Rating: K

Word Count: 192

I sure do miss you now

In the silence where your laughter once rang true,

And your smile once sparked joy in every heart.

I sure do miss you now

In the moments when your wisdom is needed,

And your warm presence once lent me support.

I sure do miss you now,

Oh brother mine,

When the darkness creeps all the closer,

And the light is so very far away.

I remember the days when we fought together,

Side by side.

I remember the days when we played together,

Oh those times.

I remember.

I remember.

I remember….

~*~

I sure do miss you now

When the leaves are changing

And the nights are running cold.

I sure do miss you now

As my hair is greying

And the lines on my face begin to show.

I sure do miss you now

Oh brother mine,

As I watch my children growing up

And wonder which one is more like you.

But I remember the days when we cried together,

You and I.

And I remember the days when we laughed together,

Oh those times.

I remember.

I remember.

Yes, I remember…you.

Always.

Author’s Note:

I just wrote this last month for a writing challenge on Bonanza Boomers. I was given the song title “I Sure Do Miss You Now” by Pure Prairie League and had to write a story or a poem based solely off of the title. This is what came to mind. I actually made myself cry a little while writing it, I’m a little embarrassed to say.

  1. This poem strikes so many wonderful chords. It made me miss Hoss just as much, and sent flashes of scene through my mind of Joe and Hoss together. And as JC said, if it moves you to tear while writing, it will move your readers too. Thanks for sharing this.

  2. Very beautiful poem, Annie. It was moving indeed. I can imagine the pain Joe felt when losing Hoss as well as Mike losing Dan. 🙁

  3. Annie, don’t be embarrassed about shedding a tear when you’re writing something that moves you deeply. If you don’t feel it, your readers won’t either. Thank you for sharing your lovely poem with us. 🙂
