Enjoy!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong><br \/>\nScars That Distort Reality<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><i>Early July 1863<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThere!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It took Joe shouting in his ear to pull Adam back to reality. As the thick sheets of rain continued to stuff his head with cotton, it was all too easy to zone out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The gaping hole in his side wasn\u2019t doing him any favors, either.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Biting back a grimace, Adam nodded, urging Sport forward and following his little brother toward the cave. How the kid had spotted it in the storm, he\u2019d never know.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maybe if you weren\u2019t so distracted all the time, you would\u2019ve seen it, too.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Doubt it.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Somehow, the cave was just tall enough to fit their horses, and just deep enough not only to give them adequate shelter from the rain but to add a somewhat creepy feeling to the atmosphere.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Joe was at his side mere seconds after he dismounted. \u201cYou all right, Adam?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">His smirk fell short, he could just tell by its feel, and he nodded once more. \u201cFine, Joe.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I\u2019ll be just fine\u2026<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cYou don\u2019t <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">look<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> fine,\u201d the kid shot back with a frown and it was all Adam could do to keep from rolling his eyes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;All right, I&#8217;m <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">not<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> fine then. Help me sit down over there, will you?&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As Joe aided Adam in his descent against the wall, he chattered a bit, trying to fill the blaring silence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Breathe.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Just <\/span><\/i><b><i>breathe<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> so you don&#8217;t scare him more than you already\u2014<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The hiss slipped out before he could bite half his tongue off in a vain attempt at stopping it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;I&#8217;m fine,&#8221; he told Joe&#8217;s worried face. &#8220;I&#8217;ll be fine&#8230;&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Always so sure of yourself, aren&#8217;t you, Cartwright?<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Oh, shut up.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He was already fighting a bullet to the gut, he didn&#8217;t need to fight the voice as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">That&#8217;s the <\/span><\/i><b><i>last<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> thing I need right now.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The voice had gotten pretty good at sticking around; at popping up during the worst possible times.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And Adam was getting pretty bad shooing it away. What used to be a relatively easy task had become damned near impossible as of late.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You&#8217;re weak, Cartwright. That&#8217;s why.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You always have been, always will be.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Right\u2026<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;Adam?&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Snapping back to attention was his only indicator that he had been on the verge of getting lost again. Lost in his own thoughts, in the torment that just wouldn&#8217;t leave him alone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the shroud of that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">voice&#8230;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;What?&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You know what.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Joe&#8217;s brows creased. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You&#8217;re gonna give that kid elevens before he&#8217;s even twenty five.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;You zoned out on me for a second there.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He tried for a laugh that ended as a grimace and Adam braced himself for the next wave of pain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Because Joe was reaching toward his wound\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It was going to hurt like hell, he knew that from experience. He also had practice in not letting the pain show, no matter how hot or sharp it grew to be.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;Looks like it went clean through,&#8221; Joe observed after a few moments\u2014moments that felt for all the world to Adam like hours. Long agonizing <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">hours.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It was all he could do to bite out a reply. &#8220;That&#8217;s good.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;Man, those guys came out of nowhere.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">They always do.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I did, didn&#8217;t I, Cartwright?<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Shut. Up.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maybe you would&#8217;ve seen them coming if you\u2019d stop spending so much time trapped in your own mind.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Right. And who trapped me there, exactly?<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Who?<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b><i>Who?<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;Adam&#8230;?&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Blinking didn&#8217;t do much but simulate life, even though Adam had felt dead inside for some time now.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;I&#8217;m still here, Joe. Always have been.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The look Joe gave him was less than reassuring, but his baby brother kept on working all the same. Tying parts of his jacket around Adam&#8217;s stomach; hurrying to staunch the bleeding before it got any worse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And running his mouth double time to keep the eerie silence at bay.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Any silence with Adam in the room these days was far from comfortable\u2014he knew that for a fact. After all, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">he <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">wasn\u2019t comfortable in those hesitant, cautious silences, so why would any of his family be?