{"id":560,"date":"2003-05-17T22:33:32","date_gmt":"2003-05-18T02:33:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bonanzabrand.info\/library\/?p=560"},"modified":"2025-02-27T12:07:57","modified_gmt":"2025-02-27T17:07:57","slug":"caseys-side","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bonanzabrand.info\/library\/?p=560","title":{"rendered":"Casey&#8217;s Side (by Karen)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span class=\"label\" style=\"color: #000000;\">Summary: \u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Another person&#8217;s view of a scene from Credit For A Kill.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span class=\"label\" style=\"color: #000000;\">Rated:<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0T (2,930 words)<\/span><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Casey&#8217;s Side<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>It\u2019s gettin\u2019 so a fella can\u2019t even have a good time<\/strong> in the saloon anymore, what with uppity saloon gals and out-of-town gunslingers hanging around.\u00a0 I complained to the sheriff, but of course Fenton didn\u2019t do a dadblame thing about it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">I told him I was just sittin\u2019 there minding my own business, playing a hand of cards with the boys.\u00a0 That piano player was banging out some kind of tune.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know what it was, how\u2019s a man supposed to pay attention to a thing like that when she looked so fine doing it?\u00a0 I figured she was gettin\u2019 a little lonesome and was about to mosey on over to talk to her when the stranger walked in.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Did I say walked?\u00a0 Might as well have said strutted.\u00a0 He strolled through the saloon like he owned it.\u00a0 You could tell he thought highly of himself just in the way he walked.\u00a0 His green jacket fit just so and his gun riding low.\u00a0 All those gunslingers wear their guns low.\u00a0 That\u2019s how you can tell what they are.\u00a0 But he didn\u2019t scare me.\u00a0 Course not.\u00a0 I ain\u2019t no baby hangin\u2019 on his momma\u2019s arm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">I watched him plunk down at a table right next to Lorna.\u00a0 Saw him smile and nod at her too, just like they was old friends.\u00a0 Made me start a slow burn, because I\u2019d been trying to get to know her ever since she arrived in town.\u00a0 She wouldn\u2019t give me the time of day, let alone a smile like the one she gave him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">It was just too much for a man to take.\u00a0 I tossed in my hand and strolled over to let that stranger know just whose woman he was eyeing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">I leaned on the piano and gave Lorna my best smile, ignoring the gunslinger as best I could.\u00a0 \u201cWant company, sweetheart?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">She decided to play hard to get.\u00a0 She does that.\u00a0 I guess she thinks it makes a man want her all the more.\u00a0 Maybe she\u2019s right.\u00a0 Sure works on me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cNot that I know of.\u201d\u00a0 She looked past me and favored the fella in the green jacket with a smile.\u00a0 \u201cFavorite number for you, stranger?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The burning in my gut got a little hotter.\u00a0 She\u2019d never smiled at me like that.\u00a0 And who did she think she was, ignoring me that way?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The stranger grinned. He was probably used to saloon gals throwing themselves at him. He was kind of a pretty little fella.\u00a0 \u201cWhatever you play is fine with me, Ma\u2019am,\u201d he said, with a wink and a wave of his hand.\u00a0 Then he rocked back in his chair, all ready to enjoy the music, I guess.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Well, I wasn\u2019t gonna let some gunslinger waltz into town and steal the girl I\u2019d been huntin\u2019 for the past few weeks.\u00a0 I slid onto the bench next to her and snagged her tiny waist with one arm.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019ve got a favorite number,\u201d I said.\u00a0 \u201cYou.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">I tried to plant a kiss on her neck, but she pushed me away.\u00a0 The ice in her eyes could have given me frostbite if I\u2019d let it.\u00a0 Her voice was even colder.\u00a0 \u201cWhen my neck needs washing, Mr. Rawlins, I\u2019ll do it myself.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cYou an iceberg, girlie?\u201d\u00a0 I tried to kiss her again.\u00a0 She just needed a little warming up, that\u2019s all.\u00a0 I knew she\u2019d come around when I gave her a full dose of the Casey Rawlins charm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">She shoved at me again, obviously putting on a show for the cowboy.\u00a0 \u201cWill ya leave me alone?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">If I didn\u2019t know better, I\u2019d have thought she didn\u2019t like me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">I grinned.\u00a0 \u201cDon\u2019t play \u2018holier-than-thou\u2019 with me, lady,\u201d I advised her.\u00a0 I figured it wouldn\u2019t hurt to remind her of her place.\u00a0 \u201cThis is a saloon, and you\u2019re here to entertain.