Loud screams permeated the air, causing Elizabeth to stir beside him.

“No it isn’t, I got him last time.” She said, covering her head with the blankets.

“I got him last time and it took him an hour to get back to sleep, then another half hour for myself. It’s your turn.” He said a little more sharply than he meant.

“I went through his birth Adam, I think my turn is over, you deal with it.” She replied sleepily rolling over.

“Ya know………aah forget it!” Adam said throwing the covers off both he and his wife and getting out of bed.

He walked down the short hallway to his son’s room. The upstairs was built with a loft overlooking the great room, his son’s room sat at the farthest end. Looking down he saw the large fireplace that stood against the far wall. Building it had reminded him of home with his father and brother’s, it had always made him feel secure. Now, his own family could sit in front of the hearth and create their own special memories. A bear skin rug sat in it’s front, he smiled remembering how he and his wife had made memories of their own on that very rug.

His smile faded as the cries grew louder, they were now shrill and high pitched. The first time he had heard this cry he panicked, racing into the room fearing his son was in pain. Now, though he quickened his pace, the fear he had once felt faded. This cry he had learned was one of annoyance, they would cease as soon as he was picked up. Peering through the crack of the slightly open door he saw the crib. He and Hoss had built this crib together, Hoss took his time carving in the rails more intricate details. He saw his son, squirming and screaming lying on his back.

“Eric, it’s okay baby, Papa’s here.” Adam said creeping towards the crib and scooping up his screaming son. He cradled him in his arms, bringing the child to his chest as he approached the rocking chair. The cries weakened as the child was snuggled close, he settled in to his father’s warmth.

“You’re momma said it was my turn again. What do you think about that?” He whispered, rocking slowly in the chair. Their eye’s met, his son’s crying now soft hiccups. “When are you gonna start sleeping through the night son, you know it’s harder to work a full day on three hours sleep.” Eric smiled up at him, his father’s voice had always calmed him. “Tomorrow I may just go sleep at Pa’s house, then you’re mother would have to settle you all night. That’ll teach her to make me get up all the time.” Adam smiled, knowing this was an empty threat, but just the thought of his wife’s face when he told her he would be sleeping at his father’s house made him laugh. “Then momma would be pretty upset with Papa wouldn’t she.”

Eric gurgled up at his father, his mouth forming spit bubbles as he cooed. Night time was always tough for him, he missed the comfort of his mother and father always being near. He raised a small fist towards his father’s dimpled smile, hoping to let him know how much he needed the comfort of that smile, the warmth of his arms, and the beating of his heart next to his.

“Alright little buddy, how about you let Papa get some sleep now.” Adam said standing and walking back towards the crib.

Eric felt himself being lowered onto the mattress, the bars surrounding him. He whimpered once to let his father know of his displeasure, waiting to be held again. When he saw his father’s back he let out a shrill cry. He wasn’t ready to be left alone again.

Adam turned back, the crying started. This time the cry was different, deeper and more meaningful. He went back to the crib and drew his son into his arms once again.

“Now Eric, we talked about this. Papa’s gotta sleep.” Adam said as he watched the tears stream down his son’s face. “Alright, you’ll come with me, but no more tears once we reach Momma’s room, we don’t want to wake her too.”

They went down the hall, Eric peering over the ledge as they went. He could see everything more clearly now, his six month old eye sight allowed the blur in his vision to cease. He saw the giant stone fireplace on which many nights he lay in his mother’s arms. Not wanting to be held as often, he enjoyed the softness of the rug on his skin as he rolled or scooted to reach his toys. The quickest way to get where he wanted to go was to lie on his back and kick his feet, scooting across the room on his back. But, more often than not his mother or father would turn him onto his stomach, forcing him to army crawl using his legs and feet. Lately his mother had put her hand under his stomach, this raised him up onto all fours. She then encouraged him to remain in this position as she helped him alternate his legs. If he remained in this position long, his parents would clap and smile.

His thoughts turned as he entered his parent’s room. He was not allowed in here often, and to come with his father to bed was a treat. He had never been allowed to sleep in the bed before, only to sit on the mattress while his parents dressed. He felt himself lowered to the mattress, his father sliding in beside him. Between his parents he felt safe and secure, he was no longer lonely.

“Adam.” Elizabeth said waking as the sun cast a warm glow across the room. Her husband sighed and turned over, her young son stirred in the bed beside him. “Adam.” She said again, this time a little more loudly, rubbing a hand up and down his arm.

“Hmm?” Came a grunted reply.

“What is our son doing in our bed?” She asked, watching her child roll over onto his back.

“Couldn’t sleep.” He murmur, his voice lost in a sigh.

“What?” She said poking him awake.

“He couldn’t sleep. Would you quit poking me!” The roughness in his voice caused her to smile, he was always grumpy in the morning.

She poked him again, first in the arm, then the back, then reaching around to his stomach. He ignored her poke at first, but as she poked her way down his side he grabbed her hand.

“Are you awake now?” She laughed as he held tight to her fingers.

“Go away.” He said, still holding tight to her hand.

“I can’t, you have my hand.” She tugged slightly as his grip tightened.

“Then come here.” He smiled, pulling her towards him for a good morning kiss.

“Adam, be careful, we’re going to squish our son.” She said, her voice in a whisper with just a hint of wanting, she knew it drove him crazy.

“Then take him to his crib and come back to me.” He said, his golden eyes staring into hers.

Silently she scooped her son into her arms and made her way to the crib. Placing him gently down, he stirred a little, turning onto his side. She crept out of the room and back down the hall. Walking into the room she allowed her robe to fall around her, her body shimmering in the sunlight. Adam smiled and lifted the covers, allowing her to slide in beside him. Without saying a word he kissed her gently, his hands exploring her body under the covers. His kissing intensified, causing her body to react towards him, she rolled on top of him, looking deep into his eyes. The two bodies became one, their breathing increased.

A shrill cry pierced the air, both stopped their love making and looked towards the door. They stayed this way, hoping the cries would stop and they could finish what they started. After a few minutes, both knew it was not to be, Elizabeth rolled off him, reaching for the robe on the floor.

“You’re not leaving!” Adam said, his voice sounding more of a whine than of a question.

“Adam, I have to get our son.” She said, tying her robe tightly and going to the door.

“But……..What about………..Aaaah!” Her husband groaned, then rolled on to his stomach.

“Sorry dear, we’ll make it up later. You better get up soon or your brother’s will be here knocking down the door.” She couldn’t help but smile, his frustration also her own.

Adam waited a few minutes, giving himself time to cool down. Then, sitting up he swung his legs to the side of the bed. He sat for a moment, head in hands, a warm bath sounded very appealing. But, he was already late, so instead he went to the dresser to find his clothes. Pulling out a black shirt and pants he quickly dressed and shaved. He headed out of the room, boots in hand and made his way downstairs. He could smell the eggs cooking, and heard his wife humming in the kitchen. Walking into the room and sitting at the table he saw his son playing happily by his mother’s feet.

