him a kiss, too. \u201cMorning everyone,\u201d she said sliding into her seat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cMorning Pa,\u201d said Joe sliding into his chair.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Pa lifted his face to accept the kiss, but looked at Clay questioningly. \u201cProblem, son?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Clay grinned at his father, \u201cNo sir, took care of everything.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Pa eyed the three of them suspiciously. Something wasn\u2019t quite right. He wasn\u2019t going to start in on them, it was just too early in the morning. The family started in on breakfast. Breakfast was quite a noisy affair with everyone being home. Pa sighed contentedly, he sure loved having all six of the children home at the same time, even if it mean not a moment of peace and quiet. He laughed at himself that he still considered Adam, Will and Clay children. Boy that would raise a ruckus he thought.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Pa assigned jobs and pushed away from the table. He eyed his two youngest. Before anyone could be excused, he asked \u201cJoe, Ellie, what do you plan on doing this afternoon?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cMe, probably nothing seeing as I\u2019ll be out checking the herd today.\u201d Grumped Joe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Pa raised his eyebrows. He guessed Joe\u2019s bottom was still a little sore. \u201cSon, are you complaining?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cNo sir,\u201d Joe said quickly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cI see, well I suspect you can check the North Pasture and be done by lunch if you concentrate on your job. Then, you may have the afternoon free, unless I need to find you some other chores.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cNo sir, Pa, I\u2019m going right now.\u201d Joe said hastily. \u201cMay I be excused?\u201d Joe wasn\u2019t about to mess with Pa this morning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The other boys laughed. They knew that Pa was giving him a little reminder by making him be in the saddle all morning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cYou\u2019re excused.\u201d Pa said as he turned to Ellie, \u201cWell missy what about you?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cI was just going to ride Mariah, Papa.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Pa looked at his daughter. He just had a gut feeling something wasn\u2019t quite right. \u201cDo you need a reminder of the rules and the consequences of breaking them?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">She looked at him curiously. Why was he asking? He didn\u2019t normally ask. \u201cGosh Papa, I know. Are you mad at me? What did I do?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cNothing, I just wanted to remind you.\u201d Pa said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cUmm, ok, no sir, I\u2019m riding along the lake, maybe I\u2019ll sketch or something.\u201d She just looked at her father. How did he always know when she was up to something? Ellie got permission to be excused and went to start on her chores. As she walked past her father, he popped her on the behind. \u201cOww, Papa, why\u2019d you do that?\u201d she said rubbing her behind as she turned toward her father.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">He smiled a little, \u201cJust a reminder young lady, that I expect obedience.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cYes sir.\u201d She said as she headed out the door. Somehow he always knows. She didn\u2019t think that practicing the barrel riding was being disobedient, but she wasn\u2019t going to take any chances. She would just ride up to the lake and sketch and maybe just set up a barrel riding course. She headed for the barn and caught up with Joe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cHeh Joe.\u201d She said as she headed toward Mariah\u2019s stall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cWhat\u2019s a matter Sissy?\u201d he asked as he moved to saddle Cochise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cI don\u2019t know. Papa just swatted my backside and not light, either. He said he was reminding me to be obedient. How does he always know? Besides I wasn\u2019t going to anything I\u2019m not suppose to do any way.\u201d She grumped.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cWell, you were going to do something, weren\u2019t you? What were you going to ask me?\u201d Joe queried looking over Cochise at his sister.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cPromise you won\u2019t tell?\u201d she asked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cSee, there you go Sissy, if you\u2019re asking me not to tell, it\u2019s probably something you\u2019re gonna get in trouble for.\u201d Joe laughed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cThat\u2019s not true!\u201d stormed Ellie stamping her foot. \u201cWell, not exactly any way.\u201d She said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Joe rolled her eyes. She must be wanting to do something pretty bad if she\u2019s stamping her foot. \u201cWhat is it Sissy, what were you wanting me to do?\u201d asked Joe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cI just wanted you to time me? What\u2019s the harm in that?\u201d she responded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cTime you? For what?\u201d Joe asked looking completely baffled.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cI want to practice barrel racing.\u201d Ellie said exasperated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cWhat in the world for?\u201d asked Joe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Ellie was about to tell Joe how there was going to be a barrel racing event at next month\u2019s rodeo and how she was going to sign up, but just then Clay walked in. Darn that Clay, he was getting to be a regular nuisance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cYeah, little sister, why would you need to practice barrel racing?\u201d Clay asked as he entered the barn to saddle his horse, Jake.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cOh shut up and mind your own business, Clay. I wasn\u2019t even talking to you.\u201d Ellie said giving him an ugly look.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Clay walked toward Ellie. There was no way he was putting up with her sass. \u201cStop sassing me little girl or I\u2019m going to swat you a whole lot harder than you got this morning.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Ellie rolled her eyes. \u201cWhatever\u2026\u201d she muttered.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">That did it, Clay loved his little sister, but he was like Adam, he didn\u2019t put up with much sassing or disrespect from Ellie or Joe. However, Joe had learned to reign in his tongue around Clay. After a few good swats from Clay, Joe held his tongue. Clay grabbed Ellie\u2019s arm and landed two very hard swats to her backside. \u201cMind me Ellie, I won\u2019t tolerate your sassing. I\u2019d hate to go have a discussion with Pa.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Ellie got wide eyed, she definitely didn\u2019t want Clay having any discussions with Papa that were likely to turn into a \u201clittle\u201d discussion she\u2019d rather not have with her father. She\u2019d glared at her big brother.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cYou didn\u2019t answer me Ellie, why are you barrel racing?\u201d asked Clay.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Putting her hands protectively across her backside, \u201cWell not that it\u2019s any of your business, but I just wanted to see if I could do it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Clay sighed, \u201cEllie, if Pa heard you talking like that to me like that\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Ellie eyed her brother, \u201cClay, I\u2019m sorry. I just feel like I am being smothered. I\u2019ve got so many of you watching out over me, I feel like I can\u2019t breathe. What\u2019s wrong with barrel racing, any way? Papa never said I couldn\u2019t.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cWell for one, you\u2019re deliberately keeping something from Pa, which was what got you a sore behind last weekend and two, Pa doesn\u2019t like any of us to run the horses full out.\u201d Clay pointed out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cAre you going to tell him?\u201d Ellie asked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cNo, but don\u2019t come running to me if he finds out and gives you another spanking.\u201d Clay said as he finished saddling his horse and took off.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cHe is soooooooo annoying.\u201d Ellie huffed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cWell, maybe,\u201d said Joe, \u201cbut, he does have a point. I tell you what, if you clear it with Pa, I\u2019ll time you, but I ain\u2019t doing it if he don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Ellie looked at Joe thoughtfully. \u201cI don\u2019t know, I\u2019m not sure he would let me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Joe shrugged his shoulder, \u201cWell do what you want, but I\u2019m headed out to get my chores done so I can have a free afternoon. I\u2019ll catch up with you after lunch.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cOk, Joe, see ya later.\u201d said Ellie.