Its rays sprinkled calm orange light across the green fields of the ranch announcing the end of a long strange day. Although everything suggested that it was a peaceful evening, it was far from being that way, as the atmosphere around the main house of the ranch was silently tense.

Apart from the Sheriff’s horse and doctor Paul Martin’s buggy there was not a single soul around the yard. Even the hands were clustered in the bunkhouse talking with astonishment about the resent events that had taken place at the Ponderosa ranch. All of them remembered Jeremy Wheeler as a nice kind man; therefore it was hard to believe that he had treated Adam Cartwright so brutally, but it was harder to accept that a sweet tender lady like Molly could have shot him the way she did.

Inside the house, the climate was even more strained. In the main room, Hoss and Joe Cartwright were telling Roy Coffee everything they knew, which was not much. Hoss´s always smiling face was darkened by worry and his bright blue eyes were shadowed. With a strained voice, he was mentioning Coffee that that morning they had been looking for Adam, who had strangely disappeared. They were near the road that led to Virginia City when some shoots gasped their attention leading them towards the woods where Adam and Molly were. Firstly they saw Adam tied to a tree. His chest was covered with blood and he looked hardly beaten, and his appearance scared them. A few yards from Adam, Wheeler’s body lied limply over a puddle of blood.

“ Molly was standing in front of Wheeler’s body carrying Adam’s rifle in her shaking hands,” Joe added as he shook his head. He rose and walked in front of the fireplace impatiently. “ When are they going to come down?” he mumbled uneasy. “ Three hours have passed since Doctor Martin arrived.”

Hoss followed his brother with his eyes until Joe sat on the step of the hearth. Hoss could not wipe Adam’s image from his mind and he wondered if the same was happening to his younger brother. They had seen Adam injured and bleeding before, but nothing compared to this and like Joe, he was loosing his unlimited patience. Hoss moved his eyes to Roy Coffee who was playing with his hat, apparently thinking over what he had heard and according to his serious face the Sheriff was as lost as they were. Hoss raised his eyes to the top of the staircase, wondering what could be happening upstairs.

In the upper floor, Ben Cartwright watched with concern how Paul Martin worked on his eldest son’s beaten body. Ben’s face was a mask of bewilderment as he struggled to understand that what he had seen was not part of a terrifying nightmare. There had been no time for questions when he and the boys had found them, as Adam fell unconsciousness only minutes after he had embraced her, and Molly was trembling and crying hysterically, unaware of what was happening around her. Ben shook his head. As much as he tried to analyze the situation he could not arrive at any logical conclusion. He turned his eyes to Adam’s twisted face when he heard his son groaning. There was dried blood on his cheek and forehead that came from a significant bruise on the right side of his face. Ben frowned while he pressed his lips together with frustration, feeling himself a helpless witness of Adam’s sufferings. Expectantly, he raised his eyes to Paul Martin, but briefly stopped his gaze at the doctor’s shirt, which it had been clean, when he came into the house and at that moment was mostly covered by Adam’s blood. Martin’s eyes were narrowly fixed on Adam’s injuries and the frown on his face showed clearly that he was concentrating fully on what he was doing. He had allowed Ben to stay by Adam’s side only because he was aware of how concerned his friend was, but he made it clear that he would tell him about Adam’s condition once he finished with his work.

Paul Martin straightened and turned to wash his hands with the water in the vessel placed on the night table.