“Glad somebody’s happy.” Adam teased at his son as Eric pounded a fist on the pan his mother had given him to play with. “No interruptions tonight young man.” He laughed as Eric grabbed at his mother’s robe, seeking her attention to watch him perform.

“Oh Adam, I forgot I had to go to town today and pick up that material for Mrs. Winters. She’s too sick to go and I told her I would help out. You know how Eric hates to ride in the wagon, I’m worried now that he’s able to get around so well, he may get hurt.” Elizabeth sighed, stirring the eggs. “Can you ride him out to your father’s, see if he’ll stay with him a few hours. I could swing by and pick him up.”

“I guess so. I told you I could fix him up a seat so he could ride safely beside you.” Adam answered, putting his boots on and sitting on the floor next to his son.

“Yes, but that won’t help me today. Maybe we could work on that for next week.” She smiled, seeing Adam pick up the disregarded wooden spoon and smacking it hard on the over turned pan.

“Okay, I’ll start it this weekend. Let’s show Momma how well we play together.” Adam said, handing his spoon to his son, and pulling two more pots in front of him. They banged together on the pots, Eric with the spoon and Adam drumming his fingers until the eggs were finished.

Ella dished out her meal while Adam seated Eric in his high chair. She sat across from her husband and watched as her son ate with his fingers, missing his mouth here and there, but mostly getting the food in. He had showed much improvement in the last month, asserting his independence. Feeding himself had seemed to become his top priority.

“Hello!” Came a shout from the Great Room as the front door slammed closed.

“Didn’t realize I was that late.” Adam said swallowing the last of his coffee and watching as his brother’s walked into the room.

“You planning on working today older brother?” Joe asked, a smug smile across his face. It wasn’t often he was able to give his brother a hard time for shirking duties.

“Can’t handle things on your own for a few minutes little brother?” Adam emphasized the word little, knowing it was the quickest way to get his brother’s goat.

“Sure I can, just thought I ought to make sure you remembered what day it was, you being so old and all, your memory starts to fade.” Joe smiled, knowing referring to his brother as old was the quickest way to get back at him.

Hoss ambled over to his nephew who was covered in scrambled eggs and toast. Eric smiled up at him and held out a few bits of egg towards his uncle. Hoss took the eggs in an exaggerated bite, causing his nephew to squeal with delight. Hearing his brother’s banter, he looked to Elizabeth, seeing a smile in her eyes he winked.

“Alright, I’m ready. Let me just get Eric cleaned up and we’ll be on our way.” Adam said standing, and putting his cup in the sink.

“Awe Adam, let me do it. I don’t mind giving the little guy a bath, and he likes his Uncle Hoss don’t he.” Hoss cooed, laughing at the wide grin his nephew held.

“Fine, but don’t be too long. Pa’ll be out here soon if we take too much time.” Adam half joked, wondering if that is exactly what his father would do.

Eric grabbed his uncle’s strong arms as he was lifted from the chair. Grease from the eggs now stained the sleeves of Hoss’s shirt, though he seemed to pay no attention. The water sat cooling next to the stove as Hoss grabbed the wash bucket he had created just for his nephew. Making sure the water was the correct temperature he lowered Eric into the warm water. Eric dropped his hands instantly, splashing the water out of the basin and onto the floor. When he received no stern glances, he continued his good time while he felt himself scrubbed with the warm wet towel. The bath seemed to end to soon, and soon he was shivering in the cool morning air, a fluffy towel working to dry him.

“There you go punkin, all dried off. Let’s get you dressed.” Hoss said, heading for the babies room.

“COME ON HOSS!” He heard Joe yell as he put the shirt over the child’s head. “I’M COMIN’!” He returned, Eric wincing at the loud noise.

“Ya know, Pa said it’ll take a few years before the railroad expands that stretch near the Mexican border, probably still debating which direction to go.” Joe finished as he watched his brother and nephew come down the stairs. “It’s about time Hoss, you didn’t have to take all day about it.” He said, smiling at the ruffled curls of his nephew.

“Yeah, yeah, yeah.” Hoss mumbled knowing he was being teased. “Here ya go Adam, squeaky clean.”

Adam took his son and held him high in the air for inspection. Eric gurgled as his father held him with one hand, and tickled him with the other.

“Give him here older brother, you’re gonna drop him.” Joe said reaching up for his nephew.

Adam made sputtering noises as he swooped his son down into Joe’s arms.

“You’ve become a softy older brother.” Joe laughed at his brother’s playful nature.

“He used to do that with you Joe, don’t you remember?” Hoss laughed, pushing carefully on his brother’s arm. “Remember when he dropped you that one time, fell right on his head didn’t he Adam?” Hoss joked, giving Adam the eye to go along with him.

“Oh right. That explains why you are the way you are Joe. I’m real sorry about that, the doctor said you’d never have a chance for proper learning.” Adam moved towards the desk, gathering his hat and gun belt.

“Sure fella’s, laugh it up. You’re just jealous I got all the good looks in the family.” Joe said, kissing his nephew on the head. This little fella looks almost just like me, lucky kid.”

“Are you three planning on spending the day here, if so I’ll start getting lunch ready.” Elizabeth said walking into the room, a wooden spoon in her hand.

“No ma’am, we’re on our way.” Adam replied, scooting towards the door.

“I hope so, I don’t need Pa coming out here and lecturing me on how to get you men to work.” She said, approaching the three men quickly.

“What are you doing?” Hoss asked, backing towards the door, bumping Adam out of the way.

“I thought you might need some help along.” Elizabeth smiled at her husband, causing him to smile and turn towards the door.

“Go, go, go!” Adam laughed, trying to reach for the door handle. He opened the door just as the spoon cracked against his back side. There was just enough force for a little sting, he heard two more whacks as he made his hasty retreat.

The three men ran into the yard, Joe rubbing his rear after handing his nephew back to Adam. They hid their laughter as they mounted their horses.

“Sure is some gal you got there Adam.” Hoss said as they turned towards the land.

“Yeah, got a mean swing on her too.” Joe said, kicking Cochise into a trot. “Hey, don’t you need to take Eric back inside?”

“Nope, taking him to Pa. Ella’s got some thing’s to do in town, and you know how Eric hates to ride in the wagon.” Adam said, holding his son close, protecting him with a strong arm. “Besides, Eric loves to ride a horse, look at him.”

No one could deny it, the child’s face was lit up. The three men made conversation as they headed back towards the ranch house. They knew Pa would be thrilled to see his Grandson, the lecture concerning their lateness to work would be forgotten. Eric gurgled his pleasure, babbling when they past the animals on their way. The hours ride had felt good, sitting against his father’s belly. He felt the in and out of his breath, and listened as the three men spoke. His mood was happy, as he watched the scenery go by.

Slowly cantering into the yard, Adam watched as the front door opened. His father stood on the porch, hands on hips, and a cross look creasing his features.

