This story hit the spot this evening. I was drawn in and completely immersed in the lives of the Cartwright brothers. Listening to what course of action they should take as they pondered choosing between vengeance and justice kept this reader in suspense. Your description of Ben showing his displeasure was right on in the final chapter.

I’m quite honored, Freya, to have such a fine story dedicated to me. Loved the surreal opening from Joe’s POV not realizing how he got home or put his gun up or anything. Adam’s plan was brilliant, of course. Also loved Pa’s yelling at the end without regard for Joe’s poor aching head. Great scenes!

I love Joe’s coming awake and hearing his Pa’s declaration, AND the ‘discussion’ with Joe trying to get through to Pa just how painful it was to listen.
The Gambler (final verse):
So when he’d finished speakin’, he turned back towards the window,
Crushed out his cigarette and faded off to sleep.
And somewhere in the darkness the gambler, he broke even.
But in his final words I found an ace that I could keep.
The ace this time was: Brothers – Adam and Hoss looking out for their own brother, Joe, as well as for every other brother who had been ‘touched’ by Clayton Scott.

There are two ways his statement, “I assure you that won’t happen” could be interpretted, 1) he won’t promise to go off half-cocked or 2) if he does go ‘off’ it won’t be half-cocked, he’ll be the 1860’s version of General Patton or General Schwarzkopf. I love the ending of this segment.

I read this quite a while ago and just stumbled on it again and enjoyed it as much as the first time. Very good story and well written. In general, I’m not all that fond of Adam but I really liked him in your story. Loved the scheming that he came up with and the bit of subterfuge he and Hoss set up in order to carry out justice!
This is one of my favorite Freya stories! I love the way you wrote Adam’s inner turmoil, but ultimate *typically-°Adam* calculated choice! Great story, with all the best elements of great fanfiction!
