The vivid description of the opening paragraphs set the dramatic tone for the whole story… I loved Joe’s conversation with himself, daring to believe. The trials of your story proves that what the heart has to say is more imporant than what the mind has to think.

Author’s Response:

Thank you! Yes, we can talk ourselves into believing things that we know, deep down inside, aren’t true. Listen to your heart or your soul, because “logic” is not always “right.” πŸ˜‰

Some think that white is the absence of color, but in stage lighting white light is achieved by blending blue, red, and green just as your story illuminated the viewpoints of all the Cartwrights, revealing the white light of … not purgatory, but truth: God hears the prayers that matter.

Brilliant!

Author’s Response:

What an awesome review, Cheaux! I can’t believe I never responded to this! Life gets so overwhelming that best intentions do fall by the wayside. I can assure you I saw this review back when you posted it, but somehow never realized I didn’t reply. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, and please accept my apologies for my delay! πŸ™‚ And yes, God hears the prayers that matter, the ones our hearts know even when our minds don’t!

Wow! That was powerful and I wish I could write half as well as you do, freyakendra. Wow!

Author’s Response:

Thank you! The opening scene came on strong for me, in a very visual way. It felt so good to get it written. Not that I wanted to torture Joe, of course; but… sort of a sense of poetry to it. I’m so glad you enjoyed it!Β

I found myself holding my breath in the midst of the standoff, waiting, hoping, fearing, hoping….

A powerfully written piece of drama, with enough action and enough family moments to make it a *real* Bonanza story. beautifully done, Freyakendra!

Author’s Response: Thank you so much! Calling it *real* means a lot to me! πŸ™‚ I’m so glad you enjoyed it!

Great story. I’m saving this one to read over and over.

Author’s Response: Thank you! I’m very glad you enjoyed it; and especially glad you enjoyed it enough to want to read it “over and over.” πŸ˜€

This was another great story to add on to your others….I do love stories where Joe suffers and Adam feels guilty but Adam definitely had all the “best lines” in this tale. I loved Joe’s comment that “he wasn’t mindless despite the things that Adam might say now and again”. I also liked the references back to “Quality of Mercy” and Adam taking the Appaloosa horse from the Indian at the end. Adam’s “new clothes” – I wonder where he found all black clothes?! And of course I loved the JPM and the JAM at the end and the comments that Adam “guarded his deepest emotions like private treasures” and when “a tear slipped past Adam’s internal, private sentries.” I love how fan fiction is able to “broaden” out the personalities and character of all 4 C’s. How I wish all 4 had lived long enough to perhaps read Bonanza fan fiction; I think they all would have “glowed” to see how much love and attention go into each story.

Author’s Response: Thank you so very much for such a thoughtful review! I’m so glad you enjoyed the story, and especially glad you pointed out the lines that you did! πŸ™‚ It would be great if they could have seen how much love we still put into what they created (although it could scare them to see how much we love S?S!). Of course, I’m sure they *do* know how much love goes into this anyway. πŸ˜‰

Awesome, Awesome story. I actually see this being an episode. You are great at capturing the emotions of all of our boys! I love Joe’s line about this is the last time he tries to buy anyone a special horse.

What an awesome story!! Instantly one of my favorites!! Loved the SJS with the rest of the family right there and the relationship between all of them. Please, keep them coming!! Thanks for writing!! JT

Author’s Response: Thank you so very much! This one struck me in the middle of writing Endgame–so much that I just had to step away from the game long enough to get this written. It just sort of told itself to me. I’m glad you enjoyed it!

Angela Lawso Well written dramatic story and emotional to the end. I almost believed Joe wasn’t going to make it this time.

Author’s Response: Thank you so very much! They’ll always “make it” when I have anything to say about it! πŸ˜‰

Great family story. Liked that you tied this to an actual ep and a subject that can be debated endlessly. I have a particular fondness for stories that drop the reader right into the middle of the action from the get-go, like this one does.

Author’s Response: Thank you so much! My “vision” dropped me right into the story, too. I had to then figure out the why’s and how’s. πŸ˜‰ I’m glad you enjoyed it!

Excellent! As much as I loved it as a WIP, its even better reading straight through. The opening chapter is so powerful in its description, it begs the reader to go on.

Author’s Response: Thank you very, very much!! It was definitely an addicting write! I couldn’t stop until it was finished! I’m so glad you found it powerful enough to keep reading and to come here to read it again, all in one place!

That was a perfect story. I read it on the forum, but enjoyed reading it again all the way through in one sitting. I have said it before, but I will say it again. I just love the way you write. Your descriptions are so vivid and they flow like poetry.

Author’s Response: Thank you so very much! ‘Perfect’ is a nice word to hear! πŸ˜‰ And thank you especially for comparing my writing to poetry! I suppose a lifetime of writing poetry has fully integrated into my stories! πŸ˜€

Good writing. I read the first part of this on the forum, and then had to wait until you put it up here to read the rest of it; it was really good! Poor Joe; that sounded verrrry painful. πŸ™

Author’s Response: I understand about starting WIPs and then wanting to pick them up as complete in the library! It’s hard to keep up in the forum! I’m very glad you came to the library for the full version! And yes, definitely SJS in extreme! I’m glad you enjoyed the story! Thank you!

great story… A Cartwright wanting to die was a different way to go and it was great Thanks for sharing Maggie

Author’s Response: Yes, it was interesting to get the “please let me die”! angle in this story. I wasn’t really sure where it was going when I started writing that image in my mind, as shown in the first paragraphs. It all just sort of clicked together. I’m very glad you enjoyed it! Thank you!

Dear Freya, I liked your story very much. The way you picked up the plot from “Quality of Mercy” was good. Special the way you concentraded about giving up and surviving was a pleasure to read. Thanx for this interesting story. JoeC

Author’s Response: Thank you so very much! I’ve always loved the angst in that episode. I wasn’t really think of that though when I started this story. It just sort of clicked into place! I’m glad you found it a pleasure and an interesting story! Thanks again!

  1. So very good! Moving throughout, with a good harkening back to Ben’s wisdom and its lasting effect from the episode. Nice delineations of all characters without favoritism for one or another seeping through. So wonderful to savor an excellently crafted story.

  2. This is a beautiful story about surviving and drawing inner strength when you think you have nothing left in the tank. The pulse of life is a wondrous thing, a miracle. As always the JPMs shine through.