“Would you like to tell me just what in the world is……………” He stopped mid-sentence, his notion to lecture his sons on their lack of getting started this morning disappearing from his lips. “Well good morning Eric, how are you today?” He smiled, taking his grandson from his eldest’s arms.

Eric smiled and reached for his grandfather’s nose. It was his custom to pull on it first thing.

“Looks like you had a good ride today.” Ben cooed, walking towards the porch, forgetting his son’s presence.

“Uh, thanks Pa.” Adam said, turning his horse back towards pasture as his father entered the house, door closing behind him. Shaking his head Adam turned back to his brother’s. “Well boys, let’s get to work.” He sighed, wondering when his father would remember that he was his first born, and could use a little attention as well.

Chapter 2

“Well Eric, what shall we do first?” Ben spoke softly, his grandson surveyed the room around him.

The stair case had always appealed to him, that Indian blanket seemed to call to him. The colors swirled through it, though it was a simple design. Not like momma’s, momma’s was intricate in detail, colors weaving in and out making different shapes and pictures. Looking to the fireplace, he wondered how it got there. It seemed to travel from his house to his grandpa’s house.

“How about a pony ride then.” Ben said holding his grandson steady and bouncing him on his knee. He said the rhyme that Adam and he had said for many years when he was a young boy on his knee. Eric smiled and laughed at the tune as he rode.

This is the way the ladies ride, the ladies ride, the ladies ride

This is the way the ladies ride, all the way to town

Ben increased the pace of his knee as he went into the next verse.

This is the way the gentlemen ride, the gentlemen ride, the gentlemen ride

This is the way the gentlemen ride, all the way to town

Eric bounced wildly as his grandpa increased in both speed and volume as he took his ride.

This is the way the cowboy’s ride, the cowboy’s ride, the cowboy’s ride

This is the way the cowboy’s ride, all the way to town!

The rhyme ended and Eric clapped his hands, hoping for more. His hopes were dashed as his grandfather rose to his feet.

“Why don’t we go check on the horses in the barn. I’m sure they wouldn’t mind you giving them an apple.” Ben said, heading towards the door, his young grandson on his hip.

“Alright Joe, that’s enough. One more half assed job done like that and I’m gonna take it out of your hide!” Adam said, re-digging the post hole again, making sure it was deeper.

“Adam, now there ain’t no reason for you to go yelling at him, he wasn’t finished with it, he was getting a drink. You two have been at it all morning. How about the both of you give it a rest.” Hoss intervened, stepping in between the two.

“Yeah older brother, I was getting a drink. If you didn’t stand over my shoulder all the time and worried about your own work, we would be done a whole lot quicker.” Joe said heatedly, pointing a finger at his older brother.

They had been at each other’s throats all day, digging post holes put everyone in a bad mood, including Hoss.

“If you’d both cut it out we’d be headed for home by now. I can smell Hop Sing’s biscuits cookin. Now lets get back to diggin these holes.” Hoss finished gruffly, scowling at his brother’s.

He felt a mound of dirt clatter around his shoulders, both his brother’s standing behind him, scowls on both faces.

“Now dadburnit, who done it!” Hoss said, stepping towards each of them. Neither face registered guilt, he felt his own frustration building. “I want to know who done it and I want to know now!”

Joe and Adam bent down collecting more dirt on their shovels. With only a glance at one another, both raised their shovel and sent the dirt traveling in their brother’s direction, hitting him square in the stomach.

“That does it! Come here!” Hoss said, charging forth at the two of them. They side stepped, each taking a different direction as they ran off towards the open field. Joe’s laughter echoed around them as Hoss gave chase. Adam peered back, seeing Joe being chased, he turned back towards his brother. Running up behind Hoss, he took off his hat and whacked him hard across his backside. He laughed as Hoss shouted, then turned on him. Adam ran towards Joe, catching up to his brother with his long strides. Reaching Joe’s back, he repeated the gesture, then ran on towards his horse. Joe and Hoss in hot pursuit, he reached Sport and jumped on. Kicking Sport into a gallop he headed back towards the ranch.

He heard his brother’s hoof beats not far behind him as he jumped from his horse, leading him into the barn. He removed Sports saddle and hurriedly brushed him down, then headed for the house. Not quickly enough; he saw his brother’s enter the yard. Running for the door he barely made it inside as Hoss reached for the door knob. Pulling the door closed hard, Adam held it with all his might.

“Open this door boy, you’re in for a world of hurt!” Hoss shouted, laughter in his voice.

Adam struggled against his brother’s strength, using his foot against the wall for added protection.

“Yeah Adam, come on and take what’s comin to ya! You can’t hide in there forever.” Came his youngest brother’s voice.

“Adam!” Ben said sternly, seeing the door open, then close slightly as the tug-of-war continued.

“Yeah Pa?” Adam laughed as the door opened a bit more.

“What in the name of Zeus is going on here!” Ben commanded, his voice sharp with fatherly zeal.

“Nothin Pa.” Adam said, slamming the door closed once again, grunting as his strength faltered.

“It doesn’t look like nothing. Quite down, your son is sleeping.” He reprimanded as the door was yanked open again. This time however Adam lost his hold, and tumbled backwards. Hoss and Joe tumbled in, landing hard on Adam who lay on the hard wood floor.

“Now you’re gonna get it!” Joe yelled, trying to untangle himself from the heap. He jumped onto the pile, landing on top of Hoss who was on top of Adam, crushing them as best he could.

“JOSEPH!” Ben yelled, watching his son’s wrestle against one another.

Adam was able to squirm out of the pile, then jumped onto Joe who lie next to Hoss. Joe let out a sharp breath of air against the weight, then his eye’s opened wide as he saw Hoss headed their way.

“Adam, move!” Joe breathed out, the two rolling quickly to the left. Hoss missed the pile, landing on his hands and stomach on the floor. He grunted as a weight came upon his back and started to fight back.

“Hoss!” He heard Adam say with concern, stopping him mid roll. Slowly Hoss turned his head, seeing his father laying across him. He froze, watching his father struggle to stand, then straightening his vest as he stood to face them.

Adam and Little Joe stood stock still as Hoss stood next to them. They were breathing hard, and sweating with exertion, and now with worry.

“What I would like to know is why my three so called grown son’s are rolling around the floor like heathens!” Ben boomed, his face red.

“We didn’t mean to knock ya down Pa, me and Adam was just trying to get away from Hoss.” Joe tried, then swallowed hard when his father stood in front of him, just inches from his face.

“Well you did knock me down now didn’t you! What if I had been holding Eric, what then!” He yelled again, his question coming out as a statement. “Now your speechless huh, nobody says a word! Well I’ve gotta something to say and you’re gonna hear it!” He yelled.

A cry broke through ceiling, loud wails coming from upstairs. Ben turned his attention toward the tears and walked quickly up the staircase towards his oldest son’s room where his grandson now slept.

The boys had a hard time keeping a straight face as their father fled towards stairs.

“Saved again.” Hoss said quietly, bringing his arm up to Adam’s shoulder.

