Things go from bad to worse when Adam realizes he\u00a0<em>might<\/em> have gotten hit on the head a little harder than he&#8217;d originally thought. Finding your way home is difficult when you can&#8217;t see, though not nearly as challenging as hiding an injury from your baby brother.<\/p>\n<p>Word Count: 2830\u00a0 \u00a0Rating: G<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Author&#8217;s Note: Somewhere along the line, I read that a severe blow to the head can be enough to give someone temporary blindness. I don&#8217;t know if that is 100% true, but I do know that I&#8217;m a writer, not a doctor. So, for the sake of this story, that medical fact is true. Enjoy, friends!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Control<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The world returned slowly, piecing itself back together only as fast as Adam could regain his senses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jagged was the ground, but he could feel pressing against his chest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bitter was the dirt as he spat it out of his mouth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though his muscles protested, they turned him over on his side.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Silence screamed, yet he could still hear the rustling of wind through the trees. The faint call of the mockingbird.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And his little brother coming to with a groan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joe.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His brain warned him that sitting up might not be the best course of action. When the thick veil of danger shrouded either of his brothers, however\u2026 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Logic be damned.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Head spinning, Adam swallowed down wave after wave of nausea as he half-crawled, half-staggered over to Joe. His baby brother sat up with a grimace, feeling around for the bump that no doubt marred the back of his head.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cShould\u2019ve seen <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> one coming,\u201d Joe sighed. \u201cDid they take it?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The world had yet to become whole once more. The ringing in his ears faded with all the slowness of Joe doing his morning chores, yet his brain remained ever the stubborn one, refusing to connect Joe\u2019s question with the response that sat on the tip of his tongue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take it\u2026 Take it\u2026?<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take <\/span><\/i><b><i>what?<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThree thousand in cash,\u201d came Joe\u2019s mournful tone. \u201cPa\u2019s gonna have our hides.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Right.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The money.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That couldn\u2019t have been further from his mind at the moment. Not while Joe was still fussing silently with the back of his head.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou all right?\u201d Adam managed, not trusting his voice at first.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYeah.\u201d Joe sounded more annoyed than hurt, sending instant relief rushing through Adam\u2019s bones. \u201cGonna have a headache later, though.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adam felt his lips curve despite their situation. \u201cLater?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOkay, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">now.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d Joe shook his head. \u201cYou?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blinking did nothing to clear his vision, but the ringing had gone its own separate way, so Adam hoped the blurriness would follow suit. \u201cI\u2019ll live.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though he\u2019d been going for a distracting bit of humor, Adam felt anything but alive and whole.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joe simply shrugged. At least, that\u2019s what Adam <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thought<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> he did. The world was in and out, teasing him with the outline of a tree or a flash of a dark horse. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sport.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forcing himself to his feet, Adam sought out his horse, calming the spooked animal with a few strong strokes to the mane.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cShh\u2026\u201d He whispered, blinking hard as if it would somehow bring the fine fibers of fur into focus. \u201cEasy\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Somewhere off to the side, Joe bit out a curse that would\u2019ve gotten a firm reprimand had their father been present. \u201cThey took it all!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAnd that surprises you?\u201d Adam adjusted the reins, not particularly appreciating the fact that he\u2019d had to feel around just to find the dang things. \u201cI warned you not to talk about it back there.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The indignance in Joe\u2019s voice flared up the second he spoke. \u201cHow else were we supposed to discuss it?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI told you to pretend we didn\u2019t even have it. That much cash was a big red bullseye for anyone who overheard you and your big mouth.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou\u2019re not the only business one on this trip, Adam. How were you supposed to know how much I\u2019d haggled out of that buyer if I didn\u2019t tell you?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With more force than necessary, Adam mounted, taking a moment to quell his nausea before shooting back with a biting reply. \u201cWe were in a public place, Joe. I <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">told<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you not to talk about it and you did, plain and simple. You just couldn\u2019t resist bragging about the deal you made.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAll right! So, I was proud of myself. Is that so wrong? You\u2019re just upset because we both know <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> couldn\u2019t have swung a deal like that in a million years!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m upset because you didn\u2019t listen!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHey, you\u2019re not the boss of me!