His father was invincible. He could never die. And yet as he looked down at the imposing coffin he had tears in his eyes. The realization that Pa had joined Hoss at last caused Adam to break down. He had been there, when his father died, you know.

Ben Cartwright was dignified to the end. He had been complaining of a headache the last few days. Adam did not think much of it. It was probably just the pressure of running the ranch. Adam had so much to do what with Joe’s wedding and the cattle drive that was coming up. But finally one night, that fatal night, he let himself rest.

Joe was finally married and he lay in the bridal suite with his bride Sarah. Adam had been busy since he returned home from his jaunt in Europe. He had an idea to expand the Ponderosa ranch house. He wanted to add some more rooms. Joe had come in when he was working on one. It was a large one with a sitting room. Joe had laughed and jokingly asked Adam if it was to be the bridal suite. The name had stuck.

But this warm August night Adam was resting. It was too warm to sleep and he wondered how Joe was managing it. Adam sank wearily into the settee and propped his feet on the table. He looked over at his father, sitting at his desk. For the first time in a long while Adam really looked at his father. Ben still had the noble face and powerful figure that set him apart from all the other men Adam had ever known. His eyes were old and tired and the wrinkles on his face were becoming more and more obvious. Adam had sighed sadly. They were all getting old. What with Hoss dead and Joe married again. Adam stood up suddenly. He looked down at his hands. They were still young looking and strong. But Adam was not fooling himself. Sophie may love him still. He looked towards the stairs. Where was Sophie? She was never this late. They always spent some time together before they went to bed.

Adam smiled. Sophie had been a sort of wild girl. But she was sweet and wonderful. He had met her in the East and when he returned home she followed him not long after. They were married in a ceremony like Joe and Sarah had just enjoyed. And although Sophie never had a chance to experience the bridal suite Adam promised that after Joe and Sarah went on their wedding trip Adam would let her spend the night there with him. He smiled again when he remembered the puzzled look in her black eyes as she asked, “Darling, what about the girls?”

The girls! Adam smiled. They were his pride and joy. He had two daughters, Faith and Victoria. Faith looked like her mother at three with red hair and black eyes. Her temper was almost as bad as Uncle Joe’s. Victoria was her daddy’s girl with his brown hair and hazel eyes. She was one year old and a true angel.

Adam looked up at the stairs again. Sophie was late. He thought the girls would be easy to put to bed with the wedding. But perhaps all that cake they ate was keeping them up. Adam looked at the clock. It was eleven o’ clock. The time was a fact that Adam would always remember.

He heard a light step on the stair and turned. Sophie stood at the foot of the stairs, looking majestic in the pink dress she had worn to the wedding. Adam smiled at her and was walking towards her when out of the corner of his eye he saw his father slump over his desk. He ran over to the desk, Sophie right behind him.

Sophie had worked at a field hospital in Virginia during the war. She knew what to do. While Adam grabbed his father’s wrist and massaged it, as though hoping that would do something, Sophie lifted her father-in-laws head and felt for a pulse. Hoping against hope she unpinned the watch she wore from her pocket and held it near his mouth. She sighed and placed her hand on her husband’s shoulder. “It’s no use, Adam.” She whispered. “He’s dead.” And indeed the clear watchglass confirmed her statement.

Doc Martin, almost as old as Ben, but still an excellent doctor agreed. “It was his heart, Adam.” He told the stricken man. “Ben died painlessly. It was the best way.”

Adam looked down at the coffin again. He was the only one still near it. The ceremony was over. Sarah was leading Joe away. Joe was taking it all right. He seemed to know. “Pa had not been the same since Hoss died.” Joe had told Adam that night. “I’m glad he saw me happily married.”

Adam looked around. The undertaker was talking to Sophie. She had made all the arrangements. Dear, sweet, Sophie who always had a level head. She was so beautiful in her black mourning dress and black hat. She walked towards him, them, and placed her hand on his arm. “Adam,” she whispered.

He came away with her, then. At the edge of the cemetery he turned and looked back once more. The undertaker’s boys were lowering the coffin in the ground. “Thank you, Pa.” Adam whispered. “Thank you for everything.”

Adam Cartwright walked slowly into the large Ponderosa house. Since his father’s death he and Joe were sharing it. Joe had plans for another house, though, for himself and his bride Sarah. If only Adam could find the time to help him build it!

