Such a wonderful story Freya! I started it as a WIP, but missed the final post and thought I would read the whole thing here.
This story is so beautifully magical, yet grounded and realistic. You took Joe to a place that we have never seen him go and made it all make sense. You also handled the tragedy suffered by the people in the village with such warmth and respect. You have such an amazing ability to take your readers along as the Cartwrights have their adventures.

All of this story is very good, but this chapter in particular really spoke to me. It’s so like Hoss to be able to step beyond his personal situation to offer the best comfort he can to anyone who needs it. Beautifully done–thank you!

I think what I liked most was your toying with the animal spirits. I’ve done some research on that myself, and I find it highly interesting.
Even though I’d love to see Adam playing a bigger part in everything 😉 …. No, it’s a wonderful story, with beautifully painted characters (Doc Martin!) and a touching plot. Very well done, and beautifully worded. Thanks a lot for that!

I love stories with historical references, humor, tension, interesting and believable characters, and a sense of mystery or wonder at the end. This story has all of that and more. Well done, Freya.

Thank you, Cheaux! When writing for a historical era, I try to add bits of authenticity with real references. I think Bonanza tried to depict Native Americans with more authenticity than many productions of the 50s and 60s, and I certainly want to do the same, or better. I have a lot of respect for indigenous cultures. I also enjoy a sense of mystery, and recognizing there are “greater things on heaven and earth” than we will ever know. I’m glad you enjoyed this. Yay, it’s here! I loved reading it just as much the second time around. Great plot movement, not too rushed and not too slow, and once again I’ll just say that I love the extra cultural bits. They add a lot to the authenticity of the story.
