All three got to their feet to greet their father.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cWelcome home, Pa,\u201d Hoss beamed, clapping Ben on the back as he took his hat and hung it on the peg next to the door.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cWe were beginning to think you\u2019d decided to stay in San Francisco,\u201d Joe teased.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cAnd knowing you were coming home to these two and their antics, who could have blamed you?\u201d Adam added with a playful grin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cIt\u2019s good to be home,\u201d Ben smiled, looking at each of his three sons in turn. \u201cI\u2019ve got a lot to tell you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cAnything go wrong?\u201d Adam asked, his expression going from teasing to serious in the blink of an eye.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cNo, nothing\u2019s wrong,\u201d Ben assured him with a hand on his arm. \u201cIn fact, things couldn\u2019t be more right.\u201d He looked as though he was about to say more, but instead turned toward the dining room. \u201cI haven\u2019t missed breakfast, have I? I\u2019m starved!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">His three sons exchanged slightly surprised glances then followed him to the table. Once seated, Adam was the first to speak. \u201cSo tell us about it,\u201d he suggested casually.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cAbout what?\u201d Ben asked in a light voice, knowing he was evading the question.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cAbout the reason things couldn\u2019t be more right,\u201d Adam answered with a knowing smile. \u201cWhat happened in San Francisco?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Ben seemed to be considering his answer as he heaped eggs and bacon onto his plate. Instead of digging in, he folded his arms in front of him and looked around the table at the expectant faces.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cAll the way home I thought about how to say it,\u201d he began with a nervous laugh. \u201cI guess the best way is just to come out with it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cOut with what?\u201d Joe asked, smiling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cWhat is it, Pa?\u201d Hoss added, Ben\u2019s obvious happiness infecting him as well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Adam didn\u2019t say anything, his small smile indicating that he already had an idea.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cI\u2019ve met a woman,\u201d Ben explained in a quiet voice. \u201cThere\u2019s no way to explain it except to say that it was like meeting a part of myself, a part that\u2019s been missing for a very long time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Joe and Hoss both looked toward the other end of the table where Adam sat, then back at their father. \u201cA gal?\u201d Hoss asked, obviously pleased with the news. \u201cWho is she? What\u2019s she like?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cHer name is Stephanie,\u201d Ben answered, his tone soft as he spoke the name. \u201cStephanie Winegrove. She\u2019s like a breath of spring air on a winter\u2019s night. I never thought I\u2019d feel this way again after Marie died, but\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Joe looked down at his plate at the mention of his mother\u2019s name, then looked up at his father once again, a small smile on his face. \u201cThat\u2019s great, Pa,\u201d he said sincerely.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Ben reached over and grasped his youngest son\u2019s forearm as he looked into the expressive green eyes. \u201cYou know how much I loved her,\u201d he said simply. \u201cI\u2019ve never looked to replace her, not once.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cI know that,\u201d Joe smiled in reassurance. \u201cReally, I\u2019m happy for you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Ben squeezed his arm, smiling with pride and gratitude. \u201cThank you,\u201d he whispered.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cSo, when do we get to meet this woman?\u201d Adam asked, a coy smile playing around his lips.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cShe\u2019ll be here in a day or two,\u201d Ben answered, picking up his fork and napkin. \u201cShe wanted to give me a chance to talk to the three of you. She didn\u2019t think it would be fair to you to just show up unannounced.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cJudgin\u2019 by the smile on your face, I reckon she must be somethin\u2019 special,\u201d Hoss grinned. \u201cCan\u2019t wait to meet her.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cI\u2019d like to make this her home,\u201d Ben replied gently. \u201cI think you should know I\u2019m going to ask her to be my wife.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">The three boys looked at one another, each smiling slightly. \u201cUh, Pa,\u201d Joe began, turning his attention once more to his father. \u201cAfter everything else you\u2019ve said about her, that really didn\u2019t come as a big surprise.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Ben looked from Joe\u2019s teasing smile to that of Hoss, then Adam before bursting into a hearty laugh. \u201cNo, I guess it didn\u2019t at that.\u201d As the boys joined in, they congratulated their father and urged him to tell them more about the woman who would soon be joining their family.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">******<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Hoss was chopping wood the next morning and Joe was stacking it neatly when Adam rode into the yard. Dismounting, the man in black tied his horse near the trough, then made his way toward his brothers, slapping some of the dust from his pants with his hat. \u201cWhere\u2019s Pa?\u201d he asked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cIn town,\u201d Joe grinned, shaking his head slightly. \u201cHe said he had some things to take care of before the stage gets here tomorrow.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Hoss stopped chopping and removed his hat to wipe the sweat from his brow. \u201cI reckon he\u2019s like a school boy with his first crush,\u201d he laughed. \u201cIt sure is good to see him as happy as he is.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Adam looked at Joe who was picking up the last few pieces of wood to add to the pile he\u2019d created. \u201cHow do you feel about it, Joe?\u201d Adam asked quietly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Joe turned to face his brother with an expression of slight surprise. \u201cWhat do you mean how do I feel? Of course I\u2019m happy. I want him to be happy as much as you two.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Adam considered both the words and the sincere way in which they\u2019d been delivered before allowing a smile. \u201cSorry,\u201d he offered. \u201cIt\u2019s just\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Joe noticed his brother\u2019s slight hesitation and offered a reassuring smile. \u201cIt\u2019s just that she\u2019s about to become the first woman around here since my mother,\u201d he offered gently.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cWell, yeah,\u201d Adam replied, shrugging slightly. \u201cI just thought\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cWell, don\u2019t,\u201d Joe assured him. \u201cI think it\u2019s wonderful. I think Ma would too.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Adam smiled at the words. With a small nod, he replied, \u201cYeah, I think she would too.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">The moment was cut short as Ben rode into the yard. Turning, the boys watched him dismount and hurry toward them. \u201cDid Hop Sing finish the room?\u201d he asked anxiously. \u201cEverything\u2019s got to be just right. We don\u2019t have much time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Hoss clamped a hand on his father\u2019s shoulder. \u201cThe room\u2019s perfect, Pa,\u201d he grinned. \u201cHop Sing even said he\u2019d put fresh flowers up there in the morning.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cGood,\u201d Ben nodded, stuffing his fidgeting hands into his pockets. \u201cFlowers are good.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cAnd he\u2019s making a special dinner,\u201d Adam added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cYes, dinner,\u201d Ben mused distractedly. Suddenly, he looked up, his dark eyes wide. \u201cDinner! My suit!\u201d Without another word, he hurried off toward the front door.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cThink he\u2019ll make it to tomorrow?\u201d Joe chortled as they watched their father\u2019s back disappear into the house.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cI\u2019m beginning to wonder,\u201d Adam laughed, shaking his head. \u201cSince his mind seems to be elsewhere, I think I\u2019d better put Buck in the barn.\u201d Still chuckling slightly, he took hold of both Sport\u2019s reins and Buck\u2019s and headed for the barn.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">********<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cWill you stop fidgeting?\u201d Joe quietly urged Hoss as they stood waiting for the stage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cI can\u2019t help it, Joe,\u201d Hoss mumbled miserably. \u201cWe\u2019ve already bin waitin\u2019 an hour and this tie is bound to choke me plumb to death.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cThere it is!\u201d Ben exclaimed, commanding the attention of his three sons. They watched the stage pull in and stood waiting expectantly as their father hurried to open the door.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">The woman who stepped out to greet them was the picture of beauty. Thick auburn hair was swept gracefully up from a smooth, ivory complexion. Lively green eyes twinkled from under long lashes and her smile was warm and welcoming.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cBen,\u201d she smiled as he helped her to the ground.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cStephanie,\u201d Ben greeted her, returning the smile and placing a hand gently on her arm. \u201cI\u2019d like you to meet my sons. This is Adam, Hoss and Joseph.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cMa\u2019am,\u201d the three boys responded in almost perfect unison.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cAdam,\u201d she smiled, taking the eldest son\u2019s hand. \u201cYour father has told me so much about you, about all of you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cWelcome to Virginia City,\u201d Adam smiled, clasping her hand gently.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cHoss,\u201d she continued, moving down the line and taking Hoss\u2019 hand. \u201cIt\u2019s so good to finally meet you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cThe pleasure\u2019s all ours, Ma\u2019am,\u201d Hoss grinned.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cAnd Joseph,\u201d she finished, holding out her hand. \u201cI feel like I know you all already.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cMa\u2019am,\u201d Joe greeted her, flashing his most charming smile.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Turning to Ben, she smiled affectionately. \u201cI have to admit, Ben, I thought you were exaggerating when you first told me of your sons. Now I see you were actually being quite modest. You have three fine boys here.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cThey have their moments,\u201d Ben beamed with a combination of love and pride. \u201cAs you\u2019ll see once you get to know them. Right now, I think we\u2019d best get started for the Ponderosa. It\u2019s still quite a ride and I\u2019m sure you must be tired.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cI\u2019ll get the bags, Pa,\u201d Hoss offered. Once he\u2019d loaded them into the back of the buggy, he took Chubb\u2019s reins from Joe.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Ben helped her into the buggy before climbing into the seat beside her. \u201cJust wait until you see the Ponderosa,\u201d he breathed. \u201cShe\u2019ll take your breath away.