Old Man Dizzy<\/strong><\/p>\n This was done for the April Chaps and Spurs Challenge. We had the old world sayings below:<\/p>\n Scarce as hens teeth, pulling a kite, hobble your lip, hair in the butter, nail me to the counter and velvet couch.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Adam and Hoss Cartwright stood solemn alongside a fresh dug grave as they paid their last respects to old man Dizzy. Walter Dizzy came to the Cartwrights when Adam was eleven and Hoss just five years old. He was the typical hard working ranch hand that all the men looked up to and admired. But, he also loved children and spent many hours \u201ckeeping an eye\u201d on Adam and Hoss as their father worked hard to establish himself and set up a functioning ranch.<\/p>\n \u201cNever could understand him much,\u201d Hoss softly spoke as he placed his hat back on his head. \u201c\u2026All that old world mumble jumble.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cHe did have a unique way of talking,\u201d Adam agreed as he put his arm around his brother\u2019s shoulder and the two started walking away toward their awaiting horses.<\/p>\n \u201cI just wish we could have gotten here in time to a least say goodbye to him,\u201d Hoss stopped and turned once more toward the grave. \u201cHe was sure good to us, wasn\u2019t he Adam?\u201d<\/p>\n Adam simply nodded as his mind drifted back to his first meeting with old Dizzy\u2026<\/p>\n ~~~~<\/p>\n \u201cBoys, I like you to meet Walter Dizzy,\u201d his father announced boldly.<\/p>\n \u201cPlease to meet you, sir,\u201d Adam responded respectively, while nudging his brother to mimic his actions.<\/p>\n \u201cPwease to meet you,\u201d the younger Cartwright blurted out as his wide eyes scanned upward at the ominous looking man in front of him.<\/p>\n Old Dizzy realized the awe in the young boy\u2019s face and squatted down before him.<\/p>\n \u201cI can tell you\u2019ve got two mighty fine fellas here, Mr. Cartwright\u2026 mighty fine indeed. Know how to act proper, too.\u201d This brought a big smile to Hoss\u2019s face.<\/p>\n \u201cWell, thank you, Dizzy. I must say I\u2019m very proud of them myself.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019d say these two are \u2018bout as scarce as hen\u2019s teeth <\/strong>in your book I figure.\u201d Dizzy then ruffled young Hoss\u2019 hair and once again stood upright.<\/p>\n Suddenly, young Hoss\u2019 face construed up into a frown and Dizzy immediately noticed.<\/p>\n \u201cNow hold on there, young fella. No need to be pulling a kite<\/strong>. What\u2019s troubling you?\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWell\u2026\u201d Hoss stopped and looked down to the ground in hesitation. He then mumbled softly, \u201cI was just wondering is all.\u201d<\/p>\n Dizzy was unrelenting. \u201cNow there\u2019s not need to hobble your lip <\/strong>with old Dizzy. Speak your mind, sonny.\u201d<\/p>\n Adam could tell his brother was a little shy at speaking aloud to a stranger.<\/p>\n \u201cGo ahead, Hoss. It\u2019s all right,\u201d he encouraged.<\/p>\n Hoss remained quiet, but glanced over at his brother nervously.<\/p>\n Dizzy pretended to think hard. \u201cHmmm, it seems like we found a hair in the butter, <\/strong>Mr. Cartwright.\u201d He then took a long pause before adding, \u201cAnd, in my book there\u2019s only one thing to do about it.\u201d<\/p>\n Without warning, Dizzy squatted down in front of Hoss and started tickling him in the ribs. Hoss let out a shriek of delight as he backed away just out of the man\u2019s reach.<\/p>\n \u201cWell, I think that should just about cure it, don\u2019t you?\u201d<\/p>\n This brought a round of laughter from all.<\/p>\n \u201cNow, young fella, why don\u2019t you tell me what\u2019s on your mind.\u201d<\/p>\n Hoss\u2019s smile faded from his face as he once again looked down in hesitation. \u201cWell, with all due respect, sir. Hen don\u2019t have teeth.\u201d<\/p>\n Everyone let out a loud laugh.<\/p>\n \u201cOh they don\u2019t do they?\u201d Dizzy cackled. \u201cBen, I do believe your boy here is trying to nail me to the counter.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Adam Laughed out loud as the childhood memory faded from his mind and he was brought back to the present.<\/p>\n \u201cI don\u2019t see anything worth laughing about, Adam.\u201d Hoss was quick to scold.<\/p>\n \u201cOh, I was just thinking about the first time we met Dizzy, Hoss.\u201d Adam chuckled once more. \u201cYou spent an entire week trying to catch a chicken just to look in his mouth to see if it had teeth.\u201d<\/p>\n This time, both brothers erupted in laughter, reliving the memory.