“Yeah, I thought we were in for it good. Next time maybe you two ought to act a little more grown up.” Adam said, hiding his smile behind his hand.

“WE…….Why I oughtta……….” Joe said taking a mock swing at his brother.

“Now stop it you two, you’re the one’s that got us in trouble in the first place.” Hoss said, stepping out of line and walking towards the kitchen. He stopped mid stride as cold water splashed across his neck and down his back. Turning with a scowl he faced his brother’s, each face registering innocence. “Don’t you two never learn.” He said, wiping the water from his neck.

Chapter 3

“Is he asleep?” Adam whispered as his wife climbed into bed beside him. He pulled her body close to his and kissed softly across her neck line.

“It took forever, every time I would walk away from the crib he would cry. I don’t know whats gotten into him.” Her arms wrapped around him as the kissing continued.

“I love you Ella Bell.” Adam whispered, finding her mouth. She returned the gesture and soon the two were once again entangled in each other’s arms.

The minutes passes, each lost in each other’s warmth when the loud piercing cry once again entered the room. They ignored the sound, each trying to quickly please the other when the cries turned into piercing screams.

“Adam.” Elizabeth said, pulling slightly away from her husband.

“Not yet Ella, just need a little more time, he’ll be okay.” Adam answered, trying to pull her back towards him.

“Adam, your son is calling you, he could be scared.” She said, pushing away again, this time rolling over.

“Ella! I……………damn!” Adam finished, turning his back to her as he stood up. Frustration swam deep within him as he pulled on his robe and headed towards his son’s room. Pushing the door open, he winced when it hit the wall. Eric startled, then screamed loudly as the sound echoed in his small room.

Eric felt himself being lifted from the crib, the light from the doorway casting shadows in his room. He was held close to his father’s chest, and waited for the soothing sound of his father’s voice. When no words came, he tried to lift his head to search his fathers face. This wasn’t the way he was usually held. His father’s arms were rigid, his body stiff, the silence let him know that something was definitely wrong. They sat in the rocking chair, silently rocking. There would be no soft singing to him tonight Eric thought as he worked to gain his father’s attention. He placed one small hand on his father’s cheek, causing their eyes to meet. Eric grunted, then smiled hoping his father would respond to him in some way. Instead he was lifted and placed back in the crib. The door closed quickly and he was once again alone.

Eric watched the shadows play on the wall, the loneliness he felt making him feel desperate for attention. He whimpered quietly to himself as the loneliness turned to fear, the shadows dancing around him. He wanted his father, why did he leave him like that. He cried louder this time, in hopes of his father or mother’s return. The door once again flung open and he was lifted from bed without a word. It was his father again. He snuggled his face into his father’s neck as they left the bedroom. He was lain once again, only this time the bed was soft rather than firm. He felt his mother beside him as his father lay with him, the covers pulled around them. His father’s eyes were already closed and his mother snored softly beside him. Eric lay his hand on his father’s arm as he slept and scooted his bottom closer to his mother. He felt the love surround him as he once again drifted into a peaceful sleep.

Chapter 4

Adam woke to the sun light, today was Saturday, a day off. His wife and son lay beside him, both with a contented smile playing upon their lips. He sat up quietly, then edged his way out of the bed. Now standing he reached down to touch his son’s soft curls. Remembering the events from the night before he knew he had not reacted as he should to his son. He was frustrated and angry, these interruptions were hard on both he and his wife, but he had blamed the child. Now looking at the sleeping angel, guilt streamed through him. He had not even spoken a word to his son. He continued to play with his curls until his son stirred. Carefully he lifted him from the bed and cradled him in his arms. He made his way to the Great Room, his sleeping bundle in his arms as he sat next to the hearth. He kissed the babies soft cheek, then his forehead. Eric remained sleeping as he and his father sat together in their favorite spot.

Elizabeth found the two sleeping soundly in front of the hearth. Adam held his son close in his arms, his breathing steady but not heavy letting her know that he was not completely asleep.

“Sweetheart?” Ella whispered in his ear, causing him to smile. “Are we going to your father’s house for breakfast?” They had planned that a week ago, Ben, Joe, and Hoss complaining about not seeing enough of her son.

“Mmhhmm.” Came his reply as she kissed his cheek.

“Would you like me to take the baby?” She asked, already in the process of doing so.

“Okay.” He replied, eyes still closed, breathing still steady.

“I love you sweetheart.” She said as she stood to get herself and her son dressed.

“Love you.” Came his soft reply as his eyes slowly opened.

“YOU LATE!” Hop Sing chastised as the family came in to the kitchen to greet him. Eric gurgled his soft reply and batted his eye lashes at his friend. “Hop Sing work in kitchen all day and family come late. Biscuits burned, eggs dry up!” His tirade turned to his native language as Ella wrapped him in a hug.

“I’m sorry Hop Sing. We did our best, but getting these two ready to go can be a real challenge.” Ella said, rubbing a hand up and down the cooks back.

“Hop Sing no happy. Should come when say come, now have to start breakfast over!” His temper still shone, though his eyes shone love for the rest of his family.

“Hop Sing, Eric has been so excited to see you all morning, and you are ignoring him. I think you better say hello.” Adam said, his sly smile hidden as he tried hard to change the subject.

“Baby Eric need good example like Hop Sing to show him how to work with time. Eric stay with Hop Sing, help with breakfast. You two out!” Eric giggled as Hop Sing took him into his arms and swung him towards the stove, preparing to make breakfast for the late comers.

Adam scooted Ella out of the kitchen, then walked through the house. His father sat in the red leather chair, reading yesterday’s paper. Joe was still upstairs, and Hoss was in the barn with the animals.

“Morning Pa, sorry were late.” Adam said, sitting with his wife on the settee.

“I heard. Hop Sing has been ranting for hours this morning.” Ben smiled, giving his daughter-in-law a wink.

“Eric’s been keeping us up all night. I don’t know what the deal is, but I haven’t gotten more than three hours sleep in three days.” Adam sighed, rubbing his hands over his face, fighting the floating feeling in his head.

“Joe went through that stage. Marie made the mistake of bringing him to our bed. After that, it took months for him to sleep on his own. You remember that don’t you son?” Ben raised his eyebrows as Adam’s eyes gave away his mistake.

“I remember. Marie was so frustrated that even walking past her wrong could land you in hot water. I think I was in more trouble those few weeks than I was my whole life. She sure knew how to yell.” Adam said shaking his head as memories danced in his head.

“Adam Stoddard Cartwright!”

Adam winced as he heard his name screamed from inside the house. He was in the barn reading one of his favorite stories and had just gotten to the best part when he was interrupted by his Step Mother’s sharp voice. He closed the book with a huff and looked towards the house. He heard his name hollered again, joined by the shrill screams of his baby brother. He rose, setting his book on the haystack beside him and moved towards the house.

Entering through the back door, Hop Sing gave him a sympathetic glance, then slipped out the back door. He walked into the living room where Marie stood over a mess of papers that strewn the floor.