But Adam was tiring more and more easily. Since his father’s passing he had been managing the large spread of land. It was not easy. Adam understood now how hard it must have been for his father to oversee the Ponderosa when he was in Europe. Adam almost regretted ever leaving the Ponderosa. Only one thing kept him from regretting it and that was Sophie. Sophie was his wife of five years. She had a wild temperament like Joe’s and a sweet voice that matched his own. She could be cool and calm or high strung and spirited. And as she came slowly towards him in the black dress she had worn to the funeral Adam sensed that she was cool and calm.

“Adam?” she asked, softly. The look in his eyes told her that he was tired, very tired. He smiled at her with his lips, not his eyes, and took her in his arms.

“There is something wrong.” She drew back from him. After five years of married life she could sense when he was upset. Adam was a living memorial of his father. She could read Ben like a book, too. Adam’s face was becoming softer with age and more mature, just like his father. He no longer had wanderlust in him and he was content to remain at home with his wife and daughters. Now if the two of them could only grab some much needed intimate time!

He sighed and placed his hands gently on her hips. “I have to leave the Ponderosa tomorrow.”

“Where are you going?” she asked.

“Carson City.” He answered. “I forgot that Pa promised a herd of cattle to a man over there. I have to go with the round up tomorrow.”

After five years of married life Sophie knew better than to complain. “Tomorrow?” she asked. “How long will you be gone?” this in a quieter tone of voice as she lowered her head.

“At least three days.” He answered. “Why?”

“I was afraid of that.” She plucked at the lace hem of her sleeve.

“Why?” he repeated.

“Our anniversary is tomorrow.” She answered. “Have you forgotten about it?”

To tell the absolute truth he had. He was so tired, so overworked. His lips assured her that he had not but his eyes betrayed him. She knew better than to get angry at him, though. He had so much on his mind, so much to do since Ben had died.

“How about if we have a celebration tonight?” he asked her, trying to pacify the temper that he was sure was about to flare any moment.

“Do you have a suggestion?” she asked.

Adam’s tired body ached but he laughed. “We could send the kids to bed early, dim the lights, and play a game.”

“What kind of game?” she asked suspiciously.

“Adam smiled and ran his hand down her back. “Grown up games.” He answered.

“Oh, no you don’t.” she pulled away from him. “How about a nice dinner tonight that I don’t have to cook?”

“Why doesn’t Sarah cook?” Adam asked.

“She did.” Sophie answered.

“So let’s eat what she made.”

“Adam, I am not eating pork chops, baked beans and johnny cake for my anniversary.” She answered.

“How about a nice filet mignon and a baked potato?” he asked her.

“Are you cooking?”

“On our anniversary?” he laughed. “Don’t be silly. Get your wrap, love. We’re going to Virginia City for dinner tonight.”

“But it will be so late when we get home.” She protested slightly.

“So we’ll get a hotel room.” Adam answered reaching up to the rack where he hung his hat. His wife’s wrap was nearby. He gently hung it over her shoulders then took her arm. “I demand payment for this, you know.” He perked up.

She looked him over and laughed. “I don’t doubt it.”

“Adam,” Sophie Cartwright gently laid a hand on her husband’s shoulder, “are you going to be shy about this again?”

Adam looked up at his beautiful wife. “No, darling.” He replied. “I’m tired of everything. Why be wary?”

Sophie suddenly felt guilty. “Adam,” she whispered, “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t press you so hard about this.”

He smiled and patted her hand. “It’s not your fault, love. The time has come. I have tried everything else. Asking did nothing, begging did nothing, yelling did nothing, maybe I can appeal to his emotional side.”
“Joe, I don’t understand what you are finding so hard. I give you a simple task to do and you just sit and stare at me like I have two heads. What’s wrong with you, boy? Look up get lively!”

“Adam, I can’t help you all the time. Sarah is pregnant. She needs me more than the ranch does.”

“Joseph Cartwright, your wife will be fine. Women are born to have babies. They get used to it. Besides Sophie is here to help her.”

“This is her first child, Adam. I am not going to let your wife be around when she needs me. She cannot be alone.”

“Joe, she has six months to go! And this ranch needs you much more than Sarah does!”

“What were you like when Sophie was pregnant with Faith?”

“That was different!”

“How was it any different? Tell me that, Adam.”

“Pa was alive, then, Joe. And he had you to help him.”

“Pa was alive. Yes your world fell apart when Pa died didn’t it, Adam? You went from being Pa’s favorite and having him hold your hand to suddenly realizing that it took a lot of work to take care of a ranch.”