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cI can\u2019t wait,\u201d she smiled, squeezing his arm lovingly. With that, Ben coaxed the horses into action, the three boys following in behind.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">********<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Dinner was a pleasant affair with Stephanie hearing many amusing and touching stories of life on the Ponderosa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cI can hardly believe any of this,\u201d she finally stated, looking tenderly into Ben\u2019s eyes. \u201cIt\u2019s like starting a whole new life.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cYes, it is,\u201d Ben replied, taking her hand. \u201cAnd the best part is, we\u2019re starting it together.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Adam cleared his throat gently and once he had both his brothers\u2019 attention, nodded toward the door.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cWe\u2019d best go check on the stock,\u201d Hoss suggested, getting up from the table. \u201cIt\u2019s a good life, but there\u2019s always somethin\u2019 to be done. If you\u2019ll excuse us, Ma\u2019am, Pa.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cPlease, call me Stephanie,\u201d she urged, her eyes dancing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cRight, Miss Stephanie,\u201d Hoss smiled bashfully.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Adam and Joe also excused themselves and all three headed out the front door.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cThey\u2019re very dedicated, aren\u2019t they?\u201d she mused after they\u2019d gone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cYes, they are,\u201d Ben smiled knowingly. \u201cBut I\u2019ll let you in on a little secret. There\u2019s really no stock to check on out there. The only herd on the Ponderosa at the moment is way up in the north pasture.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">She looked at him blankly for a moment before gleaning his words and laughing lightly. \u201cIn that case, I think we\u2019d best make sure their thoughtfulness wasn\u2019t wasted.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Ben got to his feet and took her hand, pulling her gently to a standing position before leading her to the sitting room. Once she was settled comfortably on the settee, he took a seat beside her and took both of her hands in his.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cStephanie, I know we\u2019ve only known each other a short time, but I hope you know how much I truly love you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cI do, Ben,\u201d she replied softly. \u201cBecause I love you too. I think I knew it the first moment we met. After that week in San Francisco, I was sure of it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Ben smiled and squeezed her hands lightly. \u201cTomorrow, I want to show you around the Ponderosa. Once you\u2019ve seen it in all its splendour, I hope you\u2019ll come to love it as much as we do.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cI already love it,\u201d she smiled. \u201cI don\u2019t know when I\u2019ve ever seen anything so beautiful.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">He got down on his knee by her side, looking deeply into her eyes. \u201cThis isn\u2019t the moment I\u2019d planned,\u201d he admitted with a nervous smile. \u201cBut here, in the glow of your love, my heart feels as though it may burst.\u201d He paused a moment to search her eyes. \u201cI want you to stay here with me, Stephanie. I want us to share the rest of our lives here, together.\u201d He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small box. After opening it, he held it out to her, his eyes filled with the promise of tomorrow. \u201cI want you to be my wife. Will you marry me?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Her eyes filled with tears as she looked first at the ring and then at his expectant expression. \u201cYes,\u201d she smiled, touching his face gently. \u201cYes, Ben. I will marry you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">********<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Ben had been concerned that two weeks wouldn\u2019t allow Stephanie enough time to plan things the way she wanted to, but she had assured him on more than one occasion that she already had everything she needed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cWe already have the most romantic setting all around us,\u201d she smiled, gesturing around them at the Ponderosa. \u201cEven with years of planning, I couldn\u2019t have picked a more perfect place to start a new life. As long as you\u2019re there, and Adam and Hoss and Joe, everything will be complete.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cI\u2019ll be there,\u201d he\u2019d assured her, slipping his arms around her waist. \u201cEvery moment for the rest of your life.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">He\u2019d been about to kiss her when Joe walked into the room.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cSorry,\u201d he grinned, trying to feign a sheepish look. \u201cI didn\u2019t mean to interrupt.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Ben chuckled lightly and kissed his bride-to-be on the cheek before turning to his son. \u201cNo apologies necessary,\u201d he smiled.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cI just came in to let you know I\u2019m going to Virginia City. That wheel just can\u2019t take another repair. We\u2019re going to have to replace it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cFine,\u201d Ben nodded. \u201cOrder it from Charlie and tell him we need it as soon as possible, will you?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cSure thing,\u201d Joe nodded, heading once again for the door.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cUh, Little Joe?\u201d Stephanie called as he reached the door.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cHmm?\u201d he responded, turning to face her.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cI was wondering if I might ride into town with you,\u201d she suggested hopefully. \u201cI still have a few things to take care of before the wedding.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cSure,\u201d Joe smiled. \u201cI\u2019ll get the buggy ready.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cNot on my account, I hope,\u201d she smiled. \u201cI mean, if you weren\u2019t planning on taking the buggy, I can ride Shadow.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Joe glanced at his father and smiled slightly. The black mare had been an engagement gift from Ben and each of them had noticed that she never missed an opportunity to ride her.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cThat all right with you, Pa?\u201d Joe asked, still smiling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cI don\u2019t see why not,\u201d Ben shrugged. Turning to Stephanie, he added, \u201cBut if you\u2019d rather, I could go into town with you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cBen,\u201d she smiled, tilting her head slightly to one side. \u201cThere are some things a bride has to take care of herself.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cOf course, darling,\u201d Ben laughed lightly, coming forward to kiss her on the cheek. \u201cYou go along with Little Joe. I\u2019m sure I can find something to do around here while I await your return.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cI\u2019ll go change,\u201d she beamed. Turning to Joe, she promised, \u201cI won\u2019t be a minute.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cI\u2019ll saddle the horses,\u201d Joe grinned, opening the door.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Ben sighed contentedly as he watched her hurry up the stairs. He\u2019d been only slightly worried about how Joe would react to his taking yet another wife, but now he realized his concerns had been unfounded. With a smile of pride, he turned to his desk and the business waiting for him there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">********<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cDo you need some help?\u201d Joe asked as they dismounted and tied their horses to the post in front of the general store.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cI\u2019ll be fine,\u201d she smiled. \u201cGo ahead and do whatever it is you need to do. I\u2019m just going to pick up a few things and run a few errands. How about we meet back here in say, an hour?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cSounds good,\u201d Joe smiled, nodding and touching the brim of his hat. \u201cI\u2019ll see you then.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">After ordering the wheel and being assured by Charlie that it would be in within the week, Joe went to pick up the mail.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cSorry, Little Joe,\u201d the elderly man behind the counter informed him. \u201cMail\u2019s not come in yet. Stage is late.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Joe glanced at the clock on the wall. \u201cOver an hour late,\u201d he murmured. Turning back to the other man, he flashed a smile. \u201cNo problem. I\u2019ll be in town another hour or so. I\u2019ll stop by again before I leave.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Since he still had considerable time to kill before meeting up with Stephanie, he decided to pay a visit to his favorite saloon. As he was about to go in, a familiar sound caught his attention and he turned to see the stage making it\u2019s way slowly into town. His curiosity piqued, he went to meet it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cProblems, Billy?\u201d he called up to the driver once the coach had stopped in front of the station.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cNothin\u2019 serious, Little Joe,\u201d Billy replied as he jumped down from his seat. \u201cBroke an axel \u2018tween here and the last Way Station. I done fixed it good \u2018nuff to get it this far, but I\u2019m gonna need a new one \u2018fore I leave.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">While Billy explained the situation, the passengers disembarked from the stage, most of them looking weary from the extended length of the trip. Joe recognized them all as residents or frequent visitors to Virginia City except one, a sharply dressed gentleman who shot Billy an icy glare before taking his bag and heading for the hotel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cI\u2019m \u2018fraid some didn\u2019t take well to the delay,\u201d Billy muttered, looking after the man.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cWell it wasn\u2019t your fault,\u201d Joe assured him. \u201cI wouldn\u2019t worry about it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cI\u2019m just glad he ain\u2019t goin\u2019 no further,\u201d Billy chuckled wryly. \u201cYou don\u2019t know how glad I was to find he\u2019d be stayin\u2019 here in Virginia City.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cThanks a lot,\u201d Joe grinned good-naturedly. \u201cNice of you to wish him on the rest of us.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cBetter you \u2018n me,\u201d Billy chortled, slapping Joe on the back. \u201cI\u2019d best go see to that axle.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cI\u2019ll be in the saloon,\u201d Joe informed him. \u201cWhile you\u2019re waiting for Johnny to fix it, stop in and I\u2019ll buy you a drink.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cAin\u2019t never said no to a free drink,\u201d Billy smiled. \u201cI\u2019ll meet you there.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Chuckling to himself, Joe continued on his way to the saloon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">It wasn\u2019t long before Billy joined him and they were both enjoying a cold beer. Only a moment after that, the stranger from the stage also entered the saloon and took a table in the corner, immediately pulling a deck of cards from his jacket pocket. Billy noted his presence with an expression of slight disdain before turning his attention back to Joe. \u201cSo what\u2019s new out on the Ponderosa?\u201d he asked. \u201cYour Pa and brothers doin\u2019 well?