{"id":50532,"date":"2025-02-16T21:39:25","date_gmt":"2025-02-17T02:39:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bonanzabrand.info\/library\/?p=50532"},"modified":"2025-09-27T05:40:04","modified_gmt":"2025-09-27T09:40:04","slug":"did-we-win-by-ac1830","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bonanzabrand.info\/library\/?p=50532","title":{"rendered":"Did We Win (by AC1830)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Summary: The Founders Day horse race was a tradition for Adam and Joe Cartwright, but the question always is &#8211; which brother will win?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Rating: G, Word Count: 772<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>Did we win?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adam sauntered up beside Joe after he spied his youngest brother leaning against the corral railing.\u00a0 In the distance festive band music played and cheers could be heard.\u00a0 Founder\u2019s Day was a big celebration for Virginia City.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adam watched two horses prance around the ring with nervous energy.\u00a0 These were horses the brothers had tamed from the wild and were going to ride in the Founder\u2019s Day horse race.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adam swung under the rail, whistled for his horse and began to saddle him.\u00a0 Out of the corner of his eye he saw Joe do the same.\u00a0 Joe was wearing his best business face as he walked his horse over towards Adam.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLook Adam, since I did most of the training on these horses and all you and Hoss did was catch \u2018em, don\u2019t you think we should split the winnings more fairly?\u00a0 Say sixty-twenty-twenty?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adam scowled at his brother.\u00a0 \u201cNo, I don\u2019t.\u00a0 You know well and good we all chased them and trained them. Thirty percent down the line or you can tell Pa about the race when he gets home tomorrow.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joe\u2019s panicked expression was all the confirmation Adam needed.\u00a0 \u201cOk thirty percent.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Joe led the way out of the corral, Adam smirked.\u00a0 Joe would never quit trying to get a deal that got him more money.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the starting line, Hoss was giving last minute instructions to his brothers.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019ve been over the course.\u00a0 It\u2019s got some muddy sections after yesterday\u2019s rain but if you keep to the center of the road you\u2019ll be fine.\u00a0 Be careful comin\u2019 back inta town though.\u00a0 Some of the road is pretty soft and it\u2019s hard to avoid.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joe and Adam nodded, shook hands with Hoss then each other.\u00a0 Joe smiled his most charming smile, \u201cMay the best brother win.\u201d\u00a0 Mounting up they got ready for the wild ride ahead of them.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The gun sounded and they were off.\u00a0 Joe shot ahead and Adam paced himself.\u00a0 They had to make two circuits of the short race path.\u00a0 He found his spot in the center of the road and fought to defend it, all the while keeping an eye on Joe who was holding onto second place.\u00a0 They had managed to avoid the muddy spots on the first round but a few other riders weren\u2019t so lucky.\u00a0 On the second round, Adam gave his horse its head and took over second place right on Joe\u2019s left flank.\u00a0 With the competition now between them, the brothers easily pulled ahead of the other riders.\u00a0 Their mustangs were holding their own while the other horses were showing obvious signs of tiring.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rounding the final curve, Adam was in the lead by a length, his horse heaving and breathing hard.\u00a0 He steered his horse to the side of the road to avoid the worst of the soft dirt.\u00a0 He glanced back to see if Joe followed.\u00a0 What he saw made his heart stop cold.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joe ran straight into the soft dirt at full speed.\u00a0 The horse\u2019s front legs sank down effectively stopping the horse in its tracks.\u00a0 Joe kept going right over the horse\u2019s head and landed flat and hard on his back.\u00a0 If Adam\u2019s horse hadn\u2019t been squealing as he reined his horse hard around he would have heard the air being forced out of Joe\u2019s lungs as he hit the ground.\u00a0 Joe lay perfectly still in the middle of the road with his horse off to the side, sides heaving.\u00a0 As Adam jumped from the saddle he heard, felt and saw about a half dozen riders bearing down on them.\u00a0 Panicked, he hooked his hands under Joe\u2019s arms and dragged Joe with all the strength he had left\u00a0 to the side of the road just seconds before the horses thundered past.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leaning Joe against a wall, Adam collapsed down beside his brother trying to catch his own breath and to see if Joe was even breathing.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In town, word of the Cartwright brothers\u2019 accident spread like wildfire.\u00a0 Hoss jumped on Chubb and reached the location in seconds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seeing Adam trying to help Joe stand, Hoss ran up and took the other side.\u00a0 Joe looked around dazed and finally located his oldest brother\u2019s face.\u00a0 Joe managed a weak smile at Adam and asked in a quiet voice,\u00a0 \u201cDid I win?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adam put his arm around Joe and traded a look of fear and relief with Hoss.
