Monsters and Maps<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The night started off the same as any other warm Virginia City night.<\/strong><\/p>\n

After dinner Ben went to finish up some paper work and Marie went to help Hop sing clean up the kitchen. \u00a0Little Joe and Hoss played checkers, while Adam started another fascinating chapter in his book.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cOkay Bedtime;\u201d<\/em>\u00a0said Ben in a calm but firm voice.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Whines and pleas of\u00a0\u201cjust a few more minutes\u201d<\/em>\u00a0could be heard from both Hoss and Joe.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cMes fils, you heard your father;\u201d<\/em>\u00a0came Marie’s soft reply.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cWhy does Adam get to stay up later mama?\u201d<\/em>\u00a0was Hoss\u2019s only defense.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s much older than you, and his body does not need as much sleep,\u201d\u00a0<\/em>was her patient response. Every night they went through this same negotiation of bedtime limits.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cI only stay up an hour later Hoss you won\u2019t miss anything really;\u201d\u00a0<\/em>said Adam in a matter of fact voice.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Hoss pouted in his defeat, but suddenly sobs could be heard from little Joe as his pout increased and became even more evident.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cMon petit, what\u2019s wrong?\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Marie scooped him up into her arms and began to kiss his cheek and run her fingers through his soft curls.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t wanna go to sleep, there\u2019s monsters in my woom.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/em>Before Marie could answer Ben stepped in;\u00a0\u201cNow Joseph, I\u2019ve told you before that there is none such monsters in your room.\u201d\u00a0<\/em>Ben was firm yet comforting.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

His sobs quickly turned into cries of persistence as he argued\u00a0\u201cyes there wis and they hide so nobody else can see em,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0which led Marie to give a sharp glare at Ben.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Feeling compelled to prove his statement and satisfy both his son and wife; Ben cradled his young little boy all the way up stairs and began to check every possible \u2018monster hiding spot.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cYou see Joseph; there aren\u2019t any monsters what so ever in your room, will you go to bed now?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cWait papa, you didn\u2019t check under my bwed.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

After a short frustrated sigh, he did as his son requested.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cAlright Joseph; I\u2019ve checked everywhere now and there are as I told you, no monsters. Now let\u2019s get you tucked in.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cBut papa, can I just sleep with you pwease?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cJoseph, the best way to get over your fears is to face them. You may not sleep with us tonight because there are absolutely no monsters in your room and I want you to be a big boy and sleep in your own bed, is that clear?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Obviously defeated, little Joe did none other than comply.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

After both his parents tucked him in and said good night, they gave him looks of reassurance and left the room.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Joe thought for a moment about what his father said; feeling confident like a brave big boy, he drifted into a peaceful sleep while hugging his warm teddy bear.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

After one final yawn, Adam made his mind up to turn in for the night.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

As he nestled into his own soft bed, and his mind began to think about the past day\u2019s events.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

He had completed all his chores early and Hoss was bored around the house drawing pictures so they both went fishing. Then they both got a nice surprise when Pa showed up and he caught a great big fish, unfortunately he got away though.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Adam began to smile at the thought of how funny his Pa looked as he tried his hardest to handle that fish. At first Ben was frustrated that the fish got the best of him, but when he turned around and saw his boys laughing at how wet he became, he couldn\u2019t help but laugh as well.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

As soon as they came home the laughter reignited when the all but innocent little Joe asked; \u201cpapa, how come you got wet?\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Marie filled the house with her contagious laughter as Ben tried to reenact the story.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Adam fell asleep smiling at how great of a day he had.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cAdum, Adumm\u2026 wake up Adum!\u201d little Joe\u2019s whisper became louder and more persistant<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is it?\u201d A drowsy Adam awoke.<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cI heard a noise Adum get up pwease!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cLittle buddy it was probably just the wind, go on back to sleep.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cBut that\u2019s what papa an mama said, I twied to sleep but I heard it again, pwease Adum!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cOkay I\u2019ll check and see but then you have to go back to sleep.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Little Joe grabbed his hand and pulled him along to the best of his ability. \u201cA big brothers job never stops Adam thought to himself.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cAll right I\u2019m here, now where was this noise you heard? \u201c<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Little Joe pointed to a chair in the corner.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Adam lit a lantern and inspected the room, upon finding nothing he decided to reason with him.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cLook little buddy I\u2019ve checked everywhere and there\u2019s no one here. I\u2019ll make you a promise; if you go back to sleep and stay in bed then I\u2019ll take you fishing tomorrow after my chores, how\u2019s that?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cOkay but we gotta make sure I\u2019m safe.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

An idea sparked in Adams mind.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cFollow me buddy.\u201d\u00a0<\/em>Adam had a creative look in his eyes.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

They went down stairs and got altogether some pots, pans and string.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s that for Adum?\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Little Joe asked as he pointed to the contraption on the bottom of the stairs.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cIf a monster were to come up stairs he would trip and make a bunch of noise, then pa and everyone would know to come help you.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Little Joe smiled in satisfaction and then let out a big yawn.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

