Hoss and Joe go on a hunting trip, but they become the hunted, not the hunters<\/span><\/p>\n

A Hunting We Will Go<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0Ma little brother<\/strong> an\u2019 me were on a huntin\u2019 trip, tryin\u2019 ta git us a deer ta help us through winter, when this all started. Joe had wanted ta go alone, but Pa preferred us ta hunt in pairs.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the beginnin\u2019 of the trip, all was goin\u2019 well, but as time went on, and we didn\u2019t find us a deer, my little brother grew plain \u2018ornery.<\/span><\/p>\n

First it was that he was cold, then it was that he was hungry and then came that he was bored.<\/span><\/p>\n

Now, I reckon that I\u2019m a pretty easy goin\u2019 kinda guy, and if any of us can put up with Little Joe in a mood, it\u2019s me, but even I have my limit and he was gittin\u2019 pretty darn close ta it, let me tell ya.<\/span><\/p>\n

We stopped ta give the horses a breather and I pulled out some of the supplies that Hop Sing had packed up fer us.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHere, little brother,\u201d I said, handin\u2019 him a sandwich.<\/span><\/p>\n

Joe was seein\u2019 ta his horse and never even turned round ta see what I was offerin\u2019 him.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t want it,\u201d he muttered, doin\u2019 a mighty good impression of a quarrelsome fifteen year old, which, indeed, he was.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDadburnit, you were jest moanin\u2019 \u2018bout bein\u2019 hungry, Little Joe. I ain\u2019t gonna be stoppin\u2019 agin, in half an hour, jest cos you wanna eat, then.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He grabbed the sandwich off of me, sayin\u2019 nothin\u2019, crammed it in his mouth, chewin\u2019 noisily, and then said, \u201cYuck, that was disgustin\u2019,\u201d and began spittin\u2019 it out onto the ground.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s the matter?\u201d I demanded, hatin\u2019 ta see good food goin\u2019 ta waste.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s got pickle in it, I hate pickle, and you know that, Hoss, so why did ya give it to me?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sorry, little brother, it was an accident; I done gave ya the wrong one.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSomebody told me, one time, there ain\u2019t no such thing as accidents, only carelessness,\u201d yelled Joe, and I have a sneaky feelin\u2019 it was me who told him that. \u201cYou gave me that sandwich on purpose.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNo, I didn\u2019t,\u201d I replied. \u201cWhy on earth would I do that? The ones with pickle are mine and now you\u2019ve spat it out on the ground, I can hardly eat it, and that means I\u2019m one sandwich light fer ma lunch.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cReally? I reckoned with a constitution like yours, you were gonna pick it up off the ground, and eat it, dirt and all.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

My ability ta eat pretty much anythin\u2019 and never git sick made Joe say that, but even I drew the line at some things.<\/span><\/p>\n

Before I could reply, Joe charged inta me, and head butted me right in the bread basket. Now, I\u2019m pretty well padded, there, so it didn\u2019t hurt, but it was enough ta throw me off balance, and I fell over.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve had enough of being with you, so I\u2019m going off hunting, alone,\u201d shouted Joe, as he mounted Cochise.<\/span><\/p>\n

Before I was able to suck back in enough air ta talk, little brother was gone. I\u2019d unsaddled Chubb, and unloaded some supplies, so knew it was gonna take me a while before I could head off after him. \u2018Sides, I was still havin\u2019 trouble breathin\u2019. That little brother has sure bin a caution, lately; reckon it must have summat ta do with him growin\u2019 up, though he ain\u2019t doin\u2019 much of that, yet, growin\u2019 up, I mean. He\u2019s still pretty small fer his age, and we all know that bugs him some.<\/span><\/p>\n

I lay there fer a while, until I felt able ta stand, and then I began ta ready myself fer the search fer Joe. I reckoned he wouldn\u2019t be too far ahead of me, cos although he was quick to anger, he was jest as quick ta calm down, so I wasn\u2019t worried about him.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, when I hadn\u2019t found him, after an hour or so, a knot of fear began ta gnaw at ma insides. Ya know how it is, sometimes, when ya jest know that someone you care fer, is in trouble? Well, that\u2019s how I was feelin\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n

And my feelin\u2019s sure weren\u2019t wrong. As I rounded the next bend in the trail, there was Joe, with his back pressed up agin a broad tree trunk, and a huge mama bear towerin\u2019 over him. There was no sign of Cochise, but a rustlin\u2019 in the bushes, on the other side of the trail, drew my attention away from Joe and the bear, fer a second or two. I could jest make out the small nose of a bear cub, and I saw a way of rescuin\u2019 ma little brother. Fer a big guy, I can move pretty fast, and real quiet like, and I was pickin\u2019 up that cub, afore its mama, or Joe, even knew I was there. Then I started makin\u2019 some noise and the mama bear was soon headin\u2019 fer me, and fergettin\u2019 all about Joe.<\/span><\/p>\n

I ran, as though ma life depended on it, which it did, then suddenly came to a stop, and put the cub down on the ground. The mama was close behind, but her love fer her baby overcame her desire ta harm me, and while she was checkin\u2019 him out, I hightailed it in the opposite direction.<\/span><\/p>\n

I jest about collided with Joe, who was headin\u2019 towards me and the bears, armed with my rifle.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNo need fer that, little brother,\u201d I said. \u201cMother and baby are back together and they ain\u2019t bothered about us, no more. \u2018Sides, she weren\u2019t doin\u2019 nothin\u2019 wrong, jest protectin\u2019 her young, is all.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Joe jest about fell into ma arms, clingin\u2019 onto me fer dear life.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m really sorry, Hoss,\u201d he said, though it was hard ta make out the words, as his face was buried in my shirt. \u201cCochise pulled up, had a stone in his hoof, and we must\u2019ve gotten between the mother and her cub, and she thought we were gonna harm her baby. Cochise ran off, and the mother went after me. Beyond that tree was a sheer drop, so I had nowhere else to run to, so I was mighty glad to see you, big brother.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I was mighty glad ta see you, too,\u201d I said, wiping a hand across ma eyes, and giving the boy a hug.<\/span><\/p>\n

I was so darn happy ta see Joe in one piece that I didn\u2019t really wanna spoil the moment, but I knew I oughta say something to him about what he did.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI oughta tan your hide fer runnin\u2019 off, like that. I hope this has taught you a lesson, young\u2019un. This is why Pa don\u2019t like any of us goin\u2019 huntin\u2019 alone. There are lots of dangers in these woods and two people can look out fer each other.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI do understand now, Hoss. I guess I was just thinking he was treating me as a baby, making us go together, but I should have known that wasn\u2019t the case. Erm, Hoss, are you gonna tell Pa what I did?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThat depends on whether you behave yourself, fer the rest of this trip,\u201d I said, sternly, and he nodded and vowed to be good.<\/span><\/p>\n

Truth be told, I wouldn\u2019t have told on him, as I knew he\u2019d learnt his lesson, and so, as far as I was concerned, we could go on with our trip, with a clean slate.<\/span><\/p>\n

Postscript: We found us a deer, so returned home as heroes, well to Hop Sing, anyway. Adam was jest moanin\u2019 that he\u2019d been left with all the chores LOL<\/span><\/p>\n