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Joe smiled. \u201cYou might say Pa\u2019s doing more than well. He\u2019s getting married a week from tomorrow.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Billy leaned back in his chair and flashed Joe a look of sincere surprise. \u201cYour Pa\u2019s tyin\u2019 the knot agin?\u201d he asked incredulously.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cSure is,\u201d Joe grinned. \u201cTo a woman he met in San Francisco. Miss Stephanie Winegrove. She\u2019s here in town now, taking care of some of the last minute details.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cWell I\u2019ll be durned,\u201d Billy breathed, unable to keep a pleased smile from spreading across his face. \u201cYou give your Pa my best wishes will \u2018ya?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cSure will,\u201d Joe beamed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Billy raised his glass. \u201cAnd in the meantime, how\u2019s about a toast to the happy couple.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cI\u2019ll drink to that,\u201d Joe smiled, raising his own glass and touching it to that of his companion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">********<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">By the time the hour was up, Joe had collected the mail and was ready to head back to the Ponderosa. He lingered a moment in front of the general store, casually looking up and down the street for signs of his father\u2019s intended before going inside.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cHey, Little Joe,\u201d Ernie grinned from behind the counter. \u201cMiss Winegrove was in here earlier. Sounds like it\u2019s going to be quite the wedding out there.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cI\u2019m sure it is,\u201d Joe smiled back. \u201cI was supposed to meet her here. Did she say where else she had to go?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cShe mentioned the hotel,\u201d Ernie replied. \u201cSaid she had some friends coming in for the wedding and wanted to know the best place for them to stay. I think she went down there to make arrangements.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cThanks,\u201d Joe nodded. Leaving the store, he headed in the direction of the hotel. Expecting to find her at the desk in the lobby, he was surprised when she was nowhere in sight.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cHi, Jack,\u201d Joe smiled at the man behind the desk. \u201cI\u2019m looking for Miss Winegrove. Was she here?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cStill is, Little Joe,\u201d Jack answered, nodding his head. \u201cShe went up to check on the rooms for her friends. Rooms 14, 15 and 16.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cThanks,\u201d Joe nodded, already heading for the stairs. Once on the second floor, he made his way to the end of the first corridor and turned the corner only to stop dead in his tracks. The man and woman before him quickly took a step away from one another but not before Joe had a chance to catch a glimpse of what could only be construed as an intimate embrace.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cWhy, Little Joe,\u201d Stephanie smiled nervously. \u201cWhatever are you doing here?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Joe looked at the man, instantly recognizing him as the one who\u2019d arrived by stage only an hour earlier. Turning his attention to Stephanie, he didn\u2019t bother trying to force a smile. \u201cI was about to ask you the same question,\u201d he replied in a low voice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cForgive me, Little Joe,\u201d Stephanie suddenly exclaimed. \u201cThis is Charles Dunn, a dear friend of mine from San Francisco. Charles, this is Ben\u2019s youngest son, Joseph.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cMr. Dunn,\u201d Joe nodded, not bothering to offer his hand. Turning to Stephanie, he added, \u201cI\u2019ll be downstairs when you\u2019re ready to head back to the ranch.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">She glanced at Charles briefly before flashing a nervous smile at Joe. \u201cNo, I\u2019m ready now. Everything is arranged that can be at this point. I\u2019ll go down with you.\u201d She turned to Charles and toned her smile down somewhat. \u201cGoodbye, Charles. It was good to see you again.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Without another word, she hurried past the two men toward the stairway. Joe looked at the stranger for a moment before turning to follow her without so much as a word to Mr. Charles Dunn.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Once downstairs, he stopped Stephanie as she was about to leave the hotel and guided her gently to a spot in the corner of the lobby where they wouldn\u2019t be overheard. \u201cJust what was that all about?\u201d he demanded, his voice angry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cI can explain,\u201d she replied hurriedly. Looking around the lobby, she whispered intently. \u201cBut, please Little Joe, not here.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">He gazed at her for a moment, trying to discern the myriad of emotions he saw in her eyes. \u201cLet\u2019s go,\u201d he finally stated, stepping aside to allow her access to the door. Once outside, they walked to the horses and mounted without a word to one another.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">They were a mile out of town when Joe reigned Cochise to a stop beside a large tree. Turning to his future stepmother, he didn\u2019t bother trying to hide the anger in either his voice or his expression. \u201cYou said you can explain,\u201d he stated simply. \u201cThis is your chance.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">She dismounted and began to pace, nervously wringing her hands as she tried to think of the right words.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cI know what you saw,\u201d she began, \u201cbut it\u2019s not what you think. There\u2019s nothing between Charles and I. There was once, a long time ago, but not now.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Joe dismounted and tied both horses to a low branch. \u201cSo that was a good-bye kiss I witnessed,\u201d he stated sarcastically.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cIt was he who kissed me, Little Joe, not the other way around,\u201d she insisted, her voice hinting at imminent tears. \u201cPlease, you have to believe me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">He turned to face her, his expression a mask of anger and distrust. \u201cYou didn\u2019t seem to be resisting too hard from where I stood,\u201d he pointed out.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">She whirled around, her face in her hands as she tried to hide her tears. Joe watched her back for a moment before asking in a quiet, but determined voice. \u201cDo you love my father?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">She turned instantly to face him once again, seemingly oblivious to the tears on her cheek. \u201cYes,\u201d she answered without hesitation. \u201cI love your father more than anything in this world. I just \u2026\u201d She allowed her voice to trail off while she struggled with the words. \u201cI had to be sure,\u201d she finally whispered. \u201cThere was a time in my life when I would have given anything for Charles to take me back. When I saw him today and he told me he wanted me, I had to be sure.\u201d She paused for a moment, trying to gauge his reaction. \u201cCan you understand that, Little Joe?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cAnd are you sure now?\u201d he asked, obviously untouched by the tears or the words.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cYes,\u201d she nodded, biting her lip to hold back a sob. \u201cI made a mistake, Little Joe. And I\u2019m sorry. If I could take back those few moments, I would, but I can\u2019t.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cNo, you can\u2019t,\u201d Joe agreed flatly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">She was silent for a moment. \u201cAre you going to tell your father what you saw?\u201d she asked quietly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">He considered the words for a moment, torn between his anger at her and his desire not to impede his father\u2019s happiness. \u201cI don\u2019t think that\u2019s my job, do you?\u201d he finally asked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cI don\u2019t want to hurt him,\u201d she whispered. \u201cPlease, Joe. Can\u2019t we just forget what happened? I made a mistake and I should have to pay for that.\u201d She searched his face for any sign that she was getting through. \u201cBut your father shouldn\u2019t. Are you willing to deny him a lifetime of happiness for the sake of a fleeting transgression?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">He struggled against her words and the guilt they invoked. He knew his father was happy, happier than he\u2019d seen him in a long time. He didn\u2019t want to ruin that for him, especially if what she was saying was true. Deciding that discretion was the better part of valour, he lowered his eyes to the ground briefly. \u201cNo,\u201d he muttered.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cI\u2019ll make him happy, Little Joe,\u201d she whispered, new tears shining in her eyes. \u201cI promise you that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">He looked up to search her face for the sincerity he hoped he\u2019d find there. \u201cI hope so,\u201d he finally murmured. Untying the horses, he moved to help her into the saddle. \u201cWe\u2019d best get back,\u201d he stated flatly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">With that, they continued on the ride, each silent in their own thoughts as they drew nearer to the Ponderosa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">********<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Joe stabled the horses while Stephanie went inside. He wasn\u2019t anxious to be in the same room with his father at the moment, worried that he wouldn\u2019t be able to hide the struggle within. He didn\u2019t like keeping things from his Pa, especially something that held the potential to be so important. But on the other hand, he didn\u2019t want to hurt his father needlessly. Deciding to give Stephanie the benefit of the doubt, he finished up in the barn and headed for the house.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Ben got to his feet as his son came in. \u201cDid you order the wheel?\u201d he asked, a smile playing around his lips as his intended slipped her arms around his waist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cIt\u2019ll be in by the end of the week,\u201d Joe answered, hanging his hat on a peg by the door and avoiding eye contact with the upcoming addition to the family. \u201cI\u2019m going to wash up for dinner,\u201d he stated, starting for the stairs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">********<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Dinner was a pleasant affair for everyone except Joe. Not only could he not make eye contact with Stephanie, but he couldn\u2019t even bring himself to look at his Pa. When he finally decided he could take no more, he excused himself under the pretence that he was worried about one of Cochise\u2019s legs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Once in the barn, he busied himself with brushing his horse, even though he really didn\u2019t need it. Spending time with Cochise often allowed him the opportunity to clear his head and think things out. Even after an hour of brushing and thinking, he was no closer to a solution to his problem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cBrush him any longer and he\u2019s not going to have a coat at all,\u201d Adam drawled from the doorway.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Joe turned to see both of his brothers standing there watching him. \u201cDid you two come out to check up on me?\u201d he asked edgily while he put down the brush.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Adam and Hoss glanced at one another before moving further into the barn. \u201cNo, we\u2019s just trying to give Pa and Miss Stephanie a little privacy,\u201d Hoss replied.