She served him the coffee and pie he had requested and stood at the table until he took notice that she wasn\u2019t leaving. Usually he was one to banter with her so she was concerned that something might be wrong which is what he asked her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, but I was wondering if something was wrong with you. You seem extra quiet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust my brothers. They\u2019ve been giving me a harder time than usual.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about this time?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one has asked me to the dance. They\u2019ve both had multiple offers to mull over, and I haven\u2019t had one. They both have theories, but most center on me being too picky, too serious, too arrogant, and well, you can guess at the rest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, there are those stories about you spanking a woman who was a guest in your home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was one time, and she destroyed my guitar, my brand new guitar that I sent away for all the way to New York.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat could be seen as a good reason, I suppose. Now there is the saloon girl you took up with who got killed and you ended up in jail. You\u2019ve ended up in jail charged with murder more than once. That could be offputting to a lady, don\u2019t you think?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sitting here free so nothing ever came of any of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, you were always found to be innocent, but you do seem to get in a lot of messes. And the friends you pick! Tom Wilson, Howard Mead, Sam Bord, Sherman Clegg.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClegg was no friend.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, you get the general idea though. And all the ladies you\u2019ve been with, and not a one ever got a ring.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt wasn\u2019t that I wasn\u2019t trying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou didn\u2019t seem to try too hard with Laura Dayton.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He smirked a little. \u201cDo you blame me for that one?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll right, that one was smart. I\u2019ll give you that. Aren\u2019t you ever lonely?\u201d She could see that hit home.<\/p>\n<p>With eyes that seemed to reflect a million miles of empty trails, Adam looked at her. \u201cYou\u2019re good for me. I like talking with you. If it was within the rules, I\u2019d ask you to the dance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I thought you weren\u2019t toying with me, maybe I\u2019d ask you to the dance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Adam Cartwright pushed the plate and cup of coffee away as he looked around the restaurant. It was two in the afternoon and all the other customers had left the small caf\u00e9. He stood and Marcy thought she might have offended him somehow so she expected he would drop some money on the table and leave. Instead, he took one of her hands and tugged to see if she would willingly step toward him. She did. He wrapped his other arm around her waist and pulled her close as he moved his hand from her hand to her cheek caressing it softly as he leaned down and kissed the other cheek. Kissing her nose next, he moved to her lips and brushed his lips across hers before pressing his lips to hers. She was grateful for that muscular arm around her waist. She wouldn\u2019t have been able to stand without it. Pulling back a few inches then, he looked into her eyes and she could still feel the warm breath as he asked her a question.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you willing to ask me to the dance now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDance? What dance?\u201d He smiled down at her. \u201cOh, the dance. Yes, would you take me to the dance?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"author\"><span class=\"responsive-hide\">by\u00a0<strong><a class=\"username\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bonanzatrailriders.com\/memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&amp;u=58\">AH83<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0\u00bb\u00a0<\/span>Sat Oct 13, 2018 6:54 pm<\/p>\n<div class=\"content\">\n<p>Lucy and her sister, Isabelle were walking down the boardwalk in Virginia City when they spotted a poster for an upcoming dance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBelle, it\u2019s a women\u2019s dance! The women are to ask the men to the dance,\u201d Lucy read.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat should be fun. Who will you ask?\u201d Isabelle asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d Lucy shrugged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh come on, I know you\u2019ll want to ask Adam Cartwright. I know you like him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo does every other girl in Virginia City. I\u2019m sure he\u2019s already been asked. I don\u2019t think I\u2019ll go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat if he hasn\u2019t been asked yet?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBelle, I could never ask him to a dance. I\u2019m not smart enough for him. Or even pretty enough. Adam likes girls who are smart and pretty,\u201d Lucy replied.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLuc, you are pretty. Don\u2019t think otherwise. I\u2019ve seen how he looks at you when we\u2019ve been at other socials or at church.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe probably thinks I\u2019m ugly and wonders how I can show my face in public.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Isabelle playfully smacked her sister\u2019s arm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStop it, Lucy. He likes you. You should ask. There\u2019s no harm in it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI guess.\u201d Lucy sighed.<\/p>\n<p>Days later, Lucy was still agonizing over the dance and Adam. Lucy and Isabelle were at lunch talking about the dance again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow am I to ask? I can\u2019t even get the courage to ask him! He\u2019s come in here a few times to send telegrams for his father and I go to ask him, but chicken out,\u201d Lucy lamented.