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Just another thing you have to fix\u2026<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Thunder clapped outside, a cruel reminder that they were stuck in that blasted cave for the foreseeable future.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI think\u2026\u201d The amount of concentration on Joe\u2019s face was almost painful to look at. \u201cI <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">think <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I got it under control before it could get worse\u2026 Hold on a second\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Worse? How could it possibly get any <\/span><\/i><b><i>worse?<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You really want me to answer that, Cartwright?<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At last, Joe sat back on his heels, wiping a bloody hand across his forehead. &#8220;There. That should hold for now.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As he studied his brother\u2019s handiwork, Adam wondered when he would stop getting ambushed in the desert.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We weren&#8217;t even carrying any cash this time.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Do you really think rustlers are going to stop to think about that?<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;Thanks, Joe,&#8221; he managed through a sigh, shifting into a more comfortable position. Or, trying to, at least. &#8220;You all right?&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;Yeah, I&#8217;m fine. They didn&#8217;t even graze me.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;Good.&#8221; Adam let his eyes flutter closed for a moment. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Just a moment\u2026<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> When he opened them, Joe was gone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A mere glance to the side revealed the kid had just gone to check on the horses, soothing his precious Paint, but the jolt his sudden absence had sent through Adam lingered on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You never should\u2019ve left him back at Eastgate.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maybe then, none of this would\u2019ve happened.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Shut\u2014<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Try as he might, Adam couldn\u2019t reconcile with the odd contrast that had taken over his life lately: the need to be left alone, and the overwhelming, almost panicky urge to not be deserted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To not be left alone in the desert to die with no family or friends or\u2014<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You&#8217;re fine. It&#8217;s <\/span><\/i><b><i>fine.<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Joe&#8217;s fine\u2026<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Speaking of the kid\u2026 Joe had wandered around a bit, making his restlessness known before plopping back down beside Adam.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;I&#8217;d build a fire, but&#8230;&#8221; Joe jerked his head at the mouth of their stoney prison.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;It&#8217;s okay.&#8221; And it took a good portion of his already dwindling energy to keep the edge of pain out of his voice. &#8220;I don&#8217;t think we&#8217;ll be here long.&#8221; At Joe&#8217;s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">you&#8217;ve got to be kidding me<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> look, Adam couldn&#8217;t help but chuckle. A poor choice, considering it rattled his throbbing wound. &#8220;The power of positive thinking.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;Oh.&#8221; Joe slumped, elbows resting atop his knees. &#8220;Right. Figured you were gonna say something dumb like that.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Much as he wanted to slap that smirk off Joe&#8217;s face, Adam restrained himself, flashing a smirk of his own instead and praying to God it didn&#8217;t look more like a grimace.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;Even if you hadn&#8217;t been shot,&#8221; Joe went on, a pinch of worry still swirling around his overly casual tone, &#8220;we would&#8217;ve had to stop anyway. I couldn&#8217;t even see my hand in that storm.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As a shiver wracked Joe&#8217;s lanky frame, it occured to Adam that he should probably feel guilty. The kid&#8217;s only source of warmth was wrapped around <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">his<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> midsection and Adam couldn&#8217;t have snaked off his own jacket if he tried.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Yet, the guilt wouldn&#8217;t come. It couldn&#8217;t seem to push itself through the thick layers of unease, of anxiety\u2026 of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">foreboding.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When he closed his eyes, he could feel it. The dense air, the suffocating heat. The sweat pouring down his face and neck\u2014<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;Maybe I should just leave you be.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Adam glanced at Joe, snapping out of his thoughts again. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What good is thinking anyway?<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;You keep zoning out on me.&#8221; And there were those furrowed brows\u2026 &#8220;You didn&#8217;t even lose that much blood.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;My mind&#8217;s just on\u2026 other things, I guess.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Joe snorted. &#8220;Yeah, I <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">guessed.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;Like how we&#8217;re going to get home and all that.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;Sure.&#8221; Joe didn&#8217;t believe him, but they both pretended he did.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">They were always pretending these days, weren&#8217;t they?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pretending everything was fine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pretending Eastgate never happened.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pretending everything was going to go back to normal. Eventually.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pretend, pretend, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">pretend.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Like you pretend I&#8217;m still alive.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The second Adam felt his fists clench, he let them go. There wasn&#8217;t any reason to heighten Joe&#8217;s concern.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Like you pretend you didn\u2019t k\u2014<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I <\/span><\/i><b><i>didn&#8217;t<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> kill you. You <\/span><\/i><b><i>know<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> that.