Adam Cartwright shifted in his saddle and watched the sun leaching fiery ribbons onto the hills in its descent from the lowering sky. It had been nearly two years since he’d seen a Nevada sunset, and then he reminded himself he was still in California. Though he had arrived in San Francisco more than a week ago, he hadn’t wired his family. As far as they were concerned, he was still in Boston. He was content to leave it that way for now.

His departure from the Ponderosa was not precipitated by an explosive argument or bitter disagreement as some might have imagined; instead, it was a weary accumulation of words over time, stacked like stones in a wall. Adam supposed the real problem between them was simply the fact that he and his father were just too much alike. An irresistible force and an immovable object cannot occupy the same space.

“I’m beginning to understand how the world can overcome a man,” he told his father that night. “It just wears him down until he’s too tired to fight what he can’t change. Pa, I don’t want to be that man.” That was when he realized push had finally come to shove.

As he knew they would, his brothers fought against his leaving at first, but even they eventually accepted the inevitable. At the end he could almost feel the collective sigh of relief, including his own. It had been a long goodbye for all of them.

The supreme irony of it all was how much he disliked Boston. He had always dreamed of returning one day, but after so many years the realization of that dream was cold and harsh. The damp winter chill seeped into his bones like a disease, making him ache all over, and sometimes the pain in his back set him off his feet. The sweltering summer wasn’t much better. Once so bright and full of promise to an idealistic young man of twenty, the city now appeared gray and soulless. Boston had changed, and so had he.

There had been one diversion, pleasant at first but ultimately disappointing. Jane Hadley was a handsome widow, well-read, financially independent and at times, utterly charming. Behind that bewitching smile, he discovered, she was vain, self-centered, demanding, and dismissive. It was just as well, for she would never leave Boston, and he could not stay.

The pale lights of a town dotted the dusky landscape below. With the remains of the day fading over his shoulder, Adam nosed his horse down the hill and past the weathered sign that read Junction in search of a meal and a bed for the night.

~*~

The saloon had no doubt seen better days, judging from the mishmash of worn-out tables and chairs and the dilapidated piano in the corner, but at least the beer wasn’t too warm. Adam was halfway through a mug when a fight broke out in the corner where two men were playing cards.

It wasn’t clear who was cheating whom, but epithets were swirling and fists were flying, shattering glass and toppling tables, much to the proprietor’s dismay. Adam watched with mild interest from other end of the bar, away from the fracas. It wasn’t the first time he’d witnessed a poker game gone sour, especially when tempers were fueled by whiskey. The combatants looked to be in their early twenties and pretty evenly matched, though the odds shifted when a solid left hook from one sent the other crashing backward toward the bat wing doors, where he landed near the feet of an imposing man wearing a badge.

Adam did a double take when he saw the sheriff, who bore a striking resemblance to an old acquaintance.

“All right, that’s enough,” said the sheriff, hoisting the man up from the floor. “Party’s over.”

“No, it ain’t!” said the other man, drawing his gun. “Not ‘til I get my money!”

The sheriff frowned. “You don’t want to do that, son.”

“Yeah, well maybe I do.”

“Think again,” said Adam, pressing a barrel of cold steel into his back.

The man grudgingly surrendered his weapon, still complaining about the money.

“I reckon that’s house money now, considering the damages,” said the sheriff. “Did you count it yet, Pete?”

The proprietor rifled through a handful of bills and coins he had picked up among the debris. “Looks twenty-six and two bits.”

“Well now, that’s hardly worth riskin’ your life over, is it? When the Central Pacific built northeast from Sacramento, the point where the two lines met was designated on the map as Junction, and Griders faded into history. New businesses sprang up nearly overnight with the advent of the railroad, some of which persevered and flourished while others languished and declined once the construction crews moved on. The roundhouse originally proposed for the site was built at Rocklin instead, where timber needed to fuel the climb over the Sierras was more accessible. The result was a small town teetering between what could have been and what yet might be, and according to its sheriff, a town where nothing much ever happened.

But in every town where nothing ever happens, something eventually does, and usually without much warning.

Adam was alone in the office when Yancey came in with the mail that afternoon. “Sheriff Tatum wanted me to drop this off and tell you he’ll be back as soon as he finishes at the bank. It wouldn’t have surprised him to see his family ride in here any day, and he honestly wouldn’t have minded, but his father was respecting his request for time. They understood each other even if they sometimes disagreed. Any problems between them always seemed to stem from the fact that they were so much alike, which wasn’t necessarily a bad thing, certainly not in the long run. And time has a way of rounding the rough edges between a father and son, like water over stones in a river bed.

