\u201cFlowers for the lady, sir?\u201d<\/p>\n

The lilting voice drew Adam Cartwright\u2019s eyes to the smudged face of a young flower seller. His gaze traveled to the tray of nosegays she held and then to the face of the girl beside him.<\/p>\n

\u201cWould you. . .\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t have to. . .\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhich one?\u201d<\/p>\n

She pointed to a bright bunch of mixed flowers tied with lavender ribbon. He asked the price and drew the requisite coins from his pocket. \u201cThank you, sir.\u201d The girl bobbed a curtsey and went on her way. Adam handed the flowers to Eugenia Van Pelt who immediately brought them to her upturned nose.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, thank you, good sir.\u201d Eugenia smiled coyly and fluttered her lashes. \u201cAren\u2019t they beautiful?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re only pretty; you\u2019re beautiful,\u201d Adam replied smoothly.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy, Mr. Cartwright, I didn\u2019t know the college taught flattery, or is that what you always say when you buy a lady flowers?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve never bought a girl flowers before; you are the first, Miss Van Pelt.\u201d<\/p>\n

She widened her eyes in a show of disbelief. \u201cYou expect me to believe that you have never given another girl flowers?\u201d<\/p>\n

Adam\u2019s lips curled upward. \u201cNo, but I never said I hadn\u2019t given a girl flowers; I said I had never bought them before. Back home flowers don\u2019t grow in hot houses. They can be picked for free in any meadow.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd have you picked many of them.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve picked my share.\u201d His eyes sparkled, and he drew her hand back through his arm. They started to walk once more.<\/p>\n

\u201cThings really are very different out in the West,\u201d Eugenia murmured softly as she buried her nose in the bouquet.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome things. Back home I might have you calling me Adam by now. We could always say it was to prevent confusion with my father.\u201d<\/p>\n

Eugenia giggled. \u201cOh, there would never be any confusion if your father were here. They would simply call you young Mr. Cartwright. Papa already does occasionally.\u201d She deepened her voice, \u201cAre you telling me that that young Mr. Cartwright is escorting Eugenia again?\u201d<\/p>\n

He leaned closer and whispered in her ear, \u201cAgain and again and again.\u201d They both glanced over their shoulders to where her parents stood keeping her well within their sight. \u201cI didn\u2019t know your father objected to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, he doesn\u2019t object to you. Papa objects to the fact that I\u2019m old enough to receive callers or be escorted anywhere by anyone. I\u2019d be in braids and short skirts still if he had his way.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe doesn\u2019t want to lose his little girl. One can hardly blame him.\u201d<\/p>\n

She laughed softly and shook her head. \u201cHe should know he will never lose me. It is a blessing, though, that Papa has an interest in so many different businesses.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou expect the man you marry to join one of your father\u2019s businesses?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, of course, I mean unless. . .\u201d She turned and raised her eyes to his. \u201cIt would be a very important place he was offered.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd if he had a very important place of his own?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, then, I guess it would depend on where that place was.\u201d Her voice had grown flat, and their steps slowed.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think perhaps we should rejoin your parents, Miss Van Pelt,\u201d Adam said after a silent minute.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, I expect we should.\u201d<\/p>\n

They turned. Adam did not take her arm, and when she sniffed the flowers again, they did not smell as sweet.<\/p>\n
