Little Joe screamed in pain and Hoss let go of the diaper. He jumped back at the volume of his little brother\u2019s screams.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Adam gently took the pin from Hoss, quickly fastened the diaper, and cuddled his newest sibling to him. \u201cHush now. It\u2019s okay, Little Joe. Everything\u2019s okay.\u201d<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Little Joe\u2019s screams subsided to sobs and finally whimpers. He still gripped Adam\u2019s shirt tightly in his little fist.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cIt\u2019s okay, Hoss. I pinned you bunches of times. It\u2019ll get easier the more you practice.\u201d<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cAh don\u2019t wanna hurt him no more,\u201d answered Hoss, hands jammed in his pockets.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cLittle Joe\u2019s okay, Hoss. He\u2019s not bleeding. You just startled him.\u201d<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cAh hurt him.\u201d<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cBut you didn\u2019t mean it. Accidents happen with babies.\u201d<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Marie headed for the stairs still looking tired, but she was grateful for the 45 minutes of uninterrupted sleep. Ben had been right about Adam\u2014he was very happy tending to Little Joe. Pausing at the top of the staircase, a smile spread across her face as she watched Adam lift his little brother over his head and then bring him to face level. A huge, toothless grin was plastered on Little Joe\u2019s face.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cKin Ah try?\u201d asked Hoss.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Adam handed Little Joe over; Hoss raised his little brother over his head several times very quickly.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cNot so fast. Do it slower.\u201d<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hoss lifted the baby up again and held him up so Little Joe was looking down at him. Without warning, the baby spit up on Hoss\u2019 face. Marie clapped a hand to her mouth; she didn\u2019t want the boys to realize that she had been watching or for Hoss to be embarrassed.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Adam took Little Joe and used the towel on his shoulder to clean up the baby\u2019s face. He then handed it over to Hoss, who glumly cleaned the warm mess from himself.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cAh don\u2019t think he likes me,\u201d said Hoss sadly.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cThat\u2019s not true, Hoss. He\u2019s too little to know who or what he doesn\u2019t like. Besides, you spit up on me lots of times. You even spit up on Pa.\u201d<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cAh did?\u201d<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cYeah. Babies just do that. They don\u2019t mean anything by it.\u201d<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Marie decided to come downstairs and relieve Adam of baby duty. When he wasn\u2019t doing chores, helping with the books, or working, he was holding or playing with her Petit Joseph. Ben had told her that Adam would happily look after his littlest brother, but she had never expected such devotion from a twelve year old.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hearing footsteps, Adam held Little Joe so he could see his mother. He stretched out a little arm towards her. In a high-pitched voice, Adam said, \u201cMama,\u201d and waved one of the baby\u2019s arms.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Marie took her baby from her oldest son with a smile. \u201cHow\u2019s Mama\u2019s petit chou?\u201d she murmured as she held the baby to her shoulder.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cHe\u2019s been really good, Marie. Can I rock him for a while?\u201d<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cMaybe later, mon fils. Why don\u2019t you boys go see what your pere is doing?\u201d<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cCome on, Hoss, he\u2019s probably still in the barn.\u201d<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Quickly going to the fruit bowl, Hoss picked up three apples and caught up to his brother. \u201cYou\u2019re not gonna eat all those are you?\u201d asked Adam.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Putting two into his pocket, Hoss said, \u201cThey ain\u2019t all fer me.\u201d He then began munching on the third one as they walked. Hoss was trying hard to learn how to be a big brother, but it was harder to do than he had thought. A little baby seemed to be a whole lot of wor instead of a bundle of joy like everyone said. Little Joe was a bundle of smelly diapers most of the time. How Adam could stand to wash those was something he couldn\u2019t understand. Hop Sing sure seemed pleased that Adam didn\u2019t mind doing that chore. \u201cNo way,\u201d thought Hoss, \u201cam Ah gonna do that!