In Loving Memory
Little Joe sighed. “There won’t be beignets this Christmas.” His mother had always made the French donuts for holiday and birthday breakfasts. “Mama ain’t here to make them.”
Hoss bit his lower lip. “Hop Sing might make some.”
“Hop Sing never made ‘em. Only Mama!”
“Hop Sing watched her. He probably could make them. He ordered lots of powdered sugar in the Christmas supplies. We could ask.”
“No, Mama always did them. She said Hop Sing had too much else to do.”
“Still…”
“No!”
Hoss sighed. “Okay.”
Still, on Christmas morning, platters of freshly fried beignets graced the Cartwright table.