The gentle tug of home lulled him to memories nearly forgotten. He scooped a young girl from the path of a pair of mules gone berserk and handed her to a frantic woman, just as Ezra stumbled out onto the sidewalk and fired toward two riders turning tail. There was no need to rush; he had hours before first light with nothing to do but wait.

He eased his back against a boulder, chewing slowly, trying to determine which part of his body hurt the most. It seemed like days instead of hours ago that Yancey brought it to him. The kid had stuck to Ezra like a shadow whenever he could; it was pure luck he’d been at the post office instead of at the bank. One boy spared, another taken. Adam didn’t know anything about Bill Dowdy, but it seemed that his brother was surely to blame for the young man’s destructive path and untimely end. As for Orv, the botched robbery was the work of a reckless fool, and the fact that he’d left his own brother to die, even more abhorrent to Adam, proved him a man without a conscience or natural affection.

After the meal, he stretched out on his bedroll next to the fire and watched the stars wheel overhead in a ritual as old as time itself. Men come and go but the stars abide. Ancient, innumerable, unreachable. The vastness of the night made him feel small, almost insignificant, but the idea that his family could see the same stars took the edge off the pervasive loneliness. It seemed odd, but he’d never felt their absence this deeply when he was in Boston.

His reasons for not going home were different now. He had a job to do, and he intended to see justice done, not just for Ezra but also for Yancey, Lottie, Amy, and Doc; people Adam had come to know and love in a short span of time. They were counting on him, above all, as Amy had reminded him tearfully, to stay alive. “Getting yourself killed won’t bring Ezra back.”

He had no intention of getting himself killed. It was a question of mind over matter, he assured himself. But his right hip remained particularly obstinate, his back intent on punishing him for the hours on the unforgiving ground, making Adam feel like an old man at forty.

It had been a restless night filled with dreams, conjured by the fateful events of the day and more. Ezra’s life blood leaching through his shirt; Yancey’s tearful pleading; Bill Dowdy’s contrite confession; a bereft mother crying. A hand on his shoulder and a voice like his father’s. Are you all right, son?

Don’t stay away too long. Come home before it’s too late.

The morning dragged on, and Adam was beginning to question his judgment in more ways than one. He had followed the trail to a shallow creek with no discernible exit point; instinct told him Dowdy would’ve ridden on midstream before crossing to cover his tracks, but since then there had been no signs; at least none that he saw. Hoss, I sure could use your help right now.

Adam eased his mount out of the creek where it narrowed and deepened on its descent into a rocky ravine. Dowdy would’ve crossed further upstream, he reasoned. Logic dictated he should backtrack and take a closer look for what he might have missed. Before the idea became motion, a muscle spasm in his lower back set off a chain reaction that nearly launched him from his horse, and he slid to the ground, clutching the saddle horn to stay upright, as he focused on breathing through the waves of pain that followed.

It had been a while since he’d had a spell like that, and it may not have been the worst but it wasn’t far off. Gradually, the throbbing eased as the muscle began to relax; coherent thought returned. What have you gotten yourself into, Cartwright?

He was in no hurry to get back in the saddle, figured first to stretch his legs, maybe have another one of Amy’s biscuits since he hadn’t bothered with breakfast. He was refilling his canteen when he caught sight of something moving in a stand of trees beyond the creek. A horse, no rider. Time to mount up, ready or not.

Ignoring the twinge in his back, Adam turned the way he had come, following the creek around a bend before crossing to the other side. He pulled his gun and eased his horse through the trees and back toward the ravine. He didn’t know if anyone was watching, but in the interest of his own good health he would make that assumption.

The spotted gray was Dowdy’s, no question. Adam didn’t find any evidence of blood on the horse, but it wouldn’t have been turned loose voluntarily in any case, much less by someone on the run. The hapless rider was afoot, possibly injured or maybe even dead. “Your man’s gotta be around here somewhere,” murmured Adam, gathering the gray’s reins and remounting his own horse. “Let’s go find him.”

Adam’s instincts were rewarded when he checked the ravine. Dowdy was alive, but just barely. Whether he’d been thrown from his horse or merely slipped trying to lead him down the rocky slope, Adam couldn’t say. The fall might not have been enough to kill him, but the swollen black mass that had been his left hand signaled the sealing of his fate. They had reached the boarding house; he stopped and turned toward her. “Miss Morgan, I know you must be feeling overwhelmed after what you’ve learned today, and I doubt you’ve had time yet to think about your plans for the future, but right now your being here is important to Amy, and especially to Lottie. To them, your father was someone very special, and that makes you special too, like it or not,” he said gently. “Be patient with them if they seem a little too eager at the moment. It’s a hard thing, letting go.”

He had undoubtedly recognized her discomfort with their attentions earlier, and she had misjudged him, perhaps all of them. A tall gray haired gentleman greeted him in the foyer.

“Evening, Adam.”