\u201d<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Going inside the barn, Hoss immediately went to his pony and pulled an apple from his pocket. Buttermilk gently took the offered treat and Hoss watched the juice dribble out of her mouth as she happily crunched. Adam went to his horse, Beauty, and scratched the animal\u2019s neck under the mane. Beauty let out a contented snort at his human\u2019s touch.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cBonnie will be foaling soon,\u201d said Ben stepping from the horse\u2019s stall.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cKin Ah help, Papa?\u201d asked Hoss. \u201cAh helped before when you was gone.\u201d<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ruffling the boy\u2019s hair, Ben said, \u201cWe\u2019ll see.\u201d<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A piercing wail from the house got their attention and made the horses stamp. \u201cLittle Joe must need a changing,\u201d said Adam. He then trotted off for the house.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cPapa?\u201d<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cYes?\u201d<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cWho teached Adam how ta be a big brother?\u201d<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cI showed him how to change your diapers, bathe you, and feed you.\u201d<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cYa mean Ah gotta change Lil Joe\u2019s diapers ta be a good big brother?\u201d<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">With a chuckle, Ben answered, \u201cNo, Son. Adam did those things for you because your mother was\u2026gone. I couldn\u2019t tend to you all of the time, but he did those things for you with love.\u201d<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cThere ain\u2019t no way Ah\u2019m gonna love changin\u2019 diapers!\u201d<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ben had to work hard at not laughing. \u201cAdam helped take care of you and showed you how to fish, buckle your belt, and ride your pony because he loves you. A big brother does those things because he wants to see his younger brother succeed and be happy.\u201d<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cSo I gotta do those things fer Lil Joe?\u201d<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ben took Hoss over to a bale of hay and sat down so he could look in his son\u2019s eyes. Placing his hands on the boy\u2019s shoulders, he said, \u201cYou know how Adam always lets you have the last cookie on the plate and splits the last biscuit in half so you can each enjoy it?\u201d Hoss nodded his head. \u201cAdam does those things because he loves you. People who love each other do things like that to show that love. He changes Little Joe\u2019s diapers and bathes him out of love for him and your mother.\u201d<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cHow\u2019s that show he loves Mama?\u201d<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cBy doing those things, he gives Mama a chance to relax a little bit.\u201d<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cI ain\u2019t done much fer Lil Joe; how\u2019s he gonna know Ah love him?\u201d<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ben had to stop and think for a moment. Little Joe couldn\u2019t tell Hoss with words and, as a fussy baby, he was more likely to cry than smile. \u201cBabies can tell when someone loves them. In a couple of years, he\u2019ll need someone to show him how to catch worms for fishing, pick up frogs, and hide in piles of hay.\u201d<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hoss thought about that for a few moments. Adam didn\u2019t do a lot of frog catching now and he didn\u2019t like playing hide-and-seek too much anymore. If Little Joe was going to learn to do those things, he was going to have to teach him. The boy\u2019s face scrunched up in thought and then he asked, \u201cAre ya shore Ah gotta wait a couple a years?\u201d<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">With a chuckle, Ben hugged Hoss to him. Realizing how quiet everything was, he said, \u201cLet\u2019s go check on everyone.\u201d<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hoss helped his father secure the barn before heading for the house. Going inside, Ben saw Marie sitting near the fireplace, working on a needlepoint. She looked up and smiled. They could hear Adam talking nonsense in a high-pitched voice. Walking around the settee, they saw Adam slumped down on the settee with his boots up on the coffee table and Little Joe supported against his knees. He was gently being bounced by his oldest brother and the baby had a smile plastered on his face.\u00a0<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cWhat are you doing, Son?\u201d asked Ben.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cI\u2019m teaching Little Joe how to ride a pony.\u201d<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cThere ain\u2019t no pony,\u201d stated Hoss matter-of-factly.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cI know that. I\u2019m teaching him what riding a pony\u2019ll feel like for when he\u2019s big enough to really ride one.\u201d<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ben lowered himself to one knee and asked Little Joe, \u201cYou wanna come to Papa?