“You called ma’am?” He asked, trying his best to be polite and keep any tone from entering his voice.

“Just look at this mess young man! I can’t even walk through my own house without knocking into messes left everywhere. How many times do I have to be after you boys to pick up after yourselves!” She yelled, her face a mess of red blotches.

“These are Pa’s papers ma’am, he was sorting receipts last night.” Adam said calmly, trying to ignore the comment about this being her house. He still wasn’t keen on the idea of her being here, but he was starting to accept it as being a fact that would not change.

“Did I ask whose papers they were! Pick them up right now and put them away.” She stormed, switching from English to French.

Adam ignored her tirade as he collected the papers she had obviously knocked to the floor. She was still ranting in French as he set the papers in order back on the desk. Interrupting her, he turned back towards the door.

“Where are you going?” She yelled, grabbing the sleeve of his shirt.

“I cleaned it up. I was going back outside.” Adam said, looking at her hand which was holding tight to his sleeve.

“No you’re not. I need you to watch your little brother. I have chores to finish, and I can’t get anything done entertaining him all day!” She said hotly, thrusting Little Joe towards his brother.

“But…………”

“NO BUTS!” She yelled, storming off towards her bedroom.

Adam stared at his little brother. His nose was running and his eyes still watering.

“It’s okay little buddy. Big brother’s got you. How about a trip outside?” He walked outside with his brother, and set down on the porch. Rocking Joe back and forth, he smiled at the small curls, and pouty lips. “Love you Joe.” Adam whispered, kissing his brothers hair. Together the two closed their eyes as sleep overtook them.

“Adam.” He heard his name being called again, jarring him from his sleep. His eyes shot open as he felt his small bundle being taken from his arms. His eyes met Marie’s as she held the squirming child to her chest.

“Sorry, must a fallen asleep. I’m up.” Adam said, pushing himself out of the chair.

“Adam, I wanted to apologize. I was completely out of hand in there, and you didn’t deserve that. I’m sorry I took my frustrations out on you.” Marie said looking into his eyes, hoping for forgiveness.

“Doesn’t matter. I’m okay.” Adam said trying to move around her.

“Adam please. Just talk to me.” She said reaching out to him again.

“What do you want me to say?” He asked, pausing as her hand touched his shoulder.

“You know I love you boys right? I just was tired. I know it’s no excuse……..”

“Yeah okay. May I go now?” He whispered, just wanting to get away.

The look in her eyes made him wince with guilt. She looked so fragile.

“It’s okay really.” He said softly.

She released her grip on his shoulder and he slid away. She watched him enter the barn, just as Hoss came up behind her, pulling her dress.

“I remember it being pretty hard on the both of us.” Adam said shaking his head clear of those memories.

“Why don’t you go check on your brother in the barn. Ella and I have some catching up to do.” Ben said smiling, his eye’s shining in the morning light.

“Sure, your oldest son comes home and all you want to do is talk to his wife. I know where I’m not wanted. Be good you, don’t tell him anything he doesn’t already know.” Adam said with a grin as he winked at his wife and patted his father on the shoulder on the way out.

Ella giggled as her husband made a grand exit out of the house, turning to them and tipping his hat. She liked these morning’s when he was playful. She turned to Ben who was handing her a cup of coffee as he sat next to her on the settee. She took his hand in hers and smiled. Her parents had been dead a long time now, this man she now regarded as her father.

“So, what is it you needed to speak to me about?” Elizabeth asked, her eye’s twinkling knowing what was coming.

“Well, I was thinking of throwing a party, someone’s birthday is coming soon.” Ben took a sip of his coffee, watching for her reaction.

“That’s not for two months yet Ben. What kind of party were you thinking?” Elizabeth laughed, parties were definitely her cup of tea.

“Nothing elaborate, just a few friends coming to celebrate. I don’t want him to know what we are up to so I decided we better get the plans rolling now before he becomes suspicious.” His eyebrows raised he watched the wheels begin to spin in her head. He could already see over 100 guests, streamers and decorations everywhere.

“Why are you looking at me that way?” Ella laughed, slapping her hand on his knee.

“Because I can already see you planning. Remember, nothing elaborate okay.” Knowing his words were useless, he leaned back against the settee and settled in for her explanation of how this party would run.

“Hey brother.” Adam said entering the barn.

“Adam. Kinda late this morning aren’t ya. I’m so hungry I could eat this here horse. You’re the cause of that!” Hoss said stepping menacingly towards his brother.

“Oh yeah, what about your little brother upstairs still sleeping?” Adam said holding his position.

“You gotta point. Maybe we oughtta wake him up a bit.” Hoss said stopping his advance, watching a smile spread across his oldest brother’s face.

“You take the left?” Adam asked, turning to exit the barn.

“Always do older brother.” Came the reply as the two started towards the ranch house.

Adam climbed up the pile of logs, placing his hands on the edge of the roof and pulling himself up. Hoss climbed the tree nearby, inching his way out on the limb, keeping his balance until he could step on the roof. The two men met in the center, creeping quietly towards the slightly open window. Adam held his finger to his lips as he slowly pushed the window upwards. He slid in feet first, bracing himself on the window frame. His feet landed quietly on the floor inside. He motioned Hoss to follow, his finger still on his lips, though they now shone a sly smile. Hoss squeezed through the window, wincing when his boots hit the floor a little loudly. Little Joe stirred, and both older brothers dove to the floor next to the mattress. Adam crawled to the edge of the bed, then took his position. The brothers crouched next to the bed, gripping the side of the mattress, Adam whispered the count as they readied for action. One……..two…………three was carefully said, then both pushed upward with all their might, flipping their sleeping brother as well as the mattress upside in the center of the bed. Both scrambled back to the window, Hoss squeezing through first, followed by a laughing Adam as they heard Joe struggling to get himself out from under the mattress. Soft curses could be heard as both men scrambled for their ways down. They met once again at the barn, laying on the hay, laughter echoing off the walls around them. It had been years since they were able to pull that one off. Pulling themselves together, they made their way back towards the house, arms around each other’s shoulders. Working to keep a straight face, they both fought the urge to laugh as they entered the house. Joe ran down the stairs just as the front door closed.

“JOSEPH! SLOW DOWN!” Ben yelled as his youngest barreled down the stairway.

“I’m gonna pound you good!” Joe hollered as he approached his two brother’s whose faces shown innocence.

“JOESPH! STOP NOW! WHAT IS THE MEANING OF THIS?” Ben grabbed Joe’s arm just as he ran by.

“THOSE TWO……….THEY……….JUST WAIT TILL I GET MY HANDS ON YOU!” Joe yelled, stopping his struggle against his father’s hold.

A loud wail was heard in the kitchen, Hop Sing’s ranting grew louder. The kitchen door slammed closed as Hop Sing came into the great room, screaming child in hand.

“You make baby cry! Too much Tom Foolery, you take!” Joe felt the young screaming child pushed into his arms.

