\u201cYou\u2019re a damned fool, Joe Cartwright,\u201d I muttered under my breath as I dug my heels into Cochise\u2019s flanks. The pinto fairly flew up the hillside, her hooves churning up a cloud of dust in our wake. But no matter how quickly she ran, she couldn\u2019t outstrip my thoughts.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Amy Bishop. The name brought up a mental image of a gawky little girl, all knobby knees and elbows. I vaguely remembered her from my early schooling days. The last time I\u2019d seen her she\u2019d been all of eleven years old \u2013 an awkward age for anyone \u2013 and the only thing I\u2019d found girls useful for at that time was to get a rise out of one by dipping a pigtail or two into my inkwell when the opportunity arose.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

My mouth tilted up at the corners as a hazy memory of putting a toad in her lunch pail came to mind. When the poor creature had been discovered, the bucket, lunch, and amphibian went sailing through the air, followed by a deafening shriek that only a terrified little girl could make. That was before our pas started butting heads, and before Luther Bishop decided to send his only child to a boarding school back East to learn how to be a proper lady.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Now, five years later, she was back. Gone was the awkward school girl I\u2019d once known. In her place was an enticing young woman. She was breathtaking: all creamy skin, fiery eyes, and, judging by the way she filled out her undergarments, she had curves in all the right places\u2026.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

You better not start thinking like that<\/i>, a voice that sounded suspiciously like Adam\u2019s echoed in my mind, so naturally, I ignored it.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I was a man and I had eyes. Anyway, what would be the harm in talking to her? It\u2019s not like I was going to fall in love with her. I was only seventeen and I had my whole life ahead of me; my dreams of the future didn\u2019t include a wife and a passel of kids, not yet at least. No, I was just curious. Of course I knew what that curiosity might just buy me \u2013 a six-foot grave. I had no desire to get myself killed, which is what would surely happen if either my pa or hers caught me snooping around. We were enemies after all.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

But if I happened to drop by her little pool at the same time she did… well then, that would be a coincidence. A slightly planned out coincidence, but a coincidence nonetheless.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

She was interesting in a way that the forbidden fruit must have been interesting to Adam and Eve. I wanted to know more about her, ask her about her life back East, and possibly find out if those red lips of hers tasted as sweet as they looked. Was that too much to ask?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Shaking my head, I tried to focus on the task at hand. The man I\u2019d been following was long gone, and I needed to meet up with my family. Putting my desires into motion would have to wait until another day.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

As I rounded the bend and saw my pa and brothers waiting for me, somehow deep inside I knew, for better or for worse, Amy Bishop was going to change my life forever.<\/p>\n
