A Wreath of Blessings (by PuchiAnn)

Summary:  A poem originally inspired by a Christmas card showing a wreath made from pine branches and cones and sent out years ago to Bonanza friends.

Word count: 122

Rating: K

A wreath of Ponderosa pine

Tells me that it’s Christmas time.

Outside, a fleece of shim’ring snow,

Within, bathed by the firelight’s glow,

Sit Ben and Adam, Hoss and Joe,

Reflecting on the year that’s passed

And all the blessings they’ve amassed:

The lasting bond of four strong men,

The love of warm and faithful friends.

True wealth upon which life depends.

What happiness these walls have known,

As boys to manhood here have grown.

So many joys, but hardships, too,

Combine to create heroes true,

And fellowship ‘twixt me and you!

I discovered Bonanza as a young girl in its first run and have been a faithful fan ever since. Wondering if the Cartwright saga could fit into the real history of the area, I did some research and wrote a one-volume prequel, simply for my own enjoyment. That experience made me love writing, and I subsequently wrote and published in the religious genre. Years later, having run across some professional Bonanza fanfiction, I gobbled up all there was and, wanting more, decided I'd have to write it myself. I decided to rewrite that one-volume Cartwright history, expanding it to become the Heritage of Honor series and developing a near-mania for historical research. Then I discovered the Internet and found I wasn't alone, for there were many other stories by fine writers in libraries like this one. I hope that you'll enjoy mine when I post them here.

  1. It’s a beautiful poem, full of warmth and the meaning of true friendship and family.
To me, the Cartwrights comprise what a true family is and should be…one for all and all for one. They will put themselves out not just for their family, but for a friend or even a stranger in need. So many people in today’s world can learn so much from this family.

    1. It’s so true that the Cartwrights had many life lessons to teach today’s world. Did you know that a series of Bible lessons was developed using episodes of Bonanza (The Andy Griffith Show, too)? I thought that was a brilliant idea!

  2. Your poem creates a warm and inviting scene as the wreath upon the door draws us inside the loving home. It’s a home we all know so well, and look at the friendships that have formed thanks to these forun strong and loving men. Thank you for sharing this with us. Merry Christmas!

  3. Merry Christmas à vous Puchi Ann que j’aimerais rencontrer pour partager une conversation sur la saga Cartwright.
Belle poésie qui nous ouvre le cœur. 💖🎄🤠

  4. This is lovely, Puchi Ann, and happy holidays to you! It brought to my mind how these four strong men could also show emotion and love, to the point where some call the “gay,” and really, for these guys, that’s actually a compliment!