After Adam tucked Joe back in bed, he gave him a wink and went back to his room and settled in his own bed once again. He pulled up the covers and put his mind at ease, no later than an hour had passed and he felt something on his arm.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cAdum wake up pwease.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cJoe you\u2019re supposed to be in bed, what is it?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cI heard another noise, come see.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cJoe I told you there was nothing in your room.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cBut I heard it down stairs, pwease come see, it might be the twap.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cAlright I\u2019ll go check for you but then you go back to bed. Wait in my room while I check.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Little Joe waited in Adams bed fully alert when he returned but with Ben behind him.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cPapa I heard another noise,\u201d\u00a0<\/em>Joe explained.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cThe only noise I and your mother keep hearing is both your footsteps.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Ben sounded grumpy.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cWell pa, I figured if I checked for him he would feel better.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cI understand Adam, thank you for helping your brother but you should go back to sleep yourself.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Ben picked little Joe off of Adam\u2019s bed.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cYes sir, good night little buddy.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cNight Adum,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0said little Joe as he was carried out.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cNow Joseph I\u2019m absolutely sure that monsters are not real and are not in your room, or in this house for that matter.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cWill you stay with me until I fwall asleep papa?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cAlright, I\u2019ll sit right here and wait.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cOkay, Night papa.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cGood night son\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Ben waited until he was very sure that little Joe was sleeping. He then tip toed out and went to his own room.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Trying not to wake Marie he very carefully slipped into bed. There was no use though; when it came to her children Marie was alert and anxious.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cWhat took you so long mon chou?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cJust Joseph dear, he was having trouble sleeping.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cAnd what did you say to him?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cI just assured him that monsters aren\u2019t real and I waited for him to fall asleep as he requested.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cYou know lots of children his age believe in silly things, perhaps we should have let him sleep in our bed.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s already asleep and I\u2019m sure he\u2019ll get over this faze soon.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Marie settled closer to Ben and fell asleep as he caressed her hair.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Without warning something plopped down on their bed causing them a great panic. They scrambled for a moment trying to ignite their lanterns. Once there was light, the culprit was found.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cJoseph what on earth are you doing?\u201d<\/em>\u00a0They both said in unison.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cI heard it again, really loud too!\u201d His voice was panicked.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cJoseph I\u2019ve told you a dozen times that\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Ben was cut off by a loud sound of pots rattling. Marie grabbed Joe and held him close. Before Ben could reach the door knob Adam and Hoss rushed into the room panicked as well.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cPa I set a trap on the stairs, there\u2019s someone down there!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Hoss ran over and got in bed next to Marie while Adam and Ben headed for the stairs.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Ben stopped at the bottom of the stairs staring at the familiar dark image. Adam was right behind him with a lantern.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cPa it\u2019s just Hop sing.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cI know son, let\u2019s help him up.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It was the crack of dawn and the entire Cartwright family was down stairs that morning.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cHop sing I\u2019m sorry you got caught in my trap, it was meant for monsters,\u201d\u00a0<\/em>said Adam.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cHop sing you\u2019re not a monster, why were you in the twap?\u201d Joe was completely curious.<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cIt five in morning I go to start breakfast and I see no pans, I go ask mistah Cartwright if he seen Hop sing\u2019s pans. When Hop sing get to stairs he trip on string. Why little boy make trap with Hop sing\u2019s pans?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cSo no monsters could get me.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Hop sing just shook his head and said;\u00a0\u201cI be right back, you wait here.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cPapa, where\u2019s Hop sing goin?\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Asked little Joe.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Ben just glared at the old clock on his desk and said;\u00a0\u201cat five thirty in the morning, I have no idea.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

After a few minutes Hop sing returned with something in his hand, he then handed it to Joe.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s this?\u201d\u00a0<\/em>Little Joe asked while holding up a small map.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cIt is a map.\u201d Hop sing pointed to a small dot.<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cRight here is where monsters live and they far far away, nowhere near number three son.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cAre you sure?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cYes you very safe from them, they never come here;\u201d Replied Hop sing.<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

At that Little Joe gave the map back to him and went back to bed without anyone having to tuck him in.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Back down stairs Ben was puzzled<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cYou mean to tell me that all I had to do was tell him they live somewhere else?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Hop sing nodded his head and gave Ben the map. \u201cYou no worry mistah Cartwright he grow out of it soon, you keep map.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Then him and Marie collected all the pots and pans and went into the kitchen, giggles from Marie could be heard. Ben turned around and saw Adam and Hoss laughing away.\u00a0\u201cAnd what is so hilarious to you?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Adam pointed to the map and said; \u201cit\u2019s not even real, it\u2019s just the drawing Hoss had earlier before we went fishing.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

At five forty five in the morning, the Cartwright home was filled with laughter, while one member was sound asleep.<\/em><\/p>\n