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cBut judging by that comment and the way you were at dinner, maybe we should be checking up on you,\u201d Adam answered. \u201cWhat\u2019s up?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cNothing,\u201d Joe replied miserably.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Hoss raised an eyebrow and glanced at Adam before making his own attempt to draw their little brother out. \u201cYou ain\u2019t bin \u2018xactly good company since you and Miss Stephanie came back from Virginia City,\u201d he pointed out. \u201cSomethin\u2019 happen we should know about?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Joe seemed to be considering his options for a moment. \u201cThat\u2019s just it,\u201d he finally grumbled. \u201cI\u2019m not really sure what happened.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cWhy don\u2019t you tell us about it,\u201d Adam suggested. \u201cMaybe we can help.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">He looked at both of his brothers, trying to decide exactly what he should tell them. \u201cDo you both think Pa\u2019s doing the right thing?\u201d he finally asked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cGetting\u2019 married, ya mean?\u201d Hoss frowned. \u201cIf\u2019n that\u2019s what he wants to do, I reckon there ain\u2019t no harm in it. You know Pa, he wouldn\u2019t have gone off and asked her if\u2019n he didn\u2019t think it was the right thing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cBut what if he\u2019s wrong,\u201d Joe insisted intensely. \u201cWhat if it\u2019s a mistake?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">It was Adam\u2019s turn to frown at their younger brother. \u201cWhat\u2019s on your mind, Joe?\u201d he asked directly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Joe struggled with the answer to that question. There were so many things racing through his mind at the moment, he didn\u2019t know where to begin. Finally, he opted for the one thing that seemed to be uppermost in his thoughts. \u201cI just don\u2019t want to see Pa get hurt, that\u2019s all,\u201d he finished wearily.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cAnd you think that\u2019s what\u2019s gonna happen if\u2019n he marries Miss Stephanie?\u201d Hoss asked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cI don\u2019t know, Hoss,\u201d Joe sighed. \u201cI just wish I could be sure.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cYou seemed sure yesterday,\u201d Adam pointed out, remembering how well Joe had gotten along with Stephanie from the very start. \u201cWhat happened to bring about these doubts?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Joe thought about how uncomfortable he\u2019d been at dinner. He didn\u2019t want to put Adam and Hoss in the same predicament. \u201cLet\u2019s just say I do have doubts,\u201d he finally replied. Making eye contact only briefly with his brothers, he added, \u201cI\u2019m going to bed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Once he\u2019d left the barn, Hoss and Adam contemplated the situation quietly for a moment. \u201cWhat do you make of that, Adam?\u201d Hoss asked.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cSomething obviously happened on their trip to town,\u201d Adam mused. \u201cHe\u2019s pretty upset.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cAnd he wouldn\u2019t even look at Pa at supper,\u201d Hoss added, \u201cSo it must be serious.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cHe\u2019ll work it out,\u201d Adam assured his younger but much bigger brother.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cAnd what if he can\u2019t?\u201d Hoss frowned, realizing that it could make for a strained household if that were to be the case.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Adam turned to look at him for a moment. \u201cI don\u2019t know,\u201d he admitted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">********<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Joe was up bright and early the next morning. Though he\u2019d gone to bed fairly early, he\u2019d found it difficult to sleep with everything on his mind. The one conclusion he\u2019d come to in the wee hours of the morning was that he should have handled things differently in town. He\u2019d said nothing to Charles Dunn, despite what he\u2019d witnessed. Truth be told, he\u2019d been too surprised, perhaps even shocked at what he\u2019d seen to think straight. But now that he\u2019d had time to think about it, he knew there was something he had to do.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">As he crept quietly down the stairs, he was glad there was only silence coming from the kitchen. If Hop Sing had already been up, he would have tried to talk him into waiting for breakfast. As he thought about supper the night before, he realized he didn\u2019t want to sit through another strained meal. He\u2019d grab something to eat in town.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">There were two reasons that he headed straight for the hotel. It was the best place in town to get breakfast, and at this time of day, it was the place he was most likely to run into Mr. Charles Dunn. One was a sure thing, the other just a hunch, but one that paid off.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">He walked slowly toward the table where Dunn sat eating his breakfast. When the newcomer looked up, a smile of recognition spread across his face.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cMr. Cartwright,\u201d he nodded, wiping his mouth with a napkin. \u201cWould you care to join me?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Joe hesitated for a moment, then took a seat across the table from the other man. \u201cMr. Dunn,\u201d he acknowledged. \u201cJust the man I wanted to see.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cOh?\u201d Dunn replied, raising his eyebrows. \u201cI must say that comes as a bit of a surprise.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cDoes it?\u201d Joe asked pointedly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Dunn pushed his food around on the plate for a moment before putting down his fork and leaning back in his chair. \u201cNo, I guess it doesn\u2019t at that,\u201d he answered with a small smile. \u201cWhat\u2019s on your mind, Mr. Cartwright?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cYou and the woman my father\u2019s about to marry,\u201d Joe informed him coolly. \u201cI need to know that he\u2019s not making a big mistake.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cStephanie is quite a woman,\u201d Dunn shrugged slightly. \u201cI can\u2019t see how anyone would think marrying her could be a mistake.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cIt is if she doesn\u2019t love him,\u201d Joe replied flatly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cDid she tell you that?\u201d Dunn asked, looking only mildly surprised.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cShe didn\u2019t have to tell me anything,\u201d Joe reminded him. \u201cI saw you together, remember?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">He thought about the words for a moment. \u201cWhat exactly did she tell you?\u201d he asked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cThat it was over between the two of you,\u201d Joe answered. \u201cAnd that she needed to know that for sure.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cAnd you didn\u2019t believe her?\u201d Dunn asked, eyebrows raised.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cI wanted to hear it from you,\u201d Joe stated evenly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Dunn frowned thoughtfully for a moment. \u201cSeems to me, she was pretty sure when she left me in San Francisco.\u201d He could see the slight flicker of uncertainty flash through Joe\u2019s eyes and allowed a small smile. \u201cOr did she tell you it was the other way around?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cJust how was it?\u201d Joe asked without directly answering the question.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cI thought we were in love,\u201d Dunn replied without hesitation. \u201cBut it seems she had set her sights higher. A man of my means wasn\u2019t what she was looking for, not for marrying, anyway.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Joe\u2019s jaw clenched as he listened to the words. \u201cWhat exactly are you saying, Mister?\u201d he asked in a low voice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Dunn leaned forward in his chair. \u201cIf you want to know if she loves your Pa, I can\u2019t tell you that,\u201d he replied. \u201cBut I\u2019d be willing to hazard a guess that it wasn\u2019t love that drew her to the prominent Ben Cartwright in the first place.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Joe could feel his temper rising with each word, but he managed to keep it in check. \u201cAnd just what are your plans, Mr. Dunn?\u201d he asked coldly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cYou mean do I have any intentions of seeing her again?\u201d he clarified. \u201cNo. I\u2019m taking the stage back to San Francisco tomorrow morning. I won\u2019t be seeking her out before then if that\u2019s what you want to hear. I didn\u2019t know she was engaged to be married until I got here and heard you talking in the saloon.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cBut you knew when you kissed her in the hotel,\u201d Joe accused.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cAs a matter of fact, I went to her with the same questions you came to me with this morning. I thought if I reminded her of what we once shared, she\u2019d realize that money and position weren\u2019t everything. I love her, Mr. Cartwright. I\u2019ve loved her for a long time, but your father can give her that and much more.\u201d He paused briefly, and when he continued, his tone was one of sadness and resignation. \u201cI can\u2019t compete with that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Joe considered everything he\u2019d heard and reluctantly admitted to himself that it had done nothing to erase the suspicion from his mind. \u201cI\u2019ll leave you to your breakfast,\u201d he murmured, getting to his feet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cMr. Cartwright,\u201d Dunn said, rising from his chair and extending his hand. \u201cI meant what I said. She\u2019s a good woman. If she truly does love your father, he\u2019s a lucky man indeed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Joe could see the sincerity in the man\u2019s eyes and felt a pang of compassion for his situation. Shaking the outstretched hand, he managed a small smile. \u201cThank you for your time,\u201d he said with a small nod before turning to leave the room, his own breakfast forgotten.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">********\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">By the time he got back to the ranch, breakfast was over and everyone was busy with the day\u2019s activities. His father was working at his desk as he came through the front door.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cGood morning,\u201d Ben greeted him with only a slight frown. \u201cYou must have been up and out quite early.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cI had something to take care of in town,\u201d Joe murmured, avoiding all but the briefest eye contact. He was about to head into the kitchen for a cup of coffee when he spied Stephanie standing in the doorway, a cup in her hand. \u201cMiss Stephanie,\u201d he greeted her, his voice barely audible. Without anything further, he moved past her toward where Hop Sing was busy in the kitchen. She turned and followed him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cIn town so early?\u201d she asked, trying to keep her voice light. \u201cI do hope you had a chance to eat.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cHop Sing make one breakfast,\u201d the Chinese man reminded them in a stern voice. \u201cWho here, eat. Who no here, no eat.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cIt\u2019s all right, Hop Sing,\u201d Joe assured the man. \u201cI just want some coffee.