I wrote the first part and Hart4Ben added to it, and we kept going.<\/p>\n<p><strong>AC1830 and Hart4Ben<\/strong><br \/>\nPonderosa Home<\/p>\n<p>{AC1830}<br \/>\nMade from pine, from the trees that were felled<br \/>\nIt stands tall, it stands strong, a sweet smell.<br \/>\nThe father saw his dream<br \/>\nThe boys stood and beamed<br \/>\nAnd oh the stories it could tell.<\/p>\n<p>He needed to do things his way<br \/>\nNo help was wanted that day<br \/>\nFlume and friendship no more<br \/>\nHis morale out the door<br \/>\nHe came home disillusioned and betrayed.<\/p>\n<p>His father listened with care<br \/>\nHis brothers a quiet pair<br \/>\nHe told his sad tale<br \/>\nHow he\u2019d managed to fail<br \/>\nAnd he learned his family was there.<\/p>\n<p>{Hart4Ben}<br \/>\nSitting by a crackling fire<br \/>\nThere are times it may inspire<br \/>\nA conversation deep<br \/>\nAs doubts begin to creep<br \/>\nWhen embroiled in a situation dire.<\/p>\n<p>What point does one\u2019s moral obligation end?<br \/>\nSome ask how you can do this to an old friend?<br \/>\nWhat will you do?<br \/>\nI\u2019ll think it through.<br \/>\nMight be a coward and to all I will bend.<\/p>\n<p>{AC1830}<br \/>\nHe sat by the bed and prayed<br \/>\nHoping his son would stay<br \/>\nHow many times<br \/>\nHad he feared for good-byes<br \/>\n\u201cPa? Really, I\u2019m okay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>{Hart4Ben}<br \/>\nGot to find a place for an out of town guest.<br \/>\nPa, you know the Widow Hawkins\u2019 place is best.<br \/>\nClean towels and great food.<br \/>\nThe only place that\u2019s good.<br \/>\nOh alright, Pa conceded, a wee bit stressed.<\/p>\n<p>The people\u2019s talk is more than enough for me.<br \/>\nI\u2019ll have no smirks or innuendo from you three.<br \/>\nIt was only a church picnic.<br \/>\nAdam, can you come real quick?<br \/>\nI&#8217;m with you Pa, right down the aisle I\u2019ll be!<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>AC1830<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Colors<\/p>\n<p>Warm brown, umber, black<br \/>\nColors of the earth beneath his feet<br \/>\nWarm brown, umber, black<br \/>\nColors of the eyes that found their dream.<\/p>\n<p>Flecks of gold fill the sky<br \/>\nColors of the sunrise and sunset<br \/>\nFlecks of gold fill his eyes<br \/>\nStalwart. as he watches and protects.<\/p>\n<p>Azure, sapphire, crystal blue<br \/>\nMountain lake, a jewel well known<br \/>\nAzure, sapphire, crystal blue<br \/>\nEyes gently caring for all that roam.<\/p>\n<p>Jade, olive, emerald, pine<br \/>\nTowering sentinels, strong in the wind<br \/>\nJade, olive, emerald, pine<br \/>\nEyes the color of the land, free as the wind.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"text-strong\">Of Heart and Home<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A tree is felled, and then another,<br \/>\nLines in the dirt, the shape to mark<br \/>\nMuscles strained, by sweat smothered<br \/>\nLogs raised and set in light and dark<br \/>\nLove built the home around sons and patriarch.<\/p>\n<p>He raised three sons, tall and true<br \/>\nAll to live and breathe the land,<br \/>\nDaily lives to be renewed.<br \/>\nOne has roamed, his dream so grand<br \/>\nReturns to home, his heart to stand.<\/p>\n<p>Among the trees a home sits proud<br \/>\nOf wood and stone it stands<br \/>\nWarmth, laughter, love abound<br \/>\nMemories through the years have spanned<br \/>\nLove keeps them strong, bonded to their land.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>A Haiku:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Autumn golds, reds, browns<\/p>\n<p>Colorful leaves wafting down<\/p>\n<p>Nature&#8217;s restful crown<\/p>\n<p>===================<\/p>\n<p><strong>BettyHT<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Daffodils on the Ponderosa<\/p>\n<p>Daffodils blooming like a sea of gold in my valley<br \/>\nTo plant flowers on a working ranch, Marie, my dear<br \/>\nWhen you did, I laughed at such frivolity<br \/>\nBut now it lets my heart warm at memories so clear<\/p>\n<p>Whenever Pa rides by here I\u2019ve seen him stop to admire<br \/>\nThese gorgeous yellow flowers with their hint of whimsy<br \/>\nI\u2019ll draw a picture so he can gaze at each stately spire<br \/>\nWhenever he chooses to remember this golden sea<\/p>\n<p>These purty yeller flowers make for a right fine walk<br \/>\nI can hear birds singing and bugs a buzzing away<br \/>\nLittle rabbits hop about as long as we don\u2019t talk<br \/>\nSure happy Pa let Marie plant \u2018em that long ago May<\/p>\n<p>All these pretty yellow flowers here where no one can see<br \/>\nIt\u2019s a shame to waste them when they could do so much better<br \/>\nThere\u2019s enough for a big bouquet for Sue and one for Rosemary<br \/>\nAnother for Beth and for Mary and a last one for Ginger.