“Hello, Doc. I’d like you to meet Miss Evelina Morgan. Miss Morgan, this is Dr. Wynn Bradford.”

He bowed slightly in acknowledgment before meeting her eyes with a smile. “I’m very pleased to make your acquaintance, Miss Morgan.”

“How do you do?”

Their hostess appeared and ushered them into the dining room where a veritable feast adorned the table. Evelina’s mouth watered at the aroma of freshly baked bread. “Thank you for inviting me, Mrs. Brown.”

“Please, call me Amy. We’re delighted to have you.”

Lottie had just come from the kitchen with a plate piled high with rolls, which she set in front of Evelina. “You have no idea what it means.”

The two women regarded her with an almost unbearable kindness. Evelina glanced at the sheriff as he took his seat next to her before replying. “I think maybe I do.”

The food was every bit as good as it looked and smelled. Evelina was mindful not to let her appetite get in the way of good manners; after all, she was a lady, as Aunt Mary had always been quick to remind her, lest she forget. ‘A lady doesn’t ask for seconds.’ Apparently, Amy Brown didn’t know any better, because Evelina had no sooner finished her plate than saw it filled it again.

“Oh, I couldn’t.” It was a feeble lie that fooled no one. Amy acted as though she didn’t hear.

“Make sure you save room for my apple dumplings,” said Lottie.

“Well, this is a special occasion,” said Doc, grinning in anticipation.

“No question,” the sheriff agreed.

They made small talk around her, engaging her enough to be polite while allowing her time to enjoy her first decent meal in weeks. It was only after the last bite of dumpling went down that she became aware of their eyes on her.

“It was a lovely dinner, Mrs. Brown; I mean, Amy. And the apple dumplings were delicious,” she said to Lottie. She meant it.

Lottie smiled. “Your father always enjoyed them.”

In the following silence, Evelina felt the weight of expectation. What was she supposed to say? These people, her father’s friends, were more like a family to him than his own daughter. She could barely remember him, had no idea what he liked or didn’t like, or what had shaped his life since he left her in Saint Joe, and yet her presence was somehow supposed to be a comfort to them?

The words came from somewhere unbidden, and they tasted bitter. “You knew him better than I did.” And then, to her mortification, she began to cry.

Uncontrollably.

She was vaguely aware of arms around her as the two women gently guided her into the parlor to a comfortable chair, where they graciously left her alone to recover. Lottie reappeared a few moments later with a glass of water which Evelina accepted gratefully.

“I’m so sorry. I don’t know what came over me.”

Lottie shook her head. “You have nothing to apologize for. I’m sorry that you never had the chance to know your father, because he was a truly wonderful man, and he loved you very much, Evvy. When I first met him you were all he talked about.”

Evelina watched her eyes fill with tears. “You were in love with him, weren’t you?”

“I guess it was no secret.”

“Then I’m sorry for both of us.”

Amy joined them. “Doc asked me to say goodnight and that he hopes to see you again soon. Adam had to leave but said he’d be back in half an hour or so to take you back to the hotel. I told him I was hoping I could persuade you to stay here tonight.”

“That’s very kind of you, but I don’t think so. Not tonight.”

“I think I understand. But the invitation is open for as long as you’re here.”

“Are the dishes done?” asked Lottie.

“They’re soaking. I’ll finish them later.”

“Let me do them,” Evelina offered.

“Absolutely not,” said Lottie. “You’re a guest. I’ll help Amy.”

“Please. I’d like to do something that feels normal right now.”

Amy smiled. “All right. You wash, Lottie can dry, and I’ll put everything away.”

Evelina was grateful for the task; it was one she knew well and required nothing but muscle memory. Though she did little more than listen and smile, she found the cheerful prattle between Amy and Lottie soothing, as it revealed much about their friendship.

The front door creaked open just as they finished. “There’s Adam,” said Amy, hanging up her apron.

“I see I stayed away long enough to avoid kitchen duty,”

“I had plenty of help tonight,” she assured him. “And you’re just in time to walk Evelina back to the hotel. She’s had a long day, and I think it’s catching up with her.”

Evelina covered a yawn. Amy was right. The day and the meal were both catching up with her, and all at once she felt extremely tired.

Sheriff Cartwright smiled. “It’ll be my pleasure.”

“I’ll walk with you if you don’t mind,” said Lottie.

The evening was crisp but not cold, and Evelina found the walk refreshing in spite of her fatigue. No one spoke much; Lottie left them at the corner.

“Good night, Evvy. ‘Night, Adam.”

They waited until Lottie reached the cafe, where she turned and waved before going inside.

“So, which is it, Evelina or Evvy?” asked the sheriff.

“I don’t know.” Evvy was a lifetime ago, and Evelina was the girl in Saint Joe. She wasn’t sure who she was anymore.

