I Think of You<\/strong><\/p>\n

He sat on the hearth; the fire, now smoldering embers, cast a soft glow on the Christmas tree. \u00a0He held the letter in his hand. \u00a0This was not the first Christmas Adam had been gone. \u00a0Hoss remembered that last Christmas before Adam left for college. \u00a0Everyone had gathered Christmas morning to open gifts. \u00a0Joe, being the youngest and still a child opened his gifts first. \u00a0Then Hoss. \u00a0Then it was Adam’s turn. \u00a0Marie and Ben approached Adam. \u00a0Ben said, “Adam, I know you have a special dream, and we would all like to be part of making that dream come true.” \u00a0Adam looked quizzically at Marie and Ben.<\/p>\n

Marie spoke: \u00a0“Joe, give Adam your gift.”<\/p>\n

Joe eagerly handed Adam a rectangle box, wrapped as only a child can wrap a package. \u00a0“I hope you like it, Adam. \u00a0Pa and Ma helped me pick it out for you.”<\/p>\n

Adam opened the box. \u00a0It contained several brand new pencils, a shiny new metal sharpener, and a locking wing compass. \u00a0“Thank you, Joe. \u00a0These are wonderful gifts. \u00a0You know how I like to draw things. \u00a0I will use them well.”<\/p>\n

Hoss stepped up to Adam. \u00a0His gift was also a small rectangle. \u00a0Opening it, Adam drew in his breath. \u00a0A beautiful gold pen lay inside. \u00a0It was not a new pen, but one Adam had seen Ben using when working at his desk. \u00a0He knew the pen had been a wedding gift to Ben from Inger. \u00a0“Pa said I could give it to you because you could really use it and would really like it. \u00a0You knew my mother, but I didn’t. \u00a0It’s like she is giving the gift to you. \u00a0Wish your Ma could give you a gift, too.”<\/p>\n

Adam nodded and gave his brother a hug. \u00a0Tears glistened in Adam’s eyes as he looked at his father. \u00a0He knew what the gift had meant to Ben. \u00a0And Hoss. \u00a0Adam looked at his younger brother through new eyes. \u00a0What kind of man would this generous-hearted little boy grow up to be?<\/p>\n

“Well, Adam, there is one more gift from Marie and me.” Ben held out an envelope to Adam.<\/p>\n

Gently, with questions in his eyes, Adam took the envelope from Ben. \u00a0He read the contents. \u00a0Then slowly read them again. \u00a0Adam had been accepted to a distinguished university in the east, and because of his high grades, had won placement in the elite architectural engineering college.<\/p>\n

The next Christmas, Adam was not home. \u00a0He had sent presents from the east and a letter to all of them. \u00a0He talked about how much he loved being in college, the friends he had met, the things he was learning. \u00a0There was special note to Joe telling him about the magnificent horses he had seen. \u00a0To Hoss, he said, “….and I am using the gold pen you gave me. \u00a0I think of you whenever I use it.”<\/p>\n

This Christmas, several years later, Adam was half away across the world in Australia working with a group of architects and engineers to build structures in a city called Canberra. \u00a0He had written to Ben about his life in the new land. \u00a0To Joe, he had talked about all the pretty women there and he had met a few who were very nice. \u00a0To Hoss, he talked about the strange animals. \u00a0And, he said, “I am still using the gold pen you gave me. \u00a0I think of you whenever I use it.”<\/p>\n

“Merry Christmas, Adam,” Hoss whispered softly. \u00a0“Come home soon. \u00a0And keep writing lots of letters. \u00a0Whenever we receive letters from you, I think of you using the gold pen.”<\/p>\n
