Summary: This was a poem I wrote shortly after Pernell Roberts death, remembering his accomplishments and wonderful character. It’s not sad! Those who love Adam or Pernell or any of his other characters will understand exactly what I’m writing about. Sweet dreams!

We Dance
I knew a man of warm, strong voice
Who spoke for freedom, fought for choice
Walked placidly amid the noise
And deeply touched our hearts.
His visage still in pictures seen
Rakish, angry, sweet, serene
The smile, the brows, the strength, the lean
Charge us to remember.
His essence moves in shrouds of mist
As sun warmed earth meets evening’s kiss
And in our hearts his spirit drifts
He’s bound by earth no longer.
But sometimes in the moonlight’s gleam
I sleep, caressed by silver beams
And there, within my sweetest dream
He comes to me.
He speaks no words; he knows my mind
His hands still strong – his face still kind
Witness to the peace we find
In silence.
Too soon light creeps past the sill
He lingers on with me, but still
He must take leave, but says he will
Return to me.
He in those final moments, stands
He gently takes my waiting hand
And swaying to sweet memory’s band…
WE DANCE

This was on the list of random stories on the home page and I had no idea what it was, so I read it…and was surprised to see I had read it many years before, too. Wow, it’s just as gorgeous now as it was then–and how quickly I forgot a poem I should have memorized and recited every day!
Thank you, Sandspur
It came out of a poetry challenge waaaaaayyyyy back when that old BZ site was active. I think we were to write something to go with a picture. This remains one of my favorite writings.
This popped up in the random ficus this evening and I’m so glad… it’s beautiful! Thank you.
What a beautiful, loving way to share the essence of the man with those who loved him in his many rolls and as himself. I too believe he put much of himself into Adam. A memorable “Dance”.
Thank you AC1830. I think we’d all have liked to meet him just to hear him talk about life.
This is lovely, MissJudy. Not everyone has such an exquisite gift of expression through poetry. My you continue to nurture and share it.
Thank you JC2. You are very kind.
That is lovely, Miss Judy. A wonderful tribute to the man and all his many creations! Thank you for sharing it with us!
Thank you, SKlamb. I wrote that as a thread challenge back at another site, but always liked how it turned out.
Oh my word I loved that! Captures the essence of Adam in a single poem. Well done!
Thank you so much, Elizabeth. It was Pernell’s essence too. I think that’s why his representation of Adam always seemed so perfect.
MissJudy, it’s funny but I don’t think I ever read this before…and I should have. I should read it every day, in fact, to cut through my naturally cynical shell and warm the heart beneath. It is gorgeous, just like he was…and like you are.
Thanks sandspur. I wrote that in one of the old BW picture forums. Someone posted a pic and we wrote poetry to go with it. I wrote another for a pic with him holding a glass but can’t find it.
