No man is alone; every man is a part of something more, only asked to do what they can, until they no longer have to. Hold on… to family and to trust, for in each other’s arms peace reigns.

Author’s Response:

It’s a difficult thing to hold onto trust… But with a family like their’s, it’s not hard at all! 😉 Thank you!

Another wonderful story! The touching scenes with Adam and Joe are fab. Also Hoss…can’t leave his sweetness out.

Thank you

Wonderful story Freya. You did such an amazing job describing Adam’s emotional turmoil and how he felt about everything that happened. I loved all the dialogue between the three brothers. The Hoss moments were so sweet Hoss like.

Oh, Wow……what a powerful, gut-wrenchingly emotional story this was. I kept writing down phrases/events that I wanted to comment on, but I was more interested in following the story, line by line. I loved all of the Cartwrights’ interactions in this story: Adam trying to hold Joe up out of the water; Hoss following a bird’s cawing to find his brothers; Pa taking Adam’s place in the water; Adam repeatedly apologizing for not being able to save Joe; Hoss manipulating the horse, rope and tree to free Joe; Hos holding the reins of Adam’s horse and Pa carrying Joe on his horse as they made their way back to the Ponderosa; Hoss’ comment: “It’s OK, Joe, I got you.” Hoss being willing to switch places if it meant either brother would get well….. and on and on. And of course through it all, Joe was magnificently and heroically suffering (all to feed the addiction of we SJS fans). I also liked Hoss’ comment that it was a comfort that Hoss knew that in all these crises, “everyone was right where they needed to be”. I must say that Adam is a very effective emotional sufferer and the scene with him and Joe in the barn was very moving as was Hoss’ dream about the globe in the sea. Adam was suffering on the inside, and Joe on the outside (although I must say that Joe suffers emotionally very effectively as well). This was just a great story.

Author’s Response: Thank you so much for this! It means a lot to me to hear you say you wanted to follow the story line by line. And thank you for taking so much time to summarize key points that stayed with you

Inca222 When your characters are speaking, I can really hear their voices. You capture them so well. And a story where the ranch hands get to do something useful! I particularly liked getting into Hoss’ head in this story. he felt very convincing and I liked the way he was almost the kingpin in the telling of the story. Thanks. Enjoyed reading it.

Author’s Response: Yep, it’s about time to make all those hands “visible” and active in the story! 😉 I’m glad you enjoyed the story, thank you for letting me know!

The story is well written, and this crisis the Cartwrights endure and discuss together brings up interesting philosophical questions.

Author’s Response: Thank you! I have a tendency ti philosophize! Might as well do it through Cartwright eyes! 😉

You had me on the edge of my seat for this entire story. I love the characterization of the Cartwrights, so true in a really heartwrenching situation. Thank you so much for the excellent reading.

Author’s Response: Thank you so much for such an excellent review! The Cartwrights are wonderful characters to work with!

I think that you captured the essence of what makes the appeal of the Cartwrights so classic: they never give up on each other. It is also wonderful how you tied John Donne’s quote into the whole story. Joe and Adam were like a little island when they were stranded and stuck in the down pour at the start of the story, and the core of that weaved around to the end when Adam read the whole passage before falling asleep, and it even included Pa and Hoss in its path with their philosohical conversation.

Author’s Response: Thank you so much for such a wonderful story analysis! I’m happy you were able to both see and enjoy the ‘circle.’ we all feel like islands at some point or another, but in reality are all tied together as part of mankind. Some, like the Cartwrights, are tied even closer together than others. 😉

  1. Freyakendra,

Thank you for this beautiful story that explores deep universal questions, both philosophical and spiritual, about why terrible things happen to good people. It seems so incredibly sad that people often blame God for the bad when everything God does is from goodness, for “He is love.” Unfortunately, in life, “time and unforeseen occurrences befall us all.” I love how the roles of love and comfort were reversed with Joe and Adam and how Adam finally found acceptance of his own humanity and its limits. Thank you for this introspective story of the Cartwright Family, for they all would have been deeply affected by the events.

  2. Very profound and it certainly made me think. I do enjoy stories that not only deal with the accident, incident or whatever has happened, but also deals with the aftermath of it. The Cartwrights were not superhuman and they would have suffered, for some time, once they were home and out of the initial danger as it’s then that you start dealing with the what ifs.

  3. Just read this again. There don’t seem to be any of my comments here. I think I made them elsewhere. This is absolutely one of my favorite Bonanza fan fiction stories. Such amazing insight into the characters and so moving. Thanks!

  5. Ok PLEASE do not think I’m nuts and try hard not to laugh … But you actually have made me cry !
Yep ! I don’t know if its your descriptions of everything or the way you make me see it all actually playing out as if they are really there or if I’m the biggest woose out ! Lol
But there ya go , i cried

  6. Are you kidding me, Kendra? I love to read stories over!! This story was amazing as only a story of this magnitude could ever be! What poetry, what depth of feeling in the moment of pure hopelessness and stubborn strength. Adam always denies that he suffers but those who suffer in silence, at all times, suffer the most–and I’m glad that someone finally told him. Your talent is greatly applauded, Kendra! Thanks!!

    1. Thank you so much! I love hearing that someone enjoys a story enough to read it again!:) you’ve made my day!;)