“I was Pa’s favorite! If anyone got their hands held around here, Little Joe, it was you. You got away with more things that Hoss and I ever could. Do you remember when you pulled a gun on Pa when you were passionately in love with that Bishop girl? Hoss and I would have gotten our behinds whipped but Pa let you get away with it!”

“Adam, I wish you wouldn’t bring up the past! Those days are over. I’m grown now. I have a wife and a child on the way.”

“If you’re grown enough to have a wife and a child then you are certainly grown enough to help out around this ranch!”

“All right! Fine! I’ll help you! Now will you please leave me alone!”

There was a worried look in Sophie’s eye. Since Ben’s death Adam had taken over the running of the ranch. He had asked Joe to help him but the youngest Cartwright was so wrapped up in himself and his pregnant wife that he often neglected doing things Adam told him to do. So Adam shouldered the burden. He and Sophie had spent their anniversary together and had hardly seen each other since. They were both tired. Then last night Joe and Adam had fought. He stood up and walked towards the door that led to Joe and Sarah’s suite of rooms.

Sophie watched him for a minute then she sank into the chair her husband had just left. There was a picture of Ben on the desk and picking it up she looked at it for a moment. “What happened?” she whispered softly. “What happened?” People used to call Hoss the glue that held the brothers together but Sophie was positive that it was actually Ben.

When Sarah answered Adam’s knock she frowned at the sight of her brother-in-law. “Adam.”

He was about to tell her she did not sound happy to see him but he bit his lip and realized that no matter what it took he had to get Joe and Sarah out of his house. “May I come in?”

“I suppose so.” Sarah replied, reluctantly opening the door to admit him. “Joe is in the bedroom. Do you want to see him?”

Adam nodded. “Yes.” He had to finish building Joe’s house and get the two of them out of there.

Adam walked through the addition of the house that he had built and lent to his brother towards the room Joe and Sarah made a bedroom. Joe lay on the large bed on his back. He turned his head as the door opened and his eyes narrowed when he saw his brother. “Well?” he demanded pulling himself up on one elbow.

“I want to talk to you.” Adam answered spreading his hands in front of him as though to ward off the invisible bullets his brother was hurling. “I will not cavil, Joe.”

“When don’t you fight with me?” Joe mused. “Well?” he asked quickly.

“Joe, I need your help.” Adam sank into a chair next to the bed. “When Pa was here I used to help him run the ranch.” He felt like he was repeating himself. It always started off like this.

“When Pa was here!” Little Joe burst out. “When Pa was here, Adam, the ranch ran smoothly and we hardly ever fought.”

“Oh, dear, God, not again!” Adam thought. He took a moment to recollect himself then calmly replied, “Pa’s not here anymore, Joe.” He could feel a hot flush spreading over his face.

“Maybe that’s part of the trouble.” Joe mused cooling down slightly when he saw the blood rush to Adam’s face turning his normal tanned face into a scarlet.

“I’m graveled.” Adam shook his head and swallowed his pride. “I need help. I don’t want a foreman, Joe, I want a co owner. And that’s what you are. Pa did not leave the Ponderosa to me, Joe. He left it to us and to our children. Let’s take care of our heritage together, brother. What do you say?”

Joe was silent as he processed Adam’s appeal. Then he nodded. “All right, Adam, I will. Send Sarah in here will you?”

Adam nodded and rose from his chair. It was over. Either Joe would understand and help or he would forget and continue with the way it had been going. But as Adam walked towards the door he turned back to his brother and smiled, “Thank you, Joe.”

When he entered the main house Sophie crossed the room to stand at his side. “Adam?” she asked her eyes pleading. He looked so old, so tired.

Adam shook his head. “I’m afraid it was palaver, Sophie.” He answered. “He promised to help but how long do his promises last?” Adam sank onto the settee and Sophie sat beside him. “Adam,” she whispered, “if Little Joe does not help what will you do?”

Adam frowned. “I need help, Sophie. I guess I’ll have to hire a foreman. The question is who?”

Sophie was silent for a moment. Then she laid her hand gently on her husband’s arm. “Adam, when you were in Europe there was a foreman that worked for your father. He left before you returned.”

Adam turned to look at his wife. “How do you know this?”

“One of the girl’s in town told me.” She replied. “Why don’t you think of rehiring him? If your Pa trusted him, can’t you too?”

Adam nodded. “I guess.” He replied. “What was his name?”

