The description of a ‘bumpy’ ride pales in comparison to the hills and valleys Joe went through to save a family. Thankfully, his family soon followed.

And yes, some people can be too compassionate; hopefully Pa, Adam, Hoss, and even Marie can temper Joe so that he doesn’t fall into the same depths of despair as the good doctor.

Author’s Response:

Thank you for reading so many of my stories, and leaving such thoughtful reviews! And yes, too much compassion can be heart breaking…but…worthwhile in the long run, I think. We just need the strength of our loved ones to keep us from falling to such depths. Fortunately, the Cartwrights are strong and compassionate…and they’ll surely help the doctor find his way back. In fact…”Hollow” shows us just that! 😉

Aw, poor Joe wishing his family was around to help him. I have a feeling he’s going to need them even more by the end of this story. And I enjoyed Adam and Roy’s tactful manipulating of Ben.

Aw, poor kid. At least he has Joe with him; very touching moment. Joe probably sees a lot of himself in the boy. And you have no idea how happy I was that the satchel burned; if the people who need it can’t have it then nobody can 🙂

Loved the part about Joe making faces in the stage, so Little Joe. And I laughed when you included him in with the children. But what do you know, a plot twist. Had to know something was going to happen.

Author’s Response: Thanks! I’m so glad you liked that part! I could see Joe playing with the kids like that. It was crystal clear in my head; I hoped to capture enough of what I saw in words to help readers see it too. And yep. A plot twist! 😉

Uh oh, Joe’s in trouble now 🙂 But it’s definitely something I can see him doing – running off to San Francisco without telling anyone. And why do I get the feeling that this isn’t going to be a simple trip?

Author’s Response: A simple trip would make for a boring story!lol!;-) Yep. Joe’s in deep now!

Great start, I’m interested to see how the plot develops with this heartless SOB that you’ve created. I like the way you portray Joe’s thought process as he ponders the situation.

Author’s Response: Thank you! Gainsby is an SOB, isn’t he? I can’t help but wonder if Joe would have figured him for bad news even if he hadn’t overheard the conversation–just by looks alone, or ‘bad vibes.’ I see Gainsby as the type of person dogs and children hate on instinct!;-)

I love to read that history!

We can feel throughout the course of events that our dear family is united as we know and love so much!

Even though Joe more mature, we still see in him the innocence and impetuosity we admire so much.

Author’s Response: Thank you so much! I do love a mature Joe who still relates well with children!:-) I’m very glad you enjoyed the story!

Fantastic story. Kept me on the edge of the seat throughout the entire story.

Wonderfully written and all Joe. Thanks.

Author’s Response: Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed it so much!:-)

  1. Wow! Just wow! That was quite a tale with some hefty nuggets of wisdom sewn into the story. Just one little complaint – I think Adam shot the wrong snake.

    1. Thank you so much! I remember this story being a struggle for me to write, but I have to admit I’m somewhat proud of the result. I’m humbled by the wisdom I find the characters saying, almost as though they chose the words, not me. ?
