 <\/p>\n

Adam Cartwright turned from the window when he heard another person enter the room.\u00a0 He watched as recognition and then disdain entered the young man\u2019s face.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI never expected to see you here.\u201d\u00a0 The comment was delivered with a sneer worthy of Chase Winthrop\u2019s most illustrious forbearers.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Adam raised an eyebrow and allowed his lips to curl at the edges.\u00a0 \u201cNo, I don\u2019t suppose you expected the Rube from the West to be one of the candidates for the Blackburn Medal.\u201d\u00a0 Adam leaned back against the edge of the window ledge and nonchalantly adjusted his jacket sleeves as his lips curled even more.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Blackburn Medal was the most prestigious award given to any senior at the college, and Adam was one of the three candidates chosen by the faculty to present themselves for personal interviews.\u00a0 The other two were Chase Winthrop, scion of the Boston Winthrops, and Albert Braun whose family owned half a shipping fleet.\u00a0 Albert was a quiet, studious fellow who had arrived at the dean\u2019s house first and now sat nervously trying not to stare.\u00a0 Chase Winthrop was the product of centuries of self-indulgent snobbery and seemed bent on upholding the family tradition of condescending self-importance.\u00a0 He had hated Adam Cartwright on sight and allowed no opportunity for insult to pass though he was careful to keep them all veiled or backstabbing.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A flicker crossed Winthrop\u2019s face as he heard Adam refer to his favorite appellation for the student from the wilds of the Western territories, for he recognized the edge in Adam\u2019s voice.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI have meant no offense, Cartwright.\u201d\u00a0 Chase\u2019s tone was hollow, and his smile was that of a wax doll.\u00a0 \u201cYou realize it was just a good-natured jibe.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNo more offense was taken than was meant,\u201d Adam replied coolly.\u00a0 Then he straightened and added, \u201cOf course, in my more uncivilized part of the world only a man\u2019s friends are allowed such jibes; others. . .\u201d Adam let his reference dangle and shrugged in a way that moved his hand from his hip in a gesture that conveyed exactly what Adam intended.\u00a0 Chase Winthrop had never seen a man draw a pistol, but he knew Adam had handled one and involuntarily took a step back.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Just then the dean\u2019s assistant entered and requested Albert Braun to follow him. After Albert exited the room to be the first interviewed, Adam took a seat and casually stretched out his long legs.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Chase was over a foot shorter than Adam and sensitive about his height.\u00a0 Disconcerted by his response to Adam\u2019s movement and by his rival\u2019s calm self-assurance, Chase\u2019s temper sparked.\u00a0 \u201cThe medal\u2019s mine, you know!\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cPerhaps.\u00a0 I\u2019m sure your family has purchased more expensive trinkets for you, but then Albert\u2019s family is capable of quite a sizable bid.\u00a0 Of course, some relative of yours might call in a favor.\u201d\u00a0 Adam\u2019s nonchalant tone added even more sting to his words.\u00a0 Chase\u2019s eyes blazed.\u00a0 Then Adam looked directly into Chase\u2019s eyes.\u00a0 \u201cAt least, if I win, I\u2019ll know it was awarded on merit.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Chase Winthrop had never thrown a punch in his well-protected life, but he lunged at Adam angered beyond reason.\u00a0 Adam was on his feet in a second and blocked Chase\u2019s wild swing easily and with just enough force to topple Boston\u2019s finest on his well-clad behind.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI wouldn\u2019t try it again,\u201d Adam chided looking down at his would-be opponent.\u00a0 Then he smiled.\u00a0 \u201cFighting is such poor manners when one is a guest.\u00a0 Now, if you would care to meet me in a proper arena.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Chase Winthrop breathed heavily as fear and returning reason had him shake his head.\u00a0 Adam turned his back and walked to look out the window once more.\u00a0 Still seated on the floor, Chase Winthrop stared at the black expanse of Adam Cartwright\u2019s jacket and vowed to have his revenge on the barbarian.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Chase Winthrop had regained his feet and his composure before he was the next candidate led from the room.\u00a0 Adam turned from the window then and settled on a red velvet chair.\u00a0 He sighed wondering if he should have done more to avoid the confrontation with Winthrop.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Someone could have walked in on us. Now wouldn\u2019t that have sealed the deal!\u00a0 Not that I have a snowball\u2019s chance in Hades of winning the Blackburn Medal over Winthrop and Braun.\u00a0 Winthrop\u2019s not the only snob on this campus, and some of the others are on the faculty.<\/span><\/i>\u00a0 Adam\u2019s arms slipped across his chest, and he absentmindedly tugged at his left ear.\u00a0 <\/span>Well, there\u2019s nothing to be done about that.\u00a0 Pa will be well-pleased just to hear I was a candidate.<\/span><\/i>\u00a0 The nervous tension he had felt since receiving the committee\u2019s invitation to the competitive interviews slowly drained from his body, and he was perfectly at ease with himself when the dean\u2019s assistant ushered him before the committee.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>ACACACACAC<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Now, that wasn\u2019t so bad.\u00a0 In fact, I think it went rather well.