“Candy.” Sophie replied. “Candy Canaday.”

“We’ll see.” Adam would promise nothing. “I want to give Joe a chance. But I’ll think about it.”

Neither Adam nor Sophie noticed the door to Joe and Sarah’s room close silently.

“Hey, Sarah!” Minnie Anderson called as Sarah left the millinery shop. “Why didn’t you tell us Candy was coming back?”

Sarah Cartwright turned pale. “He isn’t.” she replied nervously. “He left before Adam came home. My husband and Adam run the ranch now.”

Minnie smiled. “I saw Candy at the station earlier.” She answered. “Adam and Sophie met him there. I bet they will be back at the Ponderosa before you.”

“So that’s why Adam and Sophie and gone into town.” Sarah thought angrily. To get Candy and drop her husband. She had heard the conversation between her brother-in-law and his wife. There was going to be trouble afoot when Joe found out. “It’s obloquy.” Sarah insisted angrily. “A malicious story made up by people who are jealous of the Cartwright’s.”

Minnie laughed. “I bet not.” She answered. “But when you come back into town let the old crowd know. There are several of us that are still single.” She winked at Sarah, turned and walked away.

As Sarah got into the wagon she started to wonder if Candy really was back. Or was it all gossip like she hoped? But most importantly if Candy was back what would happen to Joe and to her?

Adam Cartwright had only one thing to say to Leo Hodge the station manager of Virginia City. “Has the train from Fort Delaney arrived?”

Leo shook his head. “No, sir, Mr. Cartwright.” He answered, switching his Southern cigar from his right side of his mouth to his left. “Say, Mr. Cartwright, is it true that you’re gettin’ Candy Canaday to come help out on the ranch again.”

Adam nodded. “Yes, that’s right why?”

“Well, we all just never thought you would need help running the Ponderosa.” Leo replied. “Around here we all hold you in the same regard as your father. We all consider you to be a leading man of our community. You are so…so superlative.” Leo smiled proud at finally being able to use a big word. He did try to “better himself” even if he did not finish grammer school.

Adam smiled. There was two ways to take that. But since the rest of the speech was so complimentary Adam took the last part to be a compliment as well. “Thanks, Leo.” He answered. “You know Candy, don’t you? Will you point him out to me when he appears?”

“Sure I will, Mr. Cartwright.” Leo answered.

“Well?” Sophie Cartwright asked as her husband as he climbed back in the wagon.

“Not yet.” Adam answered looking around. Sarah had come into town earlier. “I feel like a criminal.” He admitted. “I’m looking behind shadows for Sarah and Joe.”

“It’s your ranch, isn’t it?” Sophie asked.

“It’s our ranch.” Adam corrected his wife. “Joe and mine. We have to run it together.”

“You saw how well that worked.” Sophie gently reminded her husband.

“I know. I know.” he answered. Then he sat in silence for several moments.

“There’s the train.” Sophie suddenly announced and Adam leaped down from the wagon. He held a hand out for his wife who jumped gracefully down to stand at his side. “Which one is Candy do you think?” she asked.

“You seem to know more about the young man then I do.” Adam answered. “You tell me.”

Sophie made a face at her husband. “Just for that I will.” She walked towards the platform.

There were three men that got off the train. All three stood awarkdly on the platform looking around. But Sophie picked out one dark haired man with a big smile and a red bandanna tied around his neck. She approached the man, her husband right next to her. “Candy Canaday?” she asked.

The man looked at her and smiled. “That’s right, Miss, and you are…?”

“She’s Sophie Cartwright and I am Adam.” Adam cut in amazed at his wife’s ability to tell which man it was.

“Adam Cartwright.” The man smiled. “I have heard many good things about you. I was actually at Fort Delaney looking into getting a job and settling down with Ann. She’s a widow now you know and her father is dead, too, so nothing stands in our way now.” Then he laughed. “Not that you want to hear about my troubles. I was glad to get your letter, Mr. Cartwright.” He smiled his radiant smile. “I was getting bored at the fort and Ann won’t leave until I get a good job and can promise her a good home.”

Adam laughed and held out his hand. “Well, Mr. Canaday, you have a good home with us.”

Sophie smiled and looked at her husband. “Let’s be informal.” She said. “I am Sophie, he is Candy, and you are Adam.”

“Adam was dubious.

“If you’re worried about respect, don’t.” Candy reassured Adam. “My dad was in the army. I know all about respect.” This was said with a cynical frown.