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>If Adam Was Your Father<\/p>\n<p>If you respect your father, love his hijinks, and think he\u2019s just the best<br \/>\nYou know when accepting a husband it\u2019s one like him and reject all the rest<br \/>\nThat would create a problem<br \/>\nIf your father was Adam<br \/>\nA world wide search for one like him could be an impossible quest.<\/p>\n<p>So actually be quite glad that Adam Cartwright wasn\u2019t your father<br \/>\nTo find a husband so strong, bold, and handsome would be such a bother<br \/>\nCan\u2019t be that any man is out there<br \/>\nWho could ever hope to compare<br \/>\nYou would have been destined to search the world \u2018round and never find another.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Friends at Thanksgiving<\/p>\n<p>Went to a Thanksgiving party to be with my old friends<br \/>\nWe met and talked, ate and drank, \u2018til the day ends<br \/>\nA chance to share those memories that bound our lives together<br \/>\nWe liked each other as much as ever, still tight as friends forever<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes celebration is with family from near and far<br \/>\nAnd love them all but there\u2019s no choice in whom they are<br \/>\nFriends are there by choices and circumstances<br \/>\nNot family by blood but in my heart by unforeseen chances.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Limericks Four<\/p>\n<p>Hoss&#8217; Complaint<br \/>\nYou&#8217;re a lucky one, Little Joe Cartwright, you are<br \/>\nEveryone knows it around here, and near and far.<br \/>\nYa got looks and smarts<br \/>\nAlways breaking girls&#8217; hearts.<br \/>\nThey sees me n Adam as fish eggs but you like caviar.<\/p>\n<p>Joe&#8217;s Answer<br \/>\nYa big galoot, none of what you say about me is true<br \/>\nYou two got all the benefits a Cartwright is due<br \/>\nI&#8217;m smaller and shorter<br \/>\nNot as strong and younger<br \/>\nOf course, I&#8217;m cute, smart, brave, and a greater value.<\/p>\n<p>Adam&#8217;s Lament<br \/>\nIt does no good to complain about what&#8217;s already on the shelf<br \/>\nNor does one do well to brag about creating a selfish vain self<br \/>\nWe&#8217;ve got independence and free rein<br \/>\nWe&#8217;re not treated like a birdbrain.<br \/>\nWe avoided marriage too; all the fun with no chains on oneself.<\/p>\n<p>Ben&#8217;s Refrain<br \/>\nThrees sons have I, as strong as the Ponderosa pines behind me<br \/>\nEach with qualities to admire but as different as any three could be<br \/>\nGrandchildren though I do need<br \/>\nMarriage is the word they won&#8217;t heed<br \/>\nPerhaps I should adopt a more agreeable son than these three!<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<div class=\"content\">\n<p>Affairs of the Heart: The Broken-Hearted<\/p>\n<p>My heart was born broken<br \/>\nIn its depths, sadness reigned<br \/>\nLove has never awoken<br \/>\nDeath at my birth left it stained<\/p>\n<p>Gazing into a woman&#8217;s eyes<br \/>\nAs Lotta knew when I kissed her<br \/>\nNever would she be my prize<br \/>\nAs a good man, I was a poseur<\/p>\n<p>Appealing an angel Annie O was<br \/>\nBut I couldn&#8217;t let myself be tempted<br \/>\nAlthough I violated no rules or laws<br \/>\nHer life with me would be tormented<\/p>\n<p>So many I lost to another<br \/>\nFrom Virginia to Margarita to Dolores<br \/>\nTo friend or stranger or brother<br \/>\nNever the star, always the chorus<\/p>\n<p>I thought marrying Laura was wise<br \/>\nBut she hurt me worse than the others<br \/>\nNo matter, she, I cannot despise,<br \/>\nWe never were true lovers<\/p>\n<p>I though Anne was my last chance<br \/>\nKisses were sweet and promised more<br \/>\nWe made the moves of a lovers&#8217; so I might save it up for you to try.I always wear my Sunday best clothes to school,<br \/>\nAnd I bring my best parasol to keep me cool.