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Ellie turned to her assigned chore of cleaning the barn and the tack. As she mucked out the stables, her mind flew to thoughts of barrel racing. When Adam came in the barn, there Ellie stood leaning on the shovel lost in her thoughts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cWell, you don\u2019t seem to be getting much done,\u201d observed Adam.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Ellie nearly jumped out of her skin. \u201cGosh darn it Adam, don\u2019t sneak up on a person like that!\u201d Ellie growled.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cFirst of all I wasn\u2019t sneaking up on you, you were day dreaming. Second, you better watch your mouth, Pa\u2019s likely to over hear you.\u201d Adam said grinning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cI didn\u2019t say anything bad.\u201d Ellie huffed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cUh-huh.\u201d chuckled Adam.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cGo away big annoying brother of mine.\u201d Ellie said swatting at Adam.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Adam advanced on Ellie with an evil grin. \u201cOh, my little annoying sister, someone should teach you some manners.\u201d Adam laughed evilly as he reached to grab her.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cOh and I guess you could, but your just too old and slow,\u201d giggled Ellie as she side stepped Adam. As she side stepped Adam, she ran right into her papa. Strong arms caught her as she lost her balance. She quickly looked up to see her father\u2019s very unamused look on his face. \u201cUm, hi papa.\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cWhat the devil is going on in here?\u201d he barked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cNothing Pa, nothing, Ellie and I were just funning.\u201d said Adam quickly noting his father\u2019s ire.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cDon\u2019t you have chores, young man?\u201d Pa asked glancing at his eldest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cYes sir, off to finish now.\u201d said Adam as he led Sport out of the barn.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cAnd you, young lady?\u201d he asked his youngest looking down upon her.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cYes sir.\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cWell, go on then.\u201d said Pa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cPapa?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cWhat?\u201d he growled.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cUmmm, could you let go of me?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cOh, of course, sorry baby.\u201d said Pa releasing her.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Ellie stepped back giving her Papa a questioning look. \u201cPapa?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cYes?\u201d he asked raising his eyebrows.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cPapa, are you sure you aren\u2019t mad at me? You sure seem to be upset with me today.\u201d Ellie asked as she toed the dirt in front of her.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cNo, baby, really I\u2019m not. I\u2019m just a little out of sorts.\u201d he said as he opened his arms to her for a hug.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Ellie stepped forward to hug her father and let out a sigh. As he released her, he popped her on the behind.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cOww, Papa! What did you do that for? I don\u2019t need another reminder, honest.\u201d Ellie shouted rubbing her stinging behind.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cEarlier language, I heard it all. Finish your chores and I\u2019ll take you to town.\u201d he said smiling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u2018Really?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cYes, really. Now go on.\u201d he said as he turned and walked toward the house.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Ellie smiled. She just laughed at herself. She\u2019d already gotten popped on the behind more times today than she cared to. Somehow papa always knew when she was up to something. But, then again he said he\u2019d take her to town, so he couldn\u2019t really be mad. Ellie set about getting her chores done.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">When Ellie finished her barn chores, she headed for the house. She slammed the door opened, as it bounced off the credenza, she heard, \u201cEleanor Grace Cartwright quit slamming the door.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">She looked sheepishly over at her papa\u2019s desk, \u201cSorry Papa.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cEleanor.\u201d Pa said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Ellie looked over her shoulder as she was racing up the stairs, \u201cSir?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cBath before you change.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cAww, come on Papa, I\u2019ll just wash up in my room.\u201d Ellie said exasperated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cAre you arguing, Eleanor?\u201d Pa asked with his eyebrows raised.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cNo sir, not me.\u201d said Ellie earnestly as she turned around and made her way toward the bath house.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cDress, Ellie.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cDress? How am I going to ride Mariah in a dress? I do get to ride Mariah don\u2019t I? We aren\u2019t taking the buggy are we? Please Papa, can I ride Mariah? How about a riding skirt? Please?\u201d Ellie spewed the questions forth like a thundering volcano.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Pa just laughed at his baby girl, she sure could fire herself up. He held his hand up to forestall any more questions. \u201cEleanor Grace settle down. I hadn\u2019t considered riding into town, but yes, you can ride Mariah and you may wear a riding skirt.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cThanks Papa,\u201d Ellie said as she raced toward the bath house.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cAnd Eleanor..\u201d Pa started.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cSir?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cNo dawdling, you have 30 minutes to get ready if you want to have lunch at the International House.\u201d Pa said as his eyes twinkled. Ellie loved the International House. She would be ready in no time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cYes sir, 30 minutes. I\u2019ll be ready Papa, I promise.\u201d she said excitedly as she raced to the bath house.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Ellie made quick work of taking a bath and washing her hair. She reached for her robe from one of the hooks on the door. She opened the door and was towel drying her hair as she left the bath house. She went through the door in the kitchen and ran right into Hoss. Hoss caught her in his arms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cWhoa little gal, what\u2019s got you so fired up.\u201d Hoss chuckled as he caught his sister in his big arms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cHoss, let me go. Papa said I have 30 minutes to get ready to go to town and I probably have about 10 left. Please Hoss.\u201d she begged.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Hoss burst out laughing, she looked so darned serious. \u201cOk, ok, go on, before you have you a fit.\u201d He said as he pushed her toward the stairs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cHeh, that\u2019s mean. I ain\u2019t having a fit. I just wanted to do what Papa says, I\u2019ve had me enough swats for a whole month and I don\u2019t aim to get any more. Besides Papa said if I could get ready we could have lunch at the International House.\u201d Ellie huffed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Hoss raised his eyebrows. She sure was getting sassy. \u201cSorry, Princess, you just looked like you was on a mission.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cWell I am.\u201d She eyed her brother. \u201cI\u2019m sorry Hoss, I just don\u2019t want to get in any more trouble.\u201d She said reaching over and giving him a quick kiss. \u201cLove ya, Hoss.\u201d she said as she scampered toward the stairs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Hoss just chuckled as he watched the fleeting back of his little sister.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Ellie raced up the stairs and into her room. She heard the grandfather clock strike the quarter hour. Uh oh, she probably had less than 5 minutes to get ready. She quickly shed her robe and pulled her clothes on. She dragged a brush through her hair and put her unruly curls in a clip. Satisfied she looked presentable she ran out of her room and ran smack into Will.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cWhoa, whoa, whoa little girl. Watch where you\u2019re going.\u201d Will exclaimed as he caught her.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cLet me go Will, Papa is waiting and I don\u2019t want to be late.\u201d she said squirming to get away.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Will laughed as he released her.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cSorry Will, luv ya.\u201d she said as she barreled down the stairs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Will just shook his head.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Ellie ran down the stairs, skipping the last three and landing with a thud on the bottom landing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Pa looked over at the stairs and smiled to himself, he knew that once he mentioned the International House, Ellie would be ready in a shot. \u201cEleanor Grace, how many times have I told you not to run on the stairs?