A Main Character’s Nightmare (Is an Author’s Delight)<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cNo!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Little Joe crossed his arms over his chest.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat do you mean, \u201cno\u201d? I’m in charge around here, so you have to do what I say!\u201d<\/p>\n

He glared at the woman before him: she was tall\u2014around 5’8\u201d\u2014with medium-length honey-blonde hair, a sprinkling of freckles dusting her slightly prominent nose, a pair of spectacles, a shapely if not slightly round figure…To tell the truth, nothing in her appearance made him dislike her except for the note pad held firmly in her left hand. Underneath this facade, he knew, lay a\u00a0lunatic<\/strong>\u00a0just waiting to spring her trap on any unsuspecting prey: the prey being him…again.<\/p>\n

\u201cI told you I’m not gonna do it! I’m tired, I’m hungry and I’m not-\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201c-gonna do it. So you’ve said, but what if I told you you’d get the girl in the end?\u201d<\/p>\n

Joe hesitated. The woman tried to hide her smile. She could see the war waging inside of her hero.<\/p>\n

If I do it, maybe I’ll finally get to settle down with Sadie…Then again, she’d probably just kill her off in the next story-<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cNo!\u201d<\/p>\n

Her shoulders slumped at the almost-shout.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cHey! What’s all the commotion about\u2014Oh, hi, Annie K.\u201d<\/p>\n

Adam appeared at the top of the stairs, his black outfit\u00a0made him look debonaire\u00a0in the golden lamp light.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease, help me get your brother to cooperate with me.\u201d Annie nearly wailed and the dark man trotted down the stairs, taking the woman in his arms. A flood of tears burst forth and instantly Little Joe felt the teeny winiest bit of guilt. Adam, on the other hand, was glaring at his younger brother.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat are you doing to make her cry like this? She’s good to you and you hurt her feelings-\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHER FEELINGS!! What about mine? She’s left me in the bottom of a well with my best friend, had me punched in the eye by you, had me covered in chicken-pox, had me hung by the neck and now she wants to shoot me!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou aren’t the only one you know,\u201d Adam started to complain, but when he saw the anger in Annie’s eyes he changed tact,\u201dbut who’s complaining? She has been good to all of us, we get our JAMs, PAMs, JPMs, a little bit of romance, some\u00a0pining<\/strong>\u2014\u201c<\/p>\n

\u201cPINING! Pining, who’s pining? I only want to be with my girl and I know that-that-that\u00a0story hunter<\/em>\u00a0is gonna kill her off the moment I get down on one knee!\u201d She pulled herself away from Adam and took a few steps forward.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat’s not true! How do you know what I’m going to do when I’m the author and you are not?\u201d Joe scrunched his face up in thought and for a brief\u00a0interval<\/strong>\u00a0there was silence in the room. He couldn’t think of an answer to that at the moment, but he still didn’t trust her; his primary reason was because she was so obsessed with seeing him suffer and his\u00a0secondary<\/strong>one was because…because…what was his secondary reason? For the life of him he couldn’t remember, but he wasn’t about to tell her that. He stared at the woman before him\u2014she was mighty pretty standing there with the\u00a0moon shining<\/strong>\u00a0down on her through the open window\u2014and he had to admit that she hadn’t treated him too badly. In fact, she always did end her stories about them on a happy, almost comedic note. From the corner of his eye he caught Adam motioning for him to give up and with a herculean sigh, he finally did just that.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh alright, but let’s get one thing straight:I better get the girl in the end and there better not be any buts about it, deal?\u201d She sent him a dazzling smile and then hastily spat into her palm before proffering him her hand\u2014which he took with a disgusted look on his face.<\/p>\n

\u201cDeal!\u201d She replied cheerily.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow, Adam, will you be a dear and fetch that buffalo gun from the cabinet, I don’t want you to miss when you take the shot.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWHAT?!\u201dThey both cried simultaneously; Annie rolled her eyes.<\/p>\n

It was going to be a long night.<\/p>\n