\u201d\u00a0 I wrestled with her some more.\u00a0 This was starting to be fun.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">She tried to push me away, and her voice was cold.\u00a0 Reminded me of one of my old schoolmarms.\u00a0 \u201cMr. Rawlins, my kind of entertainment is supposed to be cultural, not physical,\u201d she hissed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">She sure was good at the game.\u00a0 I knew she was just playing hard to get.\u00a0 I showed her I knew she was just funnin\u2019 by turning to the keyboard.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cSomebody once said \u2018if you can\u2019t whip \u2018em, join \u2018em\u2019.\u201d\u00a0 I plunked out a tune with one finger.\u00a0 This gal could really heat a man\u2019s blood with her prim and proper act.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cHey, mister.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">I heard his voice and ignored him.\u00a0 With that type of fella, you don\u2019t want to let \u2018em see they got you rattled.\u00a0 I kept on playin\u2019 the piano like he wasn\u2019t there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cHey, you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">I finally looked up and stared at him like I\u2019d just noticed him for the first time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cGo finish your drink.\u00a0 I want to hear the music.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">His voice was low, almost a drawl like he was trying to keep the rest of the fellas from hearing.\u00a0 Maybe he wasn\u2019t as tough as he was trying to look if he didn\u2019t want anyone to hear what he had to say.\u00a0 I was tired of his interference.\u00a0 Lorna had me in a sweat and I aimed to have me some fun.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cGet lost little boy,\u201d I said, and then I tried to kiss her again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">A chair scraped and next thing I know the coldest pair of green eyes I\u2019d seen were staring down at me.\u00a0 \u201cThe \u2018little boy\u2019 wants to hear the music,\u201d he said.\u00a0 And just stood there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Well that did it.\u00a0 This fly had to be swatted. \u00a0I stood up and threw a punch at him.\u00a0 He was a little fella for all that he acted so tough.\u00a0 I knew I could take him.\u00a0 He drew back his left arm and let fly a punch that sent me flying over a table.\u00a0 I couldn\u2019t believe it.\u00a0 How could a man that small have it in \u2018im?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">I scrambled to my feet, expecting him to come at me, but he just stood there, ready for anything.\u00a0 I hesitated.\u00a0 After all, I didn\u2019t know who this fella was.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t want to hurt him too badly if he had kin who\u2019d come looking for revenge.\u00a0 Deciding to let him be, I turned and left the saloon.\u00a0 It was the right thing to do\u2014for his sake.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">++++++++++++<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">I walked up and down the sidewalk for a few minutes, trying to cool off.\u00a0 That gunslinger didn\u2019t know how lucky he was I\u2019d decided not to take him apart.\u00a0 The fool didn\u2019t know who he was dealing with.\u00a0 Casey Rawlins was one tough customer.\u00a0 I had to back off.\u00a0 It was the only thing to do.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">It was while I was mulling this over that I noticed folks all clustered around in little knots, talking, pointing, and nodding their heads.\u00a0 Something was up, and I wanted to know what.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">It didn\u2019t take me long to find out, and what I heard really made my blood boil.\u00a0 That fella I\u2019d been so kind too was a killer.\u00a0 A cold-blooded, bounty-huntin\u2019 killer.\u00a0 Turns out his name was Cartwright.\u00a0 Joe Cartwright.\u00a0 And he\u2019d brought a body in to Sheriff Fenton.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Sure, Morgan Tanner was with him, but everyone knew it was Cartwright who\u2019d done the killin\u2019.\u00a0 Tanner\u2019s right arm was useless after he\u2019d broken it last spring.\u00a0 No way he coulda shot at anybody and hit \u2018em.\u00a0 It didn\u2019t come as any surprise to me to find out the fella they\u2019d brought in had a bounty on his head too.\u00a0 Two thousand dollars.\u00a0 I whistled.\u00a0 A man didn\u2019t often see that kind of money altogether in one place.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">This being Nevada we\u2019d all heard the name Cartwright.\u00a0 It\u2019d be kinda hard not to know of the family that owned most of the land in the territory. Seemed a little odd that one of the high-and-mighty Cartwright\u2019s would need to stoop to bounty hunting.\u00a0 But what did I know?\u00a0 Could be the kid had had a fallin\u2019 out with his old man and needed the cash.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">I smiled a bit.\u00a0 Lorna Medford sure wouldn\u2019t want to keep company with a man who killed for money.\u00a0 I strolled back to the saloon whistling.\u00a0 Time to take Cartwright down a peg or two.