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I know a lot of things, Cartwright. I know you still feel guilty about it, about everything.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And you and I <\/span><\/i><b><i>both<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> know I&#8217;m never going away.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;Shut up.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Joe shifted beside him. &#8220;I wasn&#8217;t saying anything.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Damn.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If he could just keep the battle <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">inside<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> his head, then everything would be a little easier, but reality was so hard to weed out of the noise inside his mind these days\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;Just ignore me, Joe,&#8221; he sighed, giving the bridge of his nose a good pinch.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;You know,&#8221; Joe cocked his head, &#8220;if you keep telling me to do that, pretty soon you won&#8217;t exist anymore.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maybe that&#8217;s for the best.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;So, I guess it&#8217;s a good thing I don&#8217;t listen to you.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;You never have.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;Aw, come on. I listened to you sometimes.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;Right. When it didn&#8217;t matter. And when it <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">did<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> matter, you <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">didn&#8217;t.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A shrug was the best Joe could offer. &#8220;What can I say? It can&#8217;t be.&#8221; <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Too good to be true. Too good to be\u2014<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Never trust anything that seems too good to be true.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cYeah, looks like it. Usually I hate it when you\u2019re right, but I think we might not have to stay here long after all! Just like you said.\u201d Jumping to his feet, Joe continued, \u201cI&#8217;m gonna go out and try to see where we are. Maybe we&#8217;re not as far from home as we thought.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The hope in Joe&#8217;s eyes was akin to a physical blow to Adam&#8217;s chest, which had begun to struggle at doing its job.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;Don&#8217;t go out there, you&#8217;ll get completely soaked.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A weak argument at best, proven all the weaker when Joe flashed that grin of his.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;I&#8217;m already wetter than a fish, Adam. Can&#8217;t get any worse than <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">this.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8221; To prove his point, he ran a hand through his sopping curls.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And Adam&#8217;s chest <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">burned.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> That old unease returning full-force, the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">foreboding<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> that had made its home in the back of his mind ever since\u2014<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The dusty, sweat-soaked shirt tugged at his side as he shifted. Tying it tight like that used to keep out the dirt and grime, but now it only worked to rub his skin raw.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Don&#8217;t go out there. Don&#8217;t\u2014<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There was a reason <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">why not,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> a good reason. One he just couldn&#8217;t seem to remember.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But Joe was already halfway there. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Halfway out of this hell, yet halfway to\u2014<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;Joe, stop, come back!&#8221; He hissed, keeping his voice low because\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Because <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">why?<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;Come on, Adam, I&#8217;m just gonna check things out. I swear, I&#8217;ll only be a few minutes.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;It&#8217;s not a good idea,&#8221; Adam pressed, fighting to keep his chest working.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">How were they expected to breathe in here when the air was so hot and thick?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cJust getting a breath of fresh air before I keel over in that oven\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWell, don\u2019t take all day about it.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Joe&#8217;s brows dipped again. &#8220;I&#8217;ll be real quick. He&#8217;s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">always<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> waiting out there, and if you go out, he&#8217;ll get you!&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The air went from thick to unbearable as thunder rolled in the distance, followed by a streak of lightning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It lit up the cave and Adam could <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">see.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There&#8217;s nothing out there but rain, you imbecile.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The sweat trailing down his back was just droplets of rainwater.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And his tightly tied shirt was Joe&#8217;s jacket covering his wound. Not keeping out the dust of the desert.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Not\u2026\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;Damn it.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The whisper split the silence as reality came crashing down on top of him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;Adam?&#8221; Joe&#8217;s voice didn&#8217;t tremble; it didn&#8217;t bleed with pity; it wasn&#8217;t <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">cautious.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It wasn&#8217;t even worried. Joe took this to be the end of the conversation, though he lingered a moment more before going out to brave the storm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Which, Adam realized, truly <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">had<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> begun to let up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Right.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When was <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">his <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">storm going to let up?