<\/p>\n<p>Lucy worked as a telegrapher in Virginia City and enjoyed the work. Her father was a farmer. Their older brother, Steve, helped on the farm also. The girls got jobs in town to help support the family.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have already asked Ryan. Steve\u2019 been asked too. I heard that Adam\u2019s been asked many times to the dance,\u201d<br \/>\nIsabelle said taking a bite of her sandwich.<\/p>\n<p>Lucy groaned. \u201cI\u2019m too late.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, you\u2019re not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe hasn\u2019t said yes to any of those girls. He said that he\u2019s waiting for the right girl to ask.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re joshing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not. You should ask!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut he\u2019ll say no. I\u2019m not the right girl for him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSure you are. Adam will say yes to you because you\u2019re the one he wants to be with. That girl is you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat sounds like a fairy tale,\u201d Lucy scoffed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd look where that got Cinderella,\u201d Isabelle joked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh you.\u201d Lucy laughed.<\/p>\n<p>The next day, Lucy was walking back to the telegraph office when she ran into Adam.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAdam, I\u2019m sorry, I didn\u2019t see you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s all right. I was hoping to see you,\u201d he replied.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were?\u201d she asked in surprise.<\/p>\n<p>Adam smiled and nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, I have been wanting to talk to you. I, um, wondered if you wanted to go to the dance with me?\u201d Lucy<br \/>\nstuttered mumbled.<\/p>\n<p>She had looked away when she asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry, I didn\u2019t hear what you said.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked up at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wondered if you wanted to go to the dance with me,\u201d she repeated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would love to go to the dance with you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou would?\u201d Her voice going up on octave.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I heard you were waiting for the right girl to ask you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did and it was you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lucy\u2019s eyebrows went up in surprise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t think I would be the right girl.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, you are and I would be happy to accompany the prettiest girl in Virginia City to the dance. With her aunt\u2019s help, Millie settled in quickly and was smitten almost immediately with one of the handsome Cartwrights. The problem was Clementine couldn\u2019t tell which one, until one day\u2026<\/p>\n<p>The ladies left the sweet shop and were heading home when they spied the four Cartwrights across the street. Millie began to get all fluttery as she had said she wanted to ask one of them to the Harvest Dance but couldn\u2019t get up her nerve. Ben and Hoss headed their way so Clemmie came up with an idea.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLook dearie, let me show you how to ask a gentleman to the dance, then you can do the same for your gentleman.\u201d She patted Millie\u2019s hand and stepped toward Ben as the men stopped to greet them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCoo Benjamin, what a lovely day it is.\u201d She smiled at Ben and continued. \u201cMight I ask if you would like to accompany me to the Harvest Dance at the end of the month?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hoss missed his pa\u2019s nervous swallow as his own eyes were on the lovely red-haired Miss Millie.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy, I\u2019d be delighted to accompany you to the dance, Clementine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Clemmie turned to Millie to say how easy that was but suddenly Mille burst into tears and ran home.<\/p>\n<p>Apologizing to the men, Clemmie followed her. Ben and Hoss shrugged at each other and moved on.<\/p>\n<p>At the house, Clemmie got Millie to calm down and was shocked as the problem was revealed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh, Aunt Clemmie, it\u2019s all ruined. Couldn\u2019t you see that I wanted to ask Mister Cartwright to the dance and now it\u2019s impossible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Clemmie thought fast. \u201cMy dear Millie, Benjamin is much too old for you an\u2019 besides didn\u2019t you see how Hoss was smilin&#8217; at ye so happily? He\u2019s the one ye need to be askin\u2019 to the dance, luv.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Millie looked at her aunt with wet, puppy-dog eyes. \u201cReally, but he\u2019s so\u2026.so\u2026..\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSmitten with ye. Oh my dear, let\u2019s go find him and you can see for yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ladies caught up to Hoss outside the general store. Clementine nudged Millie forward with a wink.<\/p>\n<p>Millie rolled her sea blue eyes up to Hoss. \u201cUh, Mister&#8230;I mean Hoss, would you like to go to the Harvest Dance with me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWoo-hoo, darlin\u2019! It was difficult to get the meaning across in 600 words. <\/strong><strong>I plan to flesh out this vignette with more detail later.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Hope you enjoy.<\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"content\"><strong class=\"text-strong\">Weiberfastnacht<\/strong><br \/>\nBen Cartwright scanned the tidy businesses and residences of Germantown, Ohio as his small covered cart moved down the main street in the fading light. The town was busy with pedestrians when he pulled his cart to a stop. There was an air of frivolity amongst the townspeople that passed by.