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cUm, about a thousand. Sorry Papa, I just didn\u2019t want to be late.\u201d she said hoping that he wasn\u2019t mad enough to not take her to town. She looked at her Papa\u2019s face to see him smiling. She sighed. Whew, that was close.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cOk, young lady, it\u2019s time to go.\u201d he said as he ushered her out the door to Mariah. He swung her up in the saddle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cAw Papa, I don\u2019t need any help.\u201d she said trying to wiggle away.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Pa just smiled at her. A nice long ride to Virginia City was just the right thing to find out what was going on in that mind of hers. He just knew something was up. He just wasn\u2019t sure what. Usually given enough time, Ellie would spill the beans. He swung up on to Buck and started out. Ellie quickly followed behind and then caught up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">For awhile, neither one spoke as they just admired the scenery. Ellie was thinking about her day. She had started her day out with a few swats, then tussling a bit with Adam, then running into Hoss and then into Will. She was worn out. Plus she thought, I did my chores. She was thinking, \u2018I wonder why Papa is taking me to town?\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Ellie eyed her papa. Now was probably as good a time as any to ask about the barrel racing event. Maybe she should wait until lunch. Yeah, that would be better. Papa couldn\u2019t possibly yell in a restaurant full of people, could he?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">They rode quietly until they reached the edge of the city.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cPapa, why are we coming to town? \u201c<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cCan\u2019t I just spend some time with my daughter without having a reason?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cWell, yes Papa, it just seemed a little unusual.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cBesides young lady, I know something is up and I want to find out what it is.\u201d Pa looked at her with a penetrating gaze.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Ellie just gave him a bewildered look.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Pa laughed, that look she gave him was enough for him to know that he was right.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Ellie scowled. How does he always know?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">They arrived at the International House. Ellie swung out of the saddle and tied Mariah to the hitching post. Pa and Ellie walked in and took a table in the back. They chatted about nothing in particular as they looked over the menu. Ellie ordered her favorite chicken dumplings and Pa ordered the trout. Ellie was quiet thinking about how she was going to broach the subject of riding in the Virginia City Rodeo. She was just certain he was going to say \u201cNo.\u201d He was so old fashioned. Adam had already told her that there was no way Papa would allow his daughter to ride in a rodeo. She was still pondering, when she heard, \u201cEleanor Grace, I\u2019m speaking to you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Pa had tried to get her attention numerous times. She was so lost in thought she didn\u2019t hear him. Ellie jumped at hearing her whole name. \u201cYes, sir?\u201d she asked, her automatic response to hearing her whole name.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cWhere were you Ellie, I\u2019ve been talking to you for ten minutes?\u201d Pa asked amused.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cOh, umm, sorry Papa, I was just thinking about how to ask your permission for something.\u201d Ellie said carefully.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cOh and what did you want my permission for?\u201d Pa asked, a puzzled expression crossing his face.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Ellie took a deep breath, \u201cPapa, I want to barrel race in the rodeo. I know I can do it. I know I can beat those boys. Adam said it was a youth event. Youth includes girls doesn\u2019t it? I mean why shouldn\u2019t it? Girls are just as good as boys at riding. Aren\u2019t they Papa. Papa can I do it? Please Papa?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Pa leaned back in his chair and chuckled. My, my she was such a whirlwind. All of that in one breath. How did she manage? He pondered her question. He wondered if girls would even be allowed to participate in the event. Pa steepled his fingers in front of his face and thought.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Ellie eyed her Papa. Well, at least he didn\u2019t say \u201cNo!\u201d right off. He looked like he was thinking about. Maybe she should mentioned the other things that he would allow her to do like entering a sampler or a pie in a contest. Barrel racing was just a different type of contest. \u201cPapa,\u201d she started, \u201cyou\u2019d let me enter a sampler or a pie, it\u2019s not different, it\u2019s just another event\u2026\u201d She stole a look at her Papa, he was still thinking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cUh, Papa?\u201d she asked, her hopeful eyes turned on his.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cYes?\u2019 he asked, looking over his steepled fingers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cMay I, please?\u201d Ellie begged.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cWell, Eleanor, I don\u2019t know. I\u2019m not sure I want my daughter racing in any kind of race. I\u2019m not sure I think it\u2019s appropriate for a young lady to race horses.\u201d he said shaking his head.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cBut, Papa, please\u2026.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cLet me think about it.\u201d he said, effectively closing the subject. Pa thought he would check the rules. Maybe girls couldn\u2019t participate and that would take the heat off of him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cPapa, could I just practice just in case you let me?\u201d Ellie asked plaintively.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cWhy would you want to do that, I\u2019m not sure I see the point.\u201d Pa asked as his eyes settled on his youngest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cPapa, please I just want to see if I can do it. It\u2019s you know, a challenge. I just want to see if I can do it and Joe said he wouldn\u2019t help time me if I don\u2019t have your permission. For some reason he thinks that every time I ask him to do something, he\u2019s getting a whipping\u2026.\u201d Ellie faltered and looked to her father.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Pa chuckled, \u201cWell, I\u2019m not sure that Joseph is making a good choice when agrees to do your bidding. You certainly have your brother wrapped around your little finger, missy.\u201d Pa said tapping her on the tip of her nose.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cI do not!\u201d she said indignantly her face turning red.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cYes you do and do not raise your voice to me young lady.\u201d Pa said as his eyebrow raised in irritation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cYes sir, sorry Papa. Please Papa, can I practice?\u201d Ellie queried.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cLet me think about it. This discussion is over for the time being.\u201d Pa said as the waiter brought their food in and set it down on the table.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cBut Papa\u2026\u201d Ellie started.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cOver, Eleanor. Eat.\u201d Pa said sternly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Ellie sighed into her food. She dug into her chicken and dumplings. At least he didn\u2019t say \u201cNo.\u201d She knew with patience and a little wheedling and some very good behavior, he would at least let her practice. Pa gazed at his daughter while she eating. She certainly was growing up on him. She so wanted to be grown up and he wanted to keep her his little girl forever. He didn\u2019t know about the rodeo. It seemed that women were doing more things that men were doing all the time. She sure had her heart set on this. Well, he\u2019d check the rules with rodeo committee and see if there was anything at all about girls competing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">They finished their meal and were about to leave the table, when Olivia Masterson and her snobby daughter, Priscilla sauntered by. Ellie rolled her eyes. She couldn\u2019t stand Priscilla. Priscilla was the most stuck up girl in school. She was a year older than Ellie. Priscilla was always competing with Ellie for everything, singing at church, getting good grades in school, and friends. Worst of all Priscilla was enamored with Joe. Ellie just thought that was disgusting. Pa noted the eye roll, \u201cEleanor Grace you will be on your best behavior.\u201d Pa whispered meaningfully.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cYes, Papa.\u201d she whispered back.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cOh Benjamin,\u201d Olivia fairly twittered. \u201cHow are you?\u201d sticking her hand out for Pa to take.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cJust fine Olivia. Just fine.\u201d said Pa has he stood to take Olivia\u2019s proffered hand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cYou remember my daughter, Priscilla?