Joe loved his nephew dearly, but crying babies always made him nervous. He turned to Ella who shook her head at him, though a smile played in her eyes. He turned towards Adam who put his hands up shaking his hands. “Hop Sing said.” Was his oldest brother’s reply. He turned towards Hoss and his father, both gave him a shrug. Joe eyed the screaming child in his arms and turned towards the stairs.

“Fine! But next time, I’ll just let him cry.” Joe said half-heartedly as he headed to his room, a small bundle in his arms. “I’ll try reading him a story.”

Ben sat on the settee, watching his family interact. He loved these mornings when they’re all together, bantering back and forth. He thought of Adam’s reaction to Hop Sing’s demands, and laughed out loud. Conversation stopped as they all turned towards the Patriarch, waiting for an explanation for this unexplained laughter.

“Hop Sing said!” Was all he could get out before laughter once again over took him. Hoss and Ella looked confused, but both noticed the reddening in Adam’s cheeks. “Pa.” Was all Adam said as he shook his head.

“I’m sorry Adam, I have to tell them.” Ben continued to laugh, Adam stood nervously beside the settee.

“Pa. I……..” Adam began but was interrupted by a unanimous “TELL US!”

Ben wiped the tears from his eyes and patted his oldest shoulders as he settled in to tell the story of long ago.

Ben arrived home late, he had meant to be home before dark, but the debate had lasted for hours. He opened the front door of the house, expecting all to be quiet, but was surprised to find his wife and oldest son waiting up for him.

“Marie?” Ben said as he entered the house. The look on his son’s face told him instantly there would be trouble, but he knew he would listen to both sides of the story.

“I would like to speak to you outside Benjamin.” Marie said, her temper barely in check. Adam hung his head as his father turned towards the door.

They headed outside, Marie stomping in front of him. It was then that he noticed she was covered from head to toe in some slimy substance.

“Ben! Do you have any idea what your son’s have been up to today?” She nearly hollered as the door closed.

“No, I can’t say as I do. What is all over you?” Ben tried not to laugh as drops of gooey liquid stood out on her forehead.

“I have been working on that house all day, cleaning it from top to bottom. Living in a house full of men is no party for me you know! Your son was supposed to be watching his brother while I finished the polishing. Next thing I know I’m covered in this….this……this glop!”

Ben nodded as his wife changed from English to French, and he could no longer follow the conversation.

“TAKE CARE OF IT!” Was the last thing he heard as once again the front door slammed.

He stood silently shaking his head. Marie was quick to temper and quick to forgive. He knew she would be okay by morning, but the situation at hand needed dealt with. He opened the door carefully and entered the kitchen where his oldest son sat, nervously fidgeting.

“Hi Pa.” Came the eleven year olds reply as his father sat across from him.

“Would you care to tell me what happened son?” Ben asked, trying to keep his tone light.

“Well, it’s a long sad story Pa.” Adam said, stalling as best he could.

“We have all night.” Ben smiled as his son pulled on his left ear lobe, and ran a hand through his hair.

“Well, ya see. I was watching Hoss play in the living room, but then he fell asleep. So I came into the kitchen to see what Hop Sing was doing. He was peeling potato’s, so I decided to ask him some questions about his country. He told me about how his ancestors have certain traditions.”

Adam paused now, his mind turning in thought reflected in his golden brown eyes. “Adam.” Ben reminded, knowing if left alone, he could be stuck for an hour while his son was lost in thought.

“Oh, sorry Pa.” Adam said, his eyes flashing back to the present.

“Okay son.” Ben smiled, waiting for the rest of the story.

“Well, he told me about his parents, and how they died. And I asked him what they did with them. Did you know we are one of few countries that bury their dead Pa?” Adam asked, his eyes brightening with new knowledge.

“Yes son, please continue.” Ben tried to stifle his laugh at his son’s innocent expression.

“Anyway, we started talking about spirits and things, and Hop Sing said that in his country, it was custom to sometimes place pigs blood over the door to ward off evil spirits from entering.”

Recognition crossed Ben’s face as he realized what that sticky substance covering his wife may be.

“So, Hop Sing went to the garden, and I thought maybe we could use a little protection, you know, cause we’re all the way out here in the middle of nowhere.”

Ben nodded for him to continue.

“So, I got a bucket of water. We don’t have any pigs Pa. And I put some of Hop Sings red dye in it to make it look like blood. Then I needed something from a pig, so I put some of our Bacon grease in there from Hop Sings stash. I mixed it all up and set it above the door. I wanted to be sure the spirits would be tricked, since it wasn’t real pigs blood.”

“And Marie came through that door.” Ben said, putting his head in his hands.

“Uh huh. I meant to warn everyone that I was warding off bad spirits, but she came through before I could tell her.”

“You put water, dye, and bacon grease above the door to ward off evil spirits.” Ben said, now rubbing his temples.

“Yes sir.”

“Why did you think we had evil spirits?”

“I didn’t.”

“Then why did you put that above the door?”

“Just in case Pa.” Adam said with all seriousness of an eleven year old.

“But………” He was interrupted by his son pulling on his sleeve.

“Pa. Hop Sing said!” Was Adam’s reply, defending his position all the way.

“Go to bed Adam, we’ll finish this discussion in the morning.” Ben said, again fighting laughter at the seriousness in his sons expression.

“You gonna spank me Pa?” Adam asked, his hands already covering his bottom.

“No son, I just want to make sure you understand never to do this again.”

“Oh I won’t Pa. Too many people come in and out of these doors. I figure the spirits will just follow one of us in. No way to protect us Pa, we’ll just have to pay attention.”

“Go to bed Adam.”

“Yes sir.”

Ben watched his son walk away. He smiled as he went along. It was not often that Adam got lost in the wonderment of a child’s world. In a way, he was glad to know the child was still gullible. He stood slowly, pushing his chair back and looking around the area of the encounter. Hop Sing had cleaned the mess well, but the bucket sat next to the door, remnants of a child’s attempts to protect his family washed away. He picked up the bucket and took it to the barn, out of the sight of his wife. This would be one long night, his wife trying hard to rid her hair and clothes of bacon grease and dye.

Little Joe’s contagious giggle rang out as Ben finished his story.

“Shut up Joe.” Adam said, his eyes turning dark.

“Hop Sing Said!” Joe howled.

“Joe, I’m warning you. Drop it.”

“No way older brother. I can just picture your face……..” Joe stopped talking as Adam came forward towards him.

“Adam! I have your baby, now don’t do anything stupid.” Joe stepped backwards, recognizing that look in his brother’s eyes. “Adam, I mean it now. You wouldn’t fight me with your son in my arms now would you!” Joe said holding a smiling Eric out in front of him.

Adam took the baby from his arms, and gave him a kiss on the forehead. “You wouldn’t laugh at your daddy now would ya kiddo.” Adam said, looking into his son’s dark eyes. Eric giggled at his father’s expression and babbled his reply just as Hop Sing called the family in for breakfast.