\u00a0 I\u2019d have Lorna eating out of my hand in no time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">I pushed through the swinging doors and saw Cartwright sitting at a table with Lorna.\u00a0 Their heads were together and it looked like they were having a pretty serious conversation.\u00a0 It rankled me she\u2019d give him so much attention when all I got from her was a cold look and an unkind word.\u00a0 Well, she\u2019d soon be changing her tune.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">I tossed Cartwright a glare and then ambled over to lean on the bar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cHey girlie,\u201d I called out, loud enough so\u2019s everyone could hear.\u00a0 \u201cYou might like to know that whatever *<em>Mister*<\/em>\u00a0Cartwright buys ya has been paid for by a dead man.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Lorna looked up at me, her whole face one big question.\u00a0 \u201cWhat\u2019s that supposed to mean?\u201d she asked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">I grinned.\u00a0 \u201cWhole town\u2019s talking about it.\u00a0 There was a reward on that dead man.\u00a0 And I\u2019m betting Cartwright and his friend Morgan killed him for money.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">I straightened up and glared at the gunslinger, but Cartwright kept his back to me and took a sip of his drink.\u00a0 \u201cYou shoot him in the back, Cartwright?\u00a0 Take him by surprise?\u00a0 I know all about you.\u00a0 Want to hear it?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">I flicked a look at Lorna to see how she was taking all this and then turned back to Cartwright.\u00a0 He still didn\u2019t look at me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cYou got the floor, mister.\u00a0 Keep talking.\u201d\u00a0 Cartwright\u2019s voice was flat, colder\u2019n ice in winter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">I could see Lorna\u2019s face had gotten white, but she was paying more attention to me than she\u2019d done since she got to town.\u00a0 I turned so\u2019s the fellas could all hear.\u00a0 \u201cHe\u2019s a rich kid, run out of money.\u00a0 So he turned bounty hunter.\u201d\u00a0 I swung back to face Cartwright.\u00a0 \u201cWhat\u2019s a matter, rich kid?\u00a0 Didn\u2019t you get your lollipop allowance this week?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">I rocked back on my heels and waited, knowing I was pushing him and waiting to see what happened. I\u2019d have that boy scampering out of town quicker\u2019n he could spit.\u00a0 He didn\u2019t know who he was dealing with when he took on Casey Rawlins.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">He sat still.\u00a0 Didn\u2019t even look at me for all I was daring him too.\u00a0 \u201cDon\u2019t push it too far, mister.\u201d\u00a0 He took another sip of his drink, but I could tell he\u2019d tensed up.\u00a0 I was getting to him, that\u2019s for sure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Making sure the boys could see me, I tossed Cartwright my best glare and put a sneer in my voice.\u00a0 \u201cI don\u2019t have a price on my head, mister.\u00a0 I\u2019m not worth two thousand dollars, dead or alive.\u00a0 If you\u2019re good enough to shoot me you might find some small change in my pocket.\u201d\u00a0 I fished around in my vest and found what I was looking for.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">I strolled across the room, jingling some coins so\u2019s everyone knew what I had.\u00a0 I tossed \u2018em down on the table beside him.\u00a0 \u201cHere.\u00a0 I\u2019ll save ya the trouble.\u201d\u00a0 And then I strolled back to the bar to see what he\u2019d do.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">I figured he\u2019d slink out of the saloon then.\u00a0 He\u2019d just sat there, takin\u2019 everything I said.\u00a0 He wasn\u2019t denying a thing.\u00a0 He wasn\u2019t so tough when he wasn\u2019t taking a victim by surprise, was he?\u00a0 I hooked my thumbs into my pockets and grinned at the boys.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Cartwright stood up.\u00a0 I tensed, waiting for him to go for his gun, or fly at me swinging his fists.\u00a0 Everyone in the saloon held their breath.\u00a0 I felt a bead of sweat roll down my neck, and my hand hovered by my gun.\u00a0 I could take him.\u00a0 He was just a snot-nosed rich kid playing bounty hunter, I told myself.\u00a0 But my stomach rolled and it felt like a fist had squeezed my windpipe, cause I couldn\u2019t breathe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Cartwright set down his drink, moving slow.\u00a0 He picked up the coins and looked at \u2018em.\u00a0 Just stood there, like he was countin\u2019 \u2018em.\u00a0 When he swung toward me, I jumped, thinking he was going to pull his gun.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">But he didn\u2019t.\u00a0 He walked toward me.\u00a0 I stood my ground, daring him to do something.\u00a0 Casey Rawlins ain\u2019t no scared kid.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">But he didn\u2019t pull his gun.\u00a0 He paced to the bar and tossed my money down.\u00a0 The coins clinked on the counter, and the echo rippled up and down my spine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Cartwright\u2019s voice, although pitched low, cut through the silence.\u00a0 \u201cGive me a couple of beers.\u00a0 My friend\u2019s buying.