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cOf course, nice to see you again Priscilla.\u201d Pa said nodding to her.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cAnd you remember my daughter, Ellie?\u201d Pa asked as he gestured for Ellie to stand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cNice to see you again Mrs. Masterson,\u201d said Ellie and then nodding to Priscilla, \u201cCilla.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Priscilla eyed Ellie\u2019s outfit. \u201cMy name is Priscilla, not Cilla, Ellie. I think shortened names are so immature, don\u2019t you Mr. Cartwright?\u201d she said smiling at Ellie\u2019s Pa. \u201cIt seems to me that one should dress up upon coming to the International House, it\u2019s such a charming little restaurant\u2026.\u201d she continued as her eyes moved up and down Ellie\u2018s body once again. She really gave Ellie the creeps.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Ellie could tell that Papa was getting annoyed and she wanted to get out of that place before she decked Priscilla. She just kept telling herself, best behavior, best behavior, rodeo, rodeo, rodeo\u2026 \u201cUh, Papa look at the time, aren\u2019t you suppose to meet, um, um Sheriff Coffee in 15 minutes?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cAh, yes Ellie, you are absolutely correct. We must be going. Good day Olivia, Priscilla.\u201d Pa said as he pushed away from the table. Pa grabbed Ellie\u2019s elbow and escorted her out of the restaurant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cOh my goodness, I can\u2019t stand her Papa.\u201d Ellie breathed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cEleanor, shush, don\u2019t talk about people like that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cBut Papa, she is so rude and obnoxious. She is always trying to show me up at school and church. I just hate her.\u201d Ellie fumed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cHate is a strong word little girl.\u201d Pa admonished.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cI\u2019m sorry, but that\u2019s how I feel. She and her mother are only nice to us because you\u2019re rich. Mrs. Masterson wants you to give your business to her husband that owns the other bank.\u201d Ellie huffed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cWho said we were rich?\u201d asked Pa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cWell, I heard Cilla, oh excuuuuusssssssseeeeeeeee me, Priscilla said it to some other girls at school.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cEleanor Grace, stop sassing.\u201d Pa said clearly frustrated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cSorry\u2026\u201d Ellie said, her eyes just boiling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cEleanor, that will be enough.\u201d Pa said sternly shaking his finger at her.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cYes, sir,\u201d she scowled.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cBy the way, good save, I mean about the meeting with Sheriff Coffee.\u201d he said smiling as he winked at her.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Ellie smiled and linked her arm in his as they walked out of the restaurant. \u201cPapa, what about the rodeo?\u201d she asked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Pa smiled down at his youngest, \u201cEllie, please be patient. I need to talk to the rodeo committee to even see if girls can compete. Give me a little time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Ellie frowned, \u201cBut Papa\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Pa stopped. \u201cEleanor, what\u2019s the problem? If you can\u2019t be patient, I\u2019ll just tell you \u201cNo\u201d now.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cNo sir, please Papa.\u201d Ellie took a breath. \u201cPapa, the head of the rodeo committee is Priscilla\u2019s father. He\u2019d tell you girls aren\u2019t allowed just to make Priscilla happy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cOh that\u2019s ridiculous, how can a grown man sworn to abide by the rules, let his little girl tell him what to do? Well, I\u2019ll just ask for a copy of the rules and I won\u2019t mention you riding. Alright?\u201d he asked, his eyes trying to read Ellie\u2019s face.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Ellie just nodded her ascent. She had a bad feeling in her gut that Priscilla \u201cthe snob\u201d would some how find out and mess this up for her. Ellie sighed. \u201cWhere are we going?\u201d she asked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cWell to see Sheriff Coffee of course. I\u2019m not going to make a liar out of you.\u201d Pa chuckled. Ellie grinned. She loved going to see Uncle Roy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">They walked into the sheriff\u2019s office. \u201cWell, well, look who the cat drug in?\u201d he smiled. \u201cHow\u2019s my favorite girl?\u201d Roy asked as Ellie stepped into his open arms for hug.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cHi Uncle Roy. I\u2019m ok, I guess.\u201d she said looking around the jail. \u201cUmm, Papa, may I go to Mr. Callahan\u2019s? Roy turned to Pa, \u201cMy, my Ben she\u2019s really growing up.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Pa frowned, \u201cYeah and I hate it. I wish she would stay my baby forever.\u201d he muttered. He sighed as he turned toward his best friend. \u201cDo you know what she wants to do now?\u201d he demanded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Roy chuckled. I\u2019m hoping the rules say its just for boys, so I can get off the hook with making that decision. It\u2019s awfully important to her.\u201d Pa said as he stroked his chin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cWell, for what it\u2019s worth, I\u2019d let her do it. She\u2019s going to try to find a way around you if you don\u2019t. At least you know what she\u2019d be up to.\u201d said Roy grinning like a fool.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cLike I said, you\u2019re a big help.\u201d Pa huffed. \u201cWell, I\u2019m going to run over to the bank and get a copy of the rules from Mr. Masterson. I hear he is the head of the rodeo committee.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cNo need Ben, I got me a copy right here.\u201d said Roy pulling a sheet out of his desk. \u201cMe being the sheriff and all, I need to know the rules.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cMay I borrow that Roy? I\u2019d like to read it at home when it\u2019s calm and peaceful.\u201d Pa asked as he reached for the paper.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cSure Ben.\u201d said Roy handing it over.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Pa humphed at Roy, \u201cWell, I\u2019m going to collect Ellie and head on home. See you later, Roy.\u201d He said as he turned toward the office door. Pa walked down to Callahan\u2019s. As Pa walked in the store, he saw Ellie leaning on the counter talking to David Callahan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">David waived to his friend. \u201cAfternoon Ben. I\u2019ve just been talking to Ellie, here. She was telling all about the barrel racing event. I\u2019ll just bet she can beat the pants off all those boys.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Ellie shot Mr. Callahan a grateful glance. Then she turned to greet her father and caught \u201cthe look\u201d. The look was one that promised a very stern lecture and possibly a couple of swats. She gulped. She wasn\u2019t exactly sure what she\u2019d done wrong. \u201cUmm, hi papa?\u201d she ventured.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cGood afternoon David. Eleanor, are you ready to go home?\u201d Pa asked as he turned toward Ellie.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Uh oh she thought, he said \u201cEleanor\u201d instead of \u201cEllie\u201d. She knew she just better go. \u201cYes sir.\u201d she said softly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cWell come along then.\u201d said Pa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Ellie hurried out the door. She followed her father to the stables and silently got on Mariah. She stole a look at her papa, he still looked angry. Wisely, Ellie didn\u2019t say much. She had a sinking feeling in her stomach. She was almost on the verge of tears. She didn\u2019t know what she had done to make papa so angry. When they were halfway home, she finally blurted out, \u201cPapa, why are you angry?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Pa eyed Ellie, \u201cDid you tell Mr. Callahan you were riding in that barrel racing event?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cNo sir, I didn\u2019t. Really Papa. I just told him all about the event and that I had asked permission, but you hadn\u2019t given me permission one way or the other. Honest Papa.\u201d she pleaded. \u201cPapa, please don\u2019t be angry.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cI\u2019m not angry Ellie, not really. I just wish you would think before you speak. I wanted to look at the rules and think about it before the whole town starts giving me their opinion on whatever decision I make.\u201d Pa sighed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cBut Papa, I didn\u2019t say I was. I\u2018m sorry Papa, I didn\u2018t mean to speak out of turn.\u201d Ellie said as she fiddled with Mariah\u2019s reins.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cI know, I know. Well, Roy gave me a copy of the rules and I will look at them when we get home and I don\u2019t want to hear another word about it. Understood?