<br \/>\nDon&#8217;t go thinkin it has somethin to do with and sickly lay Ben Cartwright on that awful day.A voice rang out and in desperation he looked about to see.<\/p>\n<p>The haunting voice came taunting, in his mind relentlessly taunting,<\/p>\n<p>A sanity daunting taunting of things past and things to be,<\/p>\n<p>Taunting, taunting no escape from suffering, death, and calamity.<\/p>\n<p>The mark of the Cartwright curse &#8211; a black letter reverie.<\/p>\n<p>Grief came rolling, like a wagon wheel rolling,<\/p>\n<p>Rolling his soul to dust as someday it would be.<\/p>\n<p>Rolling, rolling, life keeps rolling, though his burdens great and view.<\/p>\n<p>The voice shrieked in pain, a thrashing steed he did see.<\/p>\n<p>Grief came upon him crushing, like a millstone crushing,<\/p>\n<p>His soul crushing though sons he had three.<\/p>\n<p>Crushing, crushing, his withering soul crushing, despite owning the Ponderosa &#8211; Pine Tree.<\/p>\n<p>The mark of the Cartwright curse &#8211; a black letter &#8220;C&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Love for your son, your very first born, will leave your heart rent and sorely torn.<\/p>\n<p>He wants not your empire!&#8221; The voice shouted with glee.<\/p>\n<p>A heart destined for wandering, unsettled and wandering,<\/p>\n<p>Perpetually wandering over the land and sea.<\/p>\n<p>Wandering, wandering, continually wandering, &#8220;The prince of your kingdom he his defining plight.<\/p>\n<p>Not even a pure heart will save him&#8221;, the voice cried with disdain, &#8220;You&#8217;ll see!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A father in grief drowning, miserably drowning,<\/p>\n<p>To the depths drowning in a black sea.<\/p>\n<p>Drowning, drowning, for no return shall there be.<\/p>\n<p>The mark of the Cartwright curse &#8211; a black letter &#8220;C&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;His mother&#8217;s fiery spirit will become his fine art, and still he will be the delight of your heart.<\/p>\n<p>His beloved wife and child&#8221;, the voice cackled shrill, &#8220;will suffer the same fate as your wives three.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In grief his life burning, FOREVER burning,<\/p>\n<p>With pain and vengeance burning, his heart will be.<\/p>\n<p>Burning, burning, your heart will be churning, to watch your child suffer, suffer like thee.<\/p>\n<p>The mark of the Cartwright curse &#8211; a black letter &#8220;C&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Then awaking with beaded brow and quaking heart, Ben gave his family a frightful start.<\/p>\n<p>His fevered stupor giving way to a clear mind and eyes that truly see.<\/p>\n<p>His heart began rejoicing, gladly rejoicing,<\/p>\n<p>With sweet rejoicing to be with Marie, Adam, Hoss, and Joseph was he.<\/p>\n<p>Rejoicing, rejoicing, in relief rejoicing, the voice now silent and the fateful mark nowhere to see.<\/p>\n<p>The mark of the Cartwright curse &#8211; a black letter &#8220;C&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>But later in the dark of night, on the lamplit wall appeared a horrific sight.<\/p>\n<p>And the voice birthday celebration.<br \/>\nWe were to use &#8220;green&#8221; in a poem for either Lorne or Ben.<\/strong><strong class=\"text-strong\">THE JOURNEY<\/strong><br \/>\nThrough his spyglass he looks for the lamp burning, the hope of his love.<br \/>\nSuddenly the world goes black save a pair of tiny, bright eyes.<br \/>\nOne foot must go before the other forcing the darkness to a constant gray.<br \/>\nA journey begins.<\/p>\n<p>Crystal blue eyes and a lilting voice beckon him to rejoin life and love.<br \/>\nHe struggles, but allows the sunlight to flood in only to have his heart pierced again.<br \/>\nThe light fades away, yet two pairs of eyes plead for him to hang on.<br \/>\nThe journey continues.<\/p>\n<p>Years pass, love seems elusive, but a spirit, wild and free, captures his heart.<br \/>\nFate steals his joy and brings desperation and despair.<br \/>\nGreen eyes haunt him and call him \u201cPa\u201d.<br \/>\nLife journeys on.<\/p>\n<p>First one foot, then another and eventually a way out of grief is seen.<br \/>\nSkies are blue and meadows are green once more.<br \/>\nLove is gone, but never leaves.<br \/>\nCartwrights journey
