I regret to admit that the summary did not inspire me to read this story.  It was only after an e:mail discussion with Krystyna that I decided to give it a read.  I should have read it previously.

In “A House Divided” we learned of Adam’s and Joe’s stand, as well as Pa’s.  However, ‘Man in the Middle’ should not be taken lightly.  The gentle giant finds it incomprehensible to have to choose sides, even after both sides uniquely present their cases upon the Ponderosa.

Neither side can be completely described in the stark terms of “Black and White”  when not all is as it seems.  Both sides can’t be right and both sides can’t be wrong.  But neither side can be completely right and the other side completely wrong.  And with so many undercurrents pushing and pulling; how can one man choose?

Krystyna, you’ve written a compelling story of conscience that scratches at more than just the surface.

Author’s Response: BluewindFarm, this is a very insightful review to this story, in fact, it puts in your words what I wanted to convey in the story, thank you so much for doing that for me, I truly appreciated it, not only because it clarifies what I want to say via the story but because it shows that as a reader you saw the extent that I needed to get the reader to feel for everyone involved in it. Many thanks, BluewindFarm, and best wishes Krystyna

  1. Your writing, your word images, conjure all there is to think about as this sad drama played out in a lone cabin. I was riveted to the entire story and as Hoss is thinking of where he belongs in the scheme of things I find I ponder some of the same thoughts. Thank you for this unusual and thought-provoking piece of writing.

    1. Thank you for such a sensitively written review for this story. I suppose,in a way, I was trying to show that there were all kinds of victims of the evils of prejudice and the civil war. Also that Hoss truly was a humble man in actually appreciating his role as the man in the middle. I really thank you for this review AC