\u201d He said glancing at her.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cYes sir, understood.\u201d Ellie agreed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">They rode in companionable silence on the way home. Ellie was happy for the silence, she spent the entire trip day dreaming about how she would ride those barrels and win the race. Before she knew it they were home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cEllie? Ellie? Ellie? ELEANOR GRACE CARTWRIGHT!!!\u201d Pa shouted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Ellie practically fell off of Mariah. Wide-eyed she stared at him. \u201cYes, Papa? Why are you shouting?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cBecause I said your name 3 times and you didn\u2019t so much as blink.\u201d Pa huffed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cSorry Papa, I was day dreaming.\u201d she said sheepishly, having been caught yet again not paying attention to her father. She hoped he wasn\u2019t irritated enough to start swatting or restrict her to her room.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cWell, I don\u2019t know where your mind is young lady. But, I want you to groom the horses before you come in.\u201d Pa said as he rolled his eyes heavenward.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cYes, sir.\u201d she said as she dismounted and grabbed both Buck and Mariah\u2019s reins. Ellie sighed. Papa was looking for divine intervention again. She was perilously close to the line of trying her father\u2019s patience. She vowed in her mind to listen the rest of the day and quit day dreaming. Well, she was going to try anyway.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Ellie entered the barn to find Joe grooming Cochise. \u201cHeh Joe, watch ya doing? I thought you were going fishing or something with your free afternoon?\u201d Ellie asked as she led Buck into his stall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cWell Sissy, I was thinking I could help you with the barrel racing event.\u201d Joe said grinning like a fool.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Ellie eyed him suspiciously. Why did he change his mind so suddenly. She knew something had to be up. Joe was her very best friend in the whole world, but he had seemed so set against it in the morning. \u201cWell, \u201c she said slowly, \u201cI really want to do it, but what changed your mind? You sure didn\u2019t want to help this morning.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cWell, I figure if I help you, you give me part of the prize money if you win.\u201d Joe said still grinning like a fool.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Ellie smiled. Her brother sure had a knack for scamming money off the other brothers. She didn\u2019t even care about the prize money, which she had totally forgotten about, she just wanted to win. But, she didn\u2019t want to let Joe get the best of her. \u201cOk Joe, how much?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cUmm, I think 25% of your winnings would be fair.\u201d Joe said. Joe knew that she didn\u2019t really care about the money. But heck, he might as well get something for helping this time. He was pretty sure, some how, some way, he\u2019d end up with a sore butt for this.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cUmm, 25%, huh, I guess that\u2019s ok.\u201d Ellie said nodding her head. Joe walked around to Buck\u2019s stall to shake on the deal. Ellie just grabbed him and gave him a kiss.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cThanks Joe, it really means a lot to me, you know.\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cI know Sissy, I know. I just want a get a little something for my trouble since I probably won\u2019t be sitting down when this is over with.\u201d Joe said smiling at her.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Ellie thought for a minute. Joe must think Papa is going to find out and tan him for something. But Papa hadn\u2018t said yes or no one way or the other. So, why would Joe think he was going to get in trouble? She would just have to think on that one some. \u201cOh yeah, Joe. I forgot to tell you. I asked Papa for permission to ride in the event and practice.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Joe gulped. It was one thing to help Ellie when Pa didn\u2019t know. So, he wouldn\u2019t be disobeying. But if Pa knew and said, \u201cNo!\u201d, he was definitely going to end up with a sore butt. \u201cSissy, what did he say? It\u2019s one thing for us to do something when Pa don\u2019t know, but it\u2019s something else if he says \u201cNo\u201d and we do it anyway.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Ellie looked at Joe and sighed. \u201cPapa got a copy of the rules and said he would look at them. He said he would think about it. So, he didn\u2019t say \u201cNo\u201d right off.\u201d she looked at her brother, pleading with him with her eyes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Joe sighed. \u201cWell, let\u2019s wait and see what he says. We can at least practice. What he don\u2019t know won\u2019t hurt him.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cOk,\u201d Ellie agreed. \u201cHeh Joe, will you help me with Buck and Mariah?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cSure.\u201d Joe said, \u201cI\u2019ll take Buck, you get Mariah.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Joe and Ellie finished up with the horses and headed for the house. As they headed for the house, Ellie turned to Joe. \u201cJoe, will you take me swimming? I\u2019m all hot and sweaty. Papa still won\u2019t let me go by myself.\u201d she said disgustedly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cI guess, let\u2019s ask.\u201d said Joe as he opened the door to his father standing in the door way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cAsk about what?\u201d queried Pa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cEllie wants me to take her swimming.\u201d Joe said looking for a nod of approval.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cEllie did you finish with the horses? That was awful fast. Joseph, did you finish your chores?\u201d Pa asked swinging his gaze from one child to the other.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cPapa, Joe helped me with Buck.\u201d Ellie said quickly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cYes Pa, I finished my chores. You said I could have the afternoon free if I finished my chores.\u201d Joe reminded him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Pa eyed his two youngest, \u201cSo I did, so I did Joe. Ok, you can go swimming. I want you back by supper, understood?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cYes sir,\u201d they shouted as they ran up the stairs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cQuit running on the stairs,\u201d Pa called after them. He chuckled and shook his head as he grabbed a book and headed for his chair.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Joe and Ellie ran into their rooms to grab some old clothes to go swim in. Ellie ran past Hoss\u2019 room. Hoss was taking a snooze. \u201cHeh Hoss, want to go swimming?\u201d Ellie asked breathlessly as she shook her biggest brother.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Hoss yawned and stretched as he stood up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cPlease Hoss, just you, me and Joe. You know, like when I was just a kid and you\u2019d take me and Joe.\u201d Ellie asked casting her big green eyes at her brother. Ellie really wanted to spend time with just Hoss and Joe. Hoss was so much easier going than Adam, Clay and Will. Sometimes, she was just overwhelmed with her \u201cnew brothers\u201d and Adam was so strict sometimes. Sometimes she still got scared in the water. She always felt safer when Hoss was there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Hoss chuckled. \u201cJust a kid\u201d, he thought. She\u2019s still just a kid. She was still just a baby to him. Thirteen or not, she was still just a baby to him. \u201cSure, princess, I\u2019ll go.\u201d he grinned.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Ellie flung her arms around his middle, well as much as his middle as she could cover. \u201cThanks Hoss, I love ya bunches.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Hoss just smiled, that baby sister of his was a ball of fire. It didn\u2019t take much to make her happy. Hoss grabbed his old pants for swimming and headed down stairs to meet everyone. \u201cHeh, Pa.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cWhere you going with those?\u201d asked Pa curiously pointing to Hoss\u2019 old clothes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cAw, I thought I\u2019d go swimming with the youngins. You know sometimes Ellie still gets a little scared of the water and Joe will just take off swinging on that rope.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Pa nodded his head in approval as the two youngest Cartwrights came bounding down the stairs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cReady Hoss?\u201d asked Ellie.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cYep, princess, let\u2019s go.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Ellie turned around to see her father. \u201cBye Papa.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cBye Pa,\u201d said Joe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cBack before dinner, you three,\u201d Pa said to a closing door. He just chuckled and went back to reading his book.