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Stephanie glanced furtively at the cook, knowing she couldn\u2019t say anything in his presence but desperately wanting to ask Joe about his reasons for going to town. \u201cI hope you got everything accomplished that you needed to,\u201d she offered sweetly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Joe made his first real eye contact with her since their talk on the way home the day before. \u201cNot really, Ma\u2019am,\u201d he said simply before turning to leave the room.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">He went straight to the sideboard by the door and drained the cup of the hot liquid before calling over his shoulder to his father. \u201cI\u2019m going out to give Adam a hand with that fence in the south pasture.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cFine,\u201d Ben replied distractedly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Stephanie watched the short exchange from her spot in the dining room. Her gaze took in Ben\u2019s deep involvement in the ledgers before flitting back to where Joe was already disappearing out the door. Quickly, she followed, closing the door behind her before tracing his steps to the barn.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">He turned around briefly as he heard her enter the barn, then went back to saddling Cochise without acknowledging her presence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cYou talked to Charles,\u201d she stated quietly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cDoes that bother you?\u201d he asked tersely.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cThat depends,\u201d she replied. \u201cWhat did he tell you?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Joe paused a moment before turning to face her. \u201cThat he loves you,\u201d he answered.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cAnd I love your Pa,\u201d she stated firmly. \u201cWhat does it matter how Charles feels about me?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cThat depends,\u201d he repeated her own words back to her. \u201cDo you love my father for the man he is or for the kind of life he can give you?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cDoes it matter?\u201d she retorted. \u201cAs long as I love him?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cIt does to me,\u201d Joe replied flatly. \u201cAnd I\u2019m sure it would to my father.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">She was silent for a moment, fidgeting nonchalantly with the edge of her saddle before turning to face him once again. \u201cI make him happy, Joe. Like it or not, you can\u2019t deny that. Whether or not I love him the way you want me to really isn\u2019t important, is it?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cAnd when he finds out?\u201d Joe demanded. \u201cDon\u2019t you even care how much it\u2019s going to hurt him?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cThere\u2019s no reason he has to find out,\u201d she returned. \u201cHe wants to marry me, Little Joe, and I\u2019ll be a good wife to him, that\u2019s all that matters. Do you really think passion and romance is what he\u2019s looking for at this point in time? He\u2019s had that more than once in his life and it gave him three sons that he cherishes more than anything else in this world. Do you think any woman, no matter how much or how deeply she loves him is ever going to be able to compare to that?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Joe averted his gaze for a moment while he thought about her words.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cWhat he needs now is someone to grow old with, someone who will always be by his side, even after the three of you are married with families of your own,\u201d she continued. \u201cI can be that person, Joe. Do you really want to take that from him? Would it make you happier to know he was going to spend the rest of his days alone?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">A movement in the doorway caught their attention and they both looked over to see Ben entering the barn. \u201cJoe, I thought you\u2019d be halfway to the south pasture by now,\u201d he smiled. \u201cIs something wrong?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Joe glanced at Stephanie briefly before forcing a small smile. \u201cNo, Pa,\u201d he answered. \u201cWe were just talking about the wedding.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cI just wanted to make sure no one had been left off the guest list,\u201d Stephanie smiled, slipping an arm around Ben\u2019s waist. \u201cI want all your friends and neighbours to be able to share in our happiness.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cThey\u2019ll soon be your friends and neighbours too,\u201d Ben reminded her with a smile, putting his arm around her and giving her a slight squeeze.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Joe took note of the gesture, then looked away, a gnawing feeling of guilt tugging mercilessly at his conscience. \u201cI\u2019d better get going,\u201d he announced, leading Cochise out of the stall. Without another word, he was on his way to meet Adam in the south pasture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">********\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">They worked side by side, with no more than a few words exchanged between them until they decided to take a short break.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cI see you\u2019ve still got a lot on your mind,\u201d Adam stated casually as they both went for their canteens.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cYeah, I guess so,\u201d Joe murmured.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cAre you ready to talk about it?\u201d Adam asked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Joe looked at him for a moment. \u201cWhat do you think Pa is looking for in this marriage?\u201d he finally asked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Adam shrugged while he considered the question. \u201cWhat anyone\u2019s looking for, I guess. Love, companionship, trust and respect.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Joe nodded slowly while he thought about the words. After a moment\u2019s hesitation, he spoke in a quiet voice. \u201cShe doesn\u2019t love him, Adam.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Adam frowned slightly. \u201cWhat makes you think that?\u201d he asked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Joe proceeded to fill him in on everything, from the kiss he\u2019d witnessed to the conversations he\u2019d had with both Charles Dunn and Stephanie herself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Adam didn\u2019t say anything right away and Joe looked over at him in an attempt to determine what he was thinking.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cPa needs to know,\u201d Adam finally stated. \u201cWhether he decides he still wants to marry her or not, he has the right to know exactly how she feels.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cI know,\u201d Joe sighed. \u201cI just don\u2019t know what to say to him.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cThat shouldn\u2019t be your responsibility,\u201d Adam assured him. \u201cShe\u2019s got to tell him exactly where he stands and let him be the one to decide whether or not that\u2019s enough for him.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cShe doesn\u2019t have any intention of saying anything to him,\u201d Joe informed his brother. \u201cShe thinks it\u2019s enough that he loves her, regardless of the fact that she doesn\u2019t feel the same way.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cShe\u2019s wrong, Joe,\u201d Adam asked quietly. \u201cPa deserves more than that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Joe thought about it for a moment. \u201cI know,\u201d he replied miserably. \u201cI just don\u2019t want to see him hurt, that\u2019s all.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cHe\u2019ll be hurt in the long run if he marries her,\u201d Adam pointed out. \u201cContrary to Stephanie\u2019s misguided beliefs, a marriage with that kind of foundation can never be a happy one.\u201d He paused for a moment. \u201cDo you want me to talk to him?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Joe took a deep breath and shook his head slightly. \u201cIt wouldn\u2019t be fair to you to send you to Pa with a second-hand account of my suspicions,\u201d he acknowledged.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cFrom what you\u2019ve told me, it sounds like your suspicions are well founded,\u201d Adam pointed out. \u201cI think Pa would want to know, even if the truth does hurt. It\u2019s far better than living a lie for the rest of his life.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Joe nodded, knowing his brother was right but still not looking forward to the conversation. \u201cI\u2019ll talk to him,\u201d he promised. \u201cThanks, Adam.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cI can finish up here,\u201d Adam suggested. \u201cWhy don\u2019t you go on back to the house. As he made his way home, he felt marginally better for having talked to his brother about the situation. He also noted that Shadow was still in her stall. Without bothering to unsaddle his own mount, he headed for the house.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cLittle Joe,\u201d Stephanie exclaimed, getting up from the settee as he entered. \u201cI didn\u2019t expect you back quite so soon.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cWhere\u2019s Pa?\u201d he asked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cHe went out to check on things with Hoss,\u201d she explained. \u201cHe should be back any time now.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cWe need to talk,\u201d he informed her grimly. \u201cDespite all you said earlier, I can\u2019t sit back and watch you leading my father on like this. Either you tell him how you really feel, or I will.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cAnd just what are you going to tell him?\u201d she asked, her temper rising in the face of his ultimatum. \u201cSurely you can\u2019t claim to know how I feel.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cDo you love Charles Dunn?\u201d he asked her pointedly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cWe\u2019ve already been over this,\u201d she sighed in exasperation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">He crossed the room to take her by the arm. \u201cNo, we haven\u2019t,\u201d he argued. \u201cWe discussed how he felt about you, but not the other way around. Look me in the eye and tell me you don\u2019t love him.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">She glared at him, her glance dropping briefly to his hand on her arm. \u201cCharles Dunn is nothing to me,\u201d she spat. \u201cHow I felt about him in the past has nothing to do with the way things are now. I never tricked him into falling in love with me, but he did. And now he\u2019s asked me to marry him and I\u2019m not stupid enough, or na\u00efve enough to turn him down just because his spoiled little boy doesn\u2019t want to share his daddy with anyone else.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Joe felt his grip on her arm tightening as his anger rose and he immediately released her. His jaw clenching, he struggled to regain control over his emotions. \u201cAre you going to tell him or am I?\u201d he finally asked in a cold voice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">She was dismayed at his words and decided on another approach. \u201cI\u2019m sorry, Little Joe,\u201d she apologized, laying a hand on his arm. \u201cI didn\u2019t mean what I said. These last few days have just been so crazy with the wedding plans and everything. I do love your father, you have to believe that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cWhy?\u201d he demanded, still angry. \u201cBecause you suddenly believe it?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cBecause after our earlier discussion, I had a chance to really think about everything,\u201d she answered, her voice deceptively sweet. \u201cI don\u2019t know what I\u2019d do if I lost him now. He\u2019s come to mean everything to me. I don\u2019t care about the ranch or the money; it\u2019s just not important anymore.