Adam laughed. “All right. Candy it is. Now come on. The ranch house has changed some since you left. But you can have any room you want.”

“Well, actually, Mr. Cartw..er Adam, if you don’t mind I’d like the foreman’s house.”

“Well, sure you can have it if you want it.” Adam answered suprised. “it needs alot of work.”

“I know, sir. I’ll fix it in my spare time.” Candy assured him.

“Then its yours.”

“Thank you, Adam.”

“I still don’t see why you want it.” Adam frowned.

“It’s Ann.” Candy answered. “She promised that if I kept this job for six weeks she would marry me. I have not been doing much since I left here.”

Adam smiled and grabed Candy’s bag. “Our wagon is this way.” He said. “Let’s go back to the Ponderosa.”

It was nightfall by the time they returned home. Adam and Sophie sat in the back of the wagon while Candy drove. He had insisted on it. “See that constellation up there?” Candy called back as he turned into the drive of the ranch.

Adam and Sophie looked up. “The Big Dipper.” He whispered to his wife.

“It’s the Big Dipper.” Candy announced. “I used to lie in my bed at the fort and look at it. It was so lovely.”

“I bet you made promises to your girl under those stars.” Sophie, ever the sentemelist smiled.

“Sure I did.” Candy drew the horses up in front of the house. “And every single one was broke.”

“It’s not too late.” Sophie smiled as her husband jumped down off the wagon.

“I know that.” Candy smiled gaily. “Look here.” He reached into his pocket and pulled out a piece of rock. “See this, Missus Cartwright.”

“Sophie.” She answered. “What is it?”

“It’s a part of a meteor that fell from the sky and hit the area not far from the fort. I took part and Ann took part. It was a promise rock. We made promises on it.”

Sophie smiled. “How sweet.”

Adam looked over at Candy as he jumped down from the wagon and offered his hand to Sophie. “Not too sweet, I hope.” He murmured under his breathe.

“What, darling?” Sophie turned from Candy to her husband.

“Nothing, Sophie.” Adam replied. “Coming in, Candy?”

And as Candy nodded and offered his arm to Sophie, Adam started wondering if asking Candy to come down and help out was such a good idea.

“You promised you would give me a chance.” Joe Cartwright faced his brother Adam angrily, his hands resting defiantly on his hips.

Adam swallowed hard before replying. He had to think about what he was going to say before he said anything that he would regret. “I gave you your chance.” He finally answered. “But you paid me no heed.”

The two brothers glared at each other. Adam knew that there would be a conflict when he brought Candy back to the ranch. His conscience had told him that it was a bad idea but he had no choice. How many times had he given Little Joe a chance? And how many times had Joe repented only to break his resolution within a matter of days? Adam shook his head. He had run out of patience. That was why he had taken his wife’s advice and hired Candy. Candy Canaday knew Little Joe almost better that Adam. Candy was the one there when Joe’s first wife Alice died. Candy had been there to help Joe transition back into life as a bachelor. Candy had been there when Hoss died. Candy had been there to help Joe and Pa prepare the memorial services for Hoss and Alice. Yes, Joe liked Candy. Adam hoped his entrance back into life on the Ponderosa would heal some of the breach between the remaining Cartwright brothers. They were capable of so many things together. Oh, if only Hoss had not passed away, Adam thought watching Joe sadly as the latter stormed out of the room. He was the healing glue that kept the family together. With a him gone Hoe and Adam were like a cannon that had been ignited and was about to explode. Their only hope was that Candy could extinguish the cannon before it exploded and caused pain that could never be healed.

Adam,” Sophie Cartwright leant over her husband that night and gently whispered in his ear, “what’s wrong?”

Adam rolled over in the bed so that he faced his wife. “Joe and I had another fight today.” He answered. “I just don’t know what to do with him.”

Sophie leant back on the pillow and sighed. Adam, though stalwart and noble to a fault, had his hands full with his younger brother. “I thought Joe would be happy that Candy had come back.” She murmured.

“Joe thinks I betrayed him.” Adam replied.

“Well, what do you do now?” Sophie asked. “You and Joe are capable of such great possibilities together.”

“I know.” Adam nodded. “I know.”

Sophie shook her head and laid her hand on her husband’s arm. “Give him time, Adam. Perhaps he will come to understand how important it is that Candy be here. The ranch is very big. You and Joe share equal ownership in it. But you have no foreman. With Candy here you can spend more time with your family.”