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The three made it up to the lake in no time. Ellie shucked her clothes down to her drawers, but then put a sleeveless shirt of Hoss\u2019 over them. Hoss\u2019 shirt was so long, it was almost as if she had a dress on. The boys went behind the bushes to change. The boys came out bare chested and in cut off pants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cRace ya in,\u201d yelled Joe as he took off for the lake.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Hoss and Ellie laughed at Joe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cHe\u2019s crazy.\u201d said Ellie shaking with laughter as she watched Joe take a dive under the water.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Ellie walked toward the shore and waded in up to her chest. Joe called to her, \u201cSwim over here, Sissy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Ellie shook her head smiling. \u201cNo thanks big brother, I think I\u2019ll stay where I can touch the bottom.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Hoss came up behind her and picked her up and starting walking toward Joe. Ellie\u2019s heart began to race. \u201cHoss, please don\u2019t. I don\u2019t want to go that deep. Please?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Hoss could feel her start to tremble. \u201cBaby, what\u2019s the matter? I\u2019ve got you. You know how to swim.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cHoss, please?\u201d she whispered.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Hoss shook his head. \u201cOk baby, it\u2019s alright I\u2019ll take you back.\u201d Hoss took her back to where the water was only up to her chest. \u201cYou ok?\u201d he asked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cYeah, yeah, I really am. I don\u2019t know Hoss, the deep water just scares me.\u201d she said calming herself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cWell, if you\u2019re ok, I\u2019m going to swim over to where Joe is. You sure?\u201d he asked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cYep, sure as shooting.\u201d said Ellie giving him a small smile.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Hoss shook his head and swam over to Joe. \u201cJoe, you know she\u2019s scared of the water still. I wonder why she\u2019s so scared? I sure thought she was getting better about that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Joe kinda grinned, \u201cWell,\u201d he said scratching his head, \u201cI may have goofed that up last time I took her swimming.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cWhat do ya mean Joe?\u201d Hoss said evenly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cI convinced her to swing on the rope and I told her I\u2019d catch her and I sorta missed. She got scared before she realized that she could swim. I got to her real quick, but she was already scared.\u201d Joe said sheepishly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cDad burn it Joe, that was a fool thing to do.\u201d Hoss said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cI know, I know.\u201d said Joe shaking his head. \u201cHeh, you ain\u2019t gonna tell Pa are ya?\u201d Joe asked worriedly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cNaw, if she wanted him to know, she would\u2019ve already spoken to him.\u201d Hoss said splashing Joe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">An all out splash was started. There was so much laughing and carrying on, Ellie wanted to join in. But there was no way that she was going in any place she couldn\u2019t stand. She eyed the boys wistfully. Hoss was breathing hard and Joe was still giggling, when Hoss called a halt to the water fight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cCome\u2026.on\u2026.Joe,\u201d Hoss breathed, \u201cgive it a rest..\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Hoss headed toward Ellie. \u201cHeh, princess why the long face.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Ellie threw a smile at him, \u201cAw, you looked like you were having so much fun, I just wanted to join in.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cWell why didn\u2019t you? You know how to swim baby and I would\u2019ve been right there.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Ellie was shaking her head, \u201cI don\u2019t know Hoss, I just can\u2019t, the water just scares me too much.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Hoss just raised an eyebrow to her, \u201cWell come on, it\u2019s probably time to head on home.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cAww come on Hoss, just a little while longer, Papa said be home by supper. It doesn\u2019t seem like we\u2019ve been gone very long.\u201d Ellie pleaded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cNaw, come on it\u2019s time to go. We\u2019ve been here longer than you think.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Ellie scowled.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Hoss eyed his baby sister. \u201cI said \u2018No\u2019 Ellie and I meant it. Come on, you need to mind me, now.\u201c Hoss said as he turn to holler for Joe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cBut, Hoss\u2026.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cEllie!\u201d Hoss growled.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Ellie looked at Hoss. Hoss hardly ever swatted her, but he had that \u2018one more word and I\u2019ll swat your bottom\u2019 look on his face. Ellie just conceded by coming out of the water and heading behind the bushes to change her clothes. Joe and Hoss were finished getting ready when Ellie came out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cCome on, you two.\u201d said Hoss as he mounted Chubby.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Hoss rode ahead. Joe and Ellie mounted their horses. Ellie turned to Joe, \u201cHeh Joe, can we start practicing the barrel racing tomorrow?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Joe eyed Ellie, \u201cI don\u2019t know Sissy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cHow come?\u201d she asked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cWell has Pa said you can\u2019t, yet?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cNo, he hasn\u2019t said yes or no, he said he\u2019d read the rules and think about it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cWell, I guess if he hasn\u2019t said one way or the other, practice can\u2019t hurt anything.\u201d said Joe thoughtfully. \u201cBut, I\u2019m telling you Sissy, if Pa says no practicing we\u2019re stopping. Remember it\u2019s a whole different story if he don\u2019t say one way or the other, but if he says \u201cno\u201d and we still do it, Pa\u2019ll nail our hides to the wall.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cOk Joe.\u201d she agreed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Hoss turned around and looked at his little brother and sister, \u201cYa\u2019ll quit that lollygagging and come on.\u201d he shouted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Joe looked toward Hoss, \u201cJeez, what\u2019s up with him?\u201d groused Joe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cDon\u2019t know, but he gave me one of those looks a little while ago.\u201d Ellie answered.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cWhat look?\u201d asked Joe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cYou know, Joe, the one that says he going to start swatting behinds. You know how he gets. His eyebrows go together and he just gets that look, you know\u2026.\u201d she said demonstrating by trying to furrow her eyebrows.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Joe just busted out laughing. Hoss rode up to the pair. \u201cJust what are you laughing at Little Joe?\u201d he asked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cNothing brother, nothing\u2026\u201d Joe laughed as he gasped for breath.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Hoss gave the two a disapproving stare, \u201cPa\u2019s gonna have our hides if we don\u2019t get back and get cleaned up for supper.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cWe\u2019re coming Hoss, we\u2019re coming.\u201d said Ellie still laughing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Fortunately for the three, the arrived just in time to clean up for supper. Supper was a lively affair. Everyone was home and talking all at once. Pa sent Joe and Ellie out to the barn to clean up their horses, since they didn\u2019t have time before supper.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cSo Joe, just where do you think the best place to practice is?\u201d asked Ellie.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cI don\u2019t know Sissy. We need somewhere flat. Do you know how far apart the barrels need to be? We\u2019re gonna have to find someway to haul barrels so no one knows.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cGosh Joe, I don\u2019t know. Papa has a copy of the rules. I don\u2019t know if the measurements are in the rules. I\u2019m not sure I want to ask Papa for a copy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cWhy not?\u201d asked Joe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cWell, he might think I\u2019m pestering him. Or what if he\u2019s decided to say no? I\u2019d just rather practice before he says \u201cyes\u201d or \u201cno\u201d, then we wouldn\u2019t be disobeying, well not exactly any how.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Joe\u2019 eyebrows went up, \u201cWhat\u2019d ya mean \u201cwe\u201d?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cWell you\u2019re helping me aren\u2019t you?\u201d she asked quizzically.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cYeah, I guess if one of us gets in trouble, the other one will too.