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Joe\u2019s frown deepened as he looked into her pleading eyes, though it did nothing to dispel the anger he still felt. \u201cIt was important enough this morning,\u201d he reminded her flatly. \u201cAm I supposed to believe this sudden change of heart?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">He saw a flicker of something akin to defiance in her eyes before her expression was cloaked once again in a mask of dismay. Brief as it was, it was enough to convince him that her new attitude was nothing more than a well-acted performance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cI don\u2019t know what else I can do to convince you,\u201d she lamented sadly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">He couldn\u2019t help a wry smile at the irony of her words. \u201cOh, you\u2019ve convinced me,\u201d he assured her dryly. \u201cThe only question now is, when are you going to tell my father the truth?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">He saw the anger flash in her eyes even as he heard the door behind them open. I \u2026\u201d She raised tear-filled eyes to meet his. \u201cI don\u2019t think I could possibly marry you, knowing how he feels towards me, Ben,\u201d she whispered as though her heart was breaking. \u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d With that, she turned and hurried toward the stairs, still crying as she climbed to the second floor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Ben stared after her in dumfounded confusion for a moment before turning to Joe with questioning eyes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cI\u2019m sorry, Pa,\u201d Joe mumbled, his gaze meeting his father\u2019s only briefly before dropping to the floor. \u201cI didn\u2019t intend for you to walk in on that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Ben\u2019s initial shock had started to turn to anger. \u201cJust what were these awful things you said to her?\u201d he demanded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Joe hesitated briefly, shifting his weight in an uncomfortable manner before replying. \u201cI told her I didn\u2019t think you should marry her,\u201d he summed it up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cYou what?\u201d Ben asked incredulously.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cI can explain, Pa,\u201d Joe offered miserably.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cOh you can, can you?\u201d Ben bellowed, giving his newfound anger full reign. \u201cWell let me explain something to you, young man. You are my son, but that doesn\u2019t give you the right to make personal decisions in my life. Whom I do or do not choose to marry is my business and mine alone, do you understand me?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cBut Pa\u2026\u201d Joe interrupted, attempting once more to explain his side of things.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cBut Pa nothing,\u201d Ben cut him off, crossing the floor to stand directly in front of his youngest son. \u201cNow whether you like it or not, Stephanie is going to be a part of this family and I expect you to show her the respect that position accords. Now you march up those stairs and apologize this minute,\u201d he concluded harshly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cI can\u2019t do that, Pa,\u201d Joe replied, his own anger growing. \u201cIf you want to marry a woman like that, it\u2019s your business, but she isn\u2019t fit to command my respect.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">He didn\u2019t even see the hand, but he certainly felt it as it connected squarely with his cheek. The sound of the slap echoed in the room for a moment as time seemed to stand still. He\u2019d had his share of spankings as a child, all deserved and well-intentioned. He\u2019d even exchanged blows with his brothers on different occasions, but his father had never before raised a hand to him in anger. As he slowly turned his head to meet his father\u2019s gaze, he saw his own pain and shock mirrored there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cJoe,\u201d Ben breathed, \u201cJoe, I\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Though the physical pain had been minimal, the aching in his soul was something he wasn\u2019t sure he\u2019d ever be rid of. Without a word, he turned and strode purposefully toward the door, oblivious to the sound of his father\u2019s voice calling to him. All he could hear in his mind was the sound of the slap, the sound that told him that his father had chosen sides, the sound that had driven a wedge between them that they might never recover from.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cWhere are you off to?\u201d Hoss asked as they passed in the yard. When Joe didn\u2019t respond, Hoss turned to frown in his little brother\u2019s direction. Knowing something was wrong, he followed Joe into the barn. \u201cWhat\u2019s the matter?\u201d he asked as he took in the set to Joe\u2019s jaw and the pain and anger in his eyes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cI\u2019ll be in town,\u201d Joe managed around the lump of emotion in his throat. Without another word, he led Cochise quickly from the barn and vaulted into the saddle before heading off at a full gallop. Hoss watched him disappear around the corner of the barn and almost instantly heard Adam\u2019s voice calling to Joe. A moment later, Adam appeared from the direction in which the youngest Cartwright had gone. His expression was one of concern as he dismounted and looked at Hoss.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cWhere\u2019s he going?\u201d he asked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cTo town,\u201d Hoss replied grimly. \u201cSomethin\u2019s wrong, Adam. I ain\u2019t never seen Joe look like that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Adam looked thoughtfully toward the house, his frown deepening. \u201cCome on,\u201d he said, tying Sport to the railing instead of stabling him. \u201cLet\u2019s ask Pa.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">They found their father staring into the unlit fireplace and exchanged a worried glance as they took in the slump of the normally broad shoulders. \u201cPa?\u201d Adam ventured cautiously. \u201cWhat\u2019s wrong?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Their concern intensified as their father slowly turned to face them. Neither could remember the last time they\u2019d seen him look so haggard. The glint of unshed tears in his eyes was evident and both hurried to his side. \u201cWhat is it, Pa?\u201d Hoss insisted gently. \u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Ben\u2019s eyes took on a hauntingly confused look as though struggling with the answer to his son\u2019s question. Finally, in a voice barely audible, he replied, \u201cI hit him.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Adam and Hoss exchanged glances of surprise and confusion. \u201cYou what?\u201d Adam demanded tensely, knowing the circumstances a bit better than Hoss.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cJoe?\u201d Hoss asked, his expression belying his surprise. \u201cYou hit Little Joe?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">The words seemed to have the affect of a physical blow and Ben recoiled slightly. \u201cNot once in all these years have I ever had cause to raise my hand to you boys,\u201d he murmured in an almost dreamlike tone. \u201cA father doesn\u2019t settle disagreements with his sons in such a manner.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Adam considered the words briefly allowing his initial anger to diffuse slightly. \u201cJoe knows that,\u201d he assured his father. \u201cHe just needs to cool down a little, that\u2019s all.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cYeah,\u201d Hoss agreed, trying to muster a smile. \u201cYou know what he kin get like.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">They noticed their father\u2019s silence and wondered if he\u2019d even heard their words. \u201cWhat happened?\u201d Adam asked quietly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Ben looked at him as though just realizing he was there. \u201cHe upset Stephanie,\u201d Ben replied with an air of detachment. \u201cAll I wanted him to do was apologize.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cDon\u2019t forget, Pa,\u201d Hoss offered. \u201cThere\u2019s never bin another woman here since his ma. Maybe he\u2019s just havin\u2019 a hard time adjustin\u2019 to it all.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cI should have seen that,\u201d Ben chastised himself. \u201cI was so relieved when he seemed to accept her that I didn\u2019t even realize there was a problem. I\u2019ve been both blind and insensitive.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Adam listened to the exchange and took a deep breath. \u201cDid you talk to Stephanie?\u201d he asked, a slight edge to his voice. \u201cWhat did she have to say about what happened?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Ben shrugged slightly as though dismissing the question. \u201cOnly that Joe said some terrible things to her.\u201d He paused a moment as though remembering the scene. \u201cThen she said she couldn\u2019t marry me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cThat don\u2019t sound like Little Joe,\u201d Hoss frowned. \u201cHe wouldn\u2019t say nothin\u2019 bad to Miss Stephanie \u2018less he had a good reason. Even then, he just wouldn\u2019t say it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cDid Joe tell you exactly what he said to upset her?\u201d Adam asked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Ben shook his head slowly, his expression full of regret. \u201cI didn\u2019t give him a chance, \u201c he admitted. \u201cWe exchanged some harsh words and before I knew it, I\u2019d \u2026\u201d He couldn\u2019t bring himself to finish the statement.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Adam was about to say something further when Stephanie appeared at the top of the stairs. As the three men watched, she made her way down, offering a fragile smile as she joined them in the sitting room. \u201cI\u2019m sorry to interrupt,\u201d she offered. \u201cI just wanted to apologize to Little Joe. I shouldn\u2019t have slapped him the way I did. Is he here?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Hoss and Adam exchanged another surprised look while Ben shook his head. \u201cI\u2019m afraid he\u2019s gone into town,\u201d he explained. \u201cStephanie, I think we need to talk.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Adam and Hoss took their cue and proceeded to excuse themselves. \u201cI think we\u2019d better ride into town and check on Little Joe,\u201d Hoss suggested.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cPlease tell him how sorry I am about everything that\u2019s happened,\u201d Stephanie asked, her expression one of remorse.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cWill do, Ma\u2019am,\u201d Hoss smiled with assurance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Adam said nothing and merely looked at Stephanie for a moment before following Hoss out the door. Once in the barn, he ran his hand through his hair with a heavy sigh. \u201cI think you should go after Joe,\u201d he concurred with Hoss\u2019 plan. \u201cBut I\u2019d better stay here in case Pa needs me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Hoss paused in his task of saddling Chubb and turned to face his older brother. \u201cI reckon they\u2019re both hurtin\u2019 some. I never thought I\u2019d ever see the day when Pa hit Little Joe. What do you reckon Joe coulda said to make him that mad?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cI think it had more to do with Stephanie than either Pa or Joe,\u201d Adam sighed. He proceeded to tell Hoss about the conversation he\u2019d had with Joe earlier in the day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cI can\u2019t hardly believe it, Adam,\u201d Hoss murmured once he\u2019d heard the account.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cShe had us all fooled,\u201d Adam sighed. \u201cIf Joe hadn\u2019t seen her with another man, none of us would have suspected a thing and the wedding would have went off as planned.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Hoss frowned at the words. \u201cIs that other guy still in Virginia City?