\u201cI\u2019m hungry, Pa.\u201d The dark-haired four year-old boy&#8217;s weary voice informed to his father.Ben set the brake and wrapped the reins around the handle. \u201cMe too, son. That\u2019s why we\u2019re stopping. Let\u2019s go see what we can find.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not far down the boardwalk they found a restaurant. Ben was surprised to find the establishment empty of patrons when they entered. Hearing the bell on the door, a woman in her twenties with dark braids coiled on the sides of her head came out from the back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWillkommen!\u201d The woman wiped her hands on her apron offering them a merry greeting and sweet smile.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood evening, miss. My son and I were hoping to get some supper. Are you still serving?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYa. You can get your evening meal. There is plenty.\u201d The woman spoke with a heavy German accent. \u201cPlease have a seat. Would you like Sauerbraten or Wiener schnitzel?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ben\u2019s brows rose. \u201cI\u2019m not familiar with either. Maybe one of each. What\u2019s this Weiberfastnacht and kisses business, and a dance?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marta Schmidt had a musical laugh. Ach no! No kisses required here, even if it is Weiberfastnacht &#8212; women\u2019s festival. She turned to go into the kitchen and then paused. \u201cOh, my name is Marta. Welcome to Germantown.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you. I\u2019m Ben Cartwright and this is my son, Adam.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marta returned shortly with their dinner. No other guests came in; so she ran back and forth checking on the Cartwrights and cleaning up the kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re probably in a hurry to close up\u201d, Ben commented when Marta came to check on them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo need to rush.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re not going to the dance?\u201d Ben&#8217;s eyes twinkled with his question.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot this year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot even on the special ladies\u2019 night?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, there was only one man &#8212;\u201d Marta looked away. \u201cHe\u2019s been gone for a while now..\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry. It\u2019s been four years since I lost my wife.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m very sorry, Mr. Cartwright &#8212; Adam.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPa gets sad get sometimes.\u201d Adam piped up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAdam.\u201d Ben gently scolded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s all right, Mr. Cartwright. Adam is just speaking the truth and that\u2019s a good thing. I understand, all too well.\u201d Marta\u2019s eyes were shining.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease tell me about your husband.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAch, you don\u2019t have time for all that. Adam is tired.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAdam is fine. We have time. Please? Sometimes it helps to talk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marta and Ben had no sense of the passage of time as each shared about the loves they had lost. They suddenly realized that Adam was curled up on the bench by the door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m so sorry to have kept you.\u201d Marta rose and reached out to clear the dishes from the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot at all. It was my pleasure.\u201d Ben\u2019s dark eyes radiated warmth.<\/p>\n<p>He stood and held out his hand to Marta. \u201cI know it\u2019s Weiberfastnacht, but may I have this dance.<\/p>\n<p>Marta\u2019s head dropped, but then she placed her hand in Ben\u2019s. Though no music played, they waltzed carefully in the opening between the tables. After a few moments, they came to a stop.<\/p>\n<p>Ben bowed and then gazed at Marta sincerely. \u201cThank you for the dance, your company and good food. He pressed some coins into her hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s not necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ben curled Marta\u2019s fingers around the coins. \u201cThank you. I forgot the sourdough starter is about the Harvest Dance. Thanks AC.<\/p>\n<p>Ok so here&#8217;s the thing. I go over to the Ponderosa to ask Adam Cartwright if he wants to go to the dance and I find he&#8217;s already been asked. If I find the trail sister who&#8230;.well anyways I&#8217;m ticked off. This is not the news I want to hear.<\/p>\n<p>I head over to this saloon place to get a brandy. It&#8217;s for medicinal purposes you understand. I have a very bad knee and Doc Martin won&#8217;t give me any more laudanum because&#8230;&#8230;he hates me.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway I&#8217;m in this Saloon getting very happy and telling anyone who will listen about this party going on and well long story short I&#8217;m here with Bill Ender&#8217;s and Billy McCord.<br \/>\nUgh how am I going to get through a whole night with these two. Bill Ender&#8217;s keeps going on about his ex friend Adam and Billy keeps talking about getting his first notch. If he means on the bed post he can just forget it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"content\">\n<p>Well anyway here I am. I came early so I could pick a quiet corner to hide in.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve come with a huge pork pie for everyone to eat but it fell in the Saloon and someone stood on it and I think someone might have taken a bite out of it so&#8230;I don&#8217;t know.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m wearing this fine lace dress, I know you don&#8217;t need to hear those details but I&#8217;m looking very fetching in it so I&#8217;m going to show off and I have sheet music to the Irish Ballad The Wild Rover.
