Playing With Fire (by Donna)

Chapter 2

As Joe looked up at Margarita, he saw that the fire that inhabited her eyes had been replaced with sadness. He walked over to her and took her small delicate hands into his. “Listen Miss Margarita, I’m sorry if I’ve upset you….” he began, but was suddenly cut off by Margarita. “You have not upset me Joseph! No one upsets me!” she shouted. Joe looked at her incredulously. “With all due respect Margarita…..you’re right….I think you upset yourself!”

Margarita pulled one of her hands away and proceeded to slap Joe across his face. “How dare you!” she screamed. “Who do you think you are?”

Joe touched the side of his face gingerly. “I think,” he said, “a man who has come too close to the truth.”

As Margarita stood to leave the barn, but Joe pushed her back down. “Now you’re going to listen to me and listen to me good, Margarita,” Joe began. “No one has had the guts to tell you the truth – well, let me be the first. Want to know what your problem is? You always want to be in control. Control of every facet of your life. Well, life doesn’t work that way. Sometimes you have to give way to other people, other things.”

Margarita’s eyes filled with tears. She heard the truth in Joe’s words. “I don’t know how to do that Joseph,” she said quietly. “I have always had to take control – for my family, for me! I don’t know any other way. And I’m too old to learn.” Margarita found herself looking at Joe differently….how could this young man understand her, better than any other person before?

“You’re not too old to try.” Joe replied, his hazel eyes looking at Margarita intently. “Let go Margarita, and see what can happen.”

Seeing the sincerity in Joe’s eyes, Margarita decided to take a leap into unchartered waters. She took Joe’s face in her hands, her own brown eyes filled with emotion. “Joseph,” she whispered. “I’m ready to try…..show me how.”

At that moment, Joe found himself drawn to the vunerablity of Margarita, and leaned in with a kiss. He was surprised when she kissed him back with just as much, if not more passion. Taking her hand, Joe led Margarita to the barn’s loft, placing her on the abundant pile of hay. “Are you sure about this?” Joe asked, his eyes and pants giving away his desires. Margarita looked up at him longingly and replied, “Yes Joseph, I am. Take control……make love to me, right here, right now.”