Chapter 5

Breakfast was finished, the rest of the family had gone outside. Eric lain down for his nap, now producing soft snores from his crib. Adam sat next to the crib, he watched his baby sleeping soundly, his heart filled with overwhelming love, wonderment and worry. He stood up placing a hand on the sleeping child’s back, filling the rise and fall of his breathing.

Ben watched from the door as his son sat stroking his grandchild. When had he gotten this old he thought. To have a son with a son was quite foreign in his mind, he still felt twenty-five himself. He saw a picture of himself, much younger than Adam was when Eric was born, standing over Adam’s crib, feelings swirling through him. Adam sat back down, not noticing his father’s entrance, and stared hard at his child.

“What you doing son?” Ben asked, placing a hand on his oldest son’s shoulder.

“Pa?” Adam said, his face showing all the emotions of a loving father.

“Yes?”

“How’d you do it? How’d you get through raising all three of us basically on your own?” Adam asked, looking his father in the eye as he sat down next to him, scooting his chair to face him.

“I was never alone Adam.”

The statement spoke volumes, as father and son connected in understanding. Adam had a nurse the first few years of his life, then he became a companion to his father. Inger came along after that, then they were helped by the people on the wagon train after her loss. Adam helped raise his siblings as best he could, acting many times as a second father to them. After the death of Marie, Adam had left for college, and Hoss became his father’s right hand man. He was right, he was never alone.

“Did you ever feel alone though?” Adam asked, sitting back in his chair and glancing at his son.

“Sure, there were times I struggled with you boys, wondering if my punishment was adequate enough, or too harsh. I made my share of mistakes, but I never gave up trying my best to learn from you boys as we went along. By the time Joe came along, I thought I’d known what I was doing. Well, Joseph defiantly proved me wrong on occasion, he was his own person as each of you are in your own way. The hardest part of raising you boys was developing the ability to live and let learn.

“What if something happens to him Pa? I can’t live without him, what if I’m not the father he wished I was?” Adam stood, pacing the room.

“What brought this on son?” Ben asked, going to his son and putting a hand on his shoulder.

“I don’t know Pa, sometimes I look at him and I don’t feel like I can ever do enough for him. Sometimes I’m afraid I’ll mess everything up. I love him so much, I want to protect him from the world, I just feel so helpless.” He fought the tears he felt stinging his eyes. He wiped them away, wondering what caused this eruption in the first place.

“You’re tired son, that’s all. Your stressed out, and tired. Why don’t you go lay down, and I’ll tell Ella where you are. We’ll go for a picnic, give you some time alone.” Ben pulled his son into a tight embrace, patting and rubbing his back until the tears stilled.

“Pa.” Came Adam’s muffled reply, talking into his father’s vest.

“Son?”

“I love you.” He said, then pushed away, walking out of the room and down the hall to his old room. “Night Pa.”

“Good night Adam, have a good rest. Oh, and I love you too.”

Sleep overtook him quickly. He had a dreamless sleep, waking up feeling reenergized after just a few hours. He heard a soft cry, and headed towards his sleeping son’s room.

Eric lay in his crib, unsure of exactly where he was. This wasn’t his room at home, he must be at Pa’s house. He liked the way the old man spoke, the smile that was always in his eyes when he looked at him, the way his hair was that odd color. He looked sort of like his daddy, and sometimes he yelled like him too. Eric let out another whimper, hoping for some attention when he heard the door open. He glanced over to the door way and saw his daddy standing there, his hair was standing up in places, and Eric guessed he had needed a nap too. He cooed his pleasure at seeing his father’s face and reached out his arms.

“Hey little buddy, you just wake up too?” Adam asked, scooping the child into his arms.

Eric grabbed his father’s nose, then patted his cheeks. He told him about a dream he had, his soft bear had snuck up on one of Hoss’s kitties, the kitties told them to follow, and soon they were in a giant room with a fireplace. It was quite warm in that room.

Adam smiled as his son babbled away, his story sounding interesting. Adam wondered what he was saying, knowing Eric thought his father understood. He carried him down to the great room, and Eric leaned as far as he could towards the floor to let his father know he wanted down.

“You want down?” Adam asked, laughing at his son’s insistence.

“Da!” Eric replied, leaning forward again, a whine on his lips.

Adam set him on the floor, the child instantly flipped over, laying on his back he pushed with his feet trying to reach the large fireplace that matched the one in his dream.

Adam scooped him back up and laid him on his stomach, propping him up on his knees. Eric held his position, and rocked back and forth, watching the fire dance in front of him.

“C’mon baby, move those knee’s, like this remember.” Adam helps Eric alternate his legs, Eric laughing as he moves forward. Not realizing his father had let go, his adventure continued, legs moving him forward.

Making it to the hearth, he pulled himself upward to peak over the side.

“Careful buddy, hot.” Adam warned, enjoying his son’s adventure.

Eric watched the flames dance a little longer, beginning to reach his small hands toward the fire. He felt them get warm, and looked at his fingers in surprise. Reaching forward again, his fingers became warm once again. Turning towards his father he babbled his predicament.

“I know it’s hot. Gotta keep your hands away from the flame though.” Adam said kneeling next to his son.

Eric continued to reach for the fire, Adam knowing he would never be able to reach the flames from this distance. Looking back at his father, Eric babbled his question.

“If its so hot, why is it so pretty?” The baby questioned, everyone liked to touch pretty things.

“I know it looks nice, but it is really dangerous.” Adam said, trying to figure out what his son was saying.

Eric backed away now, getting back on his hands and knees without thought. He crawled towards the kitchen in search of his friend Hop Sing.

Chapter 6

“So how’s the planning coming?” Ben asked Elizabeth as he sat down to dinner.

“Sshh, he may hear you.” She whispered, leaning towards him. “It’s coming along nicely. I ordered him a new guitar from New York, it even has his name engraved into it.”

“From New York huh. He had a guitar from New York once, but it was broken shortly after he received it.” Ben laughed recalling the way the guitar was broken over Hoss’s head by the ‘woman of fire’.

“Well this one better not be broken, or I’ll break him. It took me a lot of time to get that order through.” She said with a look of annoyance. “How’d he break it anyway?”

“You’ll have to ask him that one my dear.” Ben smiled, that story was one that was reminisced about often.

“Dinner looks excellent sweetie.” Adam said, sitting Eric in his high chair that his uncle Hoss had made for him.

Eric smiled and gurgled his pleasure at the meal in front of him. He waited to be served before grabbing the potato’s in his fist.

“Hey, hey! Slow down.” Hoss said laughing. “You forget to feed that boy today brother?”

“Yeah right. He may be small, but he can probably out eat all of us.” Adam laughed, watching his son scoop handful after handful of potato’s into his mouth.

“Adam?” Ella said looking to her husband, waiting for his attention.

“Yes?”

“Would you mind taking Eric into town with you tomorrow? I have a few things I need to get done, and it would be really helpful.” She blinked her eyes at him, her long lashes fanning her cheeks.

