Date: 17 Oct 2010 01:32 pm Title: A Mouthful of Regret This was a good story, although rather intense, with Joe feeling so guilty and Ben being nasty to him, although that was only because he was so worried about Adam.Thank goodness for Hoss – loved the bit when he found Joe in the loft and made him feel betterAnd the ending was so sweet, after all at 12 Joe was still only a boy, not a man, and needed a hug with his brotherLittle Joe foreverLynneAuthor’s Response:Thank you, Lynne, for understanding why Ben lashed out at Joe. Hoss was probably used to his father getting riled up and didn’t let him bother him, yet he knew his little brother needed some comfort. I’m so pleased to know you enjoyed this story.*

This was so well written and kept me hooked all the way through. The brotherly interactions hit all the right notes. A wonderful story! Thank you for writing and sharing!
Poor Joe! All the guilt and disappointment was eating away at him and when he found out it wasn’t as he feared, it must have been a welcomed relief helping to strengthen the bond between brothers. Joe and Adam definitely have more in common than they realize.
Enjoyed this beautiful story about Adam and Joe’s relationship. The attack caused that relationship to come to a full circle. Loved how mature Joe was in handling his father’s initial reaction.
I love Joe and Adam moments, very sweet!
Good story but I was really, really disappointed in Ben’s reactions! Joe was only 12 years old and yet Ben treated him like he should have acted calmly in the as if he was an old, seasoned hand at bear hunting! And to say such cruel things to him; well, shout them really! I don’t care if it was in the heat of the moment; by the time they got home, he had plenty of time to realized how traumatized Joe was and at least treat him the way he did.
Then, when he finally stopped to think about Joe’s state of mind for a second he gave a tiny apology. One sentence: “I’m sorry for being so harsh with you, Joseph. I had no right.” as if he had scolded him for spilling a sack of feed or breaking a vase. That is not nearly enough for the horrible, hateful words he flung at poor Joe!
On a lighter note: In so many stories, Joe’s “favorite hiding place” is the barn loft. If you have a FAVORITE hiding place, it isn’t really a HIDING place anymore. Everybody knows to look for you there, so you’re not really hiding, LOL! If he wants to hide, he needs to find a place that isn’t the very first place anyone looks. 😉
I so agree with your comments, especially when it comes to what Ben said. As a parent, it’s hard to see one child hurt and another in shock. I kept thinking, ‘Joe is only 12. How do you (Ben) expect him to react in a life-threatening situation?’ Hoss was really great with Joe and completely understood what he was going through. This was, though, a great story of brotherly love.
Good story. Interesting response from Ben towards Joe, but I guess panic set in with Adam’s injuries. Love the reference to Adam’s chest and it tickling. A lot,of,us wish we could do the same haha.
Don’t normally read prequels but loved this. Siblings don’t always get along and when you say things you end up regretting, its always worse when accompanied by an emergency. They got the chance to straighten it out. Although – I am somewhat surprised by Ben’s attitude.
Aww! A cute story, Patina! You got the sibling relationship down perfectly; being the youngest of two, I completely understand Joe’s pov. My brother and I bickered all the time like this–we still do sometimes–but I wouldn’t trade him for the world…even though he does have a big head. 😛 I love those JAM moments something fierce! Brava!
This was just wonderful !
Thank you, Joesgal. I appreciate it!
A true testament to the love shared between two brothers who appear so different but are in reality are very much alike. No matter what comes, they will always stand by one another to face whatever comes. Great prequel and totally charming!!!
Thank you, MissKitty4Adam! The best description I’ve seen of Adam and Joe is “two sides of the same coin.” I’m glad to know that comes through in this story.
Words said in anger and in haste… regrets and fears. Wonderful story of family. I think they’ll do just fine.
Thank you for reading, BWF! Glad you enjoyed it!