\u201d Joe said mournfully.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">In the mean time, Pa was sitting at his desk looking at the rodeo rules while Ellie and Joe were in the barn. He was muttering to himself. Hoss was playing checkers with Clay. Adam and Will were reading. Adam looked around the room at his other brothers and his cousin. They all just shrugged their shoulders. Tempting fate, Adam decided to soldier on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cPa, pa, what\u2019s the matter Pa?\u201d Adam asked exasperated from the noise. Pa didn\u2019t even flinch.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cPa?\u201d said Adam a bit louder.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Pa looked over, \u201cWhat is it son?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cYou, you\u2019re making so much noise muttering over there, I can\u2019t hear myself think.\u201d Adam complained. The other boys just snickered. Adam shot them withering glares.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cYeah Pa,\u201d ventured Hoss, \u201cwhat\u2019s got you so tied up in knot?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cYour sister wants to participate in the barrel racing event in the rodeo.\u201d Pa declared.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The boys starting laughing. Adam just grinned. \u201cAnd?\u201d Adam asked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cAin\u2019t that for boys?\u201d asked Hoss.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cShe\u2019d probably beat the pants off the boys.\u201d said Will guffawing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Clay was laughing so hard he was crying.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Just then Joe and Ellie came in. They looked around the room. Everyone was laughing, except for Adam, who was grinning like a jackass and Pa who looked very frustrated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Joe and Ellie looked at each other bewildered. \u201cUhhh, what\u2019s so funny?\u201d asked Joe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cOur little princess wants to compete in the rodeo.\u201d smirked Adam.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Joe shrugged his shoulders. \u201cSo, she\u2019d probably win.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Ellie looked from face to face, all her brothers except Joe were laughing. Ellie\u2019s mood deflated. She felt like everyone was making fun of her. The tears starting streaming down her face. She turned and fled up the stairs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Joe glared at them all. \u201cAh jeez, you idiots, you made her cry.\u201d Joe huffed as he turned toward the stairs after Ellie.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Pa stopped him, \u201cJoseph, stay right here. I\u2019ll attend to your sister.\u201d Pa said as he stood and made his way toward the stairs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Joe glared at his father. \u201cI\u2019m sure she don\u2019t want you of all people.\u201d Joe sneered.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Pa eyed his youngest son, \u201cThat will be enough Joseph unless you would like to continue this conversation in the barn.\u201d Pa said evenly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cPa, that ain\u2019t fair. You\u2019re the one who upset her along with these yahoos and I\u2019m just sticking up for her and you want to tan me?\u201d Joe asked indignantly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cJoseph, I will not tolerate disrespect in this house. You can state your opinion without being disrespectful.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Joe was still glaring.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cYou have about 30 seconds to correct yourself, young man.\u201d Pa stood there staring at Joe with his thumbs hooked in his belt loops tapping on his belt buckle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Joe swallowed. He looked at his feet and then back to his Pa tapping that belt buckle. He knew he had crossed the line. He took a big breath, \u201cI\u2019m sorry Pa. I\u2019m sorry I was disrespectful. I just don\u2019t want Ellie to cry.\u201d he mumbled.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Pa nodded. He turned away to head up the stairs to take care of his daughter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Adam watched his father head up the stairs. \u201cClose call little brother, close call.\u201d Adam smiled.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cOh shut up Adam, you\u2019re the one who started this any how. There ain\u2019t nothing wrong with Ellie wanting to do that event. If you weren\u2019t so darn all high and mighty\u2026\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Adam interrupted him, \u201cJoe, you\u2019ll be taking that walk out to the barn with me\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Joe leveled him with a stare, \u201cIt\u2019s important to her Adam, why can\u2019t you understand that?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cI\u2019m sorry Joe, I didn\u2019t know.\u201d said Adam quietly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cI ain\u2019t the one you should be apologizing to.\u201d said Joe looking Adam in the eye. Joe turned and walked to the front door. He open the door and slammed it as he headed for the barn. Whew, thought Joe. I don\u2019t know what got into me. Imagine all that ruckus because Ellie was crying. For some reason he just felt protective of Ellie at that moment. He also thought, I just knew this was going to somehow get me a licking\u2026..<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Meanwhile, Pa had headed upstairs. He stopped in front of Ellie\u2019s door. He heard sniffling. He tapped on the door, then opened it, not waiting for a reply. \u201cEleanor\u2026\u201d he said as he walked toward her bed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Ellie looked up at her father questioningly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Pa sat down on her bed and held his arms open to her. She immediately sat up and leaned into her father\u2019s embrace. He patted her back and soothed her and waited for the storm to pass.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cEleanor, the boys were just teasing you. They didn\u2019t mean any harm. Why is this so important to you?\u201d asked Pa as he pulled back from her and cupped her chin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Ellie shrugged her shoulders. \u201cI don\u2019t know Papa, it just is. Haven\u2019t you ever wanted something without really knowing why?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Pa just shook his head, \u201cI suppose so.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cPlease Papa, do I have permission?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cWell, I\u2019ve read the rules and I don\u2019t see anything against allowing girls to compete. So, I guess you have my permission. We can go to town and register you tomorrow.\u201d Pa conceded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Ellie\u2019s eyes lit up. \u201cReally Papa? Oh, thank you!\u201d Ellie said as she jumped into his arms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cYou\u2019re welcome.\u201d said Pa. He paused as he heard the clock downstairs chime 9:00 pm. \u201cEllie, it\u2019s getting late. Time for you to go to bed. I\u2019ll see you in the morning.\u201d he said as he kissed her good night. Pa left her to get ready for bed and headed for the great room. He approached the rest of his children.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cAll right boys, I gave Ellie permission to ride in the event. I don\u2019t want you to make fun of her any more. I don\u2019t know why, but this is very important to her.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cPa, you can\u2019t be serious?\u201d asked Adam.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cSon, I\u2019m perfectly serious. We need to let her grow up a bit.\u201d said Pa smiling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Adam shook his head.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cAdam, I want you to take her into town to register tomorrow. You\u2019ll need to see Mr. Masterson, he\u2019s the head of the rodeo committee.\u201d Pa said looking his eldest in the eye.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cBut, but why me?\u201d Adam sputtered.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cBecause I\u2019m asking you to support your sister.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Adam sighed in disgust.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cAdam, do you have a problem?\u201d asked Pa evenly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Adam shook his head, \u201cNo sir.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cGood, then it\u2019s settled. Good night boys.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Pa heard a chorus of \u201cGood night, Pa, Uncle Ben.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The next morning, all were assembled at breakfast. Ellie was toying with her food, even after being reminded by Pa to eat. \u201cEleanor Grace, if I have to remind you to eat again, you will not register for the rodeo.\u201d Pa admonished.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Ellie dropped her fork. \u201cOh, I\u2019m sorry Papa.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cWell hurry up and finish so Joe can see you to school. Adam will pick you up and take you to Mr. Masterson to register.\u201d Pa said taking another sip of coffee.