The Animals Talk at Midnight
“Adam, you gots to take me.”
“I’m busy.”
“Nots now. Tomorrow’s night.”
“Where is it I’m to take you?”
“The barn.”
Adam’s eyebrow cocked.
“Why ?”
“To hear the animals talk. Hank says they talk at midnight Christmas Eve.”
“Now…”
“Do they all talk or just the big ones? Do the birds and mice…”
“Just the big ones.”
“Not the bugs then?”
“Not the bugs.”
“The horses do though; they’s the ones I want to hear. Please, please, big brother.”
Adam sighed, considered, and agreed.
The next night the horses talked abet with voices awfully like Old Ned’s and Hank’s.