\u201d he asked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Adam picked up on his thoughts immediately. \u201cYou\u2019d better go find Joe,\u201d he stated grimly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">********<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Joe headed straight for the saloon after tying Cochise to the railing. He knew he should eat something, but the pain in his heart was too great to allow for thoughts of food. As he entered through the swinging doors, he noticed most of the men were gathered around one of the tables. Without bothering to wonder why, he headed straight to the bar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cHi, Little Joe,\u201d Bernie smiled. \u201cBeer?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cMake it a whiskey,\u201d Joe muttered, throwing some money down on the bar. A cheer went up from the group in the corner, but Joe barely noticed as he waited for his drink.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cBig game,\u201d Bernie nodded in the direction of the table as he poured amber liquid into a glass. \u201cSome new guy. Came into town yesterday. I think he\u2019s only lost two hands in the last four hours, but everybody wants a shot at him anyway.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">It took a moment for the words to register. \u201cYesterday?\u201d he repeated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cOn the stage,\u201d Bernie nodded. \u201cHe sure has this place stirred up since he\u2019s been here.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Joe didn\u2019t answer, but turned and walked slowly toward the group of men. Peering over the shoulder of one of them, he was able to see the men sitting at the table. He recognized them both, one as a fairly successful area rancher and one as the man he\u2019s spoken to in the hotel restaurant that morning. As he listened, his jaw clenched in barely controlled anger.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cSeems I win again, Mr. Philips,\u201d the newcomer drawled. \u201cWhoever would have guessed my little trip to Virginia City would prove so profitable.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cThe trip ain\u2019t over yet,\u201d Philips replied amicably. \u201cI still have a chance to win my money back.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cI\u2019ll be leaving your fair town tomorrow, my friend,\u201d Dunn chuckled. \u201cBut from here I\u2019ll be going to Carson City for a spell. Feel free to look me up if you\u2019re so inclined.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cWell you haven\u2019t left yet,\u201d Philips reminded him. \u201cDeal.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Joe pushed his way through the crowd until he was standing at the edge of the table.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cLittle Joe,\u201d Philips exclaimed with a smile. \u201cCan we deal you in for a hand or two?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cNo thanks, Mr. Philips,\u201d he muttered, his eyes on Charles Dunn. \u201cI\u2019d like to talk to Mr. Dunn.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Dunn leaned back in his chair and offered a crooked smile. \u201cWhy, Mr. Cartwright. I thought we\u2019d said all there was to say this morning.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cWell I have a few more things to say now,\u201d Joe grated. \u201cOn your feet.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Dunn\u2019s smile merely widened, though it failed to reach his eyes which remained cold and defiant. \u201cGo home, boy,\u201d he drawled. \u201cBack to your daddy and your new ma.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Joe\u2019s fists clenched at his side. \u201cEverything you said this morning was a lie,\u201d he accused, refusing to directly address the snide remark. \u201cYou have no intention of going back to San Francisco.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Dunn seemed to be considering the words for a moment. \u201cActually, I\u2019ve decided since our little chat that Carson City might be a nice place to settle down.\u201d He locked his gaze with that of Joe\u2019s. \u201cDon\u2019t forget, I do have a very close friend living in the area.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Joe knew he was referring to Stephanie and hoped, for his father\u2019s sake, that no one else did. \u201cI should have taken care of you this morning,\u201d he grated flatly. \u201cGet up.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Bernie had been listening to the conversation and quickly interjected with his own concerns. \u201cI don\u2019t want any trouble in here, Little Joe.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cThen perhaps Mr. Dunn would care to join me outside,\u201d Joe challenged.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Dunn got to his feet and adjusted his jacket in such a way as to reveal the two silver-inlaid guns he wore. \u201cAre you sure that\u2019s what you want, Cartwright?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Joe\u2019s gaze flitted from the man\u2019s face to the guns and back again without so much as a trace of uncertainty. Dunn had taken him for a fool and was at the root of the strained relationship with his father. Nothing was going to change his mind at this point. \u201cI said outside,\u201d he stated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">The crowd parted to allow Dunn access to the doors. \u201cWhatever you say, Cartwright,\u201d he grinned wickedly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Joe followed him into the street while the rest of the saloon\u2019s patrons spilled out onto the boardwalk. All eyes were on the two men who stood facing each other, each waiting for the other to make a move. No one even turned as they heard a horse approaching. As Dunn reached for his guns, a voice could be heard calling Joe\u2019s name before the sound of shots sliced through the afternoon air.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Hoss dismounted and hurried to his brother\u2019s side. \u201cJoe!\u201d he exclaimed, swallowing as he saw the red stain spreading on the younger man\u2019s shirt. Looking up at the crowd gathered, he shouted. \u201cSomebody get the doc!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">********<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Adam stayed outside for what he considered to be an appropriate amount of time, allowing his father an opportunity to speak with the woman who seemed to be at the heart of all their recent problems. By the time he chose to make his way into the house, Ben was again alone in the sitting room.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cPa?\u201d he ventured cautiously. \u201cCan I talk to you?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cHmm?\u201d Ben murmured distractedly as he turned from the fireplace. \u201cOf course. What is it?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cIt\u2019s about Joe,\u201d Adam began, crossing the room to stand beside his father.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cI can\u2019t think of much else myself,\u201d Ben sighed wearily as he lowered himself into his favorite chair. \u201cHow could I have been so careless? I have never once allowed my anger to control my actions. Why now? Why with Little Joe?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Adam took a seat on the table in front of his father. \u201cDid you talk to Stephanie?\u201d he asked quietly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Ben nodded slightly. \u201cShe\u2019s all right. She understands how Joe must feel, we both do. Neither of us wants to cause him any unhappiness. Stephanie doesn\u2019t want to take the place of his mother, not in Joe\u2019s heart or in mine. I just wish I had explained that to him instead of flying off the handle like I did.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Adam frowned slightly as he considered the words. \u201cStephanie isn\u2019t the first woman you\u2019ve shown an interest in since Marie died,\u201d he pointed out gently. \u201cHave you ever known Joe to have such feelings of animosity toward any of them?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cNo,\u201d Ben sighed. \u201cMaybe it was the idea of me getting married again after all these years.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Adam ran his hand through his hair in sheer frustration. \u201cDon\u2019t you think Joe wants to see you happy? Don\u2019t you think we all do?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Ben frowned at his son\u2019s outburst. \u201cWhat do you know about all of this, Adam?\u201d he asked, his voice regaining the tone of authority Adam was used to.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cJoe doesn\u2019t think Stephanie is the woman for you,\u201d Adam agreed, \u201cbut not for the reasons you think. It has nothing to do with you getting married, it has everything to do with you being happy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cGo on,\u201d Ben stated firmly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Adam took a deep breath. \u201cHe saw her in town with another man yesterday,\u201d he relented wearily. \u201cThey were\u2026 well let\u2019s just say they appeared to be more than just old friends.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Ben\u2019s raised his chin slightly at the words. \u201cIs he sure of what he saw?\u201d he asked, hiding the pain the words had caused.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cSure enough that he asked her about it,\u201d Adam answered. \u201cShe told him that it was over between the two of them, that she just had to be sure.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cI see,\u201d Ben responded, nodding once.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cThere\u2019s more, Pa,\u201d Adam continued almost reluctantly. \u201cJoe went into town this morning to talk to this other man, a guy by the name of Charles Dunn. Dunn told him that he loves Stephanie, but that he couldn\u2019t give her the kind of things she wanted, the kind of lifestyle she is looking for.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cYou mean the kind of lifestyle I can give her,\u201d Ben murmured in defeat. After a brief pause, he asked one more question. \u201cDid she say she loves this Charles Dunn?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cI don\u2019t know,\u201d Adam admitted quietly. \u201cI sent Joe back here to talk to you about it. We thought you needed to know.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Ben got to his feet. \u201cSaddle my horse,\u201d he stated. \u201cI\u2019m going to find Little Joe.\u201d He paused a moment, looking toward the stairs. \u201cJust as soon as I clear a few things up here.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Adam nodded wordlessly and went to do as instructed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Ben climbed the stairs and hesitated only a moment outside of her door before knocking. When she opened the door, she smiled as though she didn\u2019t have a care in the world. Another man? Ben, whatever are you talking about?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cCharles Dunn,\u201d Ben stated grimly. \u201cWhat does he mean to you, Stephanie?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cBen, I don\u2019t have the slightest idea what you\u2019re talking about,\u201d she replied nervously. \u201cWe both know how Little Joe feels about our wedding. Isn\u2019t it possible that he\u2019s making up this absurd story just to tear us apart?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Ben felt the last flicker of hope die as her words permeated the air. \u201cNo,\u201d he stated quietly. \u201cIt isn\u2019t possible. You obviously don\u2019t know Little Joe.\u201d He paused for a moment, \u201cAnd I obviously don\u2019t know you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">He turned away from the door only to have her stop him with a hand on his arm. \u201cAll right,\u201d she exclaimed in a voice laden with panic. \u201cBut it\u2019s not what you think, darling. Charles Dunn is an old friend. We hadn\u2019t seen each other in a long time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cHe loves you,\u201d Ben stated. \u201cNot as a friend, but as a woman. He told Joe that he couldn\u2019t provide you with the kind of lifestyle you were looking for.