<\/span><\/i> Adam smiled as he mentally congratulated himself on his interview.\u00a0 He reached for his hat and settled it on his head at a slightly jaunty angle.\u00a0 As he turned to leave, a hand on his shoulder made him pause.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cCartwright, might I have a private word with you?\u201d\u00a0 It was Professor Bell, one of the committee members who had just conducted his interview.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOf course, sir.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m leaving also.\u00a0 Perhaps we could speak as we walk?\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Adam suppressed the inquiring rise of his eyebrow and politely agreed.\u00a0 As they reached the lane in front of the dean\u2019s house, Professor Bell began speaking.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI wanted you to know that I was quite favorably impressed with how you handled yourself just now, as were other members of the committee.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhy, thank you, Professor Bell.\u00a0 As a group, well, you are very impressive.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAnd intimidating?\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Adam gave the professor a self-deprecating smile.\u00a0 \u201cYes, sir.\u00a0 I couldn\u2019t disagree with that.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYou didn\u2019t give a hint of being intimidated.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThen perhaps I\u2019m a better actor than I knew.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Professor Bell came to a stop and turned his full gaze on Adam.\u00a0 \u201cWere you acting, young man?\u00a0 Were you really quaking in your boots?\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Adam lifted his chin.\u00a0 \u201cNo, sir, actually I wasn\u2019t.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhy?\u00a0 Is the Blackburn medal of little concern to you?\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Adam answered honestly.\u00a0 \u201cWinning the Blackburn is of great concern to me, Professor Bell.\u00a0 I suppose I wasn\u2019t intimidated, well, for several reasons.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhich are?\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Adam\u2019s stance became one that mimicked a junior officer in front of his captain.\u00a0 \u201cTo understand the first, you would have to have met my father and grandfather; I\u2019ve faced grilling at the hands of two very intimidating men on a regular basis.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A slight smile came to Professor Bell\u2019s lips.\u00a0 \u201cHave you now?\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Adam smiled back.\u00a0 \u201cYes, sir, and lived to tell the tale.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sure some of those tales are quite interesting.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNot to someone with more important matters on their mind like yourself,\u201d Adam retorted neatly.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYour other reasons?\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWell, while receiving the Blackburn would be a great honor and one that I\u2019d dearly appreciate, I realize that, well, as my stepmother would have said, it would be <\/span>lagniappe<\/span><\/i>, something extra.\u00a0 I came here for knowledge, not honors, after all.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The professor nodded.\u00a0 \u201cQuite so.\u00a0 And your final reason, Mr. Cartwright?\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Adam\u2019s eyes dropped, and his voice lost volume, but he answered forthrightly, \u201cI\u2019m a realist, sir.\u00a0 My family name doesn\u2019t carry the weight of Winthrop or Braun.\u201d\u00a0 He raised his eyes then to read the professor\u2019s reaction.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAhh, you are a realist, my boy!\u201d\u00a0 Professor Bell placed his hand on Adam\u2019s forearm and said simply, \u201cAcademically, the three of you are neck in neck.\u00a0 Each of your reputations outside the classroom have their own merits.\u00a0 Your interviews, well, I\u2019ve already told you that you did well.\u00a0 Still, the committee considers many factors, and admittedly family prestige and money have a certain influence with some members.\u201d\u00a0 The professor\u2019s hand patted Adam\u2019s arm.\u00a0 \u201cThe decision is not yet made, Mr. Cartwright, and there are some on the committee who give those factors little consideration.\u00a0 At any rate, I want you to remember that win or lose you were a worthy candidate.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Adam\u2019s dimples were at their deepest as he replied, \u201cThank you, professor.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Adam stretched himself out on his bed, folded his arms beneath his head, crossed his ankles, and silently cursed his stupidity<\/span>.\u00a0 It\u2019s your own fault, but why would she…\u201d<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The door exploded inward, and Andrew Carver entered with a roar.\u00a0 \u201cCarwright, what in blazes?\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Adam did not even turn his head toward his roommate but continued to stare at the ceiling.\u00a0 \u201cSo, you\u2019ve heard already.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Andrew plopped down onto his own bed.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s spreading across the campus like wildfire, not to mention the rest of high society.\u201d Andrew shook his head.\u00a0 \u201cWhat were you thinking.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThat she was a pretty girl.\u00a0 A very pretty and willing girl.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAnd nothing.\u00a0 We walked into a moonlight garden, chatting pleasantly.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t so much as try to steal a kiss before she turned and dashed inside.\u00a0 I followed to find her sobbing in her father\u2019s arms and accusing me, well, you\u2019ve heard what she was accusing me of.\u00a0 I just don\u2019t understand why she would…\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Andrew slumped against the wall.\u00a0 \u201cThat\u2019s because you lack a vital piece of the puzzle.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Adam sat up and dropped his feet to the floor.\u00a0 \u201cWhat don\u2019t I know?\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSocial family trees.\u00a0 Amelia Bryant\u2019s mother is sister to Anna Van Court Winthrop, one Chase Winthrop\u2019s mother.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s his cousin!\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere you have it.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI… what a fool I\u2019ve been.\u201d\u00a0 Adam ran his hands over his face and through his hair.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNot a fool.\u00a0 It\u2019s not as if no girl before her has ever been willing to walk with you in the moonlight.\u00a0\u00a0 You underestimated Chase\u2019s willingness to stab you in the back even if he had to use his cousin\u2019s hand to do it.\u00a0 You said you just knocked him on his arse?\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNo one else even saw.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWell, it\u2019s not as if he didn\u2019t dislike you before, and there is the Blackburn to consider.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Adam leaned back until his spine was against the bed while his feet remained on the floor.\u00a0 \u201cThe Blackburn.\u00a0 They\u2019d do that to keep me from getting the Blackburn.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Andrew cleared his throat and spoke softly.\u00a0 \u201cYou realize that they have made sure you won\u2019t receive the Blackburn.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d\u00a0 Adam\u2019s voice held a flat acceptance.\u00a0 He slowly exhaled.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019ve received a summons to the dean\u2019s office first thing in the morning.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Andrew leaned forward.\u00a0 \u201cThere are several possibilities.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIncluding expulsion.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWell, then…\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAdam, we\u2019ve shared a room since sophomore year.\u00a0 We know each other.\u201d\u00a0 Adam sat up and looked across the room at the face of his friend.\u00a0 \u201cI owe you…\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNo, no, you owe me nothing.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Andrew made a dismissive gesture.\u00a0 \u201cWhatever, what\u2019s important now is do you trust me?\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cTrust you?\u00a0 Of course, but I don\u2019t…\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAdam if you are to have a chance to graduate and retain what you\u2019ve worked so hard to achieve; well, you are going to have to play a game, a game where you do not know all the rules or enough about the other players.\u00a0 I know both.\u201d\u00a0 Andrew gave Adam a wry smile.\u00a0 \u201cAnd I\u2019m really much smarter than my grades would indicate.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t have to convince me of your intelligence; I\u2019ve told you you\u2019re wasting it often enough.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThen let me put it to good use.\u00a0 I may be able to help you save that hide of yours.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Adam leaned forward.\u00a0 \u201cYou really think you might?\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNo guarantee, but, yes, I think there\u2019s a chance especially if you\u2019ll let me do the dirty work your unbendable spine would never allow Saint Adam to contemplate.\u201d\u00a0 Andrew had started calling his roommate Saint Adam three days after moving in.\u00a0\u00a0 The name had lost its original sting before the first week had passed.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Adam rolled his eyes, then grew serious.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019ll not have you doing anything that will have you facing expulsion right along with me or even in my stead.\u201d\u00a0 Adrew gave a dismissive shrug. \u201cI\u2019ll have your word as a gentleman.\u201d\u00a0 Adam saw the glint in Andrew\u2019s eyes.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span> You know, Carwright, despite what the social register might make one think, I\u2019m not and never have been a gentleman. You\u2019ve told me that more than once, Andy.\u00a0 <\/span><\/i>Adam quickly amended his demand.\u00a0 \u201cNo, I\u2019ll have your word as my friend.\u201d\u00a0 Andrew\u2019s eyes widened in feigned indignation.\u00a0 \u201cAt least I\u2019m not demanding your hand on the Bible, though, I probably should.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Andrew shook his head slowly.\u00a0 \u201cYou have my word.\u201d\u00a0 He raised his hand as he spoke; then smiled and used his pointer finger to draw a cross on his chest.\u00a0 \u201cNow, what was it you said you do in that West of yours?\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSpit in our palms and shake.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 Andrew\u2019s nose wrinkled at the thought.\u00a0 \u201cDon\u2019t bother.\u201d\u00a0 Y<\/span>ou\u2019ll keep your promise or break it as you see fit.\u00a0 You always play by your own rules.\u00a0<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think it\u2019s likely to play out that way in any event.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
