Heat Wave<\/strong><\/p>\n It was a hot summer\u2019s day. Adam took off his hat and wiped the sweat from his brow then replaced his hat. The past few weeks had been brutally hot and there seemed to be no end in sight. It hadn\u2019t rained for a month and everyone was conserving water. They had watched and taken care of the cattle and other parts of the land.<\/p>\n Hoss rode up to Adam.<\/p>\n \u201cHow are you doing?\u201d he asked taking a swig of water from his canteen.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m all right. Just wish we were done with all the chores so we can relax,\u201d Adam replied grabbing his canteen.<\/p>\n Following his brother\u2019s lead he took a drink of water.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019ll be done soon,\u201d Hoss replied.<\/p>\n Ben rode up to them.<\/p>\n \u201cWhat\u2019s going on?\u201d he asked gruffly.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re just taking a quick break, Pa,\u201d Adam said in a tight voice.<\/p>\n He didn\u2019t want to snap at his father because he knew he was irritable because of the heat.<\/p>\n \u201cWell get back to work,\u201d Ben snapped and rode off.<\/p>\n Adam looked at Hoss and lifted his eyebrows then they went back to work.<\/p>\n That night, the Cartwrights stumbled into the house and into beds, skipping dinner. Even Hoss. Adam woke up during the night to get a drink of water then went to the front room to sit down. It was too hot to go back to sleep. He sighed and rubbed his face as he thought about all that he needed to do the next day. Hearing footsteps he looked up. Hoss entered the room and sat down.<\/p>\n \u201cYou all right?\u201d Hoss asked.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m just hot.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI think you\u2019re tired too.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cOf course I am, Hoss. We\u2019ve been working day in and day out. We haven\u2019t really relaxed and it hasn\u2019t rained in days,\u201d Adam snapped.<\/p>\n He then looked at Hoss.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m sorry,\u201d he apologized.<\/p>\n Hoss smiled.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s all right. We\u2019re all irritable. You just show it more than we do,\u201d Hoss teased.<\/p>\n Adam chuckled.<\/p>\n \u201cI guess we\u2019d best try and get back to sleep. It\u2019ll be another a long, hot day tomorrow.\u201d Adam Hoss nodded.<\/p>\n The day finally arrived when the work was done.<\/p>\n \u201cWork\u2019s all done, boys. What shall we do?\u201d Ben asked.<\/p>\n \u201cHow about relax by the lake. It\u2019s cooler there,\u201d Adam suggested.<\/p>\n They rode to the lake and rested under a tree.<\/p>\n \u201cSure feels good to relax,\u201d Adam said.<\/p>\n \u201cYep,\u201d Hoss drawled.<\/p>\n \u201cNice and cool in the shade,\u201d Joe said.<\/p>\n \u201cYep,\u201d Adam drawled.<\/p>\n Ben smiled listening to his sons\u2019 conversations and how lazy it sounded.