Adam shook his head. “I still have to go on the roundup with the men.” He replied. Then he stopped and looked at his wife. “Do you think that I do not spend enough time with my family?” he asked.

Sophie smiled in the dark of the room. “Let’s just say you could spend more time with the girls. Faith told me last night that she had a dream that you stayed home one Saturday and played with her.”

Adam shook his head. “Running a ranch is not easy work.” He answered.

“But Candy is here now. He can take over some of the work.” Sophie replied.

Adam smiled.

“Adam, promise me something.”

“Anything you want, love.”

“Promise me that you will spend at least one day with your family. One day a month.”

Adam smiled and took his wife’s hand. “Anything you want, Sophie. Come here, darling.”

“Mrs. Cartwright, these are the best biscuits I ever tasted.” Candy smiled at Sarah Cartwright.

Sarah laughed. “It’s Sophie’s recipe.” She answered. “She just has not been feeling well lately so I promised to make the biscuits for dinner.”

“Did you say Sophie was not feeling well?” Adam asked entering the kitchen a look of consternation on his face.

“She has been sick for at least three days.” Sarah answered. “Haven’t you noticed, Adam?”

Adam shook his head, hating himself for not paying attention to his wife. Ever since they had their talk three weeks ago he had been busy reacclimating Candy to the Ponderosa. Candy had taken over a lions share of the work and even Joe was doing more than he ever did. Adam was surprised. But Joe told him that since Sarah was no longer experiencing sickness with her pregnancy he felt more comfortable leaving her. “Until she gets closer to her due date.” Adam had moaned to Sophie. “Then he’ll be with her all the time.”

Sophie had laughed. “Just like you have been, love.” She reminded him.

Had she been sick lately, Adam wondered. She was always so sparkling and full of life. Sarah must be mistaken. Still Adam decided that he had better check on his wife.

He took the steps up to their room three at a time. “Sophie,” he knocked gently before entering.

She was standing in front of the mirror, looking radiant in a dress of green. “Come in, Adam.” She smiled.

“Are you all right?” Adam asked concerned. “Sarah told me you have been sick.”

Sophie smiled. “It’s nothing I don’t know how to take care of.” She answered walking to her husbands side and taking his hand. “How are you?”

“Good.” He answered. “I thought that I would make this Saturday that one day a month I promised to spend with my family. What do you say, Sophie, how about taking the family down to the river for a picnic?”

“Adam, that’s a wonderful idea.” She smiled. “I’m so glad you decided to do this.”

Adam leant his face closer to her and kissed his wife. “I always try to take you advise.” He laughed.

She smiled. “Adam, when we are on the picnic I have to tell the girls some joyful news.”

“What kind of news?” he asked.

“Why I’ve been so sick.” Sophie replied.

“Tell me why.” Adam slipped his arm down his wife’s back.

“Faith and Victoria are going to have a little brother or a little sister by next year.” Sophie answered.

“You…you’re pregnant.” Adam asked and she nodded happily. “Darling, that’s wonderful!” Adam swept her up in his arms and twirled her around the room. “It’s a wonderful day!” he sang.

Sophie smiled. It was indeed a wonderful day. For once the family was working together. She hoped this moment could last forever.

To Sarah Cartwright it was bad enough that her brother-in-law had given Joe less responsibility. But to hire Candy Canaday was almost saying that he needed Candy more than he needed Joe. And to Sarah that was an unforgivable sin.

Adam Cartwright knew that Sarah resented his actions. Although Joe seemed happier and more willing to help since Candy had arrived, Sarah hated Candy more and more. Nothing Candy did was good enough for Sarah. When Candy offered to bring more wood for the stove the night that Sarah cooked she grudingly accepted. But when he arrived with the wood she was furious.

“How stupid can you be?” she demanded. “This is pine wood for the living room. I wanted wood for the stove.”

It was then that Adam interfered. “We keep the oak wood for the stove in a different place.” He steered his friend towards the door. “I’ll show you where it is.”

Candy wrinkled his nose as the kitchen door closed behind the two men. “Adam,” he asked cautiously, “I’m sure this is oak.”

Adam nodded. “It is oak.”

Neither man said another word.

Sophie Cartwright stood in the doorway of the Ponderosa ranch watching her husband and Joe ride into the yard. Her pretty brow furrowed into a frown as she watched Candy come out of the barn. Despite Adam’s insistence that it was not his job, he was always willing to take their horses. Next to Sophie, Sarah Cartwright sat on the porch, her pretty blue eyes shooting ice at the handsome foreman.

