\u201cI cain\u2019t believe he\u2019s\u2026\u201d Hoss announced. \u201cIt\u2019s like he ….\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIf that were me down there; I sure wouldn\u2019t be doing that. Big, know-it-all brother and he just\u2026\u201d Joe bemoaned.\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cI can\u2019t believe I\u2019m related to him.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve taught him better than this\u2026 We\u2019ve had talks in the past, he knows about accountability and respectability; one doesn\u2019t just… I can\u2019t believe I need to have that talk with him!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s he doin\u2019 now, Pa?\u201d Hoss inquired.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cLooks to me like he\u2019s going off the deep end there, Hoss. Such a shame, all because \u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cJoseph!\u201d Ben quietly warned.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYa think we should go down there an\u2019 help him Pa?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNo Hoss, your brother wouldn\u2019t appreciate our interference.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBut Pa\u2026\u201d Joe protested. \u201cWe can\u2019t let him just\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYes, we will. Now come on, let\u2019s return to bed and leave your brother be.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

*****<\/span><\/p>\n

With the downstairs clock chiming an hour before midnight, the three left the bedroom window with Hoss returning to his bed while Ben and Joe left the room.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBrother, I sure hope you have an explanation come mornin\u2019,\u201d Hoss hoped, blowing out the lantern and pulling the covers up to his chin. \u201cHope I can get some sleep.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

*****<\/span><\/p>\n

Across the hallway, Little Joe entered his darkened bedroom and made his way to his bed.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt doesn\u2019t make any sense. Pa should have let me do what I wanted to do. I sure hope Pa don\u2019t get mad at me in the morning for not rising bright and early\u2026 All because of his<\/em> caterwauling.\u00a0 But then\u2026\u201d As snarky smile floated across Joe\u2019s face as he thought on the scene outside.<\/span><\/p>\n

*****<\/span><\/p>\n

Down the hallway, Ben entered his bedroom and strayed to the overstuffed wing-backed chair that sat across from his bed, next to his window.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhy son? This isn\u2019t like you,\u201d he mused, gazing at Elizabeth\u2019s picture.<\/span><\/p>\n

The great room clock chimed one o\u2019clock in the morning, and he was still awake listening for his eldest to enter the house.<\/span><\/p>\n

*****<\/span><\/p>\n

Hop Sing was clearing the empty breakfast dishes from the table before Adam made his way, albeit slowly, down the staircase, a dramatic pause ensued before he turned and made his way down the lower steps. His hands ostensibly offering balance as they perched on both rails.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the table, Ben looked up from the Territorial Enterprise, lowering one corner of the newspaper he had been reading; while coffee cups made their way to lips, to hide the snickering smiles that graced the faces of the two youngest Cartwrights.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNot one word,\u201d Adam proclaimed, guiding guided himself along the table that sat behind the red and white striped settee, carefully placing one foot in front of the other.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cGood morning, son,\u201d Ben quietly greeted Adam, who finally slipped into his chair and used both hands to support his head. \u201cI presume you won\u2019t be going to church with us this morning?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

With puffy, bloodshot, glaring eyes Adam looked up as if to say, \u2018You really expect me to answer that question?\u2019<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Upon seeing his son\u2019s expression, Ben raised his newspaper to hide his grin.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMusta been some party last night,\u201d Hoss couldn\u2019t help himself from saying as he set his coffee cup to the table with a loud clink to the saucer. \u201cCain\u2019t wait to see what Ross looks like. I\u2019m sure Delphine ain\u2019t gonna be none too happy with you regarding the happenin’s of his bachelor party.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cPlease, Hoss\u2026\u201d pleaded Adam, cringing at the noise of China on China, lowering his face to his hands.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDelphine?! What about Pa?\u201d Joe snipped, looking surreptitiously from one family member to the next.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat about Pa?\u201d Adam suffered to ask as he dared to raise his head.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYou put on quite a show last night\u2026\u201d Ben answered from behind his newspaper.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cShow? You didn\u2019t come to town last night\u2026 did you?\u201d Adam asked.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNo, son,\u201d Ben answered, still hidden.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNope,\u201d Hoss proclaimed, lifting his coffee cup and noisily slurping.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDidn\u2019t need to,\u201d Joe giggled. \u201cWe had a show outside last night.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d Adam stated in total perplexity.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNot what, who,\u201d Hoss plainly stated.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWho? Who was here?\u201d Adam asked, his heart began to beat faster.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t know, but the way they were pleading with you, and you just sitting there in the water trough,\u201d teased Joe.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI what?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYep, still dressed and ya decide to take a dip in the horse trough,\u201d Hoss laughed.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t remember\u2026\u201d moaned Adam, again his head returned to his hands.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAdam, I\u2019ll ask that you respect my position as your father and that you not dishonor our home by repeating your performance of last night.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t worry, how can I repeat it, if I can\u2019t remember\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cJust pray that Delphine doesn\u2019t call off the wedding,\u201d Ben advised, still hiding behind his newspaper trying to keep from busting out laughing.<\/span><\/p>\n