\u201d It was Joe\u2019s age-old argument, the one Adam was certain his little brother would be falling back on even when they were all old and gray.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sucking in a sharp breath, Adam gripped the reins, trying not to pretend they were Joe\u2019s scrawny little neck. \u201cWell, the fact of it is the money\u2019s gone, so I guess none of that matters now, does it?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though Joe\u2019s face remained a sun-tanned blur, Adam had no trouble picturing the righteous confusion dancing across it. \u201cAren\u2019t we gonna go after them? We can still get it back, I know we can.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exhaustion washed over him as all the fight drained away. \u201cWe were out for a while, Joe. They\u2019re long gone by now. Best thing we can do is head home before it gets darker.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joe glanced up at the sky for a long moment and Adam fought the urge to roll his eyes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCome on.\u201d Pressing Sport forward, he could only hope Joe would follow. After that little spat\u2014totally uncalled for, in Adam\u2019s opinion\u2014he wasn\u2019t too keen on nagging his brother to follow him. Whether Joe tagged along or not was his own decision. Adam was tired of babysitting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For a while, Adam only heard his own horse\u2019s hooves, plodding along at a most methodical pace. Just slow enough for Joe to catch up, whenever he stopped taking his good old time fooling around back there\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sun hadn\u2019t been up more than an hour when they\u2019d set out from Reno that morning. Now, it seemed to be taking a quick descent behind the hills.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They\u2019d been knocked out too long.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wasted an entire day.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s just <\/span><\/i><b><i>perfect.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And try as he might, he couldn\u2019t bring the world into focus, though maybe that could be attributed to the low evening lighting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heavy hooves charged up behind him in a gallop and Joe poked his head into Adam\u2019s peripheral vision.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cUh, here.\u201d The kid\u2019s voice held a somewhat subdued tone, that hesitance of someone trying to make amends, yet they don\u2019t quite know how. \u201cYou forgot your hat.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Right.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A black blur flashed in front of him and Adam accepted the offering with a nod, securing it on his head. Not a second later, his skull throbbed, rebelling against the crown of the hat that usually fit so well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You got a pretty bad blow to the head,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> he scolded himself. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019d you expect?<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His fingers couldn\u2019t seem to rip it off fast enough, and he could only imagine the confused look Joe was sending his way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSomething wrong?\u201d the kid asked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hanging the hat off his saddle horn, Adam tried for a wry grin, hoping to heaven he was pulling it off well. \u201cI got knocked in the head, so yeah, I\u2019d say something\u2019s wrong.\u201d When Joe made no reply, Adam went down the over-clarification route. \u201cThat bump on my head\u2019s a little too sore right now, Joe. Besides, it\u2019s not that bright anyway. I don\u2019t really need the hat.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He supposed Joe flashed his own little grin in return, pulling off his hat, too, yet Adam still couldn\u2019t be sure. Not with the darkness closing faster than a dust cloud.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blinking did nothing. In fact, the next blink turned out to be a curse because it was as if he had yet to reopen his eyes. His brain told him that yes, logically his eyes <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">were<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> open, and yet his vision remained shrouded in darkness. A quick swipe of a hand over his eyes revealed the bitter truth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, his eyes were open.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">no,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> he couldn\u2019t see <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anything<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fear seized his chest, eating away at his air supply.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He let it rein only a moment before logic took control.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s only temporary.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Yes, he would go with that. A temporary result of a blow to the head.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sure. That\u2019s never happened before, though.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First time for everything.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Right.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sucking in a breath, he forced his mind to calm down, to command his heart to slow its rapid beating.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joe.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> His brother\u2019s name burned on the edge of his tongue. He almost said it; almost spoke the bitter truth aloud.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But something stopped him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That age-old need to remain in control. To lead. To prove to the world he knew what he was doing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Early on, he had realized the only thing he could truly control was himself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adam blinked again. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nothing.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leading others to believe he was fine not only helped them, it helped <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">him.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The more they believed it, the more he, too, began to believe it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And it wasn\u2019t as if Sport didn\u2019t know where they were supposed to go. The trusty steed knew the road home well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adam carded a gentle hand through his mane. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Come on, boy. Take me home\u2026<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To say the rest of the trip remained uneventful was a mere fantasy that he would have loved to make a reality. The pounding in his head and the thick sheet of black covering his vision, however, reminded him that life wasn\u2019t always so kind.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The seconds between Joe\u2019s cry of warning and the sickening <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">crack<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were barely enough time for Adam\u2019s brain to register the oncoming danger\u2014and not nearly enough time to duck.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One hand gripped the reins, a last-ditch effort to save himself from falling straight off his horse. The other hand flew to his forehead as if rubbing it could truly chase away the splintering pain from his encounter with what he could only assume was a hanging tree branch.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He didn\u2019t regret the muttered curses that flew from his mouth, nor the nails that dug into his clenched palm. For some odd reason, countering pain with more pain made a body feel better\u2014most of the time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAre you all right?\u201d A thick layer of hesitation and concern coated Joe\u2019s voice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFine,\u201d Adam ground out, giving his forehead one last rub for good measure. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like <\/span><\/i><b><i>that\u2019s<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> going to do any good.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cI\u2019m fine, Joe.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">happened?<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat did it <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">look<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like happened?\u201d The sarcastic bite was unnecessary, but it slipped out before Adam could stop it. He blew out a sigh. \u201cI couldn\u2019t duck in time. It\u2019s no big deal.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou had all the time in the world to duck!\u201d Joe countered. \u201cWhat, got your head stuck in the clouds or something?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI wasn\u2019t paying attention. Just let it go, all right?\u201d He urged Sport forward. \u201cCome on, we\u2019ve got a lot of ground to cover.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The silence was deafening, tailing Adam as he made his way down the trail. He could almost hear the suspicion radiating off his little brother.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just let it go\u2026<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This hope was dashed the moment he felt Joe\u2019s hand on Sport\u2019s bridle, slowing them both to a stop.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHey, Adam,\u201d Joe began, shattering that unbearable silence at last, \u201chow many fingers am I holding up?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adam rolled his eyes, yet he didn\u2019t dare feel around for Joe\u2019s hand, no matter how badly he wanted to release its grip and just<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> go.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cI\u2019m not in the mood for games, Joe.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis isn\u2019t a game,\u201d Joe snapped. \u201cJust answer the stupid question: how many fingers?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> That was usually the go-to number for these sorts of things. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two or four\u2026<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well, a fifty-fifty chance isn\u2019t the <\/span><\/i><b><i>worst<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> odds.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTwo,\u201d he replied, adjusting Sport\u2019s reins in the hopes that his brother would <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">let go.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cNow, can we get going, huh?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWrong.\u201d The way Joe\u2019s voice faltered every so slightly had Adam holding his breath. \u201cI\u2019m not holding up any.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cheater.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His best guess told him Joe was studying him right about now. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That would explain the silence.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou can\u2019t see\u2026 can you?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was a simple question, yet Adam was having the hardest time answering it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s fine,\u201d he said with an air of finality. \u201cSport knows the way home.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOh, okay, sure. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sport<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> knows the way home. Come on, Adam, I\u2019m right here! Why didn\u2019t you tell me?\u201d The frustration did nothing to conceal his brother\u2019s worry. \u201cSo, what? You just couldn\u2019t see this whole time?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt hasn\u2019t been <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> long.\u201d <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A truly winning argument if I\u2019ve ever heard one.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNo <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wonder <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you bashed your head! I could\u2019ve warned you or something. Told you it was coming! I-I could\u2019ve <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">helped!<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI don\u2019t need help, Joe,\u201d Adam shot back, taking a lucky guess and reaching out, successfully brushing the kid\u2019s hand off his horse. \u201cI just need to get home.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDon\u2019t need help, or don\u2019t <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">want <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was petty, he knew, but Adam didn\u2019t answer. Spurring Sport forward, he pressed on down the trail, all the while, waging war against his determination and pride.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAdam!