\u201d<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Little Joe turned his smiling face to Ben and let out a hiccup. \u201cLet me have him, Son.\u201d Reluctantly, Adam handed his youngest brother over.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ben hugged his infant son to himself and stood up. Placing the baby against his shoulder, he walked slowly around the room. Little Joe suckled on his father\u2019s collar as his eyelids began to droop. Marie took in this scene with a pleased smile.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hoss plucked another apple from the fruit bowl and sat down next to Adam. \u201cHaven\u2019t you eaten enough apples, mon fils?\u201d<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cAh only had one, Mama.\u201d<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cBut you took three earlier.\u201d<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cHe fed two of those to Bonnie and Buttermilk,\u201d said Adam.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cAll right. You may have that one, Hoss, but no more snacks before supper.\u201d<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cYes, Ma\u2019am,\u201d he answered before biting into the juicy piece of fruit.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The clang of a pot in the kitchen followed by yelling in Cantonese awoke Little Joe with a start and he began screaming shrilly. Marie leapt from her chair and rushed to take him from her husband. Ben and the boys went into the kitchen after Marie took the baby upstairs.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cWhat happened, Hop Sing?\u201d<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cWhich boy put pin with potatoes?\u201d<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Adam turned red with embarrassment. \u201cI was teaching Hoss how to fasten a diaper pin using a potato and a towel. I guess we forgot to take the pin out of the potato pot.\u201d<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hop Sing rubbed the fleshy part of his thumb where the pin had pricked him and glared at the boys. \u201cYou no practice in kitchen.\u201d With that, he retrieved the pin, handed it to Adam, and went back to preparing supper. The cook muttered to himself as Ben and the boys left the kitchen.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Upstairs, Little Joe was still wailing. Ben couldn\u2019t remember Adam crying so loud and Hoss had mostly whimpered as an infant. Marie\u2019s footsteps could be heard as she paced back and forth in the master bedroom.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cMay I go help?\u201d asked Adam. Thinking it might make a difference, Ben nodded his head.\u00a0<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cKin Ah go, too, Papa?\u201d<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cLet\u2019s both go.\u201d<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">They reached the second floor as Adam was coming out of Hoss\u2019 room with the carved animals. Entering the master bedroom, they saw that Marie was close to tears as she tried to calm the baby.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cSit in the rocker and hold Little Joe so he can see me,\u201d requested Adam. Marie did as he asked and held her fidgety, crying son so he could see his oldest brother.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Holding up the cow, Adam moved it back and forth for Little Joe to see. In a high voice, he said, \u201cI want to go to the barn but I don\u2019t know the way. I\u2019ve been looking for hours but it\u2019s not where I remember. Maybe someone could help me.\u201d<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The baby was still crying and Ben was getting ready to tell Adam to stop when Hoss reached for the sheep. He said, \u201cHello, Miss Moo-Moo. Ah heard you was lookin\u2019 fer the barn. Ah know how ta git there. Ya wanna come with me?\u201d<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The volume of Little Joe\u2019s cries began to decrease and his eyes weren\u2019t shut tight anymore. Marie was amazed by her sons\u2019 performance so far. Maybe they could calm they baby after all.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cAre you sure you know the way, Miss Fleece?\u201d<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cAh\u2019m pretty shore \u2018cause Ah found it on mah own once before.\u201d<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cLet\u2019s go together then.\u201d<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Both boys moved their animals in front of Little Joe in hopping motions. The baby was sniffling now more than crying and the tears had stopped flowing. Ben sat down on the edge of the bed, amazed by the boys\u2019 efforts to quiet their little brother.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Picking up the pig, Adam hopped it over to the cow and sheep. \u201cHello, Miss Moo-Moo and Miss Fleece. Where are you going?\u201d<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cWe\u2019re goin\u2019 ta the barn if we kin find it.\u201d<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cI\u2019m passing by the barn on my way to town.