“Sure. I don’t mind. He can help me out with that railroad contract. Right buddy, you’re good with people aren’t you.” Adam smiled, leaning towards his son who returned the smile with a mouth full of potato’s.

Ella leaned back, her mind whirling with ideas of how she’d decorate for the party. She thought of the streamers and lanterns, the tables covered with cloth. She caught Ben’s eyes as he winked at her, knowing her plans. Joe caught the wink, cocking his head sideways between his sister-in-law and father.

Chapter 7

“C”MON HOPSING!” Ella hollered as she rushed around trying to make sure her house looked immaculate.

“Hop sing come. No yell! You Cartwright’s always yell.” Hop sings rants turned to his native language as he followed Elizabeth around, lighting the candles that stood on the tables.

“It’s looking very nice Elizabeth. The guests are arriving on time. This party is turning out very well.” Ben said, walking over to her after mingling with the arriving guests.

“But where is Adam? He should have been back by now.” She said, pushing her stray hairs back out of her face. He loved it when she wore her hair down. She however spent most of her time fighting with it.

“He’ll be here. He probably had to stop to tend Eric. You know how he hates riding in the wagon.” Joe said coming up behind them. “I can’t believe you were able to keep this party a secret for so long!”

“Yeah! How’s come me and Joe couldn’t be in on it?” Hoss asked, giving Joe a slight nudge.

“We sure were disappointed to know you didn’t trust us enough to help.” Joe said, eye’s wide and his head nodding up and down.

“Oh shut up you two! Ella whispered, pointing her finger.

“Shut up…………“ Joe tried to interrupt.

“You know very well why I didn’t tell you. Your father and I remember what happened last time you were trusted with a secret.” Joe and Hoss’s face reflected innocence as she waved her finger at them.

“That’s right boys. The whole town new that Adam was getting that new breed of horse before I even knew!” Ben said patting Joe and Hoss on the back, leading them towards the guests.

“Eric. I don’t know what else to do little buddy. The wheel broke, no one has come down this road, and there is no way I can fix it. I knew I should have fixed this stupid wheel before we chanced it.” Adam said, watching his son crawl in the dirt.

“Somebody has to come by soon. This is a pretty busy road usually. Till then, I guess we could start walking.”

Eric babbled his reply, stopping for a moment to pick up the ant in front of him.

“No…….no.” Adam said, stooping down, but just missing grabbing the ant before it entered his son’s mouth. “Eric, that’s a no. We don’t eat things off the ground. Yuck!” Adam said as the ant appeared on his son’s tongue. He reached for it, but not before Eric pulled his tongue back in and swallowed.

“Let’s go.” Adam said gruffly, lifting his son to his shoulders and starting down the road.

“Maybe he got held up in town. I’m sure he’s on his way.” Ben tried to soothe as Elizabeth paced back and forth in front of the cake.

“What could those two be doing! The guests are getting restless.” She said, her face flush as she paced.

Ben looked to the guests who were all engaged in one area or another. Know one seemed to notice that the man of honor was not present. “Listen, why don’t I send Hoss to see if he doesn’t meet them half way.”

“Then he’ll know something is up!” She cried, frustration reaching its peak.

“No he won’t. He’ll just think we’re checking on him because he is running late.” Ben said, rubbing her back, hoping to stop the pending tantrum. His daughter in law sure could throw a dusey.

“Fine.” She whispered, trying to keep her temper in check.

“You’re getting heavy young man.” Adam said, removing his squirming son from his shoulders and sitting down. “We need a rest.”

“Rea!” Eric shouted, happy to be back on the ground.

“Stay right here with me now.” Adam warned as his son crept behind the tree they rested against.

“Da.” Eric said, creeping a little further. He could see something in the distance he was sure was a type of treasure his uncle Joe and he would always find.

“Eric.” Adam warned again, waiting for his son to obey.

Eric continued his journey, getting closer and closer to that shiny object off in the distance.

“I said stay with me.” Adam grumped, picking up his son, holding him in his arms.

Eric screamed his protest, kicking his legs and squirming to get out of his father’s arms.

“Da! Da!” He screamed.

“No down. I told you to stay put and you didn’t listen. You can just sit with me young man.” Adam scolded, holding onto his squirming son.

“NO!” Eric yelled back.

Adam stared at his son. Had he just spoken his first clear word. Ella was going to be so disappointed she missed it, he smiled.

“Let’s go.” He returned his face to one of no argument as he stood, once again headed towards home.

“I found the wagon Pa, but Adam and Eric were not there. I searched up and down that darn road.” Hoss nearly yelled, worry overtaking him for his brother and nephew. “We need to send out a search party Pa.”

“Roy!” Ben yelled. “Guests, we need your help.”

Everyone turned to look as Ben began to speak.

“Adam and Eric are missing. They were running late, Hoss found the wagon, but the two of them were no where in sight. We need to form a search party.”

The crowed murmured as people began to speculate. The men began to split into groups.

“Meet back here.” Ben yelled as the crowed dispersed.

“I’m going with you.” Elizabeth yelled running up behind Ben. “You have to let me go!”

“Ella, I want you to stay here. It’s dark, I don’t want you out there. Adam wouldn’t stand for it, you know that.” He spoke calmly, brushing the tears from her cheek. “We’ll find him.”

She watched him ride off in search of her husband and son. Hop Sing grabbed her arm leading her back towards the house. Her tears flowed freely as she moved along with him, praying her son and husband were alright.

“Alright kiddo, I hear you.” Adam said, frustration starting to get the best of him. They had been walking for hours now. The Ponderosa loomed to the left of them, only about another hours walk. His home was to the right of them, another three hour walk.

“You’re right. Let’s go to Grandpa’s house, we can take the wagon from there.”

“What do you mean there’s no sign of them.” Elizabeth screamed. She had been up all night waiting. The party returning as the sun came up.

“We looked all over. We came back for fresh horses.” Hoss said, leading his worn out Chubb into the barn. “We’re going back out in a minute. I have to stop by the house for supplies.”

“I’m going with you Hoss. I can’t just sit here any longer, I’m going crazy!” She practically screamed, grabbing tightly onto his arm.

“Okay, Alright. I’ll saddle Daisy for ya.” He said, prying her fingers from his arm.

She turned her back and ran, wanting to change into her riding clothes before he changed his mind.

“You coming in, or staying out here? I’m just gonna grab a few things before we head back out.” Hoss said, his eye’s tired, but his conviction strong. “We won’t stop again until we find them.”

“I’m coming in.” Ella said, surprised at the fierce determination she heard in his voice.

The two walked wordlessly towards the ranch house. Hoss’s memories of he and his brother running in the yard, looking after Joe, growing into men loomed all around him. Tears touched his eyes as he worried for the two.

Hoss made for the stairs quickly, wanting to get out again as soon as he could.

“HOSS!” Ella yelled, causing him to trip on the stairs.

“What! What is it?”

“Here! They’re here!” She cried, running over to the settee which held her husband and son who jumped to attention when she yelled. “ADAM!