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cMr. Masterson?\u201d Ellie exclaimed. \u201cCan\u2019t I register without seeing him?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cNo, those are the rules. The committee chair takes all registrations not completed on registration day, which was last week.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Ellie deflated, she just knew that some how, some way. Priscilla Masterson was going to cause a problem. She finished her breakfast. \u201cMay I be excused?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Pa nodded his ascent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cCome on Joe, you ready?\u201d she asked as she headed for the door.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cComin\u2019\u201d said Joe as he took a swipe at his face with his napkin. Pa growled at him as he stood up. \u201cOh yeah, may I be excused?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Pa nodded his ascent once again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Joe pushed back his chair and high tailed it for the door. He caught up with Ellie in the barn. \u201cHeh Sissy, what\u2019s wrong? Pa said you could compete.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cYeah, but I didn\u2019t know I was going to have to register with Mr. Masterson. With my luck, Priscilla the Prissy will be standing right there telling her Papa that girls shouldn\u2019t register. She\u2019s just going to ruin everything.\u201d Ellie huffed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cOh, for Pete\u2019s sake girl. Quit getting yourself in a knot. You don\u2019t know that. Jeez, don\u2019t be so negative.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cYou don\u2019t understand, Joe, Priscilla hates me.\u201d Ellie threw at him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Joe rolled his eyes. \u201cGirls!\u201d he muttered to himself. \u201cCome on, let\u2019s get going. Pa\u2019s got me a mountain of chores to do when I get home.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The two took off for school. Joe dropped Ellie at school and headed home to his chores. The day was long and boring for Ellie. Ms. Jones had called on her twice. Ellie hadn\u2019t even known what subject they were on. The whole class snickered when Ms. Jones threatened to send a note home the next time Ellie was caught not paying attention. Finally, Ms. Jones rang the school bell and Ellie was released from her prison. The butterflys in her stomach were going full board. She went outside to wait for Adam. While she was waiting, her best friend Marybeth approached.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cHeh Ellie.\u201d Marybeth greeted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cHeh Marybeth.\u201d Ellie returned.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cEllie, what\u2019s got you so down. You didn\u2019t want to sit together at lunch or recess. Are you mad at me?\u201d Marybeth asked as she toed the dirt with her shoe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Ellie looked at her friend surprised. \u201cOh no, Marybeth. Of course I\u2019m not mad at you. I\u2019m sorry you thought so. I didn\u2019t realize I was acting like that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cWell, something\u2019s wrong.\u201d her friend pressed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Ellie then spilled the whole story. The story about the barrel riding, asking her Papa, waiting for an answer, the boys laughing it up at her expense, getting permission and then finding out that she had to register with Mr. Masterson.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cOh, no wonder\u2026\u201d said Marybeth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cYou know Cilla, Marybeth. She\u2019d do anything to convince her Papa that I shouldn\u2019t ride.\u201d Ellie said dejectedly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cBut Ellie, you don\u2019t even know that Cilla will be at the bank when you go register.\u201d said Marybeth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cYes I do. She goes to the bank everyday after school and waits with her father until the bank closes at 5.\u201d Ellie countered.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cOh, I see what you mean.\u201d Marybeth agreed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Just then Adam rode up. Ellie grabbed her books and said goodbye to Marybeth. \u201cHeh Adam.\u201d she greeted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cHeh yourself little girl.\u201d said Adam as he swung off Sport and tied him to the hitching post in front of the school. \u201cLet\u2019s go register you for that rodeo.\u201d said Adam.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Adam and Ellie took off for the bank. Ellie was apprehensive as they approached the bank. As they entered the bank, Ellie took a look around and noticed Priscilla was sitting in her father\u2019s office. It took Adam a few minutes to get Mr. Masterson\u2019s attention.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cWell, well, what can I do for the Cartwright\u2019s today.\u201d beamed Mr. Masterson.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cWe need to fill out some registration forms for the rodeo.\u201d said Adam.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Mr. Masterson frowned a bit. He had been hoping for a little business with the Cartwrights, even though they banked elsewhere. He recovered himself quickly. \u201cCertainly, certainly.\u201d he said as he bustled off to get the forms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">He handed the forms to Adam and gestured to an empty desk, \u201cYou can fill them out right over there.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Priscilla approached Ellie, \u201cWell, hi Eleanor.\u201d she said sweetly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Ellie wanted to gag. \u201cUm hi, Priscilla.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cSo what are you doing here, I thought your family banked at the other bank in town.\u201d asked Priscilla.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cWe\u2019re here to fill out rodeo forms.\u201d said Ellie.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cOh, and are your big brothers competing? The she burst out laughing. \u201cYou, you, you\u2019re kidding right? Young ladies do not compete in the rodeo.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cReally Papa, ask Mr. Cartwright.\u201d Priscilla giggled.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Adam had heard the whole exchange. He looked at Mr. Masterson. \u201cI\u2019m afraid it\u2019s true Mr. Masterson, the forms are for Ellie. She wants to compete in the youth event. The barrel racing event.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cI\u2019m sorry Mr. Cartwright, the event is for boys. We don\u2019t allow young ladies to compete in the rodeo. She is more than welcome to enter her baked goods or sewing items in those events.\u201d huffed Mr. Masterson.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cWell, I do agree with you that it is a bit unusual for a young lady to compete in the riding events. But, I don\u2019t see anything specifically in the rules that prohibit young ladies from competing in the youth riding events.\u201d said Adam as he leaned back in his chair and folded his arms across his chest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cI\u2019m sorry Mr. Cartwright, but I will not accept a registration from a young lady in a riding event.\u201d said Mr. Masterson.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cWell you don\u2019t have to accept her registration I suppose. I would just have to request that the entire committee meet and give us a decision. As I already said, if you look at the rules, the rules clearly state the event is for youths 12-18. No where in the rules does it state that youths do not include girls.\u201d Adam said smugly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Mr. Masterson sputtered a bit. \u201cWell\u2026.\u201c, he started.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cDaddy, you can\u2019t be serious.\u201d Priscilla scoffed. \u201cShe\u2019ll be the laughing stock of the whole town, imagine a girl riding in the rodeo.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cWell darling, I\u2019ll have to agree with you. However, as Mr. Cartwright pointed out, there is nothing in the rules that define youths as boys\u2026\u201d Mr. Masterson said thoughtfully.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cThen I take it that you\u2019ll accept her registration form?\u201d asked Adam pointedly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cI suppose so,\u201d sighed Mr. Masterson as he put his hand out to take the form.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Adam handed him the form and then reached for Ellie\u2019s elbow. \u201cCome along Ellie, it\u2019s time to be getting home.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">As Adam led Ellie away from the bank, Ellie reached up and pulled Adam down for a kiss. \u201cOh Adam, thank you, thank you for standing up for me.\u201d she breathed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Adam looked down on his sister and smiled, \u201cAnything for you princess, anything for you. She just knew she was a shoo in.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The day finally arrived. The whole family rode into Virginia City on their horses. Ellie and Joe made their way over to the barrel racing event. Ellie was slotted for 5th, the last one in the first heat. Ellie impatiently waited her turn. Finally, it was Ellie\u2019s turn.