Sophie knew how Sarah felt about Candy. She wanted to remind her friend that it was all for the best. It was so Joe could spend more time with her. But then she remembered…Joe and Sarah had started to drift apart. While Adam waved to her and blew her a kiss, Joe talked with Candy.

‘Everything is all right with my marriage.’ Sophie thought placing a hand on her stomach. ‘But what about Joe and Sarah?’ Had her suggestion to bring Candy here placed a stake in her brother-in-law’s marriage?

Candy turned and waved to the ladies on the porch and Sophie smiled and waved back. Sarah turned her face back to her knitting. Sophie sighed.

The three men were walking towards the house now. Somewhere in the distance Sophie heard a wolf howl. ‘Funny,’ she thought, ‘is it possible that I invited a wolf into our home?’

“There are some day I think Adam is a raging lunatic.” Sophie Cartwright said to no one in particular as she stared out the front window at her husband.

The Cartwright man was attempting to break one of the wild horses he and Joe had brought back from the canyon. Joe was working better with Adam and Candy. Sophie still often saw her Sarah cast resentful glances at Candy but all-in-all the Ponderosa and its inhabitants had settled down for a somewhat peaceful existence. Oh there were intervals of anger and outright fights. But for the most part life was quiet.

Sophie felt the life growing within her move more every day now. Meanwhile Sarah had to more careful as the day drew nearer to when her own baby came into the world. Sophie watched over her friend carefully as she knew what could happen. But she was sure the baby would be born healthy and strong.

“You know what I am pining for?” a voice behind Sophie caused her to jump and she turned to look at Sarah.

“What?” Sophie asked with a smile, fully understanding pregnancy cravings.

“That drink my Pa used to make.” Sarah answered. “What did he call it? Oh, moonshine!”

Sophie started laughing. “You can’t drink that stuff, Sarah, not with the baby.”

Sarah smiled. “I know. I was just thinking about it.”

The two women were interrupted by the sound of a female’s voice outside and a horse being stooped in front of the ranch house. Sophie looked back out the window. A strange woman was leaping gracefully off the horse’s back. Her short brown hair was almost hidden by the straw hat hiding her features. Her riding habit was dark green and her gloves were black. She had a look of self-confidence as she walked lightly up the steps and knocked on the door.

When Sophie answered the door the woman had removed her hat. What the Cartwright woman saw was a woman of about 22 or 23 with a beautiful face and a familiar smile. “Yes?” Sophie asked pleasantly trying to remember where she had seen the smile before.

“Does Sarah Cartwright live here?” the woman asked.

Sophie nodded. “Who is calling?” she asked as she admitted the girl.

The stranger smiled. “My name is Catherine Thomas.” She replied. “I am Sarah’s older sister.”

Sarah just coming into the living room heard the name and saw the girl. “Cathy!” she exclaimed running to the stranger.

For a minute the two hugged each other. Then Sarah smiled at Sophie. “My brother-in-law-s wife.” She told her sister. “Cathy, this is Sophie.”

“Nice to meet you, Mrs. Cartwright.” Catherine said.

“Sophie.” She answered. “Catherine.”

The girl smiled.

“How was your trip?” Sarah asked eagerly. “Come on over to the settee and tell me all about it. What happened in Europe? Did you learn much? How about that young man? Did you marry him?”

Catherine laughed and let her sister lead her over to the settee. Seated between the two Cartwright women Sophie learned more about this older sister of Sarah’s that she never knew about.

“After Pa sent me back East for my secondary education he decided I needed more.” Catherine explained as much to Sarah as to Sophie. “So he sent me to Europe. It was great, Sarah, but it was not Virginia City.” Sarah smiled. “I got pretty bored after awhile. Especially with everything I had to learn. And parties, there were parties every night. I started to get tired of it. But then at one party I met him…Charles Swanson. He was young, handsome with a winning smile and dashing ways. We started going together and he even asked me to marry him. Pa was so pleased and he urged me to go through with it. I did not marry him Sarah because I could not marry a man I did not love. I don’t care how many estates he owned or how many vineyards he oversaw. Pa was furious, of course, but there was nothing he could do. Now I’m back in Virginia City and I’m here to stay. I’m going to play with your baby, be a socialite of society.”

Sophie and Sarah smiled at her. “You’re welcome to stop by anytime, Catherine.” Sophie told the girl immediately welcoming her as a friend. “There is never a need to knock.”