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cAnd Joe told you,\u201d she surmised sadly. \u201cI can\u2019t believe you\u2019d think so low of me, Ben.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cJoe didn\u2019t tell me anything,\u201d Ben stated, his anger growing. \u201cHe didn\u2019t want to have to be the one to point out what a fool I\u2019ve been.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">She was about to say something when Adam\u2019s voice interrupted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cPa!\u201d he shouted from the bottom of the stairs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Ben recognized the urgency in his voice and hurried to the stairway. \u201cWhat is it?\u201d he asked solemnly<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cHoss sent Charlie Parker out to get you,\u201d Adam answered in a grim tone. \u201cJoe\u2019s been shot.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Thoughts of the conversation he\u2019d been embroiled in forgotten, Ben hurried down the stairs and out the door. Adam already had both horses ready and Charlie handed Ben Buck\u2019s reins as he mounted. Without even a glance back at the woman in the doorway, the three of them hurried off toward town.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">********<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cHow is he, Doc?\u201d Ben asked the moment he entered the doctor\u2019s office.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cI don\u2019t know for sure, Ben,\u201d Doc Martin answered dismally. \u201cI got the bullet out, but he\u2019s lost a lot of blood.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cCan I see him?\u201d Ben asked.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cOf course,\u201d the doctor nodded. \u201cHoss is in with him now. You and Adam go right on in.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">They entered the back room to see Hoss sitting by Joe\u2019s side, holding the unconscious man\u2019s hand. As the door closed, Hoss looked up, his expression one of shock and disbelief. \u201cI tried to stop him, Pa,\u201d Hoss whispered around the lump in his throat. \u201cI was just a second too late.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Ben put a hand on his middle son\u2019s shoulder as he tried to choke back his own emotions. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t your fault, son,\u201d he assured him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Hoss got to his feet and allowed Ben to take his place by Joe\u2019s side.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cJoseph?\u201d Ben coaxed gently. \u201cCan you hear me, son?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">When there was no response, Ben lowered his head in a gesture of complete and utter despair. At the same time, Adam caught Hoss\u2019 attention and nodded toward the door.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Once in the outer office, Adam asked Hoss what had happened.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cBernie says that Dunn fella\u2019s bin in the saloon gamblin\u2019 all day,\u201d Hoss explained. \u201cWhen Little Joe came in and saw him, he said he wanted to talk to him. Bernie told \u2018em he didn\u2019t want no trouble in the place and Joe suggested they take it outside. Bernie figured Joe was just gonna fight him. It was Dunn upped the ante by showin\u2019 his guns.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cDoesn\u2019t exactly sound like the man Joe described to me this morning,\u201d Adam stated grimly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cNo, it don\u2019t,\u201d Hoss agreed. \u201cBernie says Dunn flashes those guns like he was born wearin\u2019 \u2018em.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cWhere\u2019s Dunn now?\u201d Adam asked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cDoc\u2019s got him in the other room,\u201d Hoss replied. \u201cOur little brother got in a good shot before\u2026\u201d He couldn\u2019t bring himself to finish the sentence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">As though on cue, Doc Martin emerged from one of the back rooms. His expression was grim and he was shaking his head slightly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cHow is he, doc?\u201d Adam asked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cThe bullet\u2019s lodged against his spine,\u201d the doctor sighed. \u201cThere\u2019s no way I can get it out. I\u2019ve already done all I can but I don\u2019t think he\u2019s going to make it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">They heard a slight gasp and turned to see Stephanie standing in the doorway. Having overheard only the last part of the conversation, she assumed they were talking about Joe. \u201cLittle Joe?\u201d she breathed, a hand to her mouth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cI don\u2019t know, Miss,\u201d Doc Martin explained. \u201cIt\u2019s too soon to tell.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Just then Ben popped his head out of Joe\u2019s room. \u201cDoc!\u201d he exclaimed with a sense of urgency. \u201cCome quick. He can\u2019t breathe.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cI was afraid of that,\u201d Doc Martin murmured as he hurried toward the room. \u201cI\u2019m going to have to drain the blood from his chest. You\u2019d best wait out here, Ben.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Ben nodded briefly as the doctor closed the door behind him. Looking around the room, he noticed Stephanie and his expression took on an angry addition to the grief and worry he was already feeling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Stephanie looked slightly confused as her gaze traveled from the door Doc Martin had just entered to the one she\u2019d seen him come out of earlier.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cYour friend, Charles Dunn,\u201d Adam informed her coldly. \u201cThat\u2019s who you overheard the doctor talking about.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cCharles,\u201d she breathed, her gaze locked on the closed door for a moment. As though suddenly realizing she was not alone in the room, she looked at Ben, trying to mask her horror.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cGo ahead,\u201d he stated flatly, nodding toward Dunn\u2019s door. \u201cWe don\u2019t need you here.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">There was a finality in the statement that made his feelings quite clear, but she wasn\u2019t yet willing to admit defeat. \u201cBen, I never wanted any of this.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Adam and Hoss quietly left the office through the main door, opting to give their father some privacy while they waited for news of their brother\u2019s condition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cI\u2019m sure you didn\u2019t,\u201d Ben agreed in a dull voice once they were alone. \u201cAll you really wanted was what our marriage could give you &#8211; wealth, position, security. The only thing you didn\u2019t want was the one thing I wanted to give you most. You didn\u2019t need it because you\u2019d already found it in Dunn.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cNo,\u201d she breathed, shaking her head slowly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">He took a step toward her, his eyes darkening as they bored into hers. \u201cTell me you weren\u2019t planning to go on seeing him,\u201d he accused in an icy tone. \u201cTell me my son isn\u2019t lying in there merely because you\u2019d finally figured out a way to have it all.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">The bluntness of his words tore through the fabric of lies she\u2019d been so carefully weaving and she hung her head, allowing the tears to fall freely. \u201cI\u2019m sorry,\u201d she whispered. \u201cI didn\u2019t know it would turn out this way.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">They were interrupted by the doctor as he emerged from Joe\u2019s room. \u201cHe\u2019s breathing better, now,\u201d he informed Ben, wiping his hands on a towel. \u201cYou may want to be with him in case he wakes up.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Ben nodded once and cast a last, hard look in Stephanie\u2019s direction. \u201cMy son needs me,\u201d he stated. \u201cGood bye, Stephanie.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Adam and Hoss had heard the doctor\u2019s voice and cautiously entered the office once again. \u201cGo on in, boys,\u201d Doc Martin nodded wearily. \u201cThere\u2019s nothing any of us can do now but wait.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">They both glanced uneasily at Stephanie as they slowly made their way past her. She watched them disappear into the room before turning toward the other closed door. After wiping the tears from her cheeks, she sighed uneasily and reached for the doorknob with trembling fingers. Her breath caught in her throat as she saw the pallid form of the man she loved and she realized, perhaps for the first time, that she didn\u2019t want to lose him. Vowing to tell him that before it was too late, she quietly entered the room and closed the door behind her.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">********\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Doc Martin had brought a couple of cots into the office and had managed to convince Adam and Hoss to rest at least briefly throughout the night. There had been no change in Joe\u2019s condition, but Ben sat by his side every minute, talking to him quietly as though willing him to hear the words. As the sun began to inch it\u2019s way above the horizon, Joe finally moved his head, frowning slightly at the pain he was feeling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cPa?\u201d he managed, his voice barely audible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cI\u2019m here, son,\u201d Ben smiled, choking back his tears. \u201cYou\u2019re going to be all right.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cDunn,\u201d Joe whispered, his eyes still closed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Ben looked at the doctor, only to see him shake his head slightly. Looking back down at his son, Ben frowned in concern. \u201cDon\u2019t worry about that now,\u201d he instructed gently. \u201cJust rest and get well.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cSo tired,\u201d Joe murmured.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cYou lost a lot of blood,\u201d Ben informed him, glancing up as Adam and Hoss entered the room. \u201cBut the doctor says you\u2019re going to be just fine.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Joe managed a small nod. After a moment, he struggled to open his eyes. Looking up at his father, he conveyed the torment he\u2019d been feeling. \u201cI\u2019m sorry, Pa,\u201d he whispered.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Ben felt his heart break at the words. \u201cNo, son,\u201d he managed around the lump in his throat. \u201cI\u2019m sorry. I never thought I was capable of striking one of my sons. You tried to tell me what was going on and I just wouldn\u2019t listen. Forgive me, Joseph.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Joe managed a small smile and moved his fingers to grip his father\u2019s hand weakly. \u201cI love you, Pa,\u201d he murmured as he lapsed once again into unconsciousness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Ben blinked back tears as he gripped his son\u2019s limp hand. \u201cI love you too, son,\u201d he whispered hoarsely.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Hoss inconspicuously dabbed at a tear in the corner of his eye while Adam turned to feign interest in one of the many gadgets on a shelf by the door. After a moment they looked uncomfortably at one another before turning their attention on their father.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cMaybe you should try to git some rest, Pa,\u201d Hoss suggested. \u201cI\u2019ll sit with Little Joe a while.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Ben hesitated only briefly before getting to his feet and moving toward the door. Pausing, he looked back at where Joe lay and then at his two other sons.