“Time will tell, if you’ll let it.”

“What do you mean?”

“You’ve got decisions to make, but not right now, not when you’ve just had your feet knocked out from under you. Things that seem right today may look different tomorrow. Let the dust settle. Time is your friend in this case. You have others, too, you know.” He paused. “Besides, if you leave now, you’ll never know your father. Isn’t that why you came?”

It was too late for that now. Her father had left her once again, this time for good. She felt the sting of tears but shook them away, not trusting her voice to answer.

The sheriff continued. “I know it’s not the same, but no one is ever really gone as long as someone remembers. And there are plenty of people here who won’t forget Ezra Tatum. They can help you find him, if that’s what you really want.”

All she really wanted at that moment was to lose herself in sleep where she wouldn’t have to think about anything. It was a relief when they reached the hotel. She thanked him for his kindness.

“Not at all,” he replied. “By the way, Amy serves breakfast at 7:00. I can pick you up unless you’d rather sleep in.”

She took a moment to consider his offer. “I know the way.”

A corner of his mouth crept up. “Of course you do.” He lifted his hat. “Goodnight, Miss Morgan.”

“Goodnight, Sheriff Cartwright.”

~*~

It was few minutes past the hour when Adam arrived at the boarding house for breakfast the next day. Fifteen years later, my father came along – twenty-two, handsome, and, according to Uncle Matt, her worst fear. He said it broke her heart when my mother ran off with him. When she died, Aunt Mary said he’d all but killed her himself by taking her away to a life she wasn’t prepared for. My name is Adam.”

There was the smile he’d seen that morning, the one that showed in her eyes. “All right, Adam. And you can call me Evvy.”

~*~

That night, ensconced in her cozy room at Amy’s, fragments of Evvy’s childhood filled her thoughts. Memories loosely formed retreated into dark corners where light fell only occasionally; others blurred at the edges like watercolors. The smell of bread baking and her mother singing in the kitchen; her cheerful humming as she brushed and braided Evvy’s hair; the two of them picking wildflowers and making clover chains to wear around their necks. The stomp of her father’s boots on the porch; the tickle-scratch of his beard on her cheek when he hadn’t shaved. The way he made her mother laugh; their soft murmurings on the other side of the curtain as she drifted to sleep at night.

Then there was the morning her mother didn’t get out of bed. People were in the house. A baby was coming, someone said. Only it didn’t. Her father pulled her onto his lap and told her everything was going to be all right, but his voice sounded funny and he was holding her too tightly. Later he carried her into the room where her mother lay sleeping, her face as pale as Evvy’s china doll. Someone came and took her from his arms, and her mother never got up again.

The time after that was like waking up from a dream. Evvy was left in the care of neighbors while her father worked. In the evenings she would go home with him, but the house felt empty with just the two of them.

Something woke her late one night, a muffled sound in the dark, beyond the curtain. She sat up in her bed to listen, but it had stopped; she didn’t hear it again. She must have dreamed it, she decided. The only person on the other side of the curtain was her father, and fathers didn’t cry. She went back to sleep. And the next day she took her first carriage ride all the way to St. Joe.

But she’d been wrong. There were so many things she hadn’t understood, and even fathers cry sometimes. She only saw him once more, when she was about ten years old, and that wouldn’t have happened without Uncle Matt’s intervention. He looked so much older than she remembered, and when he left she didn’t know whether to feel sad or glad.

None of that mattered anymore. Her father, Aunt Mary, and Uncle Matt were all gone now, and Evelina Morgan, whose life had been orchestrated through the suffering and bitterness of others who thought they knew what was best for her, was buried with them. Evvy Tatum had been resurrected in her place. And though she hadn’t found what she had expected when she arrived Junction, she wondered if she, like Sheriff Cartwright – Adam – might be there for a reason. As he’d said, perhaps time would tell.

~*~

Weary of staring at the ceiling, Adam threw off his cover and pushed up from the cot. Sleep had been pressing earlier, but the act of preparing for bed had pushed it into the realm of restless thought.

He put on a shirt and went to his desk, pulling a bottle and a glass from a deep drawer. It was kept mainly for medicinal purposes, especially when his back was giving him trouble. But it wasn’t his back keeping him up tonight. He poured two fingers and sat down, hoping the indulgence would help unwind the day.

The letter he owed his father remained unwritten. He had put it off long enough, and he knew it would be a disappointment. He could have taken Doc’s suggestion to “light a fire” under the council to hire his replacement, but he didn’t. The choice to do nothing was, again, a choice in itself. It was up to him, as Doc said, when to go. But the truth was, he didn’t want to leave. Not now, anyway.

Adam was glad Evvy had decided to stay. He was sure that’s what Ezra would have wanted.