Catherine smiled gratefully and stood up. “Thank you.” She replied. “But I must be going now. Thank you so much. I wanted to see Sarah.”

“Will you be back tomorrow?” Sarah asked a wistful look on her face.

Catherine nodded. “Of course I will, Sarah. Bye.”

“Bye.” Sophie and Sarah waved.

“She’s a nice girl.” Sophie closed the door.

“She’s my sister.” Sarah replied. No further explanation was needed.

The whole Cartwright house was in a frenzy. But then, as Sophie put in, when weren’t they? There were so many preparations to be made for the arrival of the baby. Joe was pacing the hallway, his face pale and drawn. Adam sat lazily on the sofa, a cigarette in his lips, laughing at his younger brother’s first-time father jitters.

Occasionally a cry could be heard from the bedroom. Joe would run to the door and try to open it. But Sophie or Catherine or Doc Martin would stick their heads out and tell him that everything was all right. Adam laughed and wondered if he was this bad when Sophie had their oldest. He’d have to ask Doc Martin sometime.

No one expected the baby to come this soon. Maybe that was the cause of Joe’s anxiety. Easter was coming up and Sarah had been sitting in the living room with Sophie and her sister Catherine when the pangs started. The ladies were making Easter baskets for the children of Virginia City. The baskets were to have silly little things in it that kids love, like stuffed hares and chocolate candy. Joe and Adam sat in the dining area reading the latest news article from the city and laughing at the women’s foolish gossip. Since Catherine was free and lived in the city she often brought gossip out to the Ponderosa. Adam had to smile at that. She was like the Ponderosa’s gossip column. Not that he minded.

What she brought was enough to keep Sophie and Sarah happy until her next visit. Sophie, although a nurse during the war, had very little experience with birthing babies. Except for the times she had given birth she really had never assisted before. Adam remembered the look of panic in Sarah’s eyes as the pangs ripped through her body. He remembered how she had started to breathe faster…much too fast to his way of thinking. Sophie was out heating water before they helped Sarah to the bed. Joe had walked over to his wife, his arm around her trying to help her. But her rapid breathing was interfering with everything. It was then that Catherine Thomas leapt into action. She had brought a paper bag* with some food for her sister when she came to the ranch earlier that day. She reached for it and thrust it in her sister hands. “Breathe into the bag.” She ordered Sarah. “Take some deep breathes and look at me.”

Her commanding tone caused Sarah to do just that. “You’re going to be all right.” Catherine assured her sister gently. “Breathe with me, Sarah. That’s it. Everything is going to be fine.” As Sarah’s breathing became more natural, Catherine removed the bag from her sister’s face and took her arm, gently helping her off the sofa. “Let’s go to your room.” Her voice soothing and quiet. “You’ll be more comfortable there.” Sarah nodded and started to follow her sister. Joe leapt to pick up his wife but Sophie, watching from the eating area shook her head at him. The last thing they needed was Joe hurting himself or his wife in his anxiety.

Adam snapped back to reality as Joe stopped next to him. “How long do these things take?” he groaned.

Adam puffed on his cigarette. “Hours.” He replied honestly. “My gosh, Joe, settle down. Women have babies all the time. They get used to it.”
“Maybe.” Joe answered. “But anything could happen. I guess I’m just nervous.”

Adam smiled. “As well you should be.” He answered. “When Sophie had Faith I was crazy with worry. “Doc Martin will tell you how I spent the whole time at the bedroom door like some guard watching over everything that went on.”

Joe smiled at the scene of his usually clam older brother going crazy with worry. Then the bedroom door opened and Catherine appeared. “Joe.” She said softly.

Joe leapt forward. “What is it?” he asked, panic in his face.

She smiled and opened the door wider. Adam standing just outside the door smiled at his wife and took her in his arms. “Well?” he asked.

She smiled. “It went well. She is so happy.”

Adam laid a hand on his wife’s swollen belly. “I am, too.” He smiled.

Sophie looked over at Catherine. “Thank you for your help with Sarah. I don’t know what I would have done if you had not been here.”
She laughed. “Done it yourself, of course.” She answered, slipping into her red traveling cloak. “I’ll leave you alone.” She smiled. “I have a party to plan.”

“A party?” Sophie asked. “You mean, the Easter party?”

“No.” Catherine turned back. “A party to welcome my nephew.” Then she turned and was gone.

Sophie and Adam standing at the door watched the vivacious lady ride away.