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">I gaped at him as the barman scuttled off.\u00a0 What was he getting at?\u00a0 Why didn\u2019t he just pull his gun or throw a punch and fight like a man?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Jed was back with the beers, setting them both in front of Cartwright.\u00a0 You could have heard a pin drop in the saloon as every pair of eyes watched his every move.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Cartwright let the silence grow until it pounded in my ears.\u00a0 When he finally spoke it was in that same flat tone.\u00a0 \u201cYou know, loud mouth, they say if a man could second guess his mistakes he\u2019d never die by accident.\u201d\u00a0 His voice grew a little louder.\u00a0 \u201cWell, I\u2019m going to give you a chance to learn that lesson.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">I flushed, a surging swell of warmth starting at my toes and flooding through my body as my rage battled with an icy dread which seemed to have taken hold in the pit of my stomach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Cartwright sent one of the beers sliding down the bar.\u00a0 Instinctively I reached out to catch it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cLeave that stand there,\u201d he ordered.\u00a0 \u201cThat\u2019s a very important beer glass.\u00a0 That beer glass is you.\u201d\u00a0 He nodded down at the other glass.\u00a0 \u201cThis one\u2019s me.\u00a0 Now, see, the idea is to see if you can spill my beer before I spill yours.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">I stared at him, completely confused.\u00a0 What kind of game was he playing?\u00a0 Didn\u2019t he know I\u2019d just called him names no decent man would accept?\u00a0 Didn\u2019t he know his fists should be flying to wipe out the stain on his honor?\u00a0 The man was a fool prattling on about beer glasses.\u00a0 The ice in my belly spread, quelling my rage, and it was all I could do to stop my hand from shaking.\u00a0 What kind of animal had I set loose?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Cartwright pulled himself up straight and moved slightly away from the bar.\u00a0 His eyes never left mine as he stood, his hand almost casually hovering near his gun.\u00a0 \u201cAny time you\u2019re ready, loud mouth.\u201d\u00a0 His voice held the sneer I\u2019d been waiting for.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">I hesitated.\u00a0 I couldn\u2019t believe the mess I\u2019d got myself into.\u00a0 He was just some rich kid.\u00a0 Supposed to crawl from the saloon on his belly after I\u2019d wiped the floor with him in fight.\u00a0 I\u2019d figured the only way he\u2019d shot Luke Jordan was by ambushing him on the trail when the outlaw least suspected it.\u00a0 And now I was standing here listening to him talk about beer glasses.\u00a0 I felt like I\u2019d jumped into Miller\u2019s pond forgettin\u2019 I didn\u2019t know how to swim.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">A quick glance around the room showed me the boys were all watchin\u2019 me now, not him.\u00a0 It was my move.\u00a0 If I crawled now, I\u2019d never be able to hold my head up in Elkton again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">I went for my gun.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Before I even got it out of the holster, Cartwright\u2019s gun was up and firing.\u00a0 Beer splattered my shirtsleeve and shards of glass pricked my arm as I finally got my gun out.\u00a0 I stared at the mess on the counter in disbelief, finally raising my eyes to see Cartwright with a lopsided smirk on his face.\u00a0 I gulped.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cOh.\u00a0 You would\u2019ve died of a real bad case of slow,\u201d he drawled.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">I gaped at him, the gun in my hand wavering a bit.\u00a0 He nodded at it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cPut it back.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">My hands were shaking, my knees threatened to buckle.\u00a0 I quickly shoved the gun back in my holster and held my hands where he could see \u2018em.\u00a0 I could feel the sweat beading on my forehead, more trickling down the small of my back.\u00a0 How could this snot-nosed kid be so calm?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">He moved, and I flinched, thinking he was going to shoot me next.\u00a0 But all he did was slide the other beer glass gently down the long counter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cNow.\u00a0 Drink to your good health and your good fortune.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">I licked my lips, now gone dry, as he slid his own gun back into his low-slung holster.\u00a0 Before I made any more of a fool of myself, I spun around and almost ran for the door.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Out on the sidewalk, I stood shaking, gasping for breath as I leaned against the wall letting the rough boards hold me up.\u00a0 That kid was crazy.\u00a0 He could have killed me.\u00a0 The sheriff needed to hear about him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">That was it.\u00a0 The sheriff.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">I headed for the other end of town at a dead run.\u00a0 The sheriff needed